This week on Finding Certainty, headliner host, Patrick Laing, takes a somewhat different approach to the show's theme and style by focusing on a new/emerging entrepreneur rather than a longer-established business owner or influencer. He discusses the thrills, worries, challenges, and hopes with a long-time Corporate American manager who is making the leap from employee-to-self-employed even as we speak. Robert Mesch has had a long and storied career as an imaging technology sales professional, manager, and trainer. With 30+ years in the industry he's seen the best and the worst of the space while working for some of the largest providers in the world. He's experienced an impressive level of success and received a great deal of recognition, but also dealt with the recurring lack of control and lack of CERTAINTY that come with working for others. He shares with Finding Certainty's listeners why he decided it was time to make the transition to ownership and why he named his firm Integrity's Path LLC. He also addresses why he's made the American Southwest his home for years (and never plans to move). Together, Robert and Patrick, discuss Robert's career, his transition, and Certainty Management's own print/copy cost-reduction service, not to mention, one of Robert's key secrets to consistent, forecastable sales success. He also shares a few of the key points he recently learned at Tony Robbins's Unshakeable Challenge event, lessons and principles that seem ideally, even serendipitously, timed for his new venture. Alan McKnight, chief investment officer at Regions Asset Management, says that fallout from the current global supply-chain crisis will be a worldwide shift to there is going to "near-sourcing," the ability to have suppliers closer to home, which will lead to Corporate American spending money to make it happen, which should benefit industrial companies and energy stocks moving forward. Those sectors plus health care should be leading as the market and economy head into a volatile 2023 that McKnight says may not include a recession if the Federal Reserve gets its moves right. Also on the show, Bankrate.com analyst Sarah Foster returns to the show to discuss how inflation has been hitting some of the biggest holiday expense items hard and how higher costs could be the Grinch to steal Christmas traditions this year, plus we revisit a recent chat all about the financial and banking sectors with David Ellison, portfolio manager for the Hennessy Large-Cap Financial and Hennessy Small-Cap Financial funds.

This week, we talk to Brian Gallagher.  Brian is a former Corporate American turned Global Citizen. After a career in finance, several years as a fitness studio owner, and giving away 99% of my belongings, Brian left the traditional path to see the world and live life on his own terms. Brian created Simple Man Guide, a personal brand dedicated to helping others leave the corporate world behind, simplify their lives, and regain power over their most precious asset - time. Brian is currently living with his girlfriend in Amsterdam, and he is working on his 1:1 coaching program, Take The Leap, which helps others fund their corporate escape, ditch their 9-5 grind, monetize their favorite skills, and live their dream life.We ask Brian:--You left the 9-5 grind a few years ago.  Walk us through that. --When you look back on the 9-5 grind and when you talk about that with your clients, what are a few things that come up as far as things they'd like to never do again?  --What's the danger in, “Well, I'm unhappy at my job HERE, so I'll just get another job doing the same thing somewhere else”? --How has the increased demand for working remotely shifted the way you work with clients?  Do you think working remotely frees some people up from the 9-5 grind, or is your goal more to liberate people from Corporate America?  Like, what do you have against Corporate America?! --One thing you continually stress, which I think is extremely responsible of you, is that if someone wants to escape the 9-5 grind, they need to sit down and REALLY take a look at what they're financially responsible for before just saying, “Fuck it! I'm out!”  What does that process/conversation look like with you? --So you and I are very similar in that neither of us have ever been married or have children.  As someone who struggles with impostor syndrome, I'm wondering how often “You just don't get it…I have a family” comes up in a conversation.--What are some other self-limiting beliefs you hear from your clients and how do you navigate those beliefs with them?--What's the best part about what you do?  Where to next?  Thank you for listening to the Mindful Midlife Crisis!Questions? Today I'm going to be talking about how to determine your strengths and weaknesses. One thing that I noticed while in Corporate American leadership was that people didn't readily nor actively know how to identify their true strengths and weaknesses. It became even more prevalent as I moved into the coaching space and began to work with people on a more personal level. Do you have specific hopes and dreams that you wish to achieve one day, but have no idea how to accomplish them? If that's the case, well, you are not alone! MOST people tend to have dreams and aspirations, but only see the vision of their dream fulfilled, without being able to create a clear pathway to actually achieving it. Many people go through life with dreams of becoming something greater than what they are now, and unfortunately many of those dreams never come true, because people don't know what steps to take to achieve success. Are you a woman who wants to live your life on purpose? Then this podcast is for you! Dear Listeners, May is Michigan Wine Month. Did you know the Michigan Wine Industry accounts for 47,299 jobs, $5.4 Billion in total economic impact, and $1.8 in employee wages?* Wow! Consumers are thirsty for wines grown amongst the Great Lakes.    To celebrate Michigan Wine Month, our gift to you, dear listeners, is an interview with Luke and Faye Pickelman, lifelong Michiganders who left corporate American to pursue their dreams. Luke and Faye purchased land for a vineyard in 2011 and released their first vintage in 2016. The fruits of their labor is Soul Squeeze Cellars, a boutique winery located on Lake Leelanau. Soul Squeeze offers a wide variety of wines and ciders. At their in Northern Michigan, they provide a modern tasting room and education with each sip.    Luke shares, “It was a dream of ours. When the opportunity arose to purchase our first tract of land, we jumped on it. We started farming while we were still working. I was driving back to Lansing every week as a lawyer for the first few years.”    With them being new to the Michigan wine scene, we thought you find value in their story. We “squeezed” as much information as we could into this interview. Listeners will hear about:  The pride Luke and Faye take in educating tasting room guests on the farming process. Why they chose Lake Leelanau as their desired location. The “Soul Squeezing process” to create the brand Soul Squeeze Cellars. Following their dreams to create a new path for their family. Faye shares with Will how she fell in love with the process of winemaking in Italy and attended the University of California, Davis, to further her education. “It's almost a little miracle. The whole process from tending to the vines and the locations of the planting to enjoying that bottle of wine at your dinner time.”    * Michigan Wine Collaborative

Welcome back! In this episode we are continuing the conversation with Cameron-Brooks President and CEO, Chuck Alvarez. In Episode 114, Joel Junker interviewed Chuck as they explored how Cameron-Brooks helped Junior Military Officers (JMOs) move from the military to Corporate American in 2020 (during a global pandemic.) Chuck also looked forward to 2021 and shared his predictions on how things would shape up. In that episode, Chuck defined the word "transition", or at least how we define that word. In the process, he provided some much needed clarity and tangibility to the idea of a JMO transition. In this episode, I asked to Chuck to go deeper on the topic. In doing so, he makes some points in the conversation that I think will really help JMOs in their decision making process regarding a "transition." A major concern that executives in Corporate America consistently face is ensuring that their leadership bench at the Director and Vice President level is full of talent. Like the military, companies must be deliberate and diligent about managing their "supply chain of talent" and executives are constantly looking 5 to 10 years into the future to ensure that leadership bench is robust. This is what Corporate America calls "Succession Planning" - their strategic process by which companies manage and evaluate talent within their ranks. So when we define the word "transition", we are talking about a 3-4 year process where a JMOs goes from marketing themselves as an experienced military leader with business potential to an experienced business professional that comes from the military. Lastly, Chuck sheds light on two potential military transition pitfalls that are out there. First, when making this type of pivot from the military to the world of business, he encourages those wanting to rise in a company to try and not be overly restrictive initially. He compares this idea to staring a company and trying to launch a new product in just one city! Narrowing too early is process can be a major governor on a JMO's future success. Second, because we don't have a Branch Manager, Monitor or Detailer managing our career in business, it's important to make smart + calculated career decisions that allow for future growth. Nothing will stunt a career faster than jumping around to 2, 3, 4 or even more companies when first leaving the military. I hope you enjoy Chuck's insight and depth of knowledge and experience. Stayed tuned to the next episode for part two of my conversation with Chuck where we dive into the idea of the power of comparison. After leaving Corporate American after 15 years in marketing and commercial real estate because it was sucking her Soul!  Like many of us she  had a feeling deep in her stomach that there was more to life than trading my time for money! But that wasn't the only reason. She started having insomnia and actual panic and anxiety about going to work. She kept thinking , “when will this end” and the answer she got was “when you are 72 and you can collect social security”. That thought alone made her so depressed that she knew she had to figure something out, and FAST! My spiritual awakening led me to see, hearing and feeling things I never knew existed and have abilities I never imagined were possible. It was magical but at the same time, I felt lost and confused because there was no one else I could talk to without sounding like a crazy lady. Even my relationship with my husband almost failed because he thought I really was losing my mind. I studied the law of attraction, I coached under some amazing business coaches, I removed myself from pleasing others (mom/husband) and created firm boundaries around my pricing. I learned how to blend business strategy with mindset, and working with Spirit, the quantum field and using my own intuition. That's when everything changed! There is no struggle like trying to keep your eyes off the latest headlines. A billion different paths headed in every direction. A popular vote being the main candidate for the new alignment of the stars. Entering our sixth week of social distancing and the armchair quarterback sideline opinions are brutally using the power of inflection to convince those playing by the rules how wrong it is to take uncertainty and trust its invisible ability. On this podcast I flat out ask why is it we think we're God? Five weeks of this is enough. Everybody wipe the dirt off your knees lets get moving! I just responded to a preacher who had reached out to me. He wanted to know how things are. I'm not shy from speaking the awareness of now. The most uncertain part of this unwritten chapter is in the next few weeks. The armchair quarterbacks have their systems of needing comfort and security and getting back to work is that one and only way. I get it. I lost every job. What we have failed to remember in this time of methods being challenged and personal journeys always under attack by those that know best... Pause. Breathe. You ready? February 2020 the reports showed an amazingly high number of employees on the Corporate American front that hated their jobs and were choosing new careers. They hated their bosses and couldn't handle the hardcore hours of expected workloads. So... its only two months later and its time to get back to the show? If you think the pressure was on you in February 2020 wait until you get back in those four walls and face a company needing to survive. You're gonna hear the same speeches of how you are valuable and you are needed more today than any other time. But you aren't conditioned for that critical adventure yet. You've had six weeks to get your mind body and soul refocused on the main character. You. I honestly can't wait to get back to work. What I don't want to see is the workload that's going to be so heavy for us that its gonna generate another fear in life. You're going to leave. Sure right now, decision makers and company owners are equally involved in this journey. The moment those doors open it's game time. What is your main focus? I didn't ask about your bosses main focus is. I asked you. Your boss is gonna look like Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan. Dodging every bullet and bomb all in the name of winning this war. Do you ever truly go back to those scenes in the movie and study the entire picture. The main focus isn't Tom Hanks surviving but look at the entire process. The people falling next to Tom Hanks. Where is your main focus as we grow forward. Is it about comfort and security, the need to feel like you belong or a wishful thought of damn it lets go back to where you had better control during the social distancing days? What do you want to be when you grow up? How many times were you asked that question? Of course, my answers were everything from a marine biologist, to a dermatologist, to a talk show host. There isn't a yellow brick road leading us down a specific path, sometimes we decide to make a pivot. By definition a pivot is an intentional, step-by-step process that enables you to leave your current job, team, company, or industry and land in a more satisfying place with a promising future. That's just what my guest, Sally Purcell did at 50. Having a long time career between Corporate American and Education, she discovered something special. As she was caring for her aging dad, and his declining health, she found her passion for caregiving. After leaving her Corporate job, Sally started her career in special education in 2006. As a teaching assistant, she worked with students with varying disabilities such as the medically fragile, ADHD, Down syndrome, behavioral disorders and Autism/Asperger syndrome. Her choice to move from the corporate world to education soon became her passion. For 13 years she integrated her work life with her personal life, spending time outside the school day to support her students in their activities. In 2019, dissatisfied with the educational environment, Sally left her job to go back to school to earn her Certified Nursing Assistant license and start a new chapter in her life. She now practices at an Assisted Living Home and is finding an outlet for her care giving passion. This story is inspiring and empowering for women who get stopped in their tracks thinking it's too late, or they're too old to pursue a passion. I look forward to hearing your stories that may include a pivot. Remember, "we haven't peaked yet, we are just getting started."***One of my favorite products that I've used for close to two years is Menopause Miracle - which has been a game changer for me. Born and raised in Jackson, MI Katrina Pope, moved to Atlanta the summer of 1996, started putting her vision of becoming a comedienne together on February 18, 2010, when she woke up to an epiphany. “I want to be a comedian!” She immediately started to follow her dreams. The road to where she is known wasn't easy but she's remained determined, aggressive and humble the entire way.A self-proclaimed “professional student” she has worked various jobs throughout her life, to include being in the Military for 10 years, Paralegal, Esthetician, and Bartender. Never being able to find excitement in Corporate American, coupled with being fired for her “attitude not being conducive to the work environment” she started bartending. Bartending allowed her to develop her alter ego “Kspot”. Her flexible schedule of bartending 3 days a week, allowed Katrina to attend, St. Leo University and finally graduate in June 2009 with a BA in Criminal. She later decided to take the LSAT in hopes of becoming a Criminal Defense Attorney, yet quickly learned a score of 125, was more like her ideal weight that an competitive score to attend law school.Already known for her “Brutally Honest” attitude, Katrina quickly familiarized herself with the stage. Katrina Pope started her comedy career in Montgomery AL, opening up for the nationally respected comedian Doug Williams on April 9, 2010. Despite the microphone malfunctions and colorful language, Katrina, was able to make the crowd laugh and look good while doing it. After her first show, she developed her tagline “I just look like this” after getting several sideways compliments from the crowd on her looks. “I just look like this” let everybody know that even though she's cute and prissy, she's been through some trials in her life and she's able to relate to all women. In less than 6 months, Katrina has performed for a sold out crowd in her hometown of Jackson, MI, along with gracing the stage at Uptown Comedy Club, Laughing Skull, Phat Comedy, Atl House of Comedy, Back Stage with Bruce Bruce, Miami Improv, West Palm Improv, (opening act for comedy veteran Marvin Dixon) Laugh Lounge, in New York, Moca lounge in Harlem, NY, and hosting her own comedy room and New Year Eve's Party at the legendary Justin's Restaurant.
