A person getting hurt at the workplace is never funny. But it can be instructional to examine some of the strangest ways people manage to become injured at work. Hear about some “interesting” cases.  A schoolteacher whose leg “fell asleep” while he sat in a classroom falls trying to stand up. He broke his femur. Is he entitled to compensation from his employer?  An Amtrak baggage handler was visiting the restroom when someone tossed a firecracker into the room. Startled, he fell and was injured; is Amtrak responsible? How about a city worker who says he picked up a firecracker he found on the job, and it mysteriously exploded, injuring him?  People get hurt at work, but as these and other cases illustrate, it's not always the responsibility of the employer. (And sometimes, workers do silly things…). Mentioned in this Episode: Tom Robinson's Top 10 Bizarre Workers' Comp Cases For 2022 Steven Silberberg v. Palm Beach County Schools Phillip Durance v. National Railroad Passenger Corp aka Amtrak Dylan Junior v. Illinois Workers' Compensation Commission Jonathan Hollis v. Acoustics, Inc. and Associated General Contractors of MS, Inc. Donald Weed v. It's story time! In this week's episode, Amber is sharing a story time about a situation where she was supposed to be celebrated and was instead undermined and disrespected, and explains how she was able to actively recover from the situation in real time. She explains how this work has taught her to partner with her nervous system and use it for her own desires instead of being at the whims of it. Even though the situation wasn't that pleasant, she was prepared, present, and had the capacity and audacity to approach it in the ways she wanted. A reminder that every case is different. Injuries occur in unusual situations that challenge how we think about Workers' Compensation and how every state and jurisdiction applies the law differently. The “Skiing Chaperone Case,” is about a teacher who accompanies a school ski club as a chaperone. Is she eligible for Workers' Comp if injured while skiing? Is this a work injury, or did her volunteer status exclude her? After all, skiing is fun. The answer may surprise you. A worker on the job outdoors needed to relieve himself. He was standing on a railing over a concrete slab six feet below, unzipped … and he fell and was hurt Unfortunately, he also had an elevated blood-alcohol level and an indication of drug use. So, did the “the personal comfort doctrine” apply, or did intoxication trump his claim? Plus, a law enforcement officer attending a conference partook of a “hospitality” suite, enjoying alcoholic beverages before falling off a balcony to his death; A truck driver who stepped into boiling water when he was awakened in his truck cabin; And an obese woman who got stuck in her workplace cafeteria booth, breaking a bone. These are real cases, and real people were hurt. No injury is funny or subject to ridicule. But these cases illustrate the challenges Workers' Comp attorneys face. Every worker is important and entitled to protections, but many cases are far from clear cut.

After a decade of the stock market going up, up, and up, people are starting to see the end of the run is coming. Well, the wise people are anyway. After all, there are lots of things to be nervous about in our country and our economy. With that naturally comes the question, "well then, what should we be doing to prepare?" In today's episode, host Travis Shelton unpacks this question and explains some of the risks and perceived risks we face. In short, there are two groups of people: 1) those who are invested simply and broadly who shouldn't worry one single bit, and 2) those who think they are smart by buying and selling individual investments.....who should be worried a lot! When this market crashes, many people will get crushed. Ironically, the "smart" ones who think they know what they are doing will likely be the biggest casualties. This week we check in to see how quarantine life is going with each other. We talk about some of the weird things we've done and what's saving us right now. We'd love to hear from you guys! Share with us the weirdest thing you done while sheltering in place. What's saving you right now? Oh, and 2 more episode until the 100th!!! Mentions: Yoga with Adriene Some Good News Rebecca C's Tzatziki Recipe: 1  7”-9” cucumber, cut in half lengthwise 1 1/2 cups Greek yogurt (NOT fat free) 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 T white vinegar Chopped mint and dill, to taste Remove seeds from cucumber and grate on a box grater. Place on a clean, absorbent kitchen towel and sprinkle liberally with salt. Let sit for a few minutes, then squeeze out as much liquid as possible. Place minced garlic into vinegar, letting sit for 10 minutes or so. In a bowl, combine drained cucumbers and Greek yogurt. Strain vinegar into the mixture, discarding the garlic solids. Mix together with herbs, if desired. Let sit in fridge for an hour to let flavors meld, then add salt and additional vinegar as needed. Serve with pita chips, crudités, grilled meats and vegetables, on top of rice... possibilities are endless!

When you think about people getting drunk in their underwear, you tend to think of Joe Exotic and the people on Tiger King, the hot-AF Netflix documentary, but the people who are masters at getting completely sloshed at home are the Finns. Yes, the Finns. They have a word for it and that word is kalsarikännit. That word means pantsdrunk They even have emojis depicted half-dressed emoji people holding a beer or a wine glass that they send each other when they are solo drinking in their undies. And that's what is happening to America in the time of Covid-19. Believe me, this is such a thing that it's a trending Instagram tag and even the Barefoot Contessa is getting involved. Here's the thing. People in northern, isolated, winter-dark, sun-absent climates know all about staying at home. They know about facing the darkness and drinking in their undies. Yes, undies. Not sweatpants. Undies. Part of being pantsdrunk is stripping down. On Harper Collins's website for Miska Rantanen's book about the cultural phenomenon, it states: According to an article by Claudia Alarcon in Forbes, Claudia Alarcon"Pantsdrunk is one of the cornerstones of drinking culture in Finland,” says Partanen (an actual Finnish person she quotes). “The Finns are very reserved people, which is why there are jokes in Finland about how social distancing simply means that we keep doing what we've always been doing: avoiding physical contact and keeping at least a meter distance from others.” When you are undergoing constant stress and anxiety, it increases your risk for both physical and mental health issues. You don't want that. We don't want that for you. So, it's okay to find some joys even as the horrifying happens. Build a fort. Sing in the shower. Read books. Snuggle with puppies. What's this got to do with writing other than the fact that the tradition has been immortalized in a book? It's about letting go, diving into your story and giving your anxiety a giant finger flip. It's about tearing off your clothes and your devices and writing the raw, naked tipsy story without your internal critic or internal editor standing over your shoulder telling you to go get the seltzer water and put your clothes back on. That's when you write cool stories. This time we are in now, this pandemic, this physical isolation? It can divide us or it can make us closer. We can choose to despair in our systemic issues and lack and we should recognize it, but is just as important to notice the moments of humanity, of how people still find ways to create and communicate and love. SHOUT OUT The music we've clipped and shortened in this podcast is awesome and is made available through the Creative Commons License. Here's a link to that and the artist's website. Who is this artist and what is this song? It's “Night Owl” by Broke For Free.“When it comes to happiness rankings, Finland always scores near the top. Many Finnish phenomena set the bar high: the best education system, gender equality, a flourishing welfare state, sisu or bull-headed pluck. Behind all of these accomplishments lies a Finnish ability to stay calm, healthy and content in a riptide of endless tasks and temptations. The ability comes from the practice of "kalsarikanni" translated as pantsdrunk.” More info at Carrie's website. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/carriejonesbooks/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/carriejonesbooks/support

Courtney Sullivan (rec’d by Elizabeth) Tell Me How You Really Feel by Aminah Mae Safi (rec’d by Khadija) The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron (rec’d by Aleks) QUESTIONS 1. Greetings, and thanks in advance for expanding my already out of control TBR list! A friend and I just booked a two-week trip to South Korea for early November (leaving 11/3), and I want to do as much research as possible before I go, because I am SUCH a Hermione. I’m looking for books, fiction or non-fiction, that will provide me with context about the culture, history, food, traditions, and/or landscape of South Korea. I already have Wicked Fox and Pachinko on my list. What else can you recommend that will help me learn as much as I can? I’ve never been anywhere in Asia, and I’m so excited to go. My wheelhouse is pretty broad–I’m a fan of contemporary fiction, sweeping generational sagas, YA, and sci-fi/fantasy (though I’m not so much into high fantasy). For non-fiction I especially love reading memoirs, especially by women and comedians (Bossypants and “Are you Hanging out without Me?” being two of my favorites) and collections of essays. Thanks so much–I love the podcast and I can’t wait to hear your recommendations. -Julia 2. Hi Amanda and Jenn! Over the summer I’ve gotten into a reading kick of books with a certain madcap flair – like everything is bonkers but we’re going with it plotlines. I think Amanda’s recommendation of The Affair of the Mysterious Letter by Alexis Hall is what set me off so I wanted to ask for more please! Other books I’ve read in this vein would be: The Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger, Good Omens by Gaiman/Pratchett, The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, The Hitchhiker’s Guide by Douglas Adams – and I’m noticing a British theme here, which is fine to continue or buck! Thanks in advance. -Kelly 3. Every year for Hanukkah, I send my friend 8 e-books from Thanksgiving until the last day of the holiday. When Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins came out, we both absolutely loved it and read the rest of the books in the series. At the time, we also liked some of the books by Rainbow Rowell. I’ve had trouble finding another whimsical, fun, romantic, but well written series that has the same energy as the Perkins’ books. Any suggestions? Thank you! -Malory 4. I am looking for a book for my mom. She really likes fiction about all kinds of sports in which characters overcome hardships and stereotypes. Which is why she loved the Dairy Queen Trilogy by Catherine Gilbert Murdock. She has now read all three books several times and can’t seem to find anything else quite like it. Can you think of anything along these lines? Thank you! All the best! -Leah 5. I’m a long time listener to the podcast and have got many many recommendations from you both over the years, but I’ve only now come up with my very own personalised request… I’ve recently realised that I read police (and private detective) procedurals as a kind of comfort read/palate cleanser/go to for when I can’t think of anything else to read, or just can’t get into any other books. I’ve read loads of Sarah Paretsky, am obsessed with Tana French and recently really enjoyed the first 2 books in Susie Steiner’s DI Manon Bradshaw series, but I’d really love some recs for this kind of thing that isn’t written by a white woman. I already have IQ by Joe Ides on my radar, have read and loved everything by Attica Locke, and have put the Widows of Malabar Hill on my TBR – do you have any other suggestions for me? Bonus points if it’s a long ass series I can really sink my teeth into and keep going back to when all is lost. I read (and write!) a lot of psychological thrillers so really don’t need any recommendations in that department..it’s police and private eyes I’m after here, I think. -Annie 6. I’m a relatively new Insider, and have been loving your podcast through the past 5 months. Thank you SO much for making my TBR list super-long, and introducing me to so many books I might never have thought to pick up. As a side effect of the Read Harder Challenge, I realized that I love books of essays (who knew?!) in addition to my known-favorites of historical fiction, fantasy, murder mystery, and literary fiction. I just finished reading “Selfish, Shallow and Self-absorbed: 16 Writers on the Decision NOT to have kids”. I had high hopes for this book as a 37 year old veterinarian who has made this decision myself, which tends not to be a popular one with family or peer-group. I was hoping to find my brethren in these essays, but sadly only felt some mild kindred spirits calling from two or three essays. I was wondering if you might be able to help me find a character who speaks to me through a novel? I will say that the “single and driven” female lead intrigues me, but isn’t me. I’m happily married to a man who also doesn’t want children. Also, I do love kids (and truly enjoy my time with my nephews and god-daughter), so kid-haters are also a strong no. Some of my favorite characters thus far have been Kinsey Millhone from Sue Grafton’s alphabet series; Lindsay Boxer from the early part of the Women’s Murder Club series by James Patterson, Claire from the Outlander series, and Jo from Little Women. Thank you in advance! -Jennie 7. I always wondered why I felt no connection to action heroines. Then I read Sabriel and realized that I prefer down-to-earth, sensible protagonists who have a strong sense of duty. Tiffany Aching is the platonic ideal of this. I also recently loved The Bear and the Nightingale. My preferred genres are science fiction and fantasy. I’ve been especially loving “domestic fantasy” lately that takes place around the home, though a good adventure across dangerous lands is always fun too. Thank you! -Julia BOOKS DISCUSSED The Hole by Hye-Young Pyun, translated by Sora Kim-Russell The Birth of Korean Cool by Euny Hong The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman Chilling Effect by Valerie Valdes When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon Heroine Complex series by Sarah Kuhn The Flood Girls by Richard Fifield (rec’d by Kathleen) Check, Please!: Book 1: Hockey, by Ngozi Ukazu Shinju by Laura Joh Rowland Rachel Getty & Esa Khattak (The Unquiet Dead #1) by Ausma Zehanat Khan The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert The Magnificent Spinster by May Sarton Sisters of the Winter Wood by Rena Rossner Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia The Tethered Mage by Melissa Caruso

This episode is brought to you by Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (until Ty tells me where I can find Blue Blood Brewing Company products in my area). In this episode, we talk about the departure of Patrick O’Brien from the Husker football team after he asked for and was granted a release from his scholarship. That really throws the QB picture into chaos as we had him pegged as the season-opening starter. So where does that leave the QB position and players like Tristan Gebbia, Adrian Martinez, and, dare we say, Noah Vedral? Also, plenty of talk this week on the receiving corps, what could be a bright spot for the Husker offense. Stanley Morgan returns and could easily be Nebraska’s first 1,000-yard receiver. But JD Spielman is a returning freshman All-American, and Tyjon Lindsey is a dynamic playmaker and both figure to be key pieces to the Nebraska offensive unit. And we’re trying to get Hoss a girlfriend, gosh darnit! So if you like long walks on the beach, a glass of moscato once a year, dogs, and a fella who can squat over 300 pounds, reach out via the social media access points below. Thanks to Tom and Jim’s Top 5 for recommending Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale. And to the good folks of Nebraska City for their contribution to trees and clean air and…arbor. Enjoy the show! Lee provides some perspective after OU struggles to beat Baylor in Waco. Then Grant joins in to try and make sense of what happened against the Bears. Plus Lee provides detailed breakdowns of those 2 long Baylor touchdown passes that changed the whole game. 3:35 The guys describe the OU-Baylor game in one word 4:50 Grant said weeks ago that Baylor was a trap game for the Sooners. 7:25 Should we be concerned about the OU defense? 9:10 Baylor's QB had a career day 1 week after going 12/34 with 3 picks against Duke. 10:15 Jordan Thomas may have had his worst game as a Sooner on Saturday. 10:50 Maybe Baylor's offense was not as successful in this game as the box score would suggest 11:55 Lee believes this game was changed by 2 big plays given up by the OU secondary. 13:05 That 71-yard TD pass OU allowed in the 1st half actually wasn't that bad of a play by Jordan Thomas. 15:15 On the flip side, that 72-yard TD pass OU allowed in the 3rd quarter was quite a poor play by JT. 18:35 bottom half Big 12 teams have the ability to burn you -- and we saw an example of that Saturday. 19:50 Parnell Motley made some mistakes Saturday, but Baylor clearly tried to avoid him. 21:00 Lee goes over all the times Baylor threw towards Motley. It wasn't much. 23:00 Baylor looked nothing like the Baylor on the film from the first 3 games and the Bears came out with a nice offensive game plan. 25:10 Lee thinks maybe JT just simply played a bad game and he could easily bounce back. 26:35 OU's front 7 played pretty well Saturday and Baylor could not run it at all. 28:10 Should we panic about the OU defense? 30:35 Grant thinks Baker Mayfield played fine and describes OU's offensive game plan against Baylor as "interesting". 32:05 the Sooners offense started about as fast as possible -- and Lee thinks Mayfield played really well Saturday. 33:25 Tip of the cap to Mayfield for taking a shot and completing a nice ball to Mark Andrews (who looks fine) 34:00 Mayfield's arm is clearly fine 35:10 Grant thinks OU could have buried Baylor in the first half if the Sooners would have thrown it more. 36:55 it's impossible to predict the Sooners RB situation and that's not a bad thing. 39:15 we reminisce on that 2008 season when OU's opponents never got called for holding 40:00 The OU offense is fine and this game should not make you think otherwise. 41:00 when OU's offense trailed against Baylor, Sooners turned into a machine 41:45 Was the plan all along to wait until the 4th qtr to play Trey Sermon? 43:30 Erick Wren and Ben Powers flashed on Sermon's first TD run 44:15 Lee was disappointed in Marquise Brown fumbling in the 2nd half 45:20 CeeDee Lamb looked good once again and so did Jeff Badet 47:15 if you didn't watch this game you would think OU and Baylor are pretty even 47:50 was this Baylor game a necessary wake up call for OU? 48:45 for OU to get a wake up call while also getting a road win -- that's nice. And Lee begs the Sooners to watch all the film all throughout the rest of the year. 50:50 the guys briefly touch on the OSU-TCU game #westofeverest #oufootball #oklahomafootball #sooners #soonersfootball #bakermayfield #parnellmotley #baylor #treysermon #abduladams

Character Corner - A Podcast on Your favorite Comic Book Characters

%CODE_HAWKMAN% We took a little break but we’re finally back with another Character Corner. We still have to finish up our Peter Parker series but we wanted to take a bit of a detour from Marvel and head over to DC and cover one of the most confusing comic book character histories ever: Hawkman. Now you may be asking yourself “Why Hawkman? Why now?” And that’s a very valid question. Why would we tackle one of the most confusing comic book characters of all time at this point? The answer is simple: Scott Snyder’s Dark Knights: Metal. Snyder wrote an incredible 52 issues of Batman during New 52 and he’s now back with a series that not only answers questions about Batman but also Hawkman, Nth Metal and the rest of the DC Multiverse. While it’s a daunting task to take on Hawkman’s history (one that rarely works out), Snyder definitely has our attention with the first issue of Metal, as well as the preludes Dark Days: The Forge and The Casting. Carter Hall & the Golden Age Hawkman starts off relatively simple. Carter Hall first appears in Flash Comics #1 in 1940 as an archaeologist. After finding and touching an ancient knife that Egyptian priest Hath-Set used to kill his past self, Hall regains his memories of his past life. He realizes he is the reincarnation of Egyptian Prince Khufu. He meets up with Shiera, a woman who reminds him of a woman he saw in his dreams as Khufu who he believes to be Princess Chay-Ara, his long lost love. Using the mysterious metal, Nth Metal, they form harnesses that give them the power of flight. Throughout the years Nth metal has taken on many different qualities, from powering the harnesses the Hawks wear granting them flight to increased strength, regeneration powers and more. Silver Age Space Cop The Silver Age of DC comics brought us new versions of older Golden Age characters. Barry Allen replaces the Golden Age Flash Jay Garrick. Hal Jordan becomes the new Green Lantern replacing Alan Scott. The same happens to Hawkman, except DC gets a bit weird. Instead of making an entire new and easily distinguishable character, Brave and the Bold #34 debuts Katar Hol as the new Hawkman. Katar is an alien law enforcement officer from the planet Thanagar. Even worse, Katar and his wife Shayara (they didn’t even try with the names) take on the names Carter Hall and Shiera Saunders as their human secret identities. Adding even more confusion, Silver Age Carter and Shiera also work as archaeologists in a museum. Thus marking the beginning of the confusing history of Hawkman. See, Crisis On Infinite Earths establishes that both Katar Hol (using the alias Carter Hall) and the original Golden Age Carter Hall exist and operate (even met a few times). So now readers have two different Carter Halls to keep track of. But don’t worry, it gets even worse and more confusing. Hawkworld & Things Get Weird (well…weirder) In 1989,  Tim Truman creates a three-issue miniseries called Hawkworld that seemingly retells the origin story of Katar Hol. The mini-series is later turned into an ongoing series written by John Ostrander. It’s a dark, gritty sto ry that gives us the hard-nosed origin of the Thanagarian cop. It’s really good and a recommended read. There’s only one problem: Instead of making this story a simple retelling of Hol’s origin, DC decides that this story was IN canon and happening currently. Problem with that was there was already a Katar Hol running around who was a member of the Justice League International. To fix that, DC claims that the first Katar Hol was actually a deep cover Thanagarian Agent named Fel Andar who married Sharon Parker, an Earth woman who was later mind wiped to believe she was Hawkwoman.  Andar is later exposed and after killing Sharon, returns to Thanagar leaving behind their son Charlie to later cause Hawkman & Hawkgirl all kinds of problems (but now we’re getting ahead of ourselves). Now having made a complete and utter mess of Hawkman’s history,
