Read 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22. Are you going to be driving home for Christmas? Or travelling during the season? Many of us travel to spend time with family and friends, or to go on holiday at this time of year. As we do so, let's take God's joy with us and spread it amongst those we meet. Joy travels well. This week, we've seen it travel in the past, as the Psalmist reminded us: Psalm 126:3 NLT Yes, the Lord has done amazing things for us! What joy! Paul's admonition is to be joyful in the present: 1 Thessalonians 5:16 NLT Always be joyful. And we can look forward with joy to what God is planning for our future: Isaiah 61:10 NLT I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God! For he has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness. I am like a bridegroom dressed for his wedding or a bride with her jewels. As we remember the past, experience the present, and anticipate the future, we can do so with boundless joy, knowing that God promises to lavish goodness on us. We look back this Christmas and remember with joy the gift of God's Son, Jesus. We experience, with joy, God's presence with us in the present, and we anticipate with joy Christ's return. Will you ask Jesus to be your joy this season? And will you spread the joy you receive to those around you? THINK IT OVER Think about the following: What brings you the greatest joy? The past, the present, or the future? You can listen to an audio of these devotionals every week. You might be surprised to learn that God is very happy! He is joyous! His name is Jesus. There are ways you can increase YOUR joy by intentionally taking joy seriously.
Habakkuk 3:17–19[17] Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, [18] yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. [19] GOD, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer's; he makes me tread on my high places. To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. (ESV)
The glory of God is God's holiness put on display (that God is better than anyone and anything). We were made to glorify God by reflecting this, but we have failed to do that. There is One, however, who came as the radiance of His glory, an exact imprint (Heb. 1:3). Jesus glorifies God by making good all of His Father's promises and by including all believers in His glory. Our response? Take JOY in Him. Praise. Rejoice. Hope. This message was preached by Pastor Erick Cobb on October 3, 2021.
In this sermon, Will Bruner expound Isaiah 55 where we are given hope of what the world will be like when the Lord sets all things right. There are many pursuits that can distract us from what God has for us; however, we must be careful to listen to God's Words and choose to live according to God's will. For more information, please visit www.OTBChurch.com
Psalm 27:4-14 4 One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. 5 For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock. 6 Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD. 7 Hear my voice when I call, LORD; be merciful to me and answer me. 8 My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, LORD, I will seek. 9 Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, God my Savior. 10 Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me. 11 Teach me your way, LORD; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. 12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations. 13 I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.

Welcome to Monday Motivation - Take JoyAll too often I think these talks highlight some of the really difficult parts of the writing life, but I'm totally guilty of not discussing just how amazing it is to have a gift like storytelling. I often wonder what my life would be like if I hadn't found this passion for storytelling. It kinda feels like the thought of "what would my life be like if I hadn't married my wife, or had kids." It is impossible to imagine because storytelling is fundamental to who I am.And so today's Monday Motivation is a simple, yet profound, invitation to spend a week taking pure joy in your storytelling journey. Wherever you are, what you have or haven't accomplished, the goals you hope to achieve, all of those things fade in the joy of just writing. Just telling interesting stories with fun characters who do sometimes crazy things.A small mental reframe which pays dividends is to change your expectations for this week's writing. I personally need this. Like, I'm not going to expect pages, or quality, or certainly not brilliance. I'm going to expect joy in each minute of my writing time. Can you already feel the internal shift in those words? I certainly can.A few years ago I got the word joy tattooed on my arm inside of a bullseye. I use tattoos a lot to embed messages that I desperately need but oftentimes aren't intuitive. I'm a writer, I am prone to melancholy and folk music, and so this realignment to joy is just so welcome. I cannot wait to write all week from this place. If these are connecting with you as well, I encourage a week, or a day or a whatever and just be joyful in your writing practice. We are the lucky ones who get to tell stories, who get to join in an unfathomable tradition of storytellers throughout history and express ourselves with words.I'm holding onto that today, and I hope you will do.Thank you so much for listening, and I hope you have a JOYFUL week of writingSupport the show (http://www.howwriterswrite.com)

Habakkuk 3:1-19
We have this sense that God wants you to experience joy at a profoundly personal level. He wants to bring joy to your world, your life, to the people you love and care about. This can’t just be about the general “joy” of the season. It has to be felt and experienced on a personal level for it to impact our lives in a lasting way. Otherwise, we’ll pack up all of our goodwill, peace, love, hope, and joy when we put the Christmas stuff back in storage. The message of God becoming a man…the story of the incarnation…Christmas joy…is so real and so powerful…it has the potential to impact us far beyond December. It has the power to change us.In week one, we talked about Waiting in Joy. In week two, we talked about Receiving Joy. This week, we want to talk about Choosing Joy.To “take” something means you forcefully grab it. You make a choice. It’s intentional. You exert the effort. And to “take” something assumes it’s available for the taking. But to take joy? Really? Joy seems so intangible. So subjective. So fleeting. How do you lay your hands on joy? So, how do you Take Joy??
We get pleasure from a delicious meal, a beautiful sunset, great sex, expensive wine and so much more but it's fleeting and based on the moment. Joy, on the other hand, is deep and long lasting. Today, I invite you to grab a glass of water (gotta stay hydrated) and sit for a moment around joy. And when you get it, when that light flickers on in your life, you'll find the road opens up before you and the journey to living your best life now comes clearly into focus. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tonyascottwilliams/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tonyascottwilliams/support

Marriages go through seasons, continually and repeatedly moving through cycles. Spring / Hopeful Characteristics: excitement, joy, hope Communication: Good, about goals, planning and working together Environment: feeling and expressing love, gratitude, optimism, trust Summer / Satisfied Characteristics: content, connected, and cruising Communication: easy, but watch for bad patterns of unresolved conflict Environment: sense of trust, celebrating differences Fall / Unsettled Characteristics: appears good on the outside, but issues are settling in Communication: neglecting conversation and time together, avoiding issues Environment: growing sense of rejection, fear, sadness, or loneliness Winter / Unsatisfied Characteristics: words and actions are cold, bitter or harsh Communication: difficult due to feelings of hurt, anger or disappointment Environment: actions (harsh words, withdrawal, silence) are meant to be hurtful No one has the perfect marriage. The good news is that you can have a better marriage than you do now. Every marriage is ever “in process.” "Marriage is not a lifelong springtime, but we can come back to the optimism, enthusiasm, and joy of spring." Loving each other with intention is the key to returning to the spring season in your marriage. Moving Past and Through the Seasons 1: Deal with Past Failures, Confess, Forgive (Prov 19:11) “Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.” 2: Choose a Thankful Attitude for Your Spouse (1 Cor 1:4) “I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus” 3: Learn to Speak Your Spouse's Love Language (1 Cor 13:5) [Love] “does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful” 4: Develop Your Skills to Listen to Your Spouse’s Words and Heart (Jas 1:19) “Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” 5: Take Joy in Helping Your Spouse Succeed (1 Cor 13:4a) “Love is patient and kind.” "The deep happiness that marriage can bring, then, lies on the far side of sacrificial service in the power of the Spirit, that is, you only discover your own happiness after each of you has put the happiness of your spouse ahead of your own, in a sustained way, in response to what Jesus has done for you . . . It is the joy that comes from giving joy, from loving another person in a costly way." – Timothy Keller, The Meaning of Marriage Moving through seasons is normal AND you do not have to stay stuck in a season. There is hope. There is light. God can breathe new life into marriage.
Patient trust of God's ways and timing come from encountering the living God. Resilient joy in root in the God who bring us Christ.
