Chapter 1 What's Paradise Lust by Brook Wilensky-Lanford"Paradise Lust: Searching for the American Dream in the Indian Ocean" by Brook Wilensky-Lanford is an insightful exploration of the myth of paradise and the pursuit of the American Dream through the lens of mythic narratives associated with the South Pacific. The author embarks on a personal and historical journey, examining the ways this dream has inspired numerous Westerners to seek out idyllic lives in faraway lands. Teeming with historical anecdotes and personal reflections, the book delves into themes of utopia, colonialism, and the ongoing struggle to define what paradise truly means.Wilensky-Lanford reflects on a variety of cultural touchpoints, including travel literature, art, and social movements, with a critical eye. The narrative transcends mere travelogue; it challenges readers to consider the implications of seeking paradise in the face of cultural displacement and fantasy. This thought-provoking work ultimately invites readers to reflect on their hopes and dreams in pursuit of a perfect life, while grounding those dreams in historical realities.Chapter 2 Paradise Lust by Brook Wilensky-Lanford Summary"Paradise Lust: Searching for the Good Life in Hawaii" by Brook Wilensky-Lanford is a compelling exploration of the allure and complexities of life in Hawaii, and how various groups throughout history have grappled with the concept of paradise. The book combines personal narrative with historical research, providing a unique lens through which to view Hawaii's cultural and environmental landscape. Summary: Wilensky-Lanford embarks on a journey to understand Hawaii's reputation as a paradise, a place that has attracted dreamers and seekers from across the globe. The narrative unfolds through the lens of various historical figures, including early missionaries, writers, and contemporary settlers, all of whom have contributed to the island's identity as a utopian space. The author delves into the stark contrasts between the idyllic image of Hawaii and the realities faced by its inhabitants, including issues of colonialism, environmental degradation, and cultural erosion. Through interviews and personal reflections, she paints a portrait of the conflicts between the romanticized vision of paradise and the actual day-to-day struggles of those living there. As Wilensky-Lanford navigates her own experiences in Hawaii, she reflects on her sense of belonging and the juxtaposition of her ideals against the backdrop of a place rich in complicated history. Ultimately, the book serves not only as a meditation on paradise but also as a critique of the human desire for an unattainable sense of perfection, urging readers to consider the costs associated with pursuing an idealized life. Overall, "Paradise Lust" is a thought-provoking examination of the quest for paradise in Hawaii, weaving together personal stories, cultural analysis, and historical insight to question what it truly means to seek a good life.Chapter 3 Paradise Lust AuthorBrook Wilensky-Lanford is an American author and journalist known for her exploration of historical and cultural themes in her writing. We had the pleasure of interviewing Oscar Lang over Zoom video!Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Oscar Lang has released his sophomore album Look Now via Dirty Hit. Deeply personal and sonically elevated, Look Now features some of Oscar's most confessional and inspired songwriting yet. Teeming with emotional intimacy, Look Now feels as if it was lifted directly from the pages of Oscar's personal journal. The 10-track collection features his newest single “Leave Me Alone,” which is both melodically sweet and infinitely relatable in its sentiment that sometimes you just want to be by yourself. A stand-out track on the album, the song describes the universally felt urge to self-isolate after a long night out. Quintessentially Oscar in its pop-fusion sound and piano-driven accompaniment, the confessional track is another example of his expert lyrical storytelling and knack for peeling back the curtain for a peek into his mind.Earlier this year, Oscar provided a powerful introduction to his new musical chapter with his soaring, symphony-soaked lead single “A Song About Me” which recalls past love over a landscape of resounding instrumentals, received airplay on BBC Radio 1, and appeared on major editorial playlists across Spotify and Apple Music. He followed up this momentous opening with the release of subsequent singles “One Foot First,” an introspective, melancholic release of emotion that dives into loss through an empathetic lens, and “Everything Unspoken" which draws strength from Oscar's own experiences with social anxiety and further establishes the album's emotive nature. Exploring darker themes, while still maintaining a relatively light and melodic essence, his most recent single “On God,” haunting in tone and deeply personal, offers a glimpse into Oscar's own journey through grief and how he continues to persevere. With a sound influenced by the piano-driven ballads of icons like Elton John, Paul McCartney and Billy Joel, Look Now calls upon classic Beatles songwriting through the prism of Animal Collective and Mac DeMarco. After a break-up that left him heartbroken, Oscar channeled his emotions into his songwriting as a means of catharsis and therapeutic healing. Using the creative process as his lifeline, Oscar grapples with universal themes of personal loss and longing—drawing from his own experience with a broken heart and the lingering pain of losing his mother as a child. The result is a collection of songs that showcase his masterful honesty as a writer and soulful artistry as a musician.Maintaining a rapid momentum as he continues his takeover of the indie-pop scene, Oscar will be embarking on a headline tour of the UK this August and includes performances at major European festivals including Green Man Festival in Wales and Waves Festival in Vienna.Known for his signature sunshine lo-fi pop and unassuming, sharp songwriting, Oscar has had a momentous rise in recent years following the release of his debut album Chew The Scenery which features stand-out tracks such as “Yeah!,” “21st Century Hobby,” and “Stuck.” The critically lauded release, which quickly added to his over 100 million streams, received major praise from outlets such as SPIN, FADER, The Line Of Best Fit, NME, CLASH, The Guardian, Ones To Watch, The Sunday Times, and more. The stunning debut easily built upon the success of his early viral hits “She Likes Another Boy” and “The Moon Song” and early production work, most notably working on indie pop icon beabadoobee's breakout hit “Coffee.”We want to hear from you! In this episode, we're joined by the one and only Jeff Lowenfels to talk about soil science, the future of soil science, and unconventional growing practices which are far more efficient, sustainable, and practical for indoor growing. What does the future of soil science look like?  If you're not familiar with Jeff, he describes himself as an “reformed lawyer”, who also happens to write the longest running garden column in North America, having never missed a week in 41 years. The combination of garden writing and law earned him the moniker of “America's Dirtiest Lawyer,”. He is the former President of the Garden Writers of America, a GWA Fellow and in 2005 was inducted into the GWA Hall of Fame, the highest honor a garden writer can achieve. Jeff is also the founder of a now national program that started as “Plant a Row for Bean's,” the soup kitchen in Anchorage, and is now “Plant A Row for The Hungry.” The program is active all 50 states and Canada and has resulted in millions pounds of garden produce being donated to feed the hungry every year. As of this recording, Jeff has just released his newest book of the Teaming With Series. You might be familiar with Teaming with Microbes, Teaming with Nutrients, but his newest book, Teaming with Bacteria, sheds an entirely new light on some of the most cutting edge soil science research, and that's what we're here to talk about today.   You can find Jeff on Twitter @GardenerJeff and you can buy his book series at jefflowenfels.com     To support this podcast, join our patreon for early episode access at www.patreon.com/poorprolesalmanac For more information and updates, visit www.poorproles.com and subscribe to our e-mail list.

Being together in a way that makes ourselves available to one another is what we're made for, and is among the most simple and most difficult things we'll ever do. So how do we create the safety and openness in our own way of being that allows us to be deeply connected to and available for others? What does it take to create the kind of relationship with our own bodies that can be a ground of safety for all the parts of us that get afraid and want to run? How can our 'yes' to staying in contact be a real yes, and our 'no' be a real no too, so that when we're with one another we're really with one another? And how can we make encountering one another's depth as ordinary as sitting together with a cup of tea? This week's Turning Towards Life is hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Turning Towards Life, a week-by-week conversation inviting us deeply into our lives, is a live 30 minute conversation hosted by Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn of Thirdspace.  Find us on FaceBook to watch live and join in the lively conversation on this episode. You can find videos of every episode, and more about the project on the Turning Towards Life website, and you can also watch and listen on Instagram, YouTube, and as a podcast on Apple, Google, Amazon Music and Spotify. Here's our source for this week: The Body in Relationship You sit before me,  Body open, Your eyes meet mine.  My deepest wish,  To make contact,  To come to intimately know you. And as I reach for you,  I see that I must reach for me first,  That without me, I can't truly be with you.  First, it has to start here,  Contact with this body I have,  Teeming with senses, feeling and wisdom.  And as I make contact here,  Suddenly I'm confident, settled Ready to be with you.  And stay here,  Because my body is home,  And I can welcome you.  And when we do this for each other,  We dance between the houses,  Living in community.  Always welcome,  At each others' table,  We share tea and life.  And all the depths,  And shallows,  Are made normal just like our tea.  Lizzie Winn Photo by Lizzie Winn

While his expertise spans a wide range of scientific disciplines, the field of Astrobiology is the cornerstone of this origin story. This perspective has far-reaching implications because of its overarching assertion that the Universe is Teeming with Life. The Brilliance and Beauty of Life spans much more deeply and broadly than we could imagine.  Dr Edward J (‘Ted')  Steele PhD (72 yr) is a molecular and cellular immunologist, geneticist and microbiologist, who has worked for many years since the 1970s on describing and outlining the reverse transcriptase-based mechanisms of gene feedback in the development of the immune system -  both the somatic cell and germline evolution (vertebrate species-wide) of the variable gene clusters which  encode antigen binding sites of antibodies and T cell receptors.    These mechanisms underlie all his work since the late 1970s on Lamarckian Gene Feedback Inheritance processes over evolutionary time ( the inheritance of acquired characteristics, particularly in the immune system but also across animal species that have a clearly defined soma-germline Weismann Barrier).    He is a C.Y. O'Connor Foundation Life Fellow (Perth, 2016->) and currently lives and works in Melbourne consulting in cancer research and a number of other areas of biomedical biotech R&D development.    In more recent years (since 2015) Professor Steele has also become an astrobiologist studying, analysing, interpreting data and publishing on Cosmic Biology through experience gained by his years of biomedical research with the acknowledged founder (with Sir Fred Hoyle) of the new scientific discipline of “Astrobiology” Professor N Chandra Wickramasinghe PhD (Cardiff, and University of Buckingham UK) and other colleagues including his collaborator from the 1970s Professor Reginald M Gorczynski PhD, MD ( Toronto Health Network, University of Toronto).    Professor Steele is the author of six books and over 100 scientific research papers.   In 1971-1975 as a young man he did his PhD in the Department of Microbiology at the Medical School of the University of Adelaide purifying and defining the biological and mucosal protective properties of dimeric secretory IgA antibodies - the main molecular antibody player in induced and acquired  immunity at mucosal surfaces such as the mouth, nose , respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract. This is all very relevant now to the manifest failures of the current generation of COVID-19 vaccine roll outs across many countries in the world – this is because the mRNA expression vector “jab-in-the-arm”  vaccines induce preferentially blood-based ‘systemic or parenteral'  immunity to the spike protein and not the crucial protective and more broad based local mucosal immunity- they cannot possibly protect properly against respiratory cold or flu viruses let alone COVID-19.( and they are prone also to real well documented risks of severe adverse events post-vaccination)    Stay Connected with the Dr. Ted Steele:    Recent Interviews:   Origin and Spread COVID-19- Video Interview Dr E.J.
