Alastair Emblem lives in St Joan of Arc parish, Farnham, Surrey. Since early 2018, Alastair has been the Core Group Leader of the Alton day of renewal which is a monthly meeting of the Catholic charismatic renewal formed 50 years ago this year (2025), and known affectionately as ADoRE. It's one of the longest continually-running Charismatic Days of Renewal in Britain. Alastair has been Worship Leader at ADoRE meetings since 2014, and we have recordings of him singing songs during each programme. He's actually been involved with the renewal since 1983 and with ADoRE since 2007. Alastair is author of Pray as you can't - step by step into a more fruitful prayer life. In the first programme, Alastair describes how, in response to a papal request no less, the Holy Spirit was poured out on Christians at the start of the last century. He charts the progress of the Catholic charismatic renewal, including its coming to Britain. Alastair also talks about Alton Day of Renewal, which celebrates 50 years in 2025. In the second programme, Alastair tells listeners how to respond to the Holy Spirit's call, he brings us up to date on what the Holy Spirit is doing in the modern church, and describes the new challenges of an era in great need of evangelisation. Key websites for both programmes are Charis UK and Alton Day of Renewal. Through the latter site, you can find out about the group's online and in-person meetings and access the YouTube channel which contains teachings and worship-resources.

Fr. Chris explains the truth and legend associated with St. Joan of Arc and how, upon receiving a vision from the Lord, she fought to help reclaim Catholic France from the English.
Im Mittelpunkt aber steht nach wie vor St Joans "wahnsinnig schöne Stimme" (Oliver Schwesig, DLF Kultur), die mit der oben genannten einnehmenden Mischung aus Gelassenheit und Intensität Zeilen singt, wie: "Your silence is all I hear / A sound I have learned to fear" oder "How violent, still forcing it / How pretentious, blaming you for my shit" – ganz eindeutig keine textliche Stangenware oder gar in Gefahr, als Klischee zu gelten.

On Episode 5 of The Hash Wednesday Podcast...Comedian Catherine Maloney & Minister Mary Magee chat about St. Joan of Arc. Badass Joan of Arc was a young peasant girl who rode into battle to fight for France...just like the voices told her to. She was convicted of Witchcraft & Cross Dressing (we love that shit but they did not so they burned her at the stake). That was a big whoopsie because she was later canonized a Roman Catholic Saint. St. Joan of Arc was persecuted because she saw gender, God, magic and spirituality in a different way. Her rebellion, mixed with her supernatural court of angels and saints, alongside her skills on the battlefield made Joan a threat to monarchy of England and of the Catholic Church. Her magical abilities for prophecy, healing and miracle working makes Joan a beloved Saint by the magic community, as well as spiritual community who also see their spiritual lives was a bit rebellious and different. In this episode we cover Joan of Arc's story, her connection with the supernatural as well as how she is worked with in folk magic and catholicism. ST. JOAN OF ARC | PATRON FOR SOLDIERS AND ONE OF THE PATRONS OF FRANCE FEAST DAY: MAY 30 Our saint today is a popular figure in literature, painting, sculpture, drama, movie and other cultural arts. It was during the “One Hundred Years' War” (1347-1453) between France and England that she appeared in history. The issue of the war was the right succession to the throne of France, which an English relative of the king was also claiming. Our saint became a soldier through divine intervention and fought for the honor of her country. She is none other than the teenager and mystic St. Joan of Arc, also called “The Maid of Orleans.” Joan of Arc was born in Domremy, France on February 6, 1412. Her parents were good Christians so she grew up to be devout, humble, honest, friendly and simple. She performed the ordinary work of a peasant girl and helped her mother in weaving. Several times, the family was disturbed by the fighting but they tried to accept it as part of their lives. When she was 13, she began to hear voices and see visions. St. Michael, St. Margaret and St. Catherine of Alexandria appeared urging her to join the fight. These continued till she was 16, so she decided to follow their recommendation. Joan asked to see the king and told him about the voices and visions. The king, who was in a state of despair, as the English were winning the battle, believed Joan of Arc. She was enlisted in the army, dressed as a soldier and was placed at the head of the troops, riding a horse but carrying only a banner. The soldiers attested that she never killed anyone. During the battle, the soldiers followed her advice and this resulted in the defeat of the English army. The outcome of this defeat was a truce between the two camps and the succession of the future kings of France was legitimized. Meanwhile, the Englishmen regarded Joan as a sorceress and conducted inquiries about her. But they did not find any misgivings on her part. On May 23, 1340, while Joan of Arc was leading the army to a camp, they were ambushed by English soldiers and she was captured. They accused her of heresy and was subjected to a trial. She was condemned to death and burned alive. But the trial was unfair. They violated many rules because the jury that tried Joan were all English clergy, while the rules required a balance from both countries. The war continued 22 years after her death, but the legitimacy to the throne of the French lineage continued. Twenty-five years later, Joan's trial was reviewed and she was cleared of the charges against her. The proceedings of the unfair trial were examined and it became a witness for her canonization by Pope Benedict XV on May 16, 1920. She is venerated as a patron for soldiers and one of the patrons of France. Lord, give us the courage of St. Joan of Arc to stand and fight for justice and impartiality Do I respect the rights of others, or do I pretend to be more privileged than they?

Details, credits, errata: This week we have the delightful Rob Weinert-Kendt, editor of American Theatre magazine and contributor to America, The New York Times, and many other discerning publications, and absolutely one of our favorite people. His terrific pitch was to watch Carl Theodor Dreyer’s 1928 silent drama The Passion of Joan of Arc, one of many movies made from the story of Joan’s trial, largely because, as Rob observes, there’s lots of documentary material about the trial, notably the transcript, available in English here. There are lots of Joans of Arc; Sam did indeed go to see the Manhattan Theatre Club’s terrible production of the George Bernard Shaw play with Rob, though he got the lead, Condola Rashad, mixed up with the lead from another bad Shaw production on Broadway, Sally Hawkins in Mrs. Warren’s Profession at the Roundabout. Poor Shaw. He’s a good playwright. Other notable Joans include The Messenger, starring Milla Jovovich and John Malkovich and directed by Luc Besson, his and Jovovich’s follow-up collaboration to their sci-fi flick The Fifth Element (The Messenger is not a success in any sense, but The Fifth Element slaps). Joan has been used by other playwrights, notably Bertolt Brecht, in Saint Joan of the Stockyards, which resets the story among unionizing Chicago meatpackers, and novelists including Terry Pratchett, whom you may remember from a few episodes ago, in his lovely Discworld novel Monstrous Regiment. Other filmed versions include George Méliès’ Jeanne D’Arc, which I’ll include below this paragraph on our website, and Das Mädschen Johanna, a Nazi version of the story. You can read Graham Greene’s review of it in The Spectator here. Our theme song is Louis Armstrong and His Hot 5’s Muskrat Ramble, made freely available by the Boston Public Library and audio engineering shop George Blood, LP through the Internet Archive. The Passion of Joan of Arc is in the public domain, and the image at the head of the page is from the film. All other material is copyright 2021 Sam Thielman and Alissa Wilkinson. As a teenager, God gave her a mission to liberate her country from foreign invaders. She was shot and wounded while leading troops in battle. She was forced to defend herself in court after she was accused of being a witch. Who is she? Find out more on "Heroes of the Faith" where we are inspired by the lives of the saints, so that we can become saints ourselves!
St. Joan of Arc KNEW, without a doubt and despite opposition and persecution, that God had called her to a special mission: to save the Catholic King and the Catholic Church in France - and ultimately to save souls for Christ. She was the heroic, warrior saint who shows us how to enter the battlefield for God!Moira of Modern Catholic Mom is a Midwest girl — though she lived for a short while in the South, and absolutely loved it — she still misses those winters! She met her husband, John, while filming a chastity video in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Clearly, they are big fans of irony. The rest, as they say, is history. Marriage and kids has been the best — and most unexpected — adventure of her life! She and John have six kids, work together in a family business and are are in various stages of homeschooling their kids. So far, so good.In her “free time” a.k.a. “when she should be doing something else” she loves writing about faith, family, friends, travel — and everything in between — over at ModernCatholicMom.com. A few random things about her: she used to travel the country and give chastity talks, once testified before Congress on the issue of abstinence education, was kissed on the forehead by St. John Paul II, and Nancy Drew and Anne of Green Gables helped her learn to love her red hair at a time in her life when she absolutely hated it. Her biggest surprise in life has been finding so much happiness in the craziness of the life of a wife and mother. She wouldn't change it for anything!Read more about today's featured podcaster and saint here: https://www.littlewithgreatlove.com/st-joan-of-arc/This podcast is sponsored by: Littlewithgreatlove.com + Redbird.love.Special thanks to slacker, Jeff Sanchez, for voiceover work; teammates Michelle Hillaert, Danielle Knight & Alyssa Sanchez; and musician Rev.
