To show our appreciation for Financial Awareness Month, we continue our “Thoughtful Money Series”. The purpose of this series is to become people who are more thoughtful around conversions that can increase financial literacy and education in our communities. If we’re going to be better with money, we have to start closing the gap. The statistics regarding money for minorities and women are mind blowing and unless we effect change in our own homes, we will contribute to another poverty stricken generation. We all need to be more thoughtful about who and what we’re investing in. By collectively starting the conversation, we can close the gap in financial education as well as the gap in this wealth generation; and an amazing resource that can help us get there is Goalsetter. Goalsetter is a family saving, financial literacy and smart spending app that makes it easy for the whole family to go cashless and learn how to be money-smart. Goalsetter is Nickelodeon meets Fintech – it combines the best of Fintech companies like Acorns and CashApp with financial education and gaming that appeals to the whole family. As such, Goalsetter is the first money app for the whole family, giving kids - from cradle to graduation - healthy financial habits that will last a lifetime. Today we sit down with Tanya Van Court, the Founder and CEO of Goalsetter. Prior to Nickelodeon, Van Court served as vice president of new media products for ESPN, where she led the launch of ESPN3, and she holds two degrees in engineering from Stanford University, and three degrees in parenting from her children Gabrielle, Hendrix, and Maxwell. Close the Gap Takeaways “To bring kids into a thoughtful money conversation, we first have to forgive ourselves. We cannot expect ourselves to be financial experts out of the gate.” - Tanya Van Court “Society has given us tools that benefit companies, but don’t benefit people.” - Tanya Van Court “There is not a kid in America that needs tutelage sending or spending money.” - Tanya Van Court “If you don’t know better, you don’t do better.” - Tanya Van Court “People think that if you don’t know about money, if you lose money, or if you don’t do right about money then you’re stupid. You’re not stupid, you just weren’t taught.” - Tanya Van Court “How can you serve people when you don’t understand people.” - Tanya Van Court “What we really want to give our children is everything that we never had, but not the consumer things, the confidence things.” - Tanya Van Court “We have to teach our children the lessons that the world is never going to teach them.” - Tanya Van Court “If we don’t teach our children how to retain the wealth that we have created and how to grow and preserve it, they will take 3 steps back.” - Tanya Van Court “The entitlement that comes with this ‘participation ribbon’ generation is definitely going to lead us to take several steps back if we don’t do this together.” - Patrice Washington “If we starve the companies then we starve the communities.” - Tanya Van Court “I’m going to love you like a black mother, educate you like an educational technology company and entertain you like one of the biggest brands in our country.” - Tanya Van Court “If we don’t fund black women lead companies, they can’t bring products to market that uniquely serve black and brown constituents and help them close the wealth gap for the next generation.” - Tanya Van Court “We are in a space where technology drives success.” - Tanya Van Court Redefining Wealth Rapid Wisdom Questions And with that, let’s dig into Tanya’s responses to our Redefining Wealth Rapid Wisdom Questions. Parents and grandparents take note: new ideas for birthdays and holidays. This episode's guest Tanya Van Court is the Founder and CEO of iSow, a platform that enables kids to create profiles and set goals for saving, sharing and spending, then share their goals with friends and family. Todd and Evan talk with Tanya about her platform and how it helps kids save more and how it helps adult give more meaningful and lasting gifts. Learn more about iSow at https://isow.com/.
I love celebrating birthdays and the holidays but no matter how much I try to insist that family and friends DO NOT buy gifts for Evan we still end up with so many toys. People want to give and I love them for it...But what if there was a better way to channel that good will into something more meaningful for your children...? Today's guest is working on a solution. Tanya Van Court recently launched iSow.com, a site that helps our kids and the younger generation understand the true value of money, where young people can choose "goals" instead of goods in 3 key categories: saving towards the future, sharing with those who are less fortunate and spending wisely on things that matter. Then iSow creates a link that you can share with friends and family that are wondering what to gift you for the next occasion. The site is still in its infancy but has received over 1,000 members. More about Tanya... before starting iSow, Tanya served as the Vice President of Partner Marketing at Discovery Education. She also worked at Nickelodeon as the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Preschool and Parenting digital products. She's dedicated her career to the well-being of kids and is a mom, herself. For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Tanya Van Court is a great example of a person that struck out on a dream to become a success. From modest beginnings as the flash of an idea that was born out of a comment that her daughter made, Tanya has been able to grow iSow into a viable business that has a great ethos and a lot of heart. Tanya was able to recognize that our society teaches children terrible financial values. The materialism that we learn young follows us into adulthood and can lead to disastrous financial health for some people. Tanya has created a solution to excess in iSow and the success that iSow has enjoyed so far is evidence that it is a learning tool that really works. What is family? Of course, you can define family any way you like -- as the seismic shift created by gay marriage, a now-minority percentage that 'traditional' nuclear families constitute in this country, and the booming numbers of unmarried mothers. Tanya Van Court has lived her whole life outside of the 'traditional' nuclear family -- starting when her then-39-year-old black single mom of five married a white, single 25-year-old colleague, who then assumed fatherhood of the whole brood, including Tanya. In this episode Tanya recounts her mother's death when the girl was 6, her aunt's adoption of Tanya and her five siblings, the racial stirrings of Oakland, Calif. at the time, and her own, revolutionary, "happy divorce" she enjoys with her kids' dad today. Oh! There's more! This former marketing ex at ESPN, Nickelodeon and Discovery, and now CEO and founder of the amazing saving app for kids, iSow, shares her about the latest chapter of her new family story: Van Court, who lives in Brooklyn where she co-parents her two young kids, has a partner who lives in New Jersey and co-parents his daughter. Want more? THEY HAVE A NEWBORN BABY TOGETHER! Tanya is beyond delightful, raw and vulnerable in sharing her remarkable journey of understanding and living the definition of life, family, mothering, partnership and love on your own terms. Are you like me and hate all kinds of kid crap in your house? Cringe around your kids' birthdays and the holidays? Download iSow, which allows kids to set savings goals, and share them with generous loved ones who can help contribute to paying for camp, buying a special toy, musical instrument, or investing. Teaches the kids personal finance, good saving and budgeting habits, and the real value of money. Yay!
