Tune in to the latest episode of the Free Thought Project podcast where Jason and Matt reconnect with Sal Mayweather, aka Sal the Agorist. Known for his influential presence as a social media commentator, agorist, cypherpunk, and Rothbardian crypto anarchist, Sal brings a wealth of knowledge and radical insights to the table. His book "Anti Politics" has already stirred the public discourse, and his deep engagement with crucial issues continues to captivate his audience. In this engaging session, we dive into the critical importance of not just owning but actively using cryptocurrency to safeguard personal financial sovereignty. Sal elucidates on the ominous reality of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) and how they have empowered governments to potentially control individual financial transactions at an unprecedented scale. We also explore a fascinating piece of libertarian history, discussing the possibility that the Libertarian Party was initially started as a humorous experiment by Samuel Edward Konkin III. Additionally, the conversation shifts to current global issues, where Sal critically analyzes the impact of anti-Israel protests, suggesting that they might be inadvertently escalating tensions rather than aiding Palestinian causes. We also tackle the recent development with the global withdrawal of one of the COVID-19 vaccines. This episode is packed with critical analyses and thought-provoking dialogue that challenges conventional narratives and encourages listeners to think deeply about the direction in which our society and freedoms are headed. Join us for a deep dive into these pressing issues with one of the most articulate voices in the liberty movement. Jason Bivins is a specialist in religion and American culture an is the author of 2008's Religion of Fear: The Politics of Horror in Conservative Evangelicalism. He has also published multiple articles, review essays, and occasional pieces on religion, politics, and culture in the United States. His most recent book is Embattled America: The Rise of Anti-Politics and America's Obsession with Religion (forthcoming, Oxford University Press, April 2022). A child of the era of the Satanic Panic - the unfounded moral hysteria around devil worship that gripped much of the US and Canada in the 1980s and 90s - Jason's interest and study of religion has been driven in large part by the experiences of his metal-loving, comic book-reading youth. Here he talks to Kelly and John about how conservative evangelicals manipulate and embrace horror tropes for their own ends in books like Left Behind, the story of Hell Houses, and how are cultural fractured and broke all our brains sometime in the mid 1990s. If you want to connect with Jason, you can email him at jcbivins@ncsu.edu.
Histories of political religion since the 1960s often center on the rise of the powerful conservative evangelical voting bloc since the 1970s. One of the beliefs that has united these citizens is the idea that they are treated unfairly or are marginalized, despite their significant influence on public life. From the ascent of Reagan to the "Contract with America," from 9/11 to Obama to Trump--these claims have moved steadily to the center of conservative activism. Scholars of religion have approached these phenomena with great caution, generally focusing on institutional history, or relying on journalistic conveniences like "populism," or embracing the self-understandings of evangelicals themselves. None of these approaches is sufficiently calibrated to decoding the fierce convergence of online conspiracy theory, public violence, white supremacy, and religious authoritarianism. Accepting the narrative of Embattlement on its own terms, or examining it as mere turbulence on the path of American pluralism, overlooks how such deeper structural or atmospheric conditions work through this discourse to undermine the actual practice of democratic politics. Exploring the impact of these claims through case studies ranging from the Tea Party to Birthers to anti-sharia laws, Embattled America: The Rise of Anti-Politics and America's Obsession with Religion (Oxford UP, 2022) digs deeper into the debates between Martyrs (those who profess persecution) and Whistleblowers (those who sanctimoniously refute such claims). Hidden beneath each of these episodes is a series of ambivalences about democracy that require attention. Jason Bivins argues that the claims of Martyrs and Whistleblowers are symptoms of America's larger failings to strengthen the conditions for democratic life, and thus that rather than engaging their claims on the merits, concerned citizens should reassess fundamental democratic norms as part of a broader challenge to embolden American citizenship and institutions. Jason C. Bivins is Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at North Carolina State University. He is the author of three previous books including, most recently, Spirits Rejoice!: Jazz and American Religion. He has written widely for popular and academic media, has taught for The Great Courses, and has recorded multiple albums of improvised music on guitar. Welcome to Episode 517 of the LOTS Project Podcast: "Exploring Anarchy: Debunking Myths and Misconceptions"! In this episode, we delve into anarchy, dispelling long-held myths and misconceptions. Anarchy is often misunderstood as chaos, violence, and lawlessness, but it's far from that. We explore how anarchy is not synonymous with chaos, why not all anarchists encourage violence, and how anarchy doesn't mean a society without rules. Plus, we discuss why anarchy isn't anti-social and why anarchists aren't necessarily against organization. Join us as we explore anarchy in its truest form, challenging preconceived notions! Bryan Caplan is a professor of economics at George Mason University and the author of several books, including Open Borders - The Science and Ethics of Immigration, The Case Against Education and the Myth of the Rational Voter.Bryan is one of the most iconoclastic contemporary thinkers, and had a major influence on the themes of this podcast. His books explain much of the emergent incentives created by the political process that stymie economic growth. In this episode, we talk about his new book "Voters as Mad Scientists - Essays on Political Rationality" and use it as a starter to talk about a variety of topics:Bryan on how the alignment of "Chaotic Good" in the world of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) fits his non-conformist style of thinking and practice of breaking bad or unethical laws, as long as you can get away with itWhy voters love to hate business and how the Stockholm Syndrome can help explain it: people like to ally with the powerful, even if they're rich, against rich people or business with less or no political power to hurt themThe politics of what sounds good vs. what is good - explained by social desirability bias, exposed by revealed preferences ("actions speak louder than words") and cemented into practice by status quo biasBryan admits that he's been wrong about cryptocurrency and Bitcoin: F. A. Hayek's idea of de-nationalizing banking has won the day against all oddsIf you're a regular listener to this podcast, you'll chuckle when Bryan compares how someone telling him about Bitcoin for the first time with someone telling him about starting a new country on an island (Prospera is not literally a country though). If starting a new jurisdiction with better laws sounds like a crazy but great idea to you, and your D&D alignment is Lawful-Neutral, Neutral-Good or Chaotic-Good, then come check it out and help us build it - the schedule for coming events is here.

"Why Are We Still Governed by Baby Boomers and the Remarkably Old?," inquires The New York Times. "Why Do Such Elderly People Run America?," The Atlantic wonders. "Gerontocracy Is Hurting Democracy," insists New York Magazine's Intelligencer. "Too old to run again? Biden faces questions about his age as crises mount," The Guardian reports. Though these headlines are framed as exploratory questions, news media seem to have their minds made up: the problem with Washington is that it's chock full of geezers. In recent years, we've often heard that U.S. policymaking, helmed at the federal level by seventy- and eighty-somethings like Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and Nancy Pelosi, and at the state level by the similarly aged Dianne Feinstein, Chuck Grassley and Pat Leahy, is simply growing too old and out of touch with the electorate. There's some credence to this, of course. It's certainly true that those occupying the most powerful positions in U.S. government, on the whole, don't legislate to the needs of the public – whether on healthcare, policing, education – the list goes on and on. But is that really because of legislators' age? Why does age have to be the focus in this analysis, rather than policy positions and, relatedly, class interests, which exist independent of age? Who does it serve to reduce the causes of U.S. austerity politics and violence to pat, Pepsi marketing-style "generation gap" discourse? On this episode show, we detail how "generations" analysis is ineffectual and, more often than not, misses the mark. We'll discuss how fears of a "gerontocracy" can – if not in intent, in effect – malign old age itself, stigmatize the elderly and, above all, distract from what could be a substantive critical analysis of real, more profound vectors of oppression such as class, racism, sexism and anti-LGBTQ currents. Our guest in Winslow Erik Wright.

Since the creation of the Premier League in 1992, collective identities developed in resistance to the commercialisation and commodification within football. These in turn have developed into more distinct ‘project identities' that seek bring about more profound social change through football. In this episode, we explore the role of fan activism in the debate on patterns of civic and political (dis)engagement in the age of so-called anti-politics. Our guests are Daniel Fitzpatrick of Aston University and Paddy Hoey of Liverpool John Moores University. We discuss: To what extent was Hillsborough a catalyst for activism, prior to 1992? How has the Fans Supporting Foodbanks campaign overcome tensions between rival groups of supporters? How critical were and are fanzines to building activist networks? All this and more in the latest episode of the Football and Society podcast! --- Follow Paddy on Twitter @PaddyHoey Follow Danny on Twitter @dfitz_politics --- If you like the podcast, please leave us a review so that others can find the podcast.
If the End of History was characterised by post-politics, and the 'populist decade' of the 2010s dominated by anti-politics, then how should we understand more recent phenomena? Are the following of a qualitatively different nature to anti-politics, namely: the intensification of culture wars, growing polarisation that does not always align neatly with class, of increasingly hysterical and personalised politics, and of the competition between escalating emergency politics? To commemorate the publication of the German edition of The End of the End of History, co-author Alex Hochuli was in conversation with historian of political thought, Anton Jäger at the Monacensia in Munich.

But we don't always clarify that good intentions and accurate data still aren't enough. You also need to know that you've collected the right data and asked the right questions, and these are both much, much harder than the introductory effective altruist material tends to let on. I first picked up James Ferguson's The Anti-Politics Machine a year ago, expecting to read about a failed development project that could have benefited from an evidence-based approach. But instead I found an intervention that could have been backed by every experiment in the world and still would have fallen apart, a program so profoundly shaped by the lens of “development economics” that its practitioners misinterpreted almost every facet of what they were doing.

Hello friends! Its beginning to look a lot of like Christmas, and what better way to mark the occasion than with another episode of Fully Automated! Today, we are very excited to bring you this episode with Christine Louis Dit Sully, author of the recent book, Transcending Racial Divisions: Will You Stand By Me? (Zero Books, 2021). Christine Louis-Dit-Sully grew up in an immigrant family, in the 93rd arrondissement of Paris, Seine-Saint-Denis — an area of France known for its racial diversity, its poverty, and its complicated relationship with law enforcement. She spent nearly 20 years as an academic in the discipline of Biology. She then left the sciences, and turned to the study of politics, focusing specifically on issues of race, identity, social justice and the demand for ‘safe spaces' in British and American universities. Today, she lives in the Black Forest region of Germany. In the introduction to Transcending Racial Divisions, Louis-Dit-Sully writes that, for her, questions about race and racism are both a “political and a personal concern.” She goes on to discuss the common belief that the advance of social liberalism in the west has meant real progress for racial minorities. The problem with this myth, she notes, is that today we are much less likely to see members of racial groupings as distinct individuals, with their own unique identities. Instead, we have seen the rise of so-called identity politics, and a tendency to see individuals first and foremost as members of a race. Indeed, she notes, in her personal experience, she is seen once again today as a black woman, whose “opinions and beliefs are apparently determined by her race.” Historically, racial thinking has been a hallmark of the right. However, worryingly, today it is also an increasingly common phenomena on the left. Now, some will say the left has good faith motivations in this turn. After all, given the history of racism, it is not entirely unfair to assume that the victims of racism might have something to say on the matter. Yet, she states, here we run into the problem of anti-politics. Because if we are ever to create real equality, we require the kind of power that can come only from a universalistic form of solidarity. However, the contemporary left's embrace of standpoint epistemology — the belief that an idea can be understood only from the standpoint of a certain group identity — means that groups are seen as immutable, and immune to the passage of time. Whiteness, for example, is equated with original sin, and blackness equated with injury, and perpetual victimhood. If this is true, she says, then politics itself — that is, our very ability to imagine political change — is destroyed. Clearly then, if we are to discover a universalistic basis for solidarity, we must find new ways of understanding the world. And, for Louis-Dit-Sully, this means a return to Marx.

Carter celebrates the 5th of November with guests Sal the Agorist and Daniel Wagner. Carter begins by recounting the origin story for Guy Fawkes Day and how it rose to public consciousness in America. Next, they discuss Biden's plan to mandate vaccination for employees of companies with as few as 100 employees. Carter reads some quotations from The Myth of the Rule of Law by John Hasnas, and Sal pushes back on the notion that politics is downstream from culture. The three then discuss the difference between chaos and anarchy and the difference between governance and government. After some disagreement about corporations and what they'd look like without government charters, Sal celebrates NFTs and a "tokenbrian explosion" in crypto before diving into what he means by "agorism." They address the age-old question of "what about the roads?" before turning to the Rittenhouse trial. The three disagree on Rittenhouse's culpability, but this leads to a broader consideration of firearms and mass shootings. Finally, they turn to peaceful parenting and the immorality and impracticality of hitting children as punishment. What a way to launch back into recording after a looong break for the summer. Sal Mayweather took the time to sit down with us to talk all things counter economy. Sal's appearances on podcasts and his presence on social media has fascinated us for quite a while. We were in talks with him to come on the show for some time and through scheduling conflicts and our hibernation, it kept getting postponed. We finally got to connect and it was a bonus that he just released his book, Anti-Politics (a #1 best seller in Anarchy on Amazon). We started with a dabble into the love affair with Mac Dre and then dove right into what Agorism is and how gray and black markets could quite possibly be the answer to thwarting the new religion of corporatism. Of course we mixed in a little crypto and 3d printer talk to round things out. The book is probably the best intro to Agorism I can find. Sal has spend many years and countless hours sifting through the written thoughts of leaders within the agorist movement and compiled the best of the best in a one stop shop called Anti-Politics. Support Sal. Find all his social media links, his podcast (The Agora), and his posts on his website. Take the time to explore it. In this episode of The Shift host, Doug McKenty discusses the idea of Agorism with Sal Mayweather, author of Anti-Politics and host of "The Agora" podcast. Agorism is the idea that the best way to dissolve authoritarian systems of government is simply to ignore them. By creating a "counter economy" separate from centralized means of production and unregulated by the state, these activists seek to bring down systems of oppression by simply circumventing them. In their view, political action only enables the very systems they are seeking to transmute through non-violent, civil disobedience. Today I'm talking with Jathan Sadowski from Monash University about the economic and political dimensions of digital capitalism. An emerging consensus sees digital data, its extraction and the concentration of Big Tech as signalling a dramatic shift towards a new age of “digital feudalism”: The story goes that digital services with minimal marginal costs enabled unprecedented market concentration in the hands of giant corporations, which thrive on capturing rents in the form of data they mine from end users. For many liberal scholars, this marks a dysfunctional phase of capitalism where innovation and competition are stifled, whereas profit-driven "socially legitimate" accumulation is displaced by rentierism. Jathan argues on the contrary that contemporary forms of digital value capture sit in the continuity of capitalist accumulation strategies. We talk about the Internet of Things, smart devices and energy grids, platform-based services, new forms of territorial sovereignty exerted by private companies which own digital urban infrastructures... but also about socialist alternatives to the dystopian present, which would necessitate socializing data and managing it as a public good. Nikki Lane's The Black Queer Work of Ratchet: Race, Gender, Sexuality, and the (Anti)Politics of Respectability (Palgrave MacMillan, 2019) enters as a corrective to the tendency to trivialize and (mis)appropriate African American language practices. The word ratchet has entered into a wider (whiter) American discourse the same way that many words in African American English have--through hip-hop and social media. Generally, ratchet refers to behaviors and cultural expressions of Black people that sit outside of normative, middle-class respectable codes of conduct. Ratchet can function both as a tool for critiquing bad Black behavior, and as a tool for resisting the notion that there are such things as "good" and "bad" behavior in the first place. This book takes seriously the way ratchet operates in the everyday lives of middle-class and upwardly mobile Black Queer women in Washington, DC who, because of their sexuality, are situated outside of the norms of (Black) respectability. The book introduces the concept of "ratchet/boojie cultural politics" which draws from a rich body of Black intellectual traditions which interrogate the debates concerning what is and is not "acceptable" Black (middle-class) behavior. Placing issues of non-normative sexuality at the center of the conversation about notions of propriety within normative modes of Black middle-class behavior, this book discusses what it means for Black Queer women's bodies to be present within ratchet/boojie cultural projects, asking what Black Queer women's increasing visibility does for the everyday experiences of Black queer people more broadly. This work makes reference to a few songs that really give a depth of understanding the concept of boujee and ratchet. A lot of sci-fi skirts around substantive questions of politics – is this a coincidence, or is there something about the genre that encourages it?
Steven welcomes Alyssa Bowen, a Ph.D. candidate in Global History at the University of North Carolina to the program to talk about her research into the Chile transnational solidarity movements of the 1970s and 1980s. The two chat about Bowen's article, “”Taking in the Broad Spectrum': Human Rights and Anti-Politics in the Chile Solidarity Campaign (UK) of the 1970s” in the Journal of Social History. They also touch on a viral Tweet and explore in some depth the concept of anti-politics. Have a listen!

Crypto Weekly | Cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Altcoin and ICO news from the week
Honestly, this was recorded quite some time ago so I can't quite remember what we spoke about BUT, here goes: - KuCoin is hacked to the tune of $200million, however apparently in another blatant copy of Binance policy, your funds are safu. - JP Morgan get caught with their pants down. In the financial world that means 10 years of spoofing the price of gold and silver. - CEO of Coinbase, Brian Armstrong, has offered severance packages to anyone more interested in political activism than furthering the mission of Coinbase. - Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy, dumps all of the company's cash reserves into Bitcoin. Plus more! Sorry for the delay friends!
Richard Seymour joins PTO to discuss the recent anti-lockdown protests in London, the broader phenomenon of covid denialism, and whether the emergence of anti-political currents - combined with the left's decline with the defeat of the Corbyn project - is laying the basis for the emergence of fascism. We also talked about how Donald Trump's Covid-19 diagnosis might effect his electoral chances.
In the third week of lockdown, Shadi and Damir talk about the Beatles versus the Stones, how the 1960s represent a kind of dangerous idealism grounded in universal values, and how there’s no escaping politics. Reading List: “The Coronavirus Killed the Revolution,” by Shadi Hamid “It’s imperative for the U.S. and China to work together on the coronavirus pandemic,” by Michael McFaul Jennifer Rubin’s Political Mathematics “National Identity is Made Up,” by Max Fisher and Amanda Taub

On this week's show we're analysing the federal election with Elizabeth Humphrys. With growing distrust of politicians and disillusionment with the electoral system, how does the environment movement engage with anti-politics?For many, the victory of the Liberal-National Coalition at the federal election was crushing. With the polls pointing to a Labor win, their failure has lead to a scatter-fire of recriminations. But votes for the two main parties have been falling for years - and disillusionment with established politics has been on the rise. How do we make sense of these anti-political times?Links'We live in anti-political times' by Elizabeth Humphrys.Earth Matters #1195 was produced by Teishan Ahearne.
Ben is joined by William Bowe and Elizabeth Humphrys to discuss anti-politics and election night - in particular what seats are worth watching and when you should expect results to come in. Thanks to 2SER radio in Sydney for the use of their studio.
Derick Varn continues his conversation withTad Tietze about anti-politics. Tietze blogs at Left Flank, tweets as @Dr_Tad, and has a book coming out from Verso books. From an essay by Tietze and Elizabeth Humphrys: Anti-politics and the Illusions of Neoliberalism We live in anti-political times. After a twentieth century in which Western societies experienced the rise and entrenchment of mass representative institutions, where hundreds of millions of people accepted that politics was the main way to have their social interests advanced, these arrangements have ever more obviously fallen into disrepair, decay and even frank breakdown. Part Two of this conversation is available, in full, for our supporters on patreon

Author and publisher Victor Koman joins me to discuss agorism, the anti-political, anti-state philosophy and strategy developed by Samuel E. Konkin III. Those chapters that exist of Konkin's would-be treatise, Counter-Economics, have just been released for people to read for the very first time. We discuss those chapters and the ideas found in them, and how what Konkin calls the "counter-economy" can challenge the state.
Listen to the debate from the Battle of Ideas 2018. Whatever way we read today’s political disruptions, change is in the air. Mainstream political parties internationally, from Italy to Sweden, are being thrown into disarray by new challengers. Democratic votes, from Brexit to Trump, are seemingly giving two fingers to establishment norms. This turbulent atmosphere is undoubtedly unsettling. It is understandable that we can be tempted to resist change because of the risks associated with it. But can we transform today’s turbulence as an opportunity to shape the future, grasp the moment with hope, be inspired by a period that is resonant with possibilities? Can we create a climate in which people will embrace new experiences and exhibit a willingness to take risks? The West has seen a rising tide of populist and anti-political feeling, resulting in Brexit and Trump. Eliane Glaser scrutinises this new wave of populism, looking at how we got here and where we're going, advocating the need to return to three pillars of political philosophy that have become dirty words: ideology, authority, and the state.
