In episode 5 of the PhotoWILD Podcast, Jared Lloyd and Annalise Kaylor discuss what it takes to plan a trip to Yellowstone National Park in the winter. This year, they spent a month photographing wildlife in this winter wonderland and discuss the many different considerations they make for preparing for their time there. From equipment choices to timing based on statistical averages for weather, if you have ever wanted to photograph in Yellowstone in the winter, you won't want to miss this episode. Key Takeaways While the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem has the greatest species diversity of mammals in North America, there is an incredible array of avian species to photograph this time of year such as bald eagles, golden eagles, black-billed magpies, snow buntings, and the endangered Rocky Mountain trumpeter swan - to name just a few. Lens choices are made for very personal reasons based on the exact type of photographs someone wants to create - close up portraits, environment photographs, images of wolves, images of bison, etc. Identifying what the opportunities will be and specifically what type of photographs you want to create of those species should dictate what equipment you bring on a trip like this. Historically, the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem experiences very deep cold in January and very snowy conditions in February. If you want frosty bison, you should travel to the region in January. If you want photographs of animals in heavy falling snow, statistically speaking, you should travel to Yellowstone in February. Low pressure systems impact wildlife behavior. The day before a big storm hits an area, wildlife activity increases exponentially. Successful wildlife photography often comes down to understanding the very unique windows of time that certain opportunities can be found. For instance, if you want moose in the snow, you should come to Yellowstone as early as possible - December to January 15th. Moose are the first species to loose their antlers in the ecosystem. By the end of January, you will be hard pressed to find a single moose that still holds antlers. Jared's Yellowstone kit includes the Nikon 400mm f/2.8 with built in 1.4 TC, the Nikon 800mm PF f/6.3 lens, 2 Nikon Z9 camera bodies, the Sony FX6 cinema camera, and Sony 200-600 f/5.6-6.3 lens. Annalise's Yellowstone kit includes the Sony 400mm f/2.8, the Sony 200-600, Sony A1 camera bodies. Want to join us in Yellowstone next year? Each year, Jared and Annalise lead workshops to Yellowstone National Park in the winter. If you would like to join us in 2024, which will be Jared's 31st trip he has led there, then check out https://www.jaredlloyd.com/winter-wildlife-yellowstone
In this episode, Jared and Annalise discuss photographing pelagic seabirds at a nesting colony along the Caribbean Coast of Panama. While many different species utilize the island, the red-billed tropicbirds and brown boobies stole the show. The word “pelagic,” means open ocean. These are species of birds that spend their entire lives on the wing out over the ocean, returning to land only once a year to breed. Of all the many species of birds around the world, pelagic seabirds are both the least understood and also the most threatened group of birds on the planet. Key Takeaways in this Episode When it comes to photographing birds in flight, backgrounds are everything Contrasting colors are one of the most important considerations when it comes to choosing how and where to photograph a species. Experiments are beginning to suggest that turning off eye detect autofocus increases success rates with birds in flight Understanding how to use close-focus priority autofocus area modes will dramatically improve your bird in flight photography. Equipment Considerations Bird in flight photography is always easiest when hand holding a lens. But when it comes to photographing from a boat, this is a must. Finding a balance between weight and focal length is important. On this particular trip, Jared used a Nikon 500mm PF f/5.6 lens with the FTZ adaptor on a Nikon Z9. While this is a fantastic little lens, Jared said he will never do it again. The weather sealing of this lens was just not up to par with what was demanded of the equipment this year in Panama. And by the time they were in boats photographing pelagic seabirds, the 500mm PF lens had condensation INSIDE of the lens itself. This dramatically impacted the lenses ability to find and accurately lock focus. Instead, Jared had to switch to his Nikon 120-300mm f/2.8 lens instead. This lens, while perfect for photographing monkeys and sloths and various mammals in Panama, was not brought with the intention to be used to photograph birds on the open ocean. Next time, Jared will bring the Nikon 400mm f/2.8 w/ built in 1.4 teleconverter instead for this situation. Annalise used the Sony A1 with the Sony 400mm f/2.8 and had no trouble with weather proofing. While a heavier lens then most would opt for using to photograph birds in flight, the superior glass, weather sealing, and autofocusing capabilities of this lens proved to make the additional weight well worth the effort.

Sapna Reddy and Matt Kloskowski have more in common than just colorful photos of birds in nature and soothing landscapes. In this week's episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we investigate how their respective work lives have fueled the technical mastery that allows their creative vision to flourish. We spoke with them both as part of our continuing coverage of B&H's 2022 OPTIC Conference. We begin the show with Dr. Sapna Reddy, who balances a rigorous medical career in radiology with the creative freedom of time spent outdoors, capturing scenic landscapes. Reddy's medical work is limited to a strict analysis of grayscale image data, yet her colorful landscapes provide a healing influence from the world of hospitals. Listen in to learn how she follows the light based on what nature delivers—choosing extreme wide-angle lenses for scenes with powerful foregrounds that draw the viewer's eye and using longer focal length lenses for compositions that isolate elements. Reddy also tells of mastering the technical to allow the aesthetic step in, a process she freely shares with students during awe-inspiring photography workshops in destinations both near and far. After a break, we shift the conversation to Sony Artisan Matt Kloskowski, whose passion for bird photography is central to his motto of “Embrace the Chaos.” During our chat, Kloskowski emphasizes how technical knowledge of one's gear can minimize barriers between the eye and the subject. Along with an honest assessment about absorbing failure and challenging success rates, Kloskowski describes how the blazing frame rate of his Sony A1 and its bird eye autofocus help him achieve razor sharp bird pictures. Widely known as an Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, onOne type guy, Kloskowski also fills us in about the massive collection of online courses, YouTube tutorials, and Lightroom presets that fuels his career as a photo educator, and takes up 99 percent of his time and effort. Please join us for these insightful conversations about photographing birds, wildlife, and scenic landscapes, and balancing the creative with the technical until your process becomes innate. Photographers now can take their pick of cameras that can shoot stills fast enough to actually be movies. But Canon's approach to a speedy flagship is arguably the most different from Sony's and Nikon's. Instead of creating a camera that can shoot both fast and high resolution, the Canon EOS R3 uses a less-headline-worthy 24.1-megapixel sensor. Canon is taking a gamble that the photographers who want 30 fps are also the photographers who prioritize exceptional low light performance over high resolution. And, they're trying to sweeten the deal with an autofocus system that will just focus on wherever you're looking. You can view this article and much more with minimal ads in our brand new app for iOS, iPadOS, and Android. Will Canon's gamble pay off, or is the R3 going to lose out to a higher resolution foe? Does the AF in this headline mean autofocus or the Urban Dictionary definition of AF? I spent a few weeks with the Canon R3, shooting everything from wildlife to equestrian to low light portraits. I was blown away by both the autofocus and the noise reduction in the dark. And limited rolling shutter distortion may actually make the R3's top speeds useful. Table of Contents Too Long, Didn't Read Canon EOS R3 Pros and Cons Pros Cons Gear Used Innovations Canon EOS R3 Tech Specs Ergonomics Build Quality Autofocus Eye Control AF Ease of Use Metering Image Quality High ISO Images RAW File Versatility Extra Image Samples Edited Unedited Conclusion Likes Dislikes Too Long, Didn't Read The Canon R3 has a top burst speed that's actually useful because of a great autofocus system and a faster processor to limit rolling shutter. This camera can not only shoot in the dark but print ISO 128,000 and still look good. While the R5 may make more sense for detail work, the R3 is an exceptional low-light and fast-action camera. Canon EOS R3 Pros and Cons Pros Impressive autofocus performance with both action and low light Face recognition works phenomenally, even on birds and in dark scenes Reduced rolling shutter distortion and 1/180 flash sync with electronic shutter Excellent noise reduction at high ISOs Eye Control AF Built-in vertical grip Lots of great controls Weather-sealed Cons Resolution is lower than competitors (but this is partially why low light quality is so great) Higher learning curve Hot shoe adapter recommended for weather-sealing with older flashes Heavier and larger than the R5 and R6 Pricey Gear Used I used the Canon EOS R3 with the 70-200 f4, 85mm f2 Macro, and 16mm f2.8 RF mount lenses. I also paired the camera with both the EL-1 flash and the Flashpoint R2 Zoom Li-Ion III and a wireless trigger. I stashed the gear in the F-Stop Ajna backpack. The reflections you see in some of the night portraits were created with Lensbaby Omni wands. Innovations Canon wasn't the first to announce a sports-focused mirrorless flagship; it competes with the speed of the Sony A1 and the Nikon Z9. But, there's still a lot of innovation here. Canon has included Eye Control AF, which was previously on some of their film cameras. This moves the autofocus point to whatever part of the frame your eye is looking at. The processor that's behind the 30 fps top burst speed also reduces rolling shutter distortion with faster image processing. Canon EOS R3 Tech Specs Adorama lists the following specifications for the Canon EOS R3, shortened for clarity: Lens Mount: Canon RF Sensor Type: 36 x 24mm (Full-Frame) CMOS Sensor Resolution: Actual: 26.7 Megapixel; Effective: 24.1 Megapixels Crop Factor: None Aspect Ratio: 1:1, 3:2, 4:3, 16:9 Image File Format: JPEG, Raw, HEIF Bit Depth: 14-Bit Image Stabilization: Sensor-Shift, 5-Axis ISO Sensitivity: Auto, 100 to 102400 (Extended: 50 to 204800) Shutter Speed: Mechanical Shutter: 1/8000 to 30 Second, Bulb Mode Electronic Shutter: 1/64000 to 30 Second in Manual Mode; 1/64000 to 30 Second in Shutter Priority Mode; 1/8000 to 30 Second in Aperture Priority Mode; 1/8000 to 30 Second; in Program Mode; Bulb Mod...

A quick take on the new Sony flagship mirrorless camera - the A1. A 50 megapixel, 8k video monster of a camera. But is the hype worth the price tag? Photographers love their gear, especially Sony photographers, but are the advances made with the Sony A1 going to be something that gets photographers to pony up all that cash, or will they wait for a price drop? We've had not one, but two major camera launches in the last couple of weeks, so the PN team sit down to discuss the Fujifilm GFX100S and Sony A1 in detail. What are the standout features? What does some of the technology mean? Do you actually need all that they have on offer? Will, Roger and Kingsley are on hand to answer all of these questions and more, plus they reveal which of the two cameras they would buy (assuming they had the money, of course!) Elsewhere on episode 19 of The Photography News Podcast, the team reveal their latest photo exploits, which include buying an alarming amount of glycerin, getting to grips with a new camera and narrowly avoiding a trip to A&E while out ‘enjoying' the snowy conditions. Our experts also tackle the thorny subjects of whether you should calibrate your computer monitor and which filters you should buy first. Got a pressing photography question? DIRECTO A LAS 14 horas.
