The Big Idea, The Big Takeaway & The Big Action. This is part four of my series on Boundaries, and this is my second series on boundaries in two years. Because it's such a struggle for me, and according to the research, it is for you too. We don't do boundaries because it rubs against our desire to serve and put other people first. Which is great. It really is. And the culmination of this series and concept of boundaries is, your heart is in the right place. Mine too. But our methodology is backwards. We're doing it wrong. Good intent. Glorious intent. But ineffective execution. So sit with me a moment while I discuss three aspects of what I see as The Big Idea, The Big Takeaway & The Big Action regarding boundaries. Which is the new title of all my part four episodes in these series. If I don't help you, and me, come to a big idea, a big takeaway, and a big action, then I'm not doing my job. This is part one on a series about boundaries. I've spent most of my life with zero boundaries, thinking I was doing the world and everyone in it a favor. This is part four and my wrap up on this series on Emotional Intelligence. It's rocked my world because I, like so many others, considered myself fairly emotionally intelligent because I can read other people fairly well, sense their emotions, and perform. Think of “How To Win Friends & Influence People.” A great and valuable skill for getting along with people at a face value level. But in long term relationships with ourselves and others, this skill doesn't get us far and we find ourselves in hard places. I know this well, as it's my story. My expert for this series was Scott Allender, author of, The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success, then I also brought on Ian Morgan Cron, author of The Story Of You. From my conversations I found seven key highlights that stood out to me on how to become emotionally intelligent. How To Interrupt The Loop of Your Natural Self Unawareness. This is part three in our series on Emotional Intelligence. A primary point is the foundation of emotional intelligence is not being in tune with others emotions, but your own. My muse has been Scott Allender, author of book is The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success and host of the Evolving Leader podcast. In this show I brought on a mentor of Scott's who introduced us, Ian Morgan Cron. Ian is a renowned executive coach and Enneagram expert, and just a guy with radical insightful into the human psyche. He is his own guinea pig for self-awareness and we go down the rabbit hole of discussing the loop of self UNawareness we all fall into, every day, him too. He's just gotten really good at pulling himself out interrupt the loop and bring himself back to the present, which is again, a precept of emotional intelligence. Upon our conclusion he exclamed, “Holy moly, we really covered a lot of ground.” I encourage you to listen to my series with Ian, and check out his latest book, The Story Of You and his top ranked podcast, Typology.  A note, Ian recently uprooted and moved from his stylish home in Tennessee, to the middle of Mexico. Just to shake things up. He spoke with me from his new home where you'll hear cars driving by on the cobblestone streets. In this episode, I'm back with emotional intelligence expert, Scott Allender, to walk through the seven key areas of life and what drives him. As you can expect, much of his drive, values, and habits come back to his quest for emotional intelligence. Spiritually he discusses his tendency to want to control the circumstances of life and his self-deception around the idea that without him things won't get done or get done right. Relationally he really wants deep connection and struggles greatly if he doesn't feel he has them. Regarding money he gets into three types of survival relating to enneagram types; self preservation, social instinct, and sexual, and how we must create balance within your natural instincts. This and more coming up. Scott's book is The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success, and you can tune into him at the Evolving Leader podcast. Scott Allender #1 | Emotional Intelligence & How To Succeed By Becoming Radically Self-Aware

The Ziglar Show

Our world applauds people with a high IQ. And yet someone having a high IQ has zero value to me personally. It may have no value for that person or anyone. It merely says they have the possibility of capacity. It doesn't mean they can or will do anything worthwhile with it, and even if they are brilliant and figure out how to live on Mars, they may be miserable and make everyone else miserable. So what is a better measuring stick for overall potential than IQ? I submit to you it is EQ. Emotional quotient. Or emotional intelligence. My guest today is an expert and cites that emotional intelligence as the single biggest predictor of our personal and professional success. Scott Allender is an expert in global leadership and organizational development. Along with co-hosting The Evolving Leader podcast, he regularly teaches Enneagram workshops and conducts typing interviews and emotional intelligence assessments for individuals and teams who seek to become more radically self-aware and cognizant of the impact they have on the world. His new book is titled, The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success. Let me candidly offer to you that my inspiration for this show is my own journey of becoming more…much more…emotionally intelligent. In the past I thought I was, as most emotionally unintelligent people believe. I let some things I was good at, like controlling my emotional expression and my social awareness trick me into thinking I was emotionally intelligent. And the truth that finally reared its ugly head was that I was very emotionally unintelligent. Join me as we change some paradigms and give some hope to what you can become. Everyone has heard of “the placebo effect” and it's usually thought of negatively. We don't want mind games to fix us, we want a literal ingredient or treatment. But here is the deal, your attitude and expectations can cause a placebo to heal you, or cause a literally beneficial treatment to fail you. What you expect has a dramatic effect on your reality. That's not conjecture, it's clinical. Do you expect your exercise to enhance your health? Do you expect your nutritional supplements to enhance your health? Do you expect your efforts to eat healthy to enhance your health? The bigger issue is your awareness of how you feel and what you expect from all your efforts. If you have doubt or bitterness in regards to any of your efforts you are likely sabotaging them. But you'll be incredibly well served to increase your positive expectations of improvement. I'm joined of course by Randy James, Medical Doctor, Functional Medicine and owner of truelifemedicine.com, and you're about to hear how he and I have great faith that our expectations are incredibly powerful placebos in our overall levels of health and wellness. Talking with Hala about her trajectory of trying and trying different things on the way to what worked, for her overall goal, has been eye opening. When we understand our goal is bigger than any one role or face-value achievement, it takes the pressure off and greatly broadens the different methods we can…try. And if one method doesn't work, it's ok. We know the bigger, greater goal, and can attempt it through another means and method and quite literally make failure impossible. The previous two episodes have featured Hala Taha, host of the top ranked business podcast, Young and Profiting and founder and CEO of YAP Media, a business podcast network with an award-winning social media and podcast marketing agency for top podcasters, celebrities and CEOs. Hala is a rockstar at trying and failing until she figures out what works. Then succeeding. In this episode I brought on a fellow rock star of the art of trying. Broadway and movie star, Renée Marino who you can see as the lead female role in Clint Eastwood's movie, Jersey Boys. Renée is a frequent co-host with me because she's an expert in personal development and a master communicator…her book is called, “Becoming A Master Communicator”. As an actress, Renée Marino's job was trying and failing. You do audition after audition and get told no, until you get told yes. And it's only one “Yes!” to a movie like Jersey Boys and boom, you've made it to the big screen. Renée brought us to looking at whatever we do and go after, any achievement, there is something deeper we are trying to fulfill that gives us space to try and fail or quit many things, on the way to what works, for the ultimate goal we are striving for. If her only goal was to be the lead in one show or movie, that is narrow and limiting. If her goal was to perform, and bigger to entertain, and bigger to communicate, and at the core to communicate, she can do that in so many ways. You'll gain some incredibly liberating perspectives in this episode. The Self Helpful podcast is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping coaches. I'm back with Hala Taha in my series on the art of trying. This is part two, my “What Drives You” episode and I walk through the key areas of life and what drives Hala. Before even diving into specifics like spirituality, relationships, and health & wellness, we simply talk about Hala's overall drive, as she shared in the previous episode how her initial drive was fueled by her father who immigrated to the US, and an expectation to become a doctor like the rest of her siblings. This is where she shared her commitment to consistently define her values so they would see her through in challenging times when you can't think logically. This was significant to me and we dug in deeper to this. We then start off with spirituality and get on the topic of how we are all brainwashed in our upbringing and need to re-brainwash ourselves toward what we truly…value. Hala Taha #1 | Master The Arts Of Trying & Failing In Order To Succeed

The Ziglar Show

This kicks off a 4-part series where my primary muse is…the art of trying. In the personal development world we give a lot of pithy lipservice to trying, quitting and failure…I could add rejection as well. But as a culture, even amongst aspiring people like us, I feel we often fail to grasp a healthy and productive perspective on these concepts. My guest expert on the topic is Hala Taha. Hala is host of the Young and Profiting (YAP) Podcast, frequently ranked as a #1 Business and Entrepreneurship podcast across all apps. Hala is also the founder and CEO of YAP Media, a business podcast network with an award-winning social media and podcast marketing agency for top podcasters, celebrities and CEOs. I met Hala at a podcasting convention and discovered she has quite a story. Her pedigree of success runs parallel to an impressive rap sheet of failures. Things she's tried that didn't work out. Things she quit until she found what worked. Overall you see a committment to succeed that kept her persevering until she did just that. Found what worked. I invited her onto the show to help us find more willingness and comfort in trying things. And try. And try different methods until we find what works to achieve the overall goal of success…in whatever way success looks like to you. We also ended with a brief masterclass on branding you won't want to miss. Find Hala on your podcast app at Young and Profiting, and I encourage you to whether you consider yourself young or not. She's recently had Lewis Howes and Seth Godin on. The Self Helpful podcast is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping coaches. The big question is…how much of an impact do they have on your health? We are not here to discount the role of genetics, and yet the goal is to take as much agency as possible. The goal is to give you hope that you are not a victim to your genetics. So let's discuss wow much of a role they play in your health and wellness and what can you do to compensate for and negate them? I'm of course joined by my Peak Wellness co host, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert, who walks with patients every day as they pursue their best wellness amongst all varieties of genetic challenges. Today I bring in a long time devotee of Dandapani's who has been studying his work and teaching on focus for many years. My brother, Jared Angaza. We kick off discussing Dandapani's statement that “most people surrender their decision-making process to their environment. And it takes discipline to take ownership. This led into an organic discussion on discipline and how we as a culture misperceive what discipline really is. If you feel you are undisciplined, overall or in certain areas, I invite you to listen in, as the conversation brought some revelations to me. We continues on then, digging further into how to have more focus in our lives, and for disclosure, Jared and I both struggle with ADHD, so this is an acutely relevant topic to us. This is part 2 in my series on focus with Dandapani, a sought-after international speaker and leading expert on leveraging the human mind and the power of focus, and author of, The Power of Unwavering Focus. Search for him and find his TED talk that went viral. Normally this would be my “What Drives You” episode where I walk through the key areas of life and ask, what drives my guests. However, the first category is spirituality, and as Dandapani is a former monk and current Hindu priest, I pressed in on a controversial statement he had written in his book. This is the quote, “In taking charge of your life, you should not leave it up to the environment or, God forbid, the Universe, such as claiming, “The Universe is going to guide me.” I can assure you Jupiter, Pluto and Uranus are not sitting around figuring out how to solve the complexities of your life." I asked Dandapani to unpack this, and what followed was a fairly blunt and irreverent discussion on spirituality in our current culture. It was unique enough that Dandapani and I spoke afterwards about more candid talks on spirituality and possibly even an event in America. Dandapani is a coach to high performing entrepreneurs and athletes, because, as he said, “They actually follow through on what I coach them to do.” And a crux of what you'll hear is Dandapani stating that to achieve success in any area of life we need a clear strategy that we adopt and adhere to, depending on our specific goals. And most high performers do this, except in the area of spirituality, where we pick and choose from a menu of spiritual concepts. And it doesn't work. So in this episode, he really takes it to task. We all know we're in an age of distraction. It feels like we all have ADHD. We are all consumed with multi-tasking and dealing with what is urgent and can't ever get any of the big, important things done. Meanwhile we all follow and applaud the people who can manage to focus and achieve great things. We think focus comes from gritting our teeth and making ourselves, and we are missing the concept. My guest today and expert on this topic is Dandapani. Dandapani grew up in his family home, went to school and actually graduated from university with a degree in electrical engineering. He left it all behind to become an ordained Hindu monk under the guidance of one of Hinduism's foremost spiritual leaders of our time. For 10 years he lived a life of serious personal discipline and training at his guru's cloistered monastery in Hawaii. Here he learned to control his mind. He learned to focus. And he believes this is the key to finding one's purpose. As you may think, “Yeah, it's not so hard to focus when you live in a monastery in Hawaii,” Dandapani agrees. Yet he believed the teachings would work in the outside world as well, and now he's proved it. He left the monastery and moved to New York where he started a business, got married, and became a father. Today he is a highly sought-after international speaker and leading expert on leveraging the human mind and the power of focus to create a life of purpose and joy. His TEDx talk has over 6.2 million views and he has other videos with tens of millions of views. He sat down with me from his thirty-three-acre spiritual sanctuary and garden in Costa Rica to discuss the message in his book, The Power of Unwavering Focus. One concept from his message has changed my life. That of the mind being a vast space with many different areas and our awareness is a glowing orb of our focus that can only light up one room at a time. You're about to hear of this, and more. We've been looking at the idea of an inherent perception style. Meaning, that you have a hard wired perception style. You will naturally experience life a certain way. The expert I brought in to discuss this is Lynda-Ross Vega. Lynda-Ross spent her life in the high end business world and partnered with clinical psychologist Gary Jordan to research and create the Perception Style Theory to help individuals identify their strengths, appreciate human differences, and navigate challenges. Their book, and my muse, is Unlock the Power of Your Perception. I discussed the concept with Lynda-Ross in the previous episode. Here I bring my brother, Jared Angaza, in to discuss this further. We accept the concept of an inherent perception style. Jared actually has twins and testifies to them having a different perception style, right out of the womb. However, we agree on the ability to understand our inherent perception style, not judge it as right or wrong, and wield it according to what will serve ourselves, others, and the situation best. How To Discern Objective Reality By Understanding Your Inherent Perception Style There you are in a situation with some other people. Something happens. People react and respond differently. Later in the retelling of what happened you hear someone telling a story that is incredibly off base. Someone else chimes in with, “That's not what happened, this is!” And you find yourself wanting to tell what really happened and your exasperated at everyone else's misinterpretation of what went down. The issue at hand is…we think what we experience is what really happened. It's fact. And guess what, that's how everyone else feels as well. If you're solving a crime, you need to get down to what really happened. In regular life however, you'll never prove anything and it seldom matters. Things happen and we all have an inherent Perspective Style we filter the happening through. This is how we experience the world. And it's not fact, it's experience. My guest and expert on this subject is Lynda-Ross Vega. Lynda Ross spent her life in the high end business world and partnered with clinical psychologist Gary Jordan to research and create the Perception Style Theory to help individuals identify their strengths, appreciate human differences, and navigate challenges. We all naturally believe our perception of the world and events is fact, when in truth, nobody can claim fact, and if you want healthy relationships, you'll want to hear what Lynda-Ross and I cover in this show.  You can watch this full episodes on YouTube, just search for Self helpful with Kevin miller  The Self Helpful podcast is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping coaches.
