As the Radical Thoughts Podcast is no longer active, I am making these old bonus episodes from Patreon publicly available so that listeners don't have to pay for an inactive podcast. - Patrick Amogh, the cohost of the old Symptomatic Redness podcast, sits down with Patrick to discuss the Marxist obsession with method and totality, interrogating what this implies about the unanswered questions of the communist project. -- Rob Lucas on "Feeding the Infant": https://soundcloud.com/swampsidechats/150-error-and-feeding-the-infant

Like most other political terms, the word "neoliberal" has been used so much to describe so many disparate things that it has ceased to have meaning. Well, unfortunately neoliberalism is real and it is an economic idea and political project that completely dominates every aspect of modern capitalist society and even our resistance to it. So, listen up and learn what we just learned about how much everything sucks. In the third part of the final series of Symptomatic Redness, Derick and Amogh discuss the history of the left podcast scene, leading them to a discussion of the upcoming presidential election and the DSA’s role in it, and the question of how much has really changed since 2004, or even 1968. After Symptomatic Redness’s final run, its place in your feed will be filled by the new and improved Pop The Left with C. Derick Varn and Douglas Lain.
The boys--all the good ones--sat down with C. Derick Varn of Pop the Left and the Symptomatic Redness (which can be found on the Zero Books podcast feed) to talk about Socialism in One Country and/or Socialist Internationalism. We tackled the topic that has plagued the workers' movement from the early days of the Socialist International and wrapped it up quite nicely. We have answered the national question and can now proceed forward to proletarian victory. In this teaser, Derick and Amogh discuss contemporary right-wing American politics, and whether there even is such a thing.
In the first part of the final series of episodes of Symptomatic Redness, Derick and Amogh look back over the past five years of the show to consider how the political and intellectual landscape has changed, consider the various left-wing responses to the financial crisis, and return to a question that has been central to the show from the beginning: what would a Marxist theory of mind look like?
Frithjoff Bergmann spent most of his academic career at the University of Michigan, where he was a professor and visible political activist. He taught also at The University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University and The University of California at Santa Cruz. His book New Work, New Culture recounts the development of Bergmann's ideas on how humanity might devise an alternative to the job system. This week’s podcast is available for everyone but, starting soon we’ll be returning to our usual approach of two podcasts a week, one for everyone and one for our patrons. We’ll be phasing out Derick Varn’s Symptomatic Redness and introducing two new podcasts. The first one, with Derick Varn and myself, will be called Pop the Left. Long-time listeners to this podcast may remember an earlier incarnation of this one. The idea will be to tackle longstanding problems and issues in left or, more specifically, socialist politics. The second podcast that we’ll be introducing will be on the topic of sectarian splits on the Marxist left and might be entitled splitting. If you’re a fan of this podcast and want to hear all of the new podcasts that are coming consider becoming a patron. We’ll also be releasing our videos as podcasts for patrons in December, and restarting our patron first video series on the history of communism.
In this first part of the promo episode of the newly resurrected Pop The Left podcast, C. Pop The Left will replace Symptomatic Redness as a fixture in your Zero Books feed, but the final episode of Symptomatic Redness with Amogh and Derick is forthcoming.

We sat down with C. Derick Varn and solved all the problems that are currently ailing the left. We reconciled the divergent currents of Marxism and wove together the materialist and idealist dichotomy with resounding success, but then lost an hour and a half of audio and were forced to restart the recording; what resulted was a meandering, but entertaining, discussion about just about everything... and religion. Derick Varn continues his conversation with Zero Books author and media star Ben Burgis. They pivot to more arcane topics, beginning with Trotsky and Trot organizations. What are the ideological differences between the ISO and the Spartacus League? They start by recollecting how small the Marxist tendency was in the 90s as opposed to its relative popularity today, but quickly move on to the difference between dialectical logic and Aristotelian logic. Amogh Sahu returns for a conversation about escaping from identity politics, Marxism's "liberal" roots, and whether pessimism is justified? Is Marxism an optimistic approach to politics. Is Douglas Lain too focussed on Marx's theory of value. Is Marx's theory of credit money to be taken as separate from his idea of money as a commodity? What is political determinism and what is economism? And so on and so on...

Michael Tracey is a freelance journalist who has written for publications including VICE, The Daily Beast, The American Conservative, and The Guardian and he was formerly a reporter for TYT. Tracey is also a member of a small set of leftish Russia collusion skeptics. He’s on the list that includes Glenn Greenwald, Matt Taibbi, and Aaron Mate along with a few others. In this podcast we discuss the Mueller Report, the Barr letter, the Russia collusion investigation, and the failure of most journalists to be skeptical and consistent enough since 2016. I want to say that I’m aware that many people feel as though we won’t know the truth about Trump’s involvement with Russia until after the Mueller report is released to the public. My feeling is that whatever is in that report, it’s clear that the idea that Trump conspired with Russia to fix the election is no longer viable. It’s a dead end politically, and maybe even a counterproductive if we want to protect democratic institutions and civil liberties. This week’s podcast is available in full for our patrons. Ader as well as on research inspired as I summarize, critique and refute aspects of Ader’s book. I’m really eager to get started on this series and will make the audio from these videos available for free as audio podcasts on this RSS feed. Help me get started. From an essay by Tietze and Elizabeth Humphrys: Anti-politics and the Illusions of Neoliberalism We live in anti-political times. After a twentieth century in which Western societies experienced the rise and entrenchment of mass representative institutions, where hundreds of millions of people accepted that politics was the main way to have their social interests advanced, these arrangements have ever more obviously fallen into disrepair, decay and even frank breakdown. Part Two of this conversation is available, in full, for our supporters on patreon

This week I am delighted to welcome Sean Michael Wilson to the show. Sean Michael Wilson is Scottish comic book writer, who now lives and works in Japan. In the last couple of years, Sean Michael has released a couple of explicitly political graphic novels: 'Parecomic: The Story of Michael Albert and Participatory Economics' 'Fight the Power!
