Stefani Goerlich, professor, author of “Sprinkles,” & a sex therapist, discusses her journey into the field of sexuality, working with students & patients. In this conversation, Stefani Goerlich discusses that while kink & BDSM have become more mainstream in recent years, many "vanilla" people still find the concept off-putting or disturbing. However, consensual exploration of power dynamics & erotic psychology can profoundly deepen intimate connections in relationships. She shares a powerful story of helping a couple navigate the difference between consensual kink & abuse. TAKEAWAYSUnderstanding what is normal and healthy in relationships requires unlearning societal biases.Consensual kink and BDSM can be misunderstood and stigmatized, but it is important to differentiate between consensual kink and abuse.Maintaining boundaries as a sex therapist is crucial to ensure the therapeutic relationship is not influenced by personal experiences or biases.Exploring & striving to understand each person's erotic identity is important for couples with differing desire levels. When couples want to open their relationship, clarifying their motivations is important. Partners supporting someone with trauma should reframe their role as holding space and providing support.EPISODE LINKSStefani's Podcast - Securing SexualityStefani's - Securing Sexuality ConferenceStefani's - Counseling ServicesStefani's Book - The Leather CouchStefani's Book - Sprinkles on TopStefani's Book - Kink Affirming PracticeDownload the Duluth Model Wheel of Power and ControlLeah & Willow's King & Queen of Hearts Intimacy Toolkit is on sale. So what do you do when you're a vanilla person and it turns out that your partner has a kinky streak? The fact that you both want different things from sex doesn't have to mean the end of your relationship, so let's talk about how to make it work. I am joined once again by Stefani Goerlich, award-winning author of The Leather Couch: Clinical Practice with Kinky Clients. How can people better navigate the strong feelings they might have when discovering a partner's kink? When partners have different fantasies and desires, how do you find common ground? How can opening up a relationship help partners bridge a sexual desire discrepancy? Is it always possible to make things work when partners want very different things from sex? Stefani is a certified sex therapist, a kink-affirming therapist, a master social worker, a media and intimacy consultant, an award-winning author, and a conference presenter. She's also a podcaster at Securing Sexuality. Her book With Sprinkles on Top is a sex-positive and compelling guide for people with a desire discrepancy in relationships, particularly between kinky and vanilla partners. She assists people in navigating relationships and specializes in gender, sexuality, and relationships in her practice. She also focuses on kink and mental health and how tech fits in, especially in a constantly changing digital world. We talked about how kink is relational, but she doesn't address the how-to's of kink but helps people communicate regarding consent, negotiation, and how to live out healthy power exchange roles and scenarios. She talked about the commonly viewed negativity surrounding kink ...it's "either the butt of a joke or a threat". People don't have good models of what a healthy consensual normative kink looks like. She defines kink as whatever is unusual in its place and time, which also varies greatly across the world. She discussed how novelty inspires our brain's arousal responses & we'd be bored if we were the carbon copy of our partners. She thinks hiding kinks is what leads to boring routine sex and dead bedrooms. She explained the scientific proof that kink can improve your life, increases the feel-good hormones in us, lower stress, increase closeness and improve bonding. There have been actual scientific studies to prove this! She also addressed how to navigate differences in a relationship and how best to prevent contempt and shaming of a partner.Connect with Stefani: www.boundtogethercounseling.com Podcast/conference: https://www.securingsexuality.comInsta: @BoundTogetherCounselingMastodon: @Tzefira_Neviah@ioc.exchangeBlueSky: @stefanigoerlich.bsky.socialBook (affiliate link this podcast may receive an advertising fee for purchases made through links, which are at no added cost to the purchaser): https://amzn.to/3qAY3AmWith Sprinkles on Top invites readers into playful and sex-positive exploration and affirms that vanilla and kinky people can thrive together in healthy relationships.RUAN'S BOOKS/AUDIOBOOKS:Neighborhood Sex Secrets: Buy links:https://books2read.com/u/3R5MZjhttps://amzn.to/3CVxzw8Decadent Erotica: https://open.spotify.com/show/1lBhpFaZB6TPpN1mbeOwdiRuan's Books, Audiobooks: https://books.ruanwillowauthor.com/Planet X/Podnation Roku tv station: https://player.frontlayer.com/live/fl427618Support the showSign up for Ruan's newsletters: https://subscribepage.io/ruanwillowhttps://linktr.ee/RuanWillowRuan is a Manscaped Ambassador get 20% OFF+Free Shipping with promo code RUANWILLOW20 at https://www.manscaped.com/ Ruan is a Kiirro Toys Ambassador get 10% OFF with code RUANWILLOW10 at https://www.kiiroo.com/Copyright 2021-2023 Pink Infinity Publishing LLC

We will explore the importance and difficulties of communication, and how to exercise empathy to understand how the people around us experience the world and create a fuller and better relationship with our peers.-Humans are not programmable, but we are teachable and the only way we learn is if somebody is willing to take the time to say: “This is what I need.”-Stefani's Links:TwitterLinkedIn Podcast (Securing Sexuality)Conference (Securing Sexuality)Books--Thanks for being an imposter - a part of the Imposter Syndrome Network (ISN)! Imagine you are a sex therapist and one of your patients discloses a sexual interest that either makes you personally uncomfortable or is something you are totally unfamiliar with. This often happens when kinky people seek out sex therapy, and it sometimes results in clients not getting the help they really need. So let's talk about navigating sex therapy with kinky clients. We're going to discuss what therapists need to know, as well as how patients can identify kink-affirming providers. I am joined once again by Stefani Goerlich, award-winning author of The Leather Couch: Clinical Practice with Kinky Clients and its sequel, titled Kink-Affirming Practice: Culturally Competent Therapy from The Leather Chair. Some of the topics we discuss include: How much training do sex therapists usually get in the area of kink and BDSM anyway? How do you deal with a problem like sexual shame? How do you navigate power dynamics in the therapy office with kinky clients? What should you do when a client expresses a sexual interest that makes you uncomfortable? What should you do when a client's sexual interests pose a very high risk of harm to the self or others? How do you encourage safety without shaming them? Where's the best place to find a kink-affirming therapist? Find kink-aware professionals through the NCSF directory or the AASECT directory. Thank you to our sponsors! Most of us have had a kinky fantasy at some point in our lives, and many of us have actual experience with kink in the bedroom as well. In fact, nationally representative US surveys find that at least one-third of adults have engaged in some kind of BDSM. However, despite how common kink and BDSM are, myths and misconceptions abound. So let's talk about kink! I am joined by Stefani Goerlich, award-winning author of The Leather Couch: Clinical Practice with Kinky Clients. Stefani recently published a sequel to this book called Kink-Affirming Practice: Culturally Competent Therapy from The Leather Chair. Some of the topics we discuss include: What does the term "kink" actually mean? Why obsessing over the origins of kink can be problematic. What's the connection between kink and sex? Is BDSM always sexual? What to do when your sexual fantasies and desires conflict with your political values. The kink spectrum: from dark and brooding to fun, playful, and silly. What counts as fetishization, and when does it cross a line? Common things people get wrong about kink and BDSM.
