Lebanese-American Actress Jamie Grey Hyder (True Blood, Graceland, Sugar Plum Twist) talks about voicing Hawkgirl in 'Green Lantern: Beware My Power' premiering at San Diego Comic Con. Hyder plays Thanagarian warrior Hawkgirl in a story focusing on the modern origin of Green Lantern, John Stewart, his struggles with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the survivors guilt. All this while being drawn into an intergalactic battle between Rann and Thanagar, but not all is as it seems. Unlike Stewart, Hawkgirl holds to the notion of dying an honorable death in battle and like Hyder's real-life Phoenician ancestors being proud to defend their nationality. We spoke with Hyder about her role as Hawkgirl in 'Green Lantern: Beware My Power', her work with veterans and the power of humanizing our comic book as well as science fiction characters. 'Green Lantern: Beware My Power' premieres this weekend at San Diego Comic Con and comes to 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and Digital on Tuesday, July 26, 2022. This time of year is known to be the season of light, so why not shine a big ol' spotlight on one of the original seven Justice League members? As the title would suggest, the Good Brothers discuss all things Shayera Hol of Thanagar for her appearances in season one of JL. From her first appearance in "Secret Origins" all the way up through the season one finale "The Savage Time", the hosts highlight the development of what was likely the most surprising inclusion for the DCAU incarnation of the super team. Along the way, they highlight the recurring blossoming relationship between John Stewart and herself, and how the writers successfully gave dimension to a character that initially was only known for her headstrong, warrior persona. After talking about voice actress Maria Canals-Barrera a bit and the character's comic book origins, the Cal and Liam pick their favorite Hawkgirl moments from season one and take a look at the Hawkgirl merchandise produced by various companies, including her mysterious absence from Mattel's series one of action figures and why her DC Collectibles figure was so disappointing to collectors. All of this, much more and a preview of a very special Holiday Bonus Episode being released next week await you on this week's DCAU Review: DCAU Character Spotlight! ¿O no? ¡Averígüelo con nosotros!'Nuff Said! Character Corner - A Podcast on Your favorite Comic Book Characters
%CODE_HAWKMAN% We took a little break but we’re finally back with another Character Corner. We still have to finish up our Peter Parker series but we wanted to take a bit of a detour from Marvel and head over to DC and cover one of the most confusing comic book character histories ever: Hawkman. Now you may be asking yourself “Why Hawkman? Why now?” And that’s a very valid question. Why would we tackle one of the most confusing comic book characters of all time at this point? The answer is simple: Scott Snyder’s Dark Knights: Metal. Snyder wrote an incredible 52 issues of Batman during New 52 and he’s now back with a series that not only answers questions about Batman but also Hawkman, Nth Metal and the rest of the DC Multiverse. While it’s a daunting task to take on Hawkman’s history (one that rarely works out), Snyder definitely has our attention with the first issue of Metal, as well as the preludes Dark Days: The Forge and The Casting. Carter Hall & the Golden Age Hawkman starts off relatively simple. Carter Hall first appears in Flash Comics #1 in 1940 as an archaeologist. After finding and touching an ancient knife that Egyptian priest Hath-Set used to kill his past self, Hall regains his memories of his past life. He realizes he is the reincarnation of Egyptian Prince Khufu. He meets up with Shiera, a woman who reminds him of a woman he saw in his dreams as Khufu who he believes to be Princess Chay-Ara, his long lost love. Using the mysterious metal, Nth Metal, they form harnesses that give them the power of flight. Throughout the years Nth metal has taken on many different qualities, from powering the harnesses the Hawks wear granting them flight to increased strength, regeneration powers and more. Silver Age Space Cop The Silver Age of DC comics brought us new versions of older Golden Age characters. Barry Allen replaces the Golden Age Flash Jay Garrick. Hal Jordan becomes the new Green Lantern replacing Alan Scott. The same happens to Hawkman, except DC gets a bit weird. Instead of making an entire new and easily distinguishable character, Brave and the Bold #34 debuts Katar Hol as the new Hawkman. Katar is an alien law enforcement officer from the planet Thanagar. Even worse, Katar and his wife Shayara (they didn’t even try with the names) take on the names Carter Hall and Shiera Saunders as their human secret identities. Adding even more confusion, Silver Age Carter and Shiera also work as archaeologists in a museum. Thus marking the beginning of the confusing history of Hawkman. See, Crisis On Infinite Earths establishes that both Katar Hol (using the alias Carter Hall) and the original Golden Age Carter Hall exist and operate (even met a few times). So now readers have two different Carter Halls to keep track of. But don’t worry, it gets even worse and more confusing. Hawkworld & Things Get Weird (well…weirder) In 1989, Tim Truman creates a three-issue miniseries called Hawkworld that seemingly retells the origin story of Katar Hol. The mini-series is later turned into an ongoing series written by John Ostrander. It’s a dark, gritty sto ry that gives us the hard-nosed origin of the Thanagarian cop. It’s really good and a recommended read. There’s only one problem: Instead of making this story a simple retelling of Hol’s origin, DC decides that this story was IN canon and happening currently. Problem with that was there was already a Katar Hol running around who was a member of the Justice League International. To fix that, DC claims that the first Katar Hol was actually a deep cover Thanagarian Agent named Fel Andar who married Sharon Parker, an Earth woman who was later mind wiped to believe she was Hawkwoman. Andar is later exposed and after killing Sharon, returns to Thanagar leaving behind their son Charlie to later cause Hawkman & Hawkgirl all kinds of problems (but now we’re getting ahead of ourselves). Now having made a complete and utter mess of Hawkman’s history,

Now having made a complete and utter mess of Hawkman’s history,
Mick is taken to be reconditioned back into Chronos, while Kendra and Carter are turned over to Savage as he returns to 2166. Sara and Snart, who evaded capture, make plans to rescue the team with the help of Gideon. Druce explains to Rip that the Time Masters helped Savage because an alien race from the planet Thanagar will attack Earth in 2175, and only Savage is able to unite the world and stop them. Druce also reveals the Oculus, which the Time Masters used to manipulate Rip's team among various others to facilitate Savage's rise to power, including the murder of Rip's family. Snart and Sara disable the other time ships and rescue the others. The team decides to destroy the Oculus before leaving the Vanishing Point, only to find Druce waiting for them with soldiers. Luckily, having recruited Martin's intermediate past self to help him, Jefferson returns in the jump ship and evens the odds. But the success of Oculus' self-destruct costs the team Snart, who sacrifices himself to keep Mick from taking Palmer's predestined death and taking Druce with him. Mourning the loss of their comrade, the team plans to go after Savage as it learns of Druce's death and decides to make use of the time traveling technology at its disposal.

After last week's episode, we find our team in captivity at the Vanishing Point minus Sara and Snart who managed to hide from the soldiers sent to capture them. While Rory undergoes the induction process again, Druce reveals the Time Masters have been pulling the strings all along. Nothing our team has done this season has been of their own free will. As proof, Druce shows Rip the Occulus which allows the Time Council to manipulate time to the outcome of their choosing. With an invasion from Thanagar imminent, they have chosen Savage to save humanity. When Rip views the Occulus time stream, he witnesses Ray's death as well as all the actions our team has performed over the season thus far. Meanwhile, Sara and Snart debate if they should rescue the team back on the Waverider and with a little help from Gideon, come up with a plan to liberate the Waverider and their friends. After time jumping from the Vanishing Point to the Vanishing Point, Sara and Snart rescue the team and determine a plan to destroy the Occulus Wellspring, the source of the Time Masters' power. But, it's a trap! Our team walks right into the waiting arms of Druce and his cronies. Just when we think all is lost, Jax returns from 2016 and takes out the forces ready to kill our team. Firestorm is reunited and the team rushes off to blow-up the Occulus. Sadly, Snart finally settles the "I will sacrifice myself for the good of the team" battle and stays behind to disengage the fail safe. Our team escapes, including Ray in Rip's pocket, as the Occulus supernovas, killing Snart and Druce. While Rory vows vengeance on Savage to avenge his partner, we learn that Savage cannot rule the world without the aid of the Time Masters pulling the strings. He jumps back in time with Kendra and Carter in tow, leaving us to wonder how this will all end. Join in the discussion by sending feedback to sibercastfan@gmail.com. This week Chris joins Bruce to discuss the confusing history of Hawkman. Whether it's the goldan age archeologist Carter Hall, or the silver age displaced Thanagarian police officer Kator Hol Hawkman is always a savage and interesting character. Unfortunately, due to this mismanagement of his continuity he has been fairly neglected in recent years. Listen to this episode to learn all about this founding member of both the Justice Society and the Justice League. Check out awesome H&V shirts by clicking this link!
