This time of year is known to be the season of light, so why not shine a big ol' spotlight on one of the original seven Justice League members? As the title would suggest, the Good Brothers discuss all things Shayera Hol of Thanagar for her appearances in season one of JL. From her first appearance in "Secret Origins" all the way up through the season one finale "The Savage Time", the hosts highlight the development of what was likely the most surprising inclusion for the DCAU incarnation of the super team. Along the way, they highlight the recurring blossoming relationship between John Stewart and herself, and how the writers successfully gave dimension to a character that initially was only known for her headstrong, warrior persona. After talking about voice actress Maria Canals-Barrera a bit and the character's comic book origins, the Cal and Liam pick their favorite Hawkgirl moments from season one and take a look at the Hawkgirl merchandise produced by various companies, including her mysterious absence from Mattel's series one of action figures and why her DC Collectibles figure was so disappointing to collectors. All of this, much more and a preview of a very special Holiday Bonus Episode being released next week await you on this week's DCAU Review: DCAU Character Spotlight! A lot can happen in 2 weeks. Julian, and Jeremy, are reunited with Dan after a couple weeks away, and boy howdy is there a lot to discuss. After the obligatory Tenet check-in, the guys dive deep into the layoffs at Warner Brothers. Layoffs that hit particularly hard at DC. Not unexpectedly, the much maligned DC Universe streaming service appears to be getting the axe, however, it was the move to completely gut DC Collectibles and hobble DC Comics that came as the biggest shocker. This all comes only weeks ahead of DC Fan Dome, the comic book companies much hyped digital comic-con. Fortunately it wasn’t all bad news on the DC front as it was revealed that Rocksteady’s new game would revolve around the Suicide Squad as they hunt the Justice League (which is pretty cool if we’re being honest). After that the ToB Crew jumps over to the bleak future of the theatrical experience as news of Mulan coming to Disney+ became a reality (among other downer news bits on that front). Fortunately, some good news came out of the Emmy nomination as Watchmen was (rightfully) nominated for 26 awards. All that and so much more in this week’s (extra long) Tower of Babble Podcast!

Now it's scored a massive win, signing an exclusive multi-year livestreaming partnership with Drake. In the past he has streamed Fortnite, although no word on whether he'll take to Fortnite again), including a series of rap battles in partnership with Ultimate Rap League. The battles will stream live on his Caffeine channel, with the first taking place in Atlanta on February 29th. He'll also be using his channel to give a platform to new artists and creative voices. But having a major name like Drake on board will certainly help to distinguish the platform from the competition, not to mention open up livestreaming to content that until now has largely been dominated by gaming. What is your take on celebrity streaming? Stump YouTube Copies Twitch With New $2 Clap Feature Viewers can now “clap” at their favorite YouTube stars as another way for creators to earn money through the Google-owned video platform. The feature is officially called “viewer applause” on YouTube and rests nest to the Like and Dislike buttons for viewers and can be enabled in a creator's dashboard. However, the feature is in the beta testing phase and only a small number of creators with more than 100,000 subscribers have access to it at this point. Viewers can pay $2 per clap, with a cap of “$500 per day, or $2,000 per week on Super Chats, Super Stickers, and Viewer applause combined,” according to a Google product blog post. It is unclear how that amount was calculated but for creators the 70-30 split with YouTube on SuperChats will be the same for claps. TigheFighter your thoughts on Youtube's monetization model. Twitch streamer Sacriel in hot water after impersonating his wife Popular Twitch streamer Chris 'Sacriel' Ball found himself in hot water after being called out for impersonating his wife during a recent broadcast. Not just any old impression, Sacriel ramped things up by mimicking the sounds of a Murloc from the Warcraft franchise. An often shunned race that makes indecipherable gurgling sounds, Murlocs are arguably the lowest on the food chain in that particular universe and Sacriel's wife was not at all pleased being compared to one. She confronted him during his stream and he played it off as if sounding like a murloc is a good thing. It all seemed like she took it in good fun.VIDEO CUE He followed up with a tweet “Even after getting caught on stream impersonating a Murloc and saying that's how my wife sounds, I still am given a proper English dinner. It only smells like arsenic,” he joked. While its easy to crack jokes while streaming we as streamers got to be careful as there are real life consequences. RedFoxx Ronda Rousey signs exclusive streaming deal with Facebook Gaming Longtime gamer and celebrity fighter Rhonda Rousey has joined Facebook Gaming in an exclusive streaming deal, adding to the platform's growing portfolio of talent. ALLGaming News Sony reportedly battling to keep PlayStation 5 price down Sony is struggling to land on a price for its upcoming PlayStation 5 console, according to a new report by Bloomberg, with component shortages potentially pushing the MSRP beyond that of the PS4. The bill of materials is said to be at around $450 right now, compared to IHS Markit's estimate of $381 for the PS4, which sold for $399 upon its release in 2013. Unless Sony is willing to sell the PS5 at a loss, a $450 build cost would make the new console significantly more expensive than Sony's current $399 PS4 Pro, which is often discounted to as low as $299. IRS backtracks on whether video game currencies are taxable On Wednesday, the IRS quietly changed a provision on its website that said transactions of virtual currency like Fortnite's V-bucks were taxable and may have to be reported on tax returns The provision had been on the IRS's website since at least October, bitcoin, Ether, Roblox (likely referring to Robux from the game Roblox), and V-bucks are listed as specific examples of a “convertible virtual currency.” The IRS defines a convertible virtual currency as one that has an equivalent value to or acts as a substitute for real currency. The IRS's website now only lists bitcoin as an example of a convertible virtual currency. Despite being removed from the IRS's websites, there was some confusion about whether they needed to be reported because the IRS hadn't explicitly exempted them. How do you feel about the potential of having to report in game currencies on your taxes Stump? Exclusive: New 'Batman: The Animated Series' tie-in comic coming to DC in April DC Comics is launching a new six-issue miniseries called Batman: The Adventures Continue in April. Set in the world of the beloved show, the digital-first series is written by the show's producers Paul Dini and Alan Burnett and illustrated by Ty Templeton For many people, the Emmy-award winning Batman: The Animated Series is the definitive adaptation of the Dark Knight. So, the comic will feature many familiar faces from the DC Animated Universe like Superman and Lex Luthor and some that never appeared in that world until now, like Jason Todd. This week: In the distant future, America has become a wasteland, all save one unexpected haven: Gotham City, a forcibly domesticated utopia run by Governor Lex Luthor with the aid of his brutal enforcer, the Bat. Young Kara Gordon has no idea what lies outside Gotham's borders, but she's about to find out! When an act of mercy pits Kara against Luthor's forces and even her own sister, Barbara Gordon, she flees into the "freescape," a desert fought over by motorcycle clubs, chief among them the Gotham City Garage. These tougher-than-tough women--among them unexpected versions of Harley Quinn, Catwoman and more--quickly learn that Kara is more than she appears, even before she demonstrates superpowers that reveal her to be more than human! They may even embrace Kara as one of their own, but only if she lives long enough! DC's greatest heroes and villains are reimagined as bikers in Gotham City Garage Vol. 1, based on the stunning line of DC Collectibles statues! Next Week: Welcome to Neo-Tokyo, built on the ashes of a Tokyo annihilated by a blast of unknown origin that triggered World War III. The lives of two streetwise teenage friends, Tetsuo and Kaneda, change forever when paranormal abilities begin to waken in Tetsuo, making him a target for a shadowy agency that will stop at nothing to prevent another catastrophe like the one that leveled Tokyo. At the core of the agency’s motivation is a raw, all-consuming fear of an unthinkable, monstrous power known only as Akira.Katsuhiro Otomo’s stunning science fiction masterpiece is considered by many to be the finest work of graphic fiction ever produced, and Otomo’s brilliant animated film version is regarded worldwide as a classic.
This Week: Earth Sucks. Steal a Spaceship. Earth sucks. The stars have been blocked out for so long that people have forgotten there was anything else besides the World Government Alliance watching over them. Uma Akkolyte is a girl who shoots first, leaps before she looks, and is desperate for any means to leave her planet behind. And so she does. When Uma jacks an alien spaceship and punches through the stratosphere she sets forth on an adventure with an unlikely crew who are totally not ready for all the good, bad, and weird the universe will throw at them. His real name is Michael; he was taken by Time Masters when he was an orphan on the streets trying to survive Offers self to Pilgrim. Without him, there is no team. On Arrow, Anna was an attorney who worked for Oliver Queen's mother, but in the comics, Jean Loring was Ray Palmer's wife prior to her killing another superhero's wife) Disappearing from History: The visual effects used to represent the man executed by the Time Masters at the start of the episode are the same ones used in last year's finale for The Flash, when Eddie Thawne committed suicide in order to kill his descendant, Eobard/The Reverse Flash “Come with me if you want to live”: Line is from The Terminator. Booster Gold once made a similar remark during his time-travel adventures written by Legends executive producers Geoff Johns Marty McFly: Younger Rory is wearing a red vest/jean jacket outfit reminiscent of Marty McFly's Back to the Future outfit. Arrow bits: “If he ever lost me…” young Sara says of her father. Date of Ray's attack is December 19, 2014, and Arrow was on hiatus at that time Fruit Brute: Fruit Brute is one of the “monster” cereals like Count Chocula and Frankenberry. The fact that Rip has a collection of vintage cereals makes total sense because in the Booster Gold comics, we were told once that Rip has a fridge full of vintage Coca Cola Ma Hunkel: Ma Hunkel's Red Tornado is seen in Rip's time lab Rip Hunter's Mother: In the comics, we never learn the name of Rip's mother, so as to not lock his father, Booster Gold, into a future relationship Michael?: Rip Hunter's father in the comics is Michael Jon Carter, aka Booster Gold, so the name “Michael” might be a nod to his comic book parentage. ARROW NEWS: Where Team Arrow Stands when Season 5 Begins (Date: 16 Aug 2016) IGN: Executive producers Wendy Mericle & Marc Guggenheim preview what's ahead: *Season 5 deals with legacy, it deals with the past. The challenge for Oliver this year is how do you evolve and move forward when the past keeps grabbing at you, trying to pull you back. Oliver: building team with Felicity, Curtis (who is going to become Mr. Terrific), and newcomers Evelyn Sharp and Wild Dog while trying to be mayor. Tries to optimistic, but forces will try to pull him into the darkness. Relationship with Felicity should be closer to what it was during season 1. * Diggle: He is to have his own story in the army trying to get his morality back. * Thea: Going to be Oliver's chief of staff and is good at it. We've also established over the four seasons that we can do flashback stories that don't involve the island narrative” * "We still want to make that part of our storytelling, because we do like them. Reference to Rick Starr: Golden Age space Ranger from DC Star Wars and Star Trek References: Like Sulu or Han Solo (a) From the comments: When Kendra says "tell that to Vash" in response to Ray calling Captain Picard "sexless", she was referring to Vash, the woman Picard met (and got together with) while on vacation in the season three Next Generation episode, "Captain's Holiday". Vash (played by Jennifer Hetrick) appeared again in the TNG episode "Q-pid" and the DS9 episode "Q-Less". That was a pretty obscure reference but a nice one for big fans of TNG. It is time once again for the Knights of Needless Things to assemble and discuss the goings-on at the biggest media event on the planet – San Diego Comic Con! Sadly Reverend Dan Wilson and The Oncoming Josh were unable to join us due to calamitous acts of one form or another. But we sallied forth with Phantom Troublemaker, our lovely co-host Mr. Beau Brown, the Belligerent Monkey, and Sir Ryan of House Schweck. In this roundtable discussion we cover the SDCC reveals from our favorite toy lines – Star Wars, TMNT, DC Collectibles, Marvel Legends, Masters of the Universe Classics, and many more! This one went a little long and we still weren’t able to cover everything. But we did get in a bit of movie and television talk. Tune in now and see what the Needless Things Irregulars had to say about the Comic Con toy scene. “Procrastibate” by LeSexoflex.com “The Toys Go Winding Down” by Primus
