# Human Behavior: https://erickimphotography.com/blog/2024/12/01/human-philosophy/ So I think the whole time my quest was seeking to understand human behavior; this is my primary focus and inquiry about almost everything, my primum mobile, my first moving force. For example, I think my introduction to sociology and psychology philosophy and now economics actually is all around this question. ## Is human behavior “rational”? According to Mises, and the Austrian school of economics, they believe it is rational. Not rational like if we think it is wise or foolish, but rational in so far much as giving individual agents, individual human beings dignity and respect, and knowing that as much as we might like to wag fingers about them doing something foolish, in fact, there is a deeper sense of logic that we may not understand on a superficial level, but there is often a deeper sense of meaning that we must try to decipher. For example, when I often look at the behaviors of others, it seems befuddling to me, and also foolish on my end. But, I'm probably 100% certain the other people think the same about myself. And it seems unfitting for me to just put myself on a pedestal, and assume that all of my thoughts actions aims and desires are supreme, and everybody else beneath me is inferior. The truth is I actually see myself as a pretty ordinary normal kind of average person. I think perhaps instead, my superpower lies around the fact that i'm kind of like a big kid, like I'm the most curious person that I personally know. And I think in modern day times, especially becoming an adult, I think **curiosity is courageous**. *** ## why do we like to criticize and critique other people? So what is the number one favorite past time of Americans? Criticizing and critiquing the parenting behaviors of others. First, if people gonna wanna act basic in a way that you don't approve of, why do you care? Like are you going to pick it McDonald's and Starbucks Frappuccino's, trying to tell everyone not to consume it? To me this is kind of a waste of time and not very effective. So then if I think about this deeply, why is it that we criticizing critique other people, their behaviors their thoughts the way they spend their money etc.? First, I cannot speak for other people but let me talk from my perspective. So for myself, maybe for me I'm trying to put myself in the issues of others, and essentially I'm just trying to share information knowledge wisdom experiences , trying to “help”others, as if I was them. Now the reason why this might not always be a good thing is that there are a lot of people who do not want to be “helped”. There are some people who want to simply keep to themselves, and they don't want to be disturbed, and that's totally cool too.

Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady, who will be singing in Marble City Opera's second annual Stalactites, Sopranos, & Stilettos concert on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at Historic Cherokee Caverns. Tickets are on sale at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets Frank mentions Dr. Randall Lange who writes children's books featuring his dog Josh. The current Josh is number 4. Kathryn went to see a tiger named Mike VII at Louisiana State University. Frank is reminded of the live tigers used in a photo shoot with Mark & Brian for the cover of the Los Angeles Radio Guide. Frank received a postcard about the Opera America conference in Los Angeles in June, 2024. He also received a save-the-date postcard from the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge. The Frank & Friends Show logo is on the postcard because Frank will emcee their annual gala on November 17, 2023. The activities director of a retirement home left a message for Frank about an upcoming performance. She was actually trying to reach an elderly singer and his wife who also call themselves Frank & Friends. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. You can also get several of Sam Venable's books, signed by the author and the new book by former UT counsel Ron Leadbetter. Kathryn and her husband went on vacation to Cancun. She was able to turn off her phones and read books on the beach. They saw sea turtles laying eggs on the beach. Kathryn stops at the Buc-ee's in Leeds, Alabama when driving between Baton Rouge and Knoxville. Frank enjoyed the brisket and egg burrito at the Buc-ee's in Sevierville. Kathryn likes the Dr Pepper Float ice cream from Blue Bell. Frank has deja vu because he also talked about the ice cream with Becca James. Frank's wife Jere got a coupon for a free Starbucks Frappuccino because she is in the top 1% of Frappuccino customers. Jere's sister has thousands of points on her Starbucks card. Kathryn likes the chicken strips at Chick-fil-A but usually has to wait for them to be cooked whereas the nuggets are cooked in advance. Frank and his wife made reservations at a fancy restaurant in downtown Knoxville. They had to put down a credit card number to make the reservation and they will be charged $25 a person if they don't show up. Becoming a Photographer READ MORE PDF DOWNLOAD What does it mean to be a photographer? Being a photographer means the camera is your way to engage with, interact with, and interpret the world around you. Why the notion of becoming? I'm starting to think and believe that progress, and “getting better“ at something is too soft of a concept. Why? It is mostly a post industrial one, in which we are trying to use numbers, and other quantitative measures to rank one another. The ethos behind that is a new religion; the defecation of numbers, or data. For example, the underlying ethos behind Google and a lot of tech companies is if data doesn't prove it, it is not substantial. However, to live in life in which you are just relying on data is a cowardly one. Why? I think the reason why people rely on numbers so much is that they lack faith in themselves. Rather than pursuing their own inner artistic ingenuity, like Steve Jobs, people just allay their responsibility and outsource the risk to “control groups“, or “focus groups“. There is no focus group on earth that would have initially approved Steve Jobs‘s vision of the iPhone without having a physical keyboard. Remember just a decade ago when Blackberry phones with the physical keyboard was all the rage? And when the iPhone first came up with a touch keyboard, how much criticism and critique it got? Or when Steve Jobs first made the iPad, how much hate mail he got for not having USB ports? Detaching yourself from numbers In today's world, I believe that one of the best ways to become more courageous, is a “via negativa” (Taleb) one. For example, acts of subtraction makes one more courageous. Or acts of deletion make one more courageous. For example, physically deleting, and permanently deleting files on your computer takes great courage. Or permanently deleting email, instead of archiving it and hoarding it forever. How funny is it that we millennials disdain how our parents hoard all of this physical junk in their garage is, yet we hoard all of our data on the cloud. Therefore, a great act of courage you could do is just delete your Instagram. Nowadays, I think having an Instagram is almost akin to saying you go to McDonald's. Everyone has one, thus you should have one. But then again 80% of America is obese, should you? Most people drink Coca-Cola; should you? Most people prefer to drink a Starbucks Frappuccino; should you? When is it wise to take the harder road? Another strange bias we have in America is that the more difficult the path, the harder is, the more virtuous it is. However, I believe this to be quite foolish. Maybe then it would be more virtuous for us to use a horse and carriage instead of an automobile car. As for us photographers, perhaps the most basic thing we could learn actually how to do is how to build and maintain our own website and blog. Our own self hosted domain. Yes, there is some level of technical difficulty which is required of us, yet it is still a quadrillion times easier than learning how to code. For example, I only know the basics of FTP, website domain hosting stuff, HTML, etc. I know the purest basics to just get done what I need to get done. But beyond that, I have no idea. I have no idea how to hand code my own website; I prefer to just use templates. And no, learning how to self build your own website by hand is not virtuous. I recently had a conversation with an aspiring artist hipster who said he wanted to learn how to build his own website from hand, but in reality, my sense was he was making zero progress on it. That for him, i

I chat with popular personal finance personality Kerry Taylor from Squawkfox about how she got into the personal finance sphere and why she's a big advocate of the second-hand economy. Long description: Kerry Taylor's blog Squawkfox was one of the first personal finance blogs I stumbled upon when I was starting my personal finance journey in my early 20s. And now, so many years later I got the chance to chat with her on the podcast all about her own journey from computer science student, to living in rural British Columbia, to moving back to her hometown of Toronto, to now being a constant voice in The Globe & Mail and CBC. One of the big reasons I really wanted to have Kerry on the show was because she has an awesome sense of style, but she doesn't break the bank to stay fashionable. She's a huge advocate of the second-hand economy, and it all started with trying to save money when buying clothes for her daughter. When she discovered that there were a number of consignment shops and Facebook groups dedicated to buying and selling quality second-hand goods, she got hooked. And pretty much convinced me (and you once you listen) to start taking advantage of the second-hand economy too! Thanks so much Kerry for chatting with me and sharing your insight and story with me!
