One of the best things about historical fiction is when authors show parts that we might not know as much about. Listen in as I chat with Tara Johnson about the Irish slaves sent to the Americas and the abolitionists who tried to put a stop to slavery altogether! note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you.  Too few books show the full scope of the ugly slave trade in the 18th and 19th centuries, but Tara Johnson has kicked off an excellent series featuring slavers and abolitionists, slaves and freemen, and the God Whose love should break all chains and set all captives free--physically and spiritually.   To Speak His Name  by Tara Johnson Avalina is a woman trapped in silence. Stolen from her home in Ireland and sold as a slave to a Barbados plantation owner, the trauma of her past has left her mute, wrapped in a prison of loneliness and isolation amid an island of beauty. Though she longs to be free from the cruelty of her overseer, her heart yearns for a greater freedom…something just beyond her grasp. Josiah Holland has been born into a South Carolina slave-holding family but all it takes is one trip to the island of Barbados to open his eyes to the ugly cruelty that abounds beyond the confines of his plantation. With the aid of fiery abolitionist Benjamin McGee, Josiah forges a new future, fighting the very ideals he was once a part of. When Avalina and Josiah's lives entwine, will their spark engulf them in destruction, or ignite a revolution? Learn more about Tara on her WEBSITE and follow her on GoodReads and BookBub. A lot going on in La Crosse this weekend on both ends of the spectrum, as Jean Taylor and Josh Hertel both join to talk about two big events. First (7:15), Taylor breaks down this new two-day party called Big River Rally on Friday and Saturday at the downtown Oktoberfest grounds and beyond. Then Hertel joins (18:50) to talk about Coulee Con, this gaming extravaganza, happening Friday-Sunday at the La Crosse Center.  Began the show, though, with a bit of a recap from the August primary, with the two Republican-written constitutional amendments being voted down, Tara Johnson and Rebecca Cooke winning Democratic primaries for state Assembly and US House. Big River Rally features a pair of concerts — Buckcherry on Friday and Jackyl on Saturday — stunt shows, a bike show, vendors, a veterans breakfast and a pair of rides through the Coulee Region, including one featuring WKTY's Bill Michaels and Jackyl's Jesse James Dupree. For more info and tickets, click here. And, at the La Crosse Center, the 10th annual and possibly last Coulee Con — a tabletop gaming convention that's put on by Hertel, who is also the president of Coulee Gaming Inc. Get tickets for Coulee Con by clicking here. One of the cool aspects that we discussed was how Hertel gets sent never-before-played games, sets up tournaments with them and the winner takes home the game, which may be one of a kind or the next big thing. Hertel says this will be the last Coulee Con — for now. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tara Johnson joins to discuss the housing crisis, funding public schools and Wisconsin's 175-year-old abortion ban, as she runs for state Assembly in the 96th District. Began the show getting a bit of Johnson's experience. The Democrat was the first female president of the La Crosse County Board, where she was a member for 20 years, and was executive director of the United Way in La Crosse, before retiring in 2020.  The first big issues (7:30) Johnson said she's heard from while campaigning was the state's 175-year-old abortion ban law, and how the Legislature, controlled by Republicans, has addressed that. After that, we got into education funding, and how many school districts continuously have to go to referendum to help improve schools, and how the state has never come through on what's supposed to be ⅔ funding for schools. And, before the big break, we also hit on Republicans' refusal for well over a decade now to expand Medicaid in the state and why Johnson sees that as a must. In the second half of the show (19:00) we got into more of Johnson's experience on the county board and how that might transfer to the state Legislature.  We then transitioned (24:00) to the state having a $3.5 billion budget surplus for over 2.5 years now and what the Legislature could do with that extra funding. Lastly, Johnson brought up (28:30) affordable housing and childcare, which kind of rolled into a homelessness conversation and how all three are intertwined.  Johnson is running in a primary election against Steven Campbell of Viroqua. The voting period for that ends Aug. 13. The winner will face Republican Loren Oldenburg, who is the defacto incumbent, but the 96th District will change next year as it inherits the south side of La Crosse and becomes much less rural. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

UW-La Crosse political science professor, Dr. Anthony Chergosky, on La Crosse's Tara Johnson dropping out of US House race, Wisconsin's top Republican wants government-run healthcare, and feds clamping down on those “buckle-up” highway signs.Early in the show (5:35) got into a bit of a rant about winter weather drivers in La Crosse, which led to a story about the feds clamping down on those interstate highway signs that creatively tell you to “buckle up.” Are they useless? Can they better be utilized? After that, talked quick about a $5 million lawsuit against Hershey's (15:30) because it didn't put faces on its pumpkin Reece's Peanut Butter cups, which just seems to be channeling comic Mitch Hedberg's Kit-Kat take. Bottom half of the show (22:00) was a lot of interesting state and local politics, including Wisconsin Assembly Leader Robin Vos not trusting private healthcare — private business — to run medical marijuana dispensaries. It very well could open the door for any Democrat to start campaigning on private health insurance being run the same way — for profit.  We then weaved that into Vos, Wisconsin's top Republican, facing a recall — not from Democrats — but from Republicans. That led to a conversation about the deadline for submitting new maps (32:00). Did the GOP rush in at the last minute with their version, after they argued to the state Supreme Court they didn't have enough time to draw them? Lastly, we talk La Crosse's Johnson dropping out of the US House race (37:00), and how both Republican Derrick Van Orden and his opponents could do a better job at informing the public about what the House is doing. Tara Johnson, candidate for US House of Representatives here in Wisconsin's 3rd District, joined La Crosse Talk PM on Wednesday to discuss, of course, why she's running. We also may have come up with a campaign slogan, plus we talked choice and some local issues to take to DC. A big part of the conversation was about healthcare and, in there, we may have the pitch every candidate should be using on the issue: “You Don't Have To Think About It Healthcare.” Johnson, the first-ever female chair of the La Crosse County Board, told a personal story about how her family was struck with medical emergencies, and how someone in a different health insurance position may not have had the same outcome. We also talked about choice, where she told another story how that's affected her and her family, as overturning Roe v Wade sent Wisconsin back to the 1800s, where a 174-year-old abortion ban law went back into effect until just recently. Before we got into all that, though, we did spend some time on the state of the House right now and how local issues here could and should be tackled in D.C. Along with being the first-ever board chair — doing that nine years — Johnson served on the La Crosse County Board for 20 years. Before that, she was the executive director at the United Way in La Crosse. Johnson is one of three Democrats, so far, running in Wisconsin's 3rd CD, along with Rebecca Cooke and Aaron Nytes.  The seat is currently held by first-term Republican Derrick Van Orden.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
