Something we say at Stay Forth Designs is that the abundant life isn't a unicorn. It is possible to live an abundant life and it's made possible by pursing health before impact. When we find health we naturally find happiness and begin to live out of abundance instead of scarcity. But what is happiness? On today's episode, Alan has a great conversation with Pastor, Author, and O.G podcast guest Daniel Fusco about his new book Crazy Happy: Nine Surprising Ways to Live the Truly Beautiful Life and how Daniel would beat The Rock in a fight. HAPPY THANKSGIVING! From everyone at Stay Forth Designs we hope that even in the midst of these interesting times you have a blessed day with your those closest to you. On today's episode of the podcast Alan sits down with Jeff and Terra Mattson for a great conversation about warning signs leaders need to be aware of and pay attention to. Jeff and Terra recently spoke at our Healthy Leaders Summit. About Jeff and Terra Living Wholehearted founders Jeff & Terra Mattson are passionate about living lives that reflect integrity, healing, and authenticity. They met in 1998 at Seattle Pacific University where they first began to hone their skills and passion for leadership and relationships under Psychologists and relationship experts Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott, Theologians Drs. Tim & Kerry Dearborn and Dr. Rick Steele, as well as attorney and change-agent, Dr. Skip Lee. Later influences have included CEO & Executive Director of the Charitable Murdock Trust Dr. Steve Moore, Bill Thralls and Bruce McNicol of Trueface Ministries, Dr. Michelle Watson-Canfield of the Abba Project, Dr. Ken Canfield of the National Center for Fathering, and their own Pastor and his wife, Bill & Kathy Towne. Together, Jeff & Terra have over 20 years of experience in the helping professions and leadership development. Jeff holds a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington and has decades of experience as a leader in start-up companies, family businesses, and non-profit organizations including universities and ministry settings. Since 2011, he has worked with business and organizational leaders to develop their potential and solve the people-issues that keep them up at night! He is master-level certified in the Core Values Index (CVI) and a certified facilitator of Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott’s SYMBIS program (Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts). Some of his organizational development clients include TriMet, ASSIST International, Bridgewell Resources, Subway, Stoel Rives Law Firm, The Dentist Off Main, Door to Grace, and Rolling Hills Community Church. Terra holds a master’s degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from George Fox University in Portland, Oregon. She is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor and now works as an executive coach. For the last fifteen years, she has run a thriving private practice while presenting to women, couples, and leaders in various settings including the American Association of Christian Counselors World Conference (2009, 2011, 2017). She is the Clinical Director for Living Wholehearted Counseling and has served as an adjunct professor with George Fox University’s Graduate Counseling Department. She has previous experience in community mental health, human resources, entrepreneurship, and pastoral/church ministries. She is the author of Courageous: Being Daughter Rooted in Grace (David C. Cook, 2020) and the visionary for the Courageous Gathering, a virtual conference-on-the-go resourcing women for the issues of today. Together, Jeff and Terra co-authored Shrinking the Integrity Gap: Between What Leaders Preach and Live (David C. Cook, 2020) and founded a global movement, Courageous Girls, an online resource to help moms navigate the needs of their daughters at every stage of their growing years. They are the co-hosts of the Living Wholehearted Podcast and run the Living Wholehearted Lodge and Retreat. They truly enjoy having to live what they preach as they teach, speak, write, and lead together. The Mattson’s and the Living Wholehearted Team are a trusted resource for the community. Many people ask how counseling, leadership coaching, and organizational development all go together. It’s simple. Though we all try to compartmentalize our lives, we were never meant to live that way. Attempting to segregate our heart from our mind, or our work from our home, or our pain from our story, impacts all of our relationships, with ourselves, God, and others. Combining the disciplines of counseling, coaching, and organizational development makes for a well-rounded approach that is rarely offered. Their clinical team of counselors help those who are ready to embrace their pain and walk towards wholeness. Their executive coaches and organizational leadership team come alongside business and organizational leaders who seek to help their people thrive at work and life. Often this means helping leaders unravel the complexities of relationships within their particular venues. Whether a family or a large organization, all are systems made up of the most valuable resources…people. Living Wholehearted was formed to help these systems thrive, and then influence for the greater good. Jeff & Terra currently live outside Portland, Oregon raising their two teen daughters. In their spare time, they love adventures in the great outdoors, including fly-fishing, camping, and outdoor movies. Jeff is a singer/songwriter and lover of all things college football (Go Ducks!). Terra enjoys painting with her youngest daughter or reading a book alongside with her oldest. She loves deep conversations alongside a gooey caramel latte and long walks on the beach (with or without Jeff). Some of their favorite authors and thinkers include Bob Dylan, Henri Nouwen, Dietrich Bonheoffer, the guys at Trueface Ministries (Bill, Bruce, & John), Curt Thompson, and of course, C.S. Lewis. Healthy Leaders Summit Consider Coaching
In a season that is more draining, more overwhelming, and more demanding than many leaders have encountered, there is the occasional glimmer of hope in the form of good news. And some good news is this: burnout is NOT inevitable. You can take steps to ensure that you're leading yourself well and moving toward health as a leader even in the midst of challenging times. But what are they? How do we stay proactive about our own health so we can continue to lead those we're entrusted to lead? Coach and consultant Alan Briggs shares practical encouragement to that end with Jenni Catron in this episode of The Jenni Catron Leadership Podcast. In this episode, you'll learn:why you need both spiritual and practical rhythmswhat to do when you're "leading on tired"which comes first: the work or the workmanshipthe difference between tired, exhausted, burnoutwhat rhythms we need and whenwhether you're a blank canvas or an ice sculpturethe difference between loneliness and isolationhow to seek clarity instead of certaintyhow to move from reactive to proactiveAbout Alan:Alan Briggs is crazy about helping hungry leaders GET HEALTHY and REACH MORE IMPACT. How do we live in a way that doesn’t leave us drained and weary? How do we lead from places of refreshment and vitality instead? Alan recently enjoyed a great conversation about “sustainable leadership” with Alan Briggs from Stay Forth Designs. Briggs work intersects at many points with what Gem and Alan have been doing for a while now. On today's episode, Alan sits down with Dr. Reggie McNeal and the two have a great conversation about the future of the church and opportunities for the church to leave the building. About Reggie Dr. Reggie McNeal enjoys helping people, leaders, and Christian organizations determine and experience epic wins with Kingdom impact. He currently serves as City Coach for GoodCities of Minneapolis MN. As City Coach Reggie works with community leaders around the country to build cross-domain collaborative efforts that can move the needle on big societal issues. Reggie has helped to shape the church leadership conversation through his extensive speaking schedule and work as an author. His books include Revolution in Leadership: Creating Apostles for Tomorrow’s Church (Abingdon Press, 1998), A Work of Heart: Understanding How God Shapes Spiritual Leaders (Jossey-Bass, 2000), The Present Future: Six Tough Questions for the Church (Jossey-Bass, 2003), Practicing Greatness: Seven Disciplines of Extraordinary Spiritual Leaders (Jossey-Bass, 2006), Get A Life! Reggie’s Kingdom Come: Why We Must Quit Our Obsession Over Fixing the Church and What We Should Do Instead (Tyndale, 2015) challenges the church to shift its narrative from a church-centric to a kingdom-centric ministry agenda. His latest book, Kingdom Collaborators: 8 Signature Themes of Leaders Who Turn the World Upside Down (IVP, 2018), details the character and competencies of effective kingdom leaders. Reggie served in local church leadership for over twenty years, including being the founding pastor of a congregation. There are moments in life that feel like "a leap." And more specifically a leap without full knowledge of where you'll land. Maybe you can relate with a moment like this, or maybe you are creeping toward the edge of a moment like this and it's both terrifying and exciting. In this episode, David and Alan sit down to discuss Alan's recent and BIG decision to jump head-first into "Stay Forth Designs" full-time. Up until recently, Stay Forth had been a substantial "side hustle" for Alan and his wife Julie, where they pour into leaders through training, coaching, consulting and making content. At the beginning of this summer they discerned that Alan would take the leap into doing it all "full-time." Alan unpacks his heart for helping leaders find health and all of the fear and excitement that came from this decision. We hope that this conversation gives you insight and encouragement as you discern and make big decisions in your life. Find out more about Stay Forth Designs and what we do at www.stayforth.com
Subversive means to undermine an established system. The established culture that we bow to is one of little rest. In fact, if you don't rest, you will probably be celebrated. This exists both inside and outside the church. In this episode, Alan explores the depths of Sabbath with author A.J. Swoboda. A.J. challenges cultural expectations and dysfunction surrounding the sabbath and offers insight and rhythms to help leaders break free from our restlessness, into a life of rest and health. We talk about rest at Stay Forth Designs a lot, and it is intentional, because we truly believe this is a message that leaders need to hear. Connect with A.J.
