Don't Call it a ComebackIn 2015 we'd been touring again, promoting the vinyl re-issues of our earlier albums, and our manager encouraged us to start writing songs again. We released the first single, Alone In A Crowd, and ended up recording a dozen more, which ended up coming out as our 7th album Pop Guilt. In retrospect the album was a weird one to return with after a 12 year absence. Tim and Kellie explain their mixed feeling around the songs, their recording and production. They discuss how being involved with other bands during the Screamfeeder recording hiatus meant that they came back to the table as different people and different songwriters, as well as how bizarre, challenging - and fun - they found being in bands with other people.A lot of Tim's songs were written in England in 2016 after he won the Grant McLennan Fellowship in 2015, and he explains how this played out and the immense challenges he was faced with, more or less from day one.Kellie dives down a rabbit hole trying to work out why so many of Tim's songs feature the phone, and we come to the realisation - late - that almost every song on the album is hugely influenced by Dinosaur Jr (and/or Sebadoh). Some things never change!Pop Guilt was a first for us in that we got to pick from our "dream list of hero producers" to mix the songs. It was also a first in that we used crowd-funding, asking for assistance from our fans to fund the recording. Both these experiments paid off hugely in ways we could never have expected. We chat about the culture of the late nineties and early noughties which was still such a huge influence, namely The Rat by The Walkmen, The Sopranos, and Seinfeld. We also have a laugh about I Might Have Some Regrets: how Tim pulled his classic move of pushing it through super late in the game, and how Kellie "Chucked a 'nana like a little baby" in the studio.Read more / buy on our websiteOn BandcampPop Guilt on SpotifyOn YouTubeThe Walkmen: The RatThe Valery TrailsCheck out our album All The Other Times: A Pop Guilt Companion and download it for free! I put so much effort into burning up my youth. After a failed attempt to tour America in 1993, we released an EP at home in Australia which was to be the bridge between Burn Out Your Name and Fill Yourself with Music. Felicitator was a random collection, with acoustic tracks and demo versions as well as fully formed new songs, which would never appear anywhere else.Years later in 2005 we released Delusions of Grandchildren (thanks Dean), another kooky collection of studio recordings and home demos we had lying around. Both these releases are close to our hearts, offering more of an insight into our weird songwriting and diverse influences than a regular album might. They are also resoundingly different sounding releases, being 22 years apart they almost feel like different bands.Tim and Kel fired up both EPs and chatted about the songs, the recordings and the circumstances around them. We delve into the freer approach we took to these records, and talk about our singing and its many imperfections (which we like) as well as the broader approach of dazzling with bullshit (thanks Blackie) which has served us well over the years. We also chat about teeth and dentistry, and at length about our current projects and plans. This is the last episode of series one of the podcast. We're excited abut series two, it's going to much more diverse! Thanks as always to everyone who's been along for the ride, thanks for enjoying and commenting on the podcasts, we appreciate it.If you've gotten something out of being a patron of Screamfeeder, tell your friends - they can sign up for a 7 day free trial and hear a bunch of stuff for free before committing, of course.Felicitator on our website Felicitator on Bandcamp Felicitator on Spotify Delusions on our websiteDelusions on BandcampDelusions on SpotifyKellie's radio show, Heyday Shoeb Ahmad - Spotify Deafcult - Spotify Hosted on Acast. Metal On Metal. At the end of 1991 into the early summer of 1992 we recorded our first album, Flour. Tim and Kellie chat how it came about and how we made it happen. There's lots we don't remember, or we half remember, or we think we remember, it was a long time ago! We marvel at the album's "unusual" sound, and wonder how it ended up sounding like that. We also chat about how every song sounds like we're wanting to emulate one of our guitar-hero bands at the time (which we were). This episode includes the story of the band's name change, after Kellie joined, from The Madmen to Screamfeeder. It also tells the story of how Tim and Kellie met, and how Kellie joined the band, and explains how and why there are two versions of this album.Tim blabs on about alternative guitar tunings a bit too much (you better get used to that, sorry).Kel tells us about how she wanted to be "the best bass player in the world" and how that's panned out for her. And somehow the quote "The opposite of your balls dropping" gets a look-in. Desk Wars. In 1993 we drove to Sydney in Tim's van, to record our second album Burn Out Your Name. We remember all the strange and funny details around the recording, and the songs themselves, and Kellie dives into her diaries for some "on the ground" insights into what we got up to.We chat about fighting over the mixing desk when the producer's back was turned, the origin on the Fingers & Toes song title, and Wrote You Off being "too poppy and catchy" for the grunge era.We also mention our brief path-crossing with Steve Albini, and our band ethos of the time; "indie indie indie all the way", with Tim and Tony actively rejecting anything NOT indie. As a flip side, Kellie divulges her most rock'n'roll moment of decadence, "Don't let my mum listen to this". We also go off on a tangent and introduce bit players Bunty Pring and Tricia Candy, and explore Tim being "cock-blocked by Mrs Candy", at the age of 15. It's crazy stuff. Also The Darkness gets mentioned; Tim's love of the actual band, and Kellie's love of - and side hobby of - embracing the actual darkness.Enjoy this episode! For the 2014 re-release, Jamie Hutchings from Bluebottle Kiss wrote:Ah.. the lottery that is life. I used to see Screamfeeder at every opportunity around this time. They were going head to head with You Am I on a lot of bills, and I honestly had no idea who would win out in the rock'n'roll path of fame stakes. They were that good! Good enough that I'd usually pay to see them open up for bands I had no intention of sticking around the rest of the night for.Chunky, tinnitus-inducing riffs, bittersweet melodies and throat-implosion vocals; and on this album a dreamy molasses-like glaze over everything. Burn Out Your Name has everything that was special about the band during this era. Interview by Kris PetersBrisbane indie guitar pop outfit Screamfeeder are another band from the 1990s that is still commanding attention on the national touring circuit. The band has released a total of seven albums - the most recent of which was Five Rooms last May - and are one of the few remaining bands from that era that are still producing regular content as well as playing live. They will form but one cog in next weekends Spring Loaded 2023 Festival at Brisbane's Sandstone Point Hotel, reuniting with fellow 90s classmates Spiderbait, Frenzal Rhomb, Magic Dirt, Ratcat, Bodyjar, Shihad and Eskimo Joe for a trip down memory lane and also one which proves the timeless nature of good Australian music.Bassist Kellie Lloyd joined HEAVY to discuss the show and revisit old memories."We've actually tried to broaden our set list a little bit for this show," she offered, "because Spring Loaded in particular is all about the 90s, so we tend to play songs that the audience will know. Not like stuff from our newer albums - because we've been continuing to put out albums - we brought out one last year, so we're not playing new stuff. We're playing all older stuff. We wanna make sure that we're appealing to the audience and what they are after."We mention the line-up and the old school nature of the bands, pointing out it's almost like a family reunion of sorts."We've played gigs with all of those bands," she nodded. "In the 90s we toured with Spiderbait and Magic Dirt and we've played with Shihad and Bodyjar and Ratcat. All of those bands we're all friends, so yeah, it is like a... it's not like a family reunion, it's more like a reconnection of people who are doing what they love. The audience is there to relive that part of their lives, and a lot of people might bring their kids along who are now teenagers or twenty - something's who grew up listening to this music. I call it a Nostalgia Fest because that's exactly what it is. It's really nostalgic, but it's also completely relevant. It's not like harking back to the past. All this music stands today and is still as vital as it was."In the full interview, Kellie discusses the importance of all Aussie festivals, runs through her best memories of each band on the bill, tells us what we can expect from their set, the early days of Screamfeeder and where they fit in, maintaining a musical presence and more.

Interview by Kris PetersThere's something to be said when it comes to nostalgia and Aussie music.Perhaps more so than any other music listening country in the world, Australia genuinely loves and respects music from eras gone by, recognising not only the current state and crop of Australian artists, but also paying homage to the bands who paved the way for a prolonged period of success. It doesn't hurt when these bands continue to not only tour - but do so with the same youthful zest and energy they delivered in their heyday. And when a festival like Spring Loaded comes along on a now yearly basis further proof of the credentials and staying power of Aussie talent is laid bare on one stage over one day for all to see. This years first Spring Loaded, to be held at Bribie Island's Sandstone Point Hotel on June 3, showcases the best of the best of yesteryear, with Spiderbait headlining and being joined by Frenzal Rhomb, Shihad, Magic Dirt, Bodyjar, Eskimo Joe, Ratcat and Screamfeeder. The festival is living testament to the longevity of Australian bands and music and is all the more special for the fact it is made up only of bands from this part of the world.Shihad are the only New Zealand band on the line-up and are eager to get out there and play songs from their most recent album Old Gods, which hasn't yet received the attention it deserves due to recent world events.Frontman Jon Toogood joined HEAVY to chat about Spring Loaded and Shihad's place in the line-up."Any opportunity to get me in front of a crowd with that band I'm real happy about," he smiled. "I'm pretty excited."We bring up the quality of bands on the bill and the fact they are still drawing crowds decades after they first came out."It's almost like the nineties all over again," he laughed. "I like these festivals because it's not too uncomfortable backstage because I know everybody (laughs). It's a nice vibe backstage. Everyone is past that really hyper-competitive bollocks that we used to do when we were young, so everyone gets along a lot better. We're there to absolutely slay, but back in the day at the Big Day Out and stuff it was cut-throat."In the full interview Jon talks about the drawing power of older bands like these, why they still succeed, some of the bands on the line-up and his best touring memory of them, what we can expect from Shihad's set, learning to manage yourself and your body as your career progresses, new material and more.

Interview by Kris PetersOften with music festivals containing some form of nostalgia things can become unnecessarily cluttered and almost sentimental, in effect negating the very concept of a musical celebration featuring an assortment of bands who have all played significant roles in the success that is Australian music. But, when a festival gels as it should then the result is nothing short of triumphant.Think festivals like Homebake and Livid that are to this day spoken about with awe and wonderment and the sheer magic of music is instantly compounded. And it now appears there's one more name to add to the list.Spring Loaded. After the universal acclaim from punters and performers alike following last years travelling spectacle, organisers have this year stuck to the same winning formula of signing up some of the best Australian music talent from the past couple of decades and throwing them together on one stage to unleash the inherent beauty of music in its purest and simplest form. This year headlined by Spiderbait, Spring Loaded kicks off on June 3 at the Sandstone Point Hotel with a stacked line-up that also includes Frenzal Rhomb, Shihad, Eskimo Joe, Screamfeeder, Magic Dirt, Ratcat and Bodyjar. With the countdown on for what is already shaping to be another monster day of entertainment, HEAVY sat down with Spiderbait's Kram to talk about the strength of Spring Loaded and Spiderbait's honour of having been named headliner."I think it will be fantastic," he enthused. "We did do this show a few years ago and I didn't really know what to expect and it was such a fantastic gig and fantastic festival. We can't wait to do it again and we're really pumped.""It's such a beautiful ampitheatre," he continued. "Amazing vibe and it reminds me of some of the old festivals that we used to play years ago in Queensland."In the full interview, Kram talks about being asked to headline, the importance of having festivals made up of only Australian bands, some memories of playing with other bands on the bill, their live show and what to expect, perfecting your craft and more.

In the mid 90's there was an explosion of bands coming out of Brisbane and gaining attention both nationally and internationally. There were four big bands leading the way - of course you know Dave McCormack aka Bandit's band Custard, along with Powderfinger, Regurgitator and Screamfeeder. When Screamfeeder found themselves on high rotation on Triple J (the national youth radio station) in 1996, the band were based in the inner north-west of Brisbane - Paddington, Bardon, Milton and Red Hill - the suburbs that Bluey is now showing off to the world. Justin sat down with frontman Tim Steward on the deck at Ashgrove Library to chat about their 30 year history, the Brisbane music scene and their new album 'Five Rooms'. Screamfeeder: Live at The Zoo, Fortitude Valley, 23 July 2020 In August 1991, singer/guitarist Tim Steward, bassist Kellie Lloyd and drummer Tony Blades formed Screamfeeder in Brisbane, evolving out of a previous band formed in Townsville called The Madmen. Screamfeeder quickly became a fixture on the local circuit and their debut album "Flour" was released in 1992. Follow-up album "Burn Out Your Name" brought them to national attention in 1993, with national and European tours following. In 1995 Tony Blades left the band and Dean Shwereb became the new drummer. Third album "Fill Yourself With Music" garnered further airplay and in 1996 fourth album "Kitten Licks" took the band to new creative heights. Largely written collaboratively in the rehearsal room, the material on "Kitten Licks" had an undeniable new sense of cohesion and energy, and boosted their profile to new heights. Poised on the edge of breakthrough success, in the late '90s Screamfeeder were stymied by a record deal with an American label who insisted on a delayed American release of "Kitten Licks" before they could record new music. While the band released the covers record "Home Age" during this time, it would be four years before they could extricate themselves from the American deal and release their next album of original material. "Rocks On The Soul", released in 2000, marked a stylistic departure from the band's indie rock sound, bringing in more electronic textures. Second guitarist Darek Mudge was brought onboard and Screamfeeder's sixth album, "Take You Apart" was released in 2003. The band played and recorded occasionally from then on, but in 2011 they played a "farewell gig" at Woodland when Dean Shwereb made plans to move overseas. Both Tim Steward and Kellie Lloyd made solo records and had other projects, including Steward's We All Want To and Lloyd's Majestic Horses and Warm Guns. But it wasn't long before Shwereb returned home and since then Screamfeeder have again held their place as a mainstay in the Brisbane music community, releasing their seventh album "Pop Guilt" in 2017. Their eighth, "Five Rooms", is due out in 2022. Screamfeeder were previously featured on Live Delay in episode 139 back in 2015. This set you're about to hear was recorded at one of the very first gigs back after Brisbane's initial COVID-19 lockdown was lifted. So far they have released three singles, two eps, toured the east coast, and supported some of Australia’s biggest names such as The Bennies, Tired Lion, and Brisbane’s own Screamfeeder. Sounding somewhere between 90’s Blink 182, and the heaviness of early Offspring albums, Walken produce hard hitting alternative rock with textures of the sunshine they were written in. Recorded live at the Greenslopes Bowls Club as part of Sonic Masala Fest on the 13th of August 2016. Recorded by Reuben Aptroot & mixed by Branko Cosic. SEIMS: Created by Sydney based multi-instrumentalist Simeon Bartholomew, SEIMS was originally a one-man studio project when he released the debut self titled album in 2012. The album was written, performed, recorded, and produced by himself, and after its release he received multiple requests for live performances of his bedroom symphonies. After recruiting members to fill the spots of trumpet/synth, guitar, and drums, while Simeon himself welded the bass and additional synths, SEIMS has been mesmerising audiences up and down the east coast. Their latest album II was released on the 7th of August 2015 and was created with the live experience in mind and delivers wall to wall noise, constant time signature changes, and a listening experience you don’t want to stop listening to. We All Want To: Formed back in 2009, We All Want To is the brain child of Tim Steward, namely the front man of Brisbane institution ‘Screamfeeder’ to discover some melodies and hooks in slower tempo’s. A bulk of the material that you’ll be hearing in this set comes from the self-titled debut album that was released in 2010, and 2013’s “Come Up Invisible”. The show we’re about to delve into was recorded last year at The Underdog, and was the book-end to what had been a successful Brisbane Live Music Week that was celebrated by 4ZZZ and all of its listeners. Recorded by Matthew Hall. Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at The Underdog, Brisbane on 29th of March, 2014. Dreamtime: Dreamtime are a psychedelic rock quartet that started life as a trio, with Zac Anderson on Guitar, Cat Maddin on Bass and Tara Wardrop on Drums, and saw their ideas outgrowing them, so they added Fergus Smith on Sitar and various other instruments. Their first self-titled album was released in 2011 and quickly followed it up with their sophomore release ‘Sun’ in 2012. Since then they’ve conquered venues across the pond in the United States and Japan, and have shared stages with the likes of Earthless, Deap Vally & Bardo Pond. Recorded by Josh Watson. Mixed by Donovan Miller at Nowhere Audio. Recorded at Shedstock, Lismore on the 8th of June, 2014. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 27 February 2015. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
