[School of Everything Else 2024] The DC Animated Universe marathon reaches its Avengers phase, as the established animated Batman and Superman from their own Animated Series' which had already crossed over, team up with Wally West's Flash (who had guested on Superman) John Stewart's Green Lantern (as opposed to the Kyle Raynor who guested on Superman) Diana Prince who should absolutely have gotten her own Wonder Woman: The Animated Series, J'onn J'onzz the Martian Manhunter (not to be confused with the unrelated Manhunters from the later Green Lantern: the Animated Series, which takes place in the Young Justice timeline) and Shayera Hol, Hawkgirl (not to be confused with Carter Hall, the unrelated Hawkman) of Thanagaria, the bird-people planet. Comics are weird. The first two seasons, simply called Justice League are an odd fit. It doesn't have an explosive beginning that has all these new personalities playing off each other, and the event of them being revealed and meeting feeling like a special, momentous thing, they're just kind of all there, converging on a bunch of boring aliens to fight. The following episodes are almost across the board two-parters, making it less easy to sit down and just enjoy one. And they are still remarkably coy about getting inside their heads and playing out the drama of being this close to other supremely powerful beings. Making them gods first is always less appealing to me than making them people first. Fortunately, when those first two seasons concluded we moved onto Justice League Unlimited. Self-contained episodes, even stronger animation and music, really making use of a massively expanded roster of seemingly everyone in the DC Universe, and a deft handling of smaller, more personal stories, with grand overarching umbrella plots. We get into some of that on this episode as there is some intersection between the two very different formats, (as well as a discussion of the Batman-Beyond closing episode 'Epilogue') but the grand finale will come in next week's concluding episode to the entire DCEU. Guests: Toby Jungius @TJungius of Through the Wind Door Nama Chibitty @namathenerd (And on the Epilogue, originally recorded on our Batman Begins session) Chris Finik @finmonster09 Kevin Veighey @KevinTimeGeek86 Bradford Yurkiw
The Devils and Rangers line brawl, Vince Carter's Hall of Fame news and the Buffalo Bills trading Stefon Diggs were hot topics on this Sportsline Square-Off. But making the most noise with host Bubba O'Neil was play-by-play announcer Steve Clark, who believes Blue Jays fans should take a chill pill.
Eric Smith and Paul Jones are back with a special edition of Smith & Jones! With the news of Vince Carter's induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, the guys are joined by his former teammate Muggsy Bogues to look back on his time in Toronto. Was he often under appreciated? Did his love of basketball get lost in the shuffle? How impressive was he in practice? Muggsy also offers some thoughts on the current NBA season and how he sees it shaking out. Later on, Sportsnet's Michael Grange stops by to share his thoughts on the Vince Carter's effect, not only on the fanbase, but the organization as a whole. The guys also go over Grange's piece about how Keith Pelly could shape MLSE as he takes over CEO. Director: Jaume Collet-Serra Writers: Adam Sztykiel, Rory Hainnes, Sohrab Noshirvani Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Aldis Hodge, Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Shahi, Noah Centineo, Quintessa Swindell, Bodhi Sabongui Synopsis: Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods-and imprisoned just as quickly-Black Adam is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world. After so many years (like 15), of Dwayne Johnson teasing a Black Adam movie, the movie has finally come out. And it's fine. The bar was extremely low for this film and despite all it's problems, it clears that bar. So there's that. This film can be explained by looking at its strengths being The Rock and its weaknesses are Dwayne Johnson. Here's what that means. For Black Adam to be any type of success it needed to be loud, violent and talk a big game. That's WWE The Rock. And that's what we got in the promotion of this film and even what the film does on screen. It's not interested in making too much sense but rather rocketing you from scene to scene with the promise of "The baddest man alive" doing his best "Bad Superman" impression. Where this film falters is everything else and that's because of Dwayne Johnson. Not because Johnson himself does anything really wrong but rather this seems to be a recurring theme with most films that case him. See, Johnson is such a big personality and can act well enough that for lazy directors and writers, they can just plop him into a movie and let that carry it enough to a popcorn film status. And that's what happens here in Black Adam. Surprisingly this film actually could have been good or even great had the things around Johnson been treated with some kind of care. Aldis Hodge is a great casting for Carter Hall but the film doesn't even try to give him a script that really utilizes his talents. Pierce Brosnan's Dr Fate is turned into if you ordered Doctor Strange on Wish (and he shouldn't have been). It just feels like the whole JSA angle was put into this film to be "bad ass" but not to actually make it work for the story. Throw in terrible song choices for scenes and an overuse of slow motion and what we get here is a mid film that is disappointing because it could have been so much more. Again, the bar was low for Black Adam. It did what it needed to do which was not completely end in disaster. But who knows what the future of DC films is because even if Black Adam wasn't a complete clusterfuck, WB Discovery clearly is. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! Today we talk about Carter Hall and Katar Hol, both of them are Hawkman, and sometimes they're the same person. The Hawkman backstory is full of things such as: reincarnation, aliens, a hawk god, and questionable story choices by the DC creative team. Media specifically mentioned in today's episode: -Excerpt from Flash Comics (1940) #1 -All-Star Comics (1941) -Silver Age Hawkman archive collection -Hawkman (1964) -Justice League of America (1960) #31 -Crisis on Infinite Earths reading order & our episode on it -Hawkworld (1989) -Hawkworld (1989b) -Superman/Batman (2003) Public Enemies -Zero Hour (1994) (& reading order for tie-ins) -Hawkman (2002) -Flashpoint (2011) reading order -The Savage Hawkman (2011) (New 52) -Dark Nights: Metal (2017) -Hawkman (2018) -New Mutants (1983) -The Adventure Zone: Crystal Kingdom -X-Factor (2005) -New Mutants (2003) Thanks to Victoria Watkins for our icon! Carter Hall is done with the Hawk...but the Hawk is not done with him....and something MORE VICIOUS than he can imagine is...well, we're not exactly sure what. This one was weird. Jace breaks down four great DC books. Freedom Fighters #4 finally has Uncle Sam returning with the current team of Freedom Fighters having done enough to restore the spirit of 76 for the people of this version of America. Will Uncle Sam's return be enough to turn the tide of the resistance against the Nazi's? In Shazam #4 we start to discover just how much trouble the Shazam family is in at the hands of King Kid, who has scattered our heroes across the Magiclands. However, help may be on the way from an unexpected ally. In Justice League #21, the imposter Superman stands revealed as the World-Forger explains his deception and the plan he has to save the multiverse. The sacrifices he is asking the League to make may prove more than they are willing to make though. So how it will all play out, and why is a beloved character claiming to have destroyed Superman and siding with the World-Forger in imprisoning more than have the living beings in the multiverse for all time? Have to read on to find out. Finally in the pages of Hawkman #11, we find out that even the combined might of all of Carter Hall's past lives may not be enough to defeat the Deathbringers once and for all. What will it take for Carter Hall to achieve victory and finally let his past be in the past?
Jace and Jay break down some DC books in depth with spoilers. They start with Wonder Twins #2 as it straddles the juggles the genres of humor, satire & all ages superheroes. With so many different thematic goals, can it accomplish any of them? Next up is The Batman Who Laughs: The Grim Knight #1. In writer Scott Snyder's own words, this is what happens when you cross Batman with the Punisher. It's safe to say all criminals better beware, but does his thirst for vengeance go beyond justice? Is this truly a tale of Bruce Wayne? Could this happen? Finally the guys finish up with an issue of the incredible Hawkman series from Robert Venditti. We've finally had a writer makes sense of all the convoluted history and continuity of Hawkman, even Jay who has dismissed Hawkman in the past for exactly those reasons is on board for this series. In this issue Hawkman's ancient past finally catches up with him, but he may have a very unique way of dealing with it. Carter Hall's answer to his problem is literally something no one else in the DC Universe could hope to accomplish. Great stuff!

¿O no? ¡Averígüelo con nosotros!'Nuff Said! We were in the studio today with Nathan Stalvey, Executive Director of the Clarke County Historical Association and President of Berryville Main Street. We talked about a few events the CCHA has planned in 2019, gift memberships to the organization as well as the real estate listing for Carter Hall. He also gave us some insight into the recent fire which resulted in the total loss of the 101 year old Clermont Barn. For more information about the Clarke County Historical Association, visit their website: http://www.clarkehistory.org/ Nathan also told us about a new bakery opening on Main Street in Berryville, talked about the holiday parking meter decorations, the mission of the Berryville Main Street organization as well as the fact they are currently hiring for a new part-time executive director. Character Corner - A Podcast on Your favorite Comic Book Characters
%CODE_HAWKMAN% We took a little break but we’re finally back with another Character Corner. We still have to finish up our Peter Parker series but we wanted to take a bit of a detour from Marvel and head over to DC and cover one of the most confusing comic book character histories ever: Hawkman. Now you may be asking yourself “Why Hawkman? Why now?” And that’s a very valid question. Why would we tackle one of the most confusing comic book characters of all time at this point? The answer is simple: Scott Snyder’s Dark Knights: Metal. Snyder wrote an incredible 52 issues of Batman during New 52 and he’s now back with a series that not only answers questions about Batman but also Hawkman, Nth Metal and the rest of the DC Multiverse. While it’s a daunting task to take on Hawkman’s history (one that rarely works out), Snyder definitely has our attention with the first issue of Metal, as well as the preludes Dark Days: The Forge and The Casting. Carter Hall & the Golden Age Hawkman starts off relatively simple. Carter Hall first appears in Flash Comics #1 in 1940 as an archaeologist. After finding and touching an ancient knife that Egyptian priest Hath-Set used to kill his past self, Hall regains his memories of his past life. He realizes he is the reincarnation of Egyptian Prince Khufu. He meets up with Shiera, a woman who reminds him of a woman he saw in his dreams as Khufu who he believes to be Princess Chay-Ara, his long lost love. Using the mysterious metal, Nth Metal, they form harnesses that give them the power of flight. Throughout the years Nth metal has taken on many different qualities, from powering the harnesses the Hawks wear granting them flight to increased strength, regeneration powers and more. Silver Age Space Cop The Silver Age of DC comics brought us new versions of older Golden Age characters. Barry Allen replaces the Golden Age Flash Jay Garrick. Hal Jordan becomes the new Green Lantern replacing Alan Scott. The same happens to Hawkman, except DC gets a bit weird. Instead of making an entire new and easily distinguishable character, Brave and the Bold #34 debuts Katar Hol as the new Hawkman. Katar is an alien law enforcement officer from the planet Thanagar. Even worse, Katar and his wife Shayara (they didn’t even try with the names) take on the names Carter Hall and Shiera Saunders as their human secret identities. Adding even more confusion, Silver Age Carter and Shiera also work as archaeologists in a museum. Thus marking the beginning of the confusing history of Hawkman. See, Crisis On Infinite Earths establishes that both Katar Hol (using the alias Carter Hall) and the original Golden Age Carter Hall exist and operate (even met a few times). So now readers have two different Carter Halls to keep track of. But don’t worry, it gets even worse and more confusing. Hawkworld & Things Get Weird (well…weirder) In 1989, Tim Truman creates a three-issue miniseries called Hawkworld that seemingly retells the origin story of Katar Hol. The mini-series is later turned into an ongoing series written by John Ostrander. It’s a dark, gritty sto ry that gives us the hard-nosed origin of the Thanagarian cop. It’s really good and a recommended read. There’s only one problem: Instead of making this story a simple retelling of Hol’s origin, DC decides that this story was IN canon and happening currently. Problem with that was there was already a Katar Hol running around who was a member of the Justice League International. To fix that, DC claims that the first Katar Hol was actually a deep cover Thanagarian Agent named Fel Andar who married Sharon Parker, an Earth woman who was later mind wiped to believe she was Hawkwoman. Andar is later exposed and after killing Sharon, returns to Thanagar leaving behind their son Charlie to later cause Hawkman & Hawkgirl all kinds of problems (but now we’re getting ahead of ourselves). Now having made a complete and utter mess of Hawkman’s history,

We're Arrow, we deal with Star City, and I feel like we'll be better off focusing on that.” Link: http://comicbook.com/2016/05/25/stephen-amell-addresses-whether-flash-finale-affects-arrow-seaso/ GREEN ARROW COMICS & TOY NEWS Green Arrow, Speedy (x2) and Zoom Funkos announced (Date: 24 May 2016) Our latest additions to Team Arrow are coming this summer! Central City and Star City are lucky to have the "Legends of Today". Because they're going to need them when Vandal Savage arrives in town. He's hunting for Hawkman and Hawkgirl, who are really Carter Hall and Kendra Saunders. Yes, Cisco's girlfriend has been reincarnated for the last several hundred years and was an Egyptian Priestess. Knowing they need help, Barry goes to Green Arrow for help. Meanwhile Caitlin and Wells search for a drug that may make Barry go faster than ever, but Jay Garrick is not happy about it. Jay and Josh crossover on this week's Scarlet Velocity: A Flash Podcast!
Vandal Savage arrives in Central City looking to kill Priestess Shayera, who turns out to be Kendra, though she is not aware of it at first. Barry goes to Star City and enlists the help of Oliver and his team to protect Kendra until they can stop Savage. The team is visited by Malcolm Merlyn who informs them that Savage is an immortal who cannot be stopped. Later, Kendra is kidnapped by a winged man, but is rescued by Barry and Oliver who capture her captor. The man is Carter Hall, who tells them he was Prince Khufu in ancient Egypt and that he and Kendra are soulmates who have been connected for 4,000 years. The pair are destined to die, be reborn, and find each other in each lifetime. Carter also reveals that Vandal has killed them the last 206 lifetimes, each time growing stronger. Vandal locates the Staff of Horus, a weapon capable of killing Carter and Kendra, in Central City. After Kendra unlocks her abilities, the team decides to regroup in Central City to take down Vandal for good. Meanwhile, Caitlin and Harrison create a serum that will increase Barry's speed temporarily so that he can defeat Zoom.

mmortal Vandal Savage searches for Kendra Saunders and Carter Hall, two metahumans who have existed for 4000 years, currently being hidden by Oliver, Barry, and their respective teams. Malcolm orchestrates a meeting between Savage, Barry, and Oliver. Savage demands they turn over Kendra and Carter, or he will destroy both Central City and Star City with the Staff of Horus. They devise a plan to deliver the pair as a ruse to get close enough to destroy the staff. The plan fails; Kendra and Carter are killed and Savage uses the staff to destroy everyone else in the city. Barry escapes and runs fast enough to go back in time to the point of the original negotiation with Savage. Barry informs Oliver of his time travel, so they change their approach to their plan. They deliver Kendra and Carter again, but with everyone's help Barry is able to steal the staff. He and Oliver use it on Savage, destroying his body. Afterward, Kendra and Carter decide to use their powers to help others in another city. Meanwhile, Oliver learns he has a son and decides to develop a relationship with him, without telling Felicity. Malcolm collects Savage's ashes.

This week Chris joins Bruce to discuss the confusing history of Hawkman. Whether it's the goldan age archeologist Carter Hall, or the silver age displaced Thanagarian police officer Kator Hol Hawkman is always a savage and interesting character. Unfortunately, due to this mismanagement of his continuity he has been fairly neglected in recent years. Listen to this episode to learn all about this founding member of both the Justice Society and the Justice League. Check out awesome H&V shirts by clicking this link!
