Luke Storey is the host of the highly popular The Life Stylist Podcast. He is also a writer and meditation/metaphysics teacher whose passion revolves around the topics of health, addiction, recovery and spirituality. Today Luke is a thought leader in the health and wellness space. But this wasn't always the case. His history involves not only healing and recovery but also tremendous pain, trauma and addiction. His crippling addictions to multiple drugs including heroin and crack led him to living in a transient apartment building in Los Angeles self medicating with alcohol to handle the opiate withdrawal. It was also here that he decided to ask for help and change his life. Even though this moment was over 24 years ago and his life is dramatically different today, he still remembers those dark times vividly. Luke began using drugs when he was 8 or 9 years old as a way to escape from an unstable and abusive childhood. With hopes of being a famous rockstar, Luke found himself in Hollywood in the drug fueled music scene. His addictions and the progression of his self hatred eventually caught up with him leading him to the rock bottom moment I described earlier. One phone call led to Luke going to treatment and turning his life around. His redemption story has been driven by health, wellness, spirituality and courage. This along with Luke's desire for self discovery and hunger for learning has led him to where he is today. Our conversation today unpacks Luke's healing journey. We talk about why he used, how he made it out and the things he has struggled with in his recovery. He opens up about his experience with plant medicine and why it has been so helpful for him despite its controversial status in the recovery community. Host Brad Kearns welcomes former pro soccer player turned extreme endurance athlete turned mental training coach Luke Tyburski to talk about his remarkable journey in pursuit of the limits of human endurance performance and the profound ups and downs and life-altering lessons Luke has experienced along the way. After playing soccer at a high level in Australia and the USA, Luke plunged headlong into ultraendurance, with his first-ever running race the epic Marathon des Sables--a legendary six-day slog through the sandy Sahara Desert covering 155 miles over six days. Luke also ran 40 miles from Mt Everest base camp into Nepal despite an intestinal ailment that prevented him from eating or drinking anything for four days prior. He created his own 12-day "Ultimate Triathlon"," swimming the Gibraltar Strait (Spain to Morocco) and pedaling and running along the Mediterranean for 2,000 kilometers total. Check out the Amazon Prime documentary "The Ultimate Triathlon." Alas, these extreme efforts (and the grueling PR and logistics efforts behind the scenes) destroyed Luke's physical health and exacerbated his clinical depression. This forced him to reckon with his purpose and recalibrate on a journey of healing. Today Luke is a mental training coach for aspiring peak performances. He coaches and lectures about how to push through perceived barriers with the force of mind, while at the same time maintaining a commitment to leading a healthy, balanced life. His autobiography is called Chasing Extreme.
What is up SharkNation! Today Luke and Mark chat to one of Ireland's most successful arts of the past 2 decades - Eoin O'Connor (https://eoinoconnor.com), Artist/entrepreneur. You are probably familiar with Eoin's work if you are living in Ireland as his paintings have been licensed by some of Ireland's most important retail chains. Luke and Mark chat to Eoin about his rise in the Irish art world and how he always had sustainability in mind when it came to earning a living through his art. This should be required listening for anyone serious about turning 'pro' as an Artist as it lays out the steps taken for Eoin's success, as well as a repeatable model other aspiring artists can follow. Key takeaways: 1. Start out to be a professional. Eoin stated to sell his work as early as possible, going 'door to door' to retail outlets to get noticed. 2. Think distribution. Where can your work we sold most effectively? In Eoin's case, this was national retail chains in Ireland. 3. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Eoin describes setting up for the first time at the Art showcase in the RDS and feeling nervous when he seen the other exhibitors. After selling out all of his paintings, he grew in confidence. 4. Scale up. Eoin mentions his studio - his gallery and his business development relationships with national retails in Ireland. He mentions his hired staff that help him deliver on a huge amount of daily orders. 5. Get online. Selling direct to consumer cuts out the middleman and allows you to bank a bigger margin. Eoin leverages Shopify and Facebook ads to reach is international audience and manages orders through his full time team. What is Up SharkNation! Today Luke and Mark sit down with Chris McGale, Author of "Million Dollar Irishman", to chat about his amazing life story, from orphan and boxing champion to star financial player in Merrill Lynch. Biggest takeaways from this episode: 1. It doesn't matter where you start in life or the hand you are dealt, a mixture of determination and luck will often determine where you end up. 2. Work in an industry that has tremendous upside. Chris says financial services is still a great industry to earn big money. 3. Gamble if you have an information edge, if you know more about horses than anyone else but if you don't back yourself, the knowledge is useless. 4. Take action, don't just read about a subject. Chris got his first job in investment banking because he was trading shares before it was poplar, the bosses in UIB were surprised Chris had real experience before he even started. 5. Look for an "angle". Chris built his book of clients in London from Ireland, and this proved to be a real advantage. 6. Aim for big wins, "I wouldn't pick up the phone for less than $1,000,000" was something Chris talks about in his book. Don't waste your time chasing small outcomes. Every day counts. Chris' book is out now, here is a link to the audio version: https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/The-Million-Dollar-Irishman-Audiobook/B08YFGVNJG?qid=1615797062&sr=1-1&ref=a_search_c3_lProduct_1_1&pf_rd_p=c6e316b8-14da-418d-8f91-b3cad83c5183&pf_rd_r=TST421SX23K5HSV2SKKF If you would like to learn more about Chris you can read more about him here:https://www.milliondollaririshman.com/ For feedback:Luke@shark.ie
Subscribe To Our Weekly Email INTRODUCING LUKE MILLAY: In spite of growing up on a farm, Luke Millay did not join his high school's FFA chapter until his sophomore year. During Luke's freshman year he was sure that he was going to be an engineer in the future, and he didn't see a reason to join. However, towards the end of the year, he was more exposed to the things going on in his chapter, and he decided to give it a try. That was all it took for Luke. Today he is serving as his chapter's president as well as his region's. He has his eyes on the next level as well. And, during this time he took the cowherd that he had been growing on his family's farm and turned it into a great, direct marketed, livestock business. At the time that we recorded this interview, Luke had already established "Millay Meats". He had done this by being gifted a cow/calf pair and a heifer when he was younger and always retaining heifers to grow his herd even more. As he got involved in the FFA, needed supervised agriculture experience, and became more sophisticated he developed this business. He credits reinvesting his profits right back into the business for his success. Today Luke has 20 cows giving him calves every year. He is keeping those calves over the winter after weaning them, and then he is finishing him on his farm. He is direct marketing beef to people in Louisville, Kentucky, and in Clarksville, Indiana. He also started doing the exact same business model with pigs. Currently, he has over 50 pigs on the ground that will be finished and direct marketed. Luke is looking forward to college next year, but he wants to keep this business going. So, true to form he is reinvesting his profits into the business. He is purchasing larger feeders for the pigs and automatic waterers so that if he is gone for a period of a couple of days due to being at college the animals are still taken care of. The FFA is absolutely an incubator for future entrepreneurs and great ideas. Luke is the proof! In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants. With your donations, more students can get this head start - pay it forward. REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA: Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world. FFA is providing the needed education, training, and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and ensure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food. Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation. The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth. Farmers, ranchers, and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store: “The future of American agriculture depends on the involvement and investment in America’s youth, In order to prepare for the population of tomorrow, we need to encourage America’s youth today, and show that careers in agriculture are profitable, rewarding, and vital.”. Podcast A Vet: Stories, Support & Community From Leaders In The Veterinary Field
A self-proclaimed ‘dude with a truck’, Dr. Luke Bass takes his passion for horses and love of helping people and animals everywhere he goes. After admittedly spending more time at the party than the library in his first years of schooling, Luke learned from his mistakes and pulled up his bootstraps to pave his way to an impressive resume and thriving career in the equine field. Nowadays, he spends his time training equine veterinary students in the field and has a seat on the CSU admission board, among many other hobbies and projects. Today Luke is sharing what can set you apart from the crowd in applications, why it's not always about the grades, and why you should be making self-care a priority. Everything from gangsta rap, to acknowledging your own self-flaws, and how to communicate what you are worth, is on the panel. Prepare yourself for a no holds barred episode as Luke cuts the curtain and gets real about how to succeed in veterinary medicine and in life. Do you share a similar equine passion? Inspired by Lukes approach to problem-solving? Let us know your thoughts on today's discussion in the comments on the episode page! In This Episode How the rodeo can prepare you to become a veterinarian Thriving off the mental challenge of multitasking Keeping your options open to find your passion Common business questions asked by veterinary students in training A look at the options out there for an equine general practitioner Quotes “It's one of those things that like throughout my life I’ve realized, you don't have time to think about things, you just have to react. And that's how it is with veterinary medicine. Sometimes in an emergency, you can’t think and go look up a dose of steroids or whatever the case, you just have to know and go. And I think that is some of the thrill of the fun of it all.” (17:11) “I think people who are listening who are in veterinary school, just enjoy the ride, have fun. Don't worry so much about every single test, there is more to it.” (35:33) “I don't think you know what your passion is until you have explored everything else. And you try it, and you see what really gets you.” (41:19) “If you want a key to our rotation its preparation and teamwork. And the rest will take care of itself.
