Hey, Family Brand! It's Melissa here, and today, I have a very special guest on the podcast—Brittany Richman of The American Moms. Brittany's story is inspiring, from working on President Bush's speechwriting team to founding The American Moms blog with her twin sister. She's here to share her insights on teaching our kids about civics, showing up in our communities, and the power we each have to create positive change. If you've ever wondered how to get your family more involved in civic life or felt unsure about where to start, this episode is packed with ideas to help you make a difference, right where you are! Brittany talks about her journey into politics and public service, starting with her job in the White House. Her passion for civic engagement is something she and her sister carry forward today through The American Moms, where they help families raise civically aware kids. Brittany shares how simple activities like watching the news as a family or attending local meetings can create a lasting impact. She believes these small, everyday actions build a foundation of awareness and involvement, showing kids that they, too, have a voice. One of the biggest takeaways Brittany shares is the importance of teaching kids to understand and appreciate differing viewpoints. In today's world, disagreement often feels like division, but Brittany emphasizes that “disagreement and hatred are not the same thing.” She encourages families to foster open conversations, teaching kids to approach others with respect, even when opinions differ. This lesson, Brittany says, helps raise citizens who are engaged, empathetic, and empowered to make a difference. Brittany also talks about the importance of getting involved at the local level. From advocating for better sidewalks to improving school grading systems, she shares real-life examples of how showing up can lead to meaningful change. This isn't about grand gestures—it's about addressing what matters in your own backyard. Brittany reminds us that “sometimes change is as simple as gathering a group of moms, writing letters, or attending a school board meeting.” If you're interested in finding unbiased news or want to know where to start with civic education, Brittany has some fantastic advice. She recommends local news, podcasts like Civics 101, and educational websites that help both kids and parents learn about government and civics without the bias we often see today. By seeking a variety of sources, we can foster an open-minded approach to news and help our kids build a well-rounded understanding of the world. We often get mixed up in our level of analysis, believing that our local situation is the primary cause of the issues we face. In reality, it's the broader market forces or institutions that are creating these problems. This perspective shift encourages us to take a deep look at our circumstances and recognize that challenges we attribute to our immediate environment may actually be rooted in larger systemic dynamics. By understanding the true sources of our difficulties, we can better navigate and address them effectively.

Clare's first MEP in 35 years insists fighting for health, farmers rights, offshore energy development and robust data-protection laws will be his top priorities when he takes his seat in Brussels. Having been an unsuccessful candidate in the Ireland West Constituency in 2009, Scariff Independent TD Michael McNamara took the third seat in Ireland South last night, after amassing over 92,800 votes on the twentieth count. The last MEP from Clare was the late Paddy Lane who was elected to the European Parliament in 1989 and served until June 1994, in what was the then Munster constituency. Before Mr Lane, the late Defence and Environment Minister Sylvester Barrett served as an MEP between June 1984 and June 1989, also in the Munster Constituency. Although a by-election will be required within six months to fill Deputy McNamara's Dáil seat, the Scariff man expects the Government will call a general election for October instead. The first sitting of the new EU Parliament will be July 17th and the Clare TD's next step will be to join a party grouping. MEP Elect Michael McNamara says he will continue to bring local issues to the fore on the European stage. Overnight, the final seats were also decided in Midlands North West - earlier, while Dublin's four MEP seats were wrapped up on Wednesday. Overall, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael ended up with four MEPs, Sinn Féin has two, there are two independents, and one each for Labour and Independent Ireland. Tánaiste Micheál Martin believes voters were put off by the violence and intimidation associated with some protests against migration.

The different factions of the Republican Party were clearly on display this past weekend, at the “Cascade Conference” in Yakima. The conference was hosted by a group called the “Mainstream Republicans of Washington”. Their self-stated mission is to push for the election of more qualified and moderate candidates for public office. Including former congressman and King County Sheriff Dave Reichert, who took the spotlight as keynote speaker. Mainstream Republicans of Washington has endorsed Reichert in the gubernatorial election. That's in opposition to the official state GOP, which tapped former Richland School Board member Semi Bird. It points to an ideological split in the party as it tries to rally to be competitive in a state where Republican support has steadily eroded in recent years. A Clare election candidate believes he's not at a disadvantage despite living in another county and admitting he's not up to speed with local issues. Stonemason, Michael Loughrey from Gort is running for the newly formed "Irish People" party in the Ennistymon electoral area. In August, some current members of the party, including Loughrey caused controversy during a protest against a library book in East Clare when they erected a banner on the 12th century monastic tower at Holy Island, which is a protected structure. Loughrey insists he has what it takes to tackle problems in North Clare though.

Thursday marked final passage in the NC House for Medicaid expansion, leaving only Governor Roy Cooper's signature, and an approved State budget from improving access and affordability of healthcare to 600,000 North Carolinians. The process to get to this point was a long one, filled with enough gridlock and partisan politics to last a lifetime. How could this process better reflected the needs of rural North Carolinians? On this week's Mind Your Business, we discuss the art of consensus building, and how taking conversation to decision-makers could give a fighting chance to advancing other key community issues, like childcare access, affordable housing, infrastructure improvements, and other similar topics. We also give a listen to a timely excerpt from our sister podcast, Reaching Your Peak, where Christopher Chung of EDPNC talks about the value of building consensus, and what to expect in terms of economic development priorities in rural North Carolina in the years to come.Mind your Business is produced weekly by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce. Taiwan's local elections resulted in the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, or DPP, suffering its worst defeat in 36 years, holding on to only 5 out of 22 municipalities, down from 6 in 2018. The main opposition party, Kuomintang, or KMT, rose to victory in the mayoral and county elections, winning 13 of the 21, including the capital Taipei. What were the issues DPP was being punished for and does this show that voters in Taiwan are more pro-China? We speak to Brian Hew, co-founding editor of New Bloom magazine, an online magazine covering politics and youth culture in Taiwan.Image credit: Shutterstock
