Allowing exaggeratedly negative self-talk to dictate your behavior will prevent you from reaching your potential. Just because you think you're not mentally strong enough to do or handle something doesn't mean it's true. You're likely able to tolerate much more than you think. We are joined today by Speaker, Presenter, Performance Coach, TEDx Speaker, and Endurance Athlete, Luke Tyburski to talk about what he went through and how it made him mentally and physically strong after losing football. He also shares how he uses that same experience to help his clients overcome their own struggles with his coaching. A former professional footballer, Luke Tyburski now takes on some of the world's most extreme ultra-endurance challenges. Luke created and completed a world first 2000km in 12 days Ultimate Triathlon from Morocco to Monaco, with an award-winning documentary made about this inspirational feat. Constantly looking to challenge himself, Luke has run through the Sahara desert, down Mt Everest, and across a tropical forest in China without food, money, water, and with a plane to catch. He has undertaken mountainous double Ironman triathlons, taking him 35 non-stop hours to finish, and completed multiple 150-mile ultra-marathons and 250-mile non-stop bike rides, to name just a few of his accomplishments. Luke Tyburski's entire life has been about performance, overcoming obstacles while dealing with setbacks to achieve his daily best. With over 15 years of experience in the health, fitness, & sports performance industries, Luke has not only been an athlete himself but coached many to achieve their physical performance goals as well. Luke has translated his unique experiences as an extreme-endurance athlete, former professional footballer, and overcoming his dark personal battle with depression, binge eating, and suicidal tendencies into informative, engaging, and highly entertaining presentations. A published author of Chasing Extreme, Luke has shared his inspirational story to audiences around the globe alongside the mental framework he has created to be one of the world's leading endurance athletes. Luke Tyburski wants to inspire others to live outside their comfort zone, so they can catch a glimpse of their true potential. Today's guest is a mindset coach and extreme adventurer, Luke Tyburski. If we just chatted about Luke's many and varied adventures it would be a good conversation, but there's more to it than that. After fulfilling a boyhood dream to be a professional footballer, Luke was forced to retire due to injury and he fell into the crippling grasp of depression. To escape the illness he turned to extreme ultra-endurance sports and became instantly addicted! Initially, the extreme challenges satisfied his escapism running through the Sahara desert, down Mt Everest, through a tropical Chinese forest without food, water, or any money as he constantly pushed his physical and mental boundaries to the absolute limit of his capabilities With his biggest ever physical challenge looming, Luke threw everything at a 2000km, 12-day cross-continental Ultimate Triathlon from Morocco to Monaco, which he had designed himself. It almost broke him before he'd even started, and completing The Ultimate Triathlon came at a huge cost! For the next 18 months, he suffered from extreme adrenal fatigue, alongside very dark holes of depression and more binge eating. And becoming ‘lost' more than ever and in the years following The Ultimate Triathlon, he spent a lot of time reflecting on his actions, speaking to others about his thoughts, and listening to his body finally realising that he had been running away from his past. This is a very frank and honest conversation and you'll be amazed at how far an individual can push themselves and how easy it is for the pursuit of endurance goals to slip over into self-harm and destruction. We talk about: In at the deep end - The first running event, The Marathon des Sables, “toughest footrace on earth” Sports nutrition guidance is all wrong - The low-carb/high-fat experiment Go big or go home - The first triathlon - Double Brutal Training for an endurance event or self-harm - where's the line? Host Brad Kearns welcomes former pro soccer player turned extreme endurance athlete turned mental training coach Luke Tyburski to talk about his remarkable journey in pursuit of the limits of human endurance performance and the profound ups and downs and life-altering lessons Luke has experienced along the way. After playing soccer at a high level in Australia and the USA, Luke plunged headlong into ultraendurance, with his first-ever running race the epic Marathon des Sables--a legendary six-day slog through the sandy Sahara Desert covering 155 miles over six days. Luke also ran 40 miles from Mt Everest base camp into Nepal despite an intestinal ailment that prevented him from eating or drinking anything for four days prior. He created his own 12-day "Ultimate Triathlon"," swimming the Gibraltar Strait (Spain to Morocco) and pedaling and running along the Mediterranean for 2,000 kilometers total. Check out the Amazon Prime documentary "The Ultimate Triathlon." Alas, these extreme efforts (and the grueling PR and logistics efforts behind the scenes) destroyed Luke's physical health and exacerbated his clinical depression. This forced him to reckon with his purpose and recalibrate on a journey of healing. Today Luke is a mental training coach for aspiring peak performances. He coaches and lectures about how to push through perceived barriers with the force of mind, while at the same time maintaining a commitment to leading a healthy, balanced life. His autobiography is called Chasing Extreme.
Luke Tyburski is an ex professional footballer and adventure athlete who has completed some gruelling challenges including the Marathon Des Sables and The Ultimate Triathlon which Luke devised himself, which took him from Morocco to Monaco totalling 2000km in 12 days. Luke is also a published author and his book Chasing Extreme is his autobiography detailing his journey, his struggles and successes. Luke kindly sent me a signed copy of his book and I have just started reading it. He also has 2 documentaries on Amazon Prime - The Ultimate Triathlon and 500 Man, showcasing his challenges. In this episode: Luke's story from a professional soccer player to adventure athlete and a body breakdown, meeting his wife Vanda, which turned his life around from battling with his mental health, binge eating, suicidal tendencies, depression and insomnia to living his dream life. How to connect with your deep-rooted why and going within. Creating a life philosophy for yourself that is 20 words or less. Why having more than one why is so important. The power of gratitude. Why saying negative things is so detrimental to your life and health. Why you should be patient with your goals but work aggressively towards them every single day. The Ultimate Triathlon - 2000km in 12 days. How to deal with negative criticism. Plus Much Much More! This is one of my favourite episodes I have done and I loved listening to Luke who has so many words of wisdom and looks at the world in a very unique way. When studying design it is easy to envisage or want to create those designs that work towards the betterment of mankind, the type of thing that ends world hunger, prevents deaths in traffic accidents or saves us from a oncoming asteroid impact. But there are also those designs that are less "impactful" but are nevertheless applicable and worth pursuing. Sports and designs related around sports are one such example. Would the world be any worse off if Bobsleigh racing hadn't been invented? Likely not (besides the obvious lack of a Cool Runnings movie which would be a shame) but I think you can agree that the design of the vehicles has its place in our society (maybe less so in South Africa admittedly). Luke Tyburski has overcome more in his relatively short life than most of us. His dream as a child was to play professional soccer on the world stage. And he accomplished exactly that as an adult, playing in lower-level professional leagues in California, Louisiana, and the UK. But his dreams were cut short after a series of debilitating injuries. He couldn't maintain the workload of a high-level soccer player without getting hurt. Soon, he succumbed to severe clinical depression. With no backup plan and thoughts of suicide running through his mind, Luke felt lost. But then he discovered endurance sports. Reinventing himself as an ultra-endurance adventurer, Luke started competing in the most brutal events on the planet: The Ultimate Triathlon - a 12-day, 2,000km triathlon across multiple countries Marathon des Sables - a 6-day, 156-mile ultramarathon in the Sahara Desert The Everest Ultramarathon - a 40-mile ultra going down from Base Camp (elevation 17,000 feet) And these are just the most extreme events! Now, Luke is still focused on ultra-endurance events but also in sharing his journey. In this episode of the podcast, Luke and I talk about his background as a soccer player and how he decided to become an ultra-endurance athlete. Specifically, we discuss: What he learned from being injured so frequently as a soccer player How those injuries influence his training for running events The shifts in mindset that were required to transition from soccer to ultra running How running helped him fight his clinical depression What keeps Luke motivated today Luke is a teacher and has a way of lifting up those around him. I felt inspired, motivated, and in a positive state of mind after I spoke with him and I know you will, too! Twas the night before the Isklar Norseman Xtreme Triathlon and all through the cabins, not a creature was stirring, not even a triathlete. The wetsuits were hung by the athletes with care, as they dreamt of the black tee shirt, that would soon be theirs. And the ferry stood still on Eidfjord's cold waters, waiting to take them beyond the shore. Soon they'd be jumping and their heart rates racing….After running down Dag Oliver, Managing Director of Norseman, at The London Triathlon Show, I was given the very enjoyable task of taking over Norseman's Instagram Stories over the 4-day race period. This is my journey and story.

WITW In Depth 1/4 - Luke turned to Ultra Endurance after a football career plagued by injury. Feeling a loss of identity, at 28 he signed up to his first ever race, the MDS, before pursuing countless adventures including The Ultimate Triathlon.
To sign up for a 250-kilometer foot race through the Sahara Desert without having run more than 10k in your life, and with only 6-months to train, may seem like total insanity to most people but not to Luke Tyburski. Especially not at the time in his life when he decided to take on the toughest foot race on earth known as the Marathon De Sables. What Luke couldn't see at that time was that he was desperate to escape the deep pain within that was left over from unexpectantly leaving a career he dreamed of since the age of four. He did not have the tools at that time to navigate the intensity of his failed expectations and loss of identity. So as most people do who avoid the deep pain of sadness, he ran. And he ran. And he ran. Across the Sahara Desert, down Mount Everest and through the jungle on an island off the coast China. Luke quickly moved on, or so he thought, from his identity as a professional soccer player and into the role of endurance adventurer. From running he added cycling and then swimming. In a matter of a few years, Luke took his adventuring to the extreme level and in 2015, crafted his perfect endurance overdose. The Ultimate Triathlon: Morocco to Monaco in just 12-days included swimming across the Strait of Gibraltar, cycling along the coast of Spain and France and then running into Monaco. The entire event covered over 1200 miles and with his crew of four, Luke made history once again. But it was what occurred following The Ultimate Triathlon that spawned his greatest achievement yet. Luke's recently released book Chasing Extreme is an up close and personal look at the story of a guy who will never give up. His vulnerability is palpable as he gives us a very raw perspective into his struggles, realizations and healing that have taken place over his lifetime. He describes the writing of this book as better than therapy and shares with us just how painful it was to relive the darkest of times in his life. He has since entered the light and he now has clarity on how he wants to live his life. In this episode, he shares guiding principles and sage advice with our listeners. We have been following Luke for a while now and we are incredibly grateful to have connected with him to share this podcast with the YT community. *CONTEST ALERT* Please share this episode on your social channels this week, tag both YogiTriathlete and Luke Tyburski and get yourself in the running to win a signed copy of Chasing Extreme. Today, I get to share a conversation with one of my favourite people – ultra endurance athlete, adventurer, speaker, coach and author Luke Tyburski. This is Luke's second appearance on All Things Risk. If you listened way back to episode 9, you know that Like completed a crazy adventure called the Ultimate Triathlon. This involved swimming across the Strait of Gibraltar, cycling along the coast of Spain, and running along southern France into Monaco – 2,000+ km over 12 days. The Ultimate Triathlon is now the subject of an award-winning documentary. However, there is a deeper, more interesting, raw and inspirational side to Luke. For years, Luke concealed a diagnosis of clinical depression – and it is only very recently that he shared how he persevered through some of the darkest moments in his life in his new book Chasing Extreme. The message of Chasing Extreme and that Luke brings is particularly important to us men – we don't typically acknowledge our feelings – and the longer that goes on, the more we suffer – the outcomes of that are never positive. Luke is a great role model to inspire us to talk about these things more openly (as I do at a point in the conversation). In doing so, I think we all benefit. We get into all of that, as well as the importance or purpose in facing uncertainty and facing challenges, Like's future challenges, and loads more. Motivational speaker, adventure seeker, and coach who has raced triathlons worldwide. Luke Tyburski has pushed himself to extreme limits, in fact well past where his body could thrive. This interview shows us the limits we can push ourselves to but also shows us the importance of self-care and dealing with the issues that face us that stand in the way of our full potential. Luke is real and honest with us about the demons he faced, and what he had to do in order to heal his body. We discuss how looking at the big picture and that our lives are more than our sport and that balance is important in everything we do is what should drive us. But also that we should not limit ourselves and instead look to what is possible and how we can try to achieve dreams. Today’s Guest Luke Tyburski is an Ultra Runner, Coach, and Motivational Speaker who undertook a 2000KM, 12 day cross-continental Ultimate Triathlon that he designed himself in 2015. Luke is always up for an adventure, and has done things like race down Mt Everest, learned to surf, ran (literally for his life) on an island in the South China Sea after a typhoon, and the Marathon de Sables. Luke grew up in a small Australian town where he dreamed of playing professional football (aka soccer for those of us in the US) and then achieved that dream. Luke hosts the Kinetic Revolution Train Smarter Podcast. What you will learn about: How Luke declared at age 4 that he wanted to be a football player. But how it took him hard work and asking for assistance as he was not naturally a “young phenom” and often never made the team in the early teens. His journey to being a Professional player included moving to the US from Australia and getting his education here, and then on to Belgium and the UK playing professionally. How overtraining and being in a bad relationship added stress to his life and all ended up with him landing in a deep depression and eventual retirement from soccer at age 28. How as athletes we look at and review our training and nutrition but we also need to learn to review our relationships and how it is impacting our lives and what we need to change in ourselves or our relationships that help us reduce the stress in our lives and allow us to be our best. How he registered for the Marathon de Sables (6 marathons in 7 days) right as he retired, while he was still icing a calf injury, 6 months out from the race. So essentially instead of dealing with the big thing that had been taken out of his life, he “ran away, literally” to do a race. How he designed his own triathlon, the Ultimate Triathlon. He blacked out during a segment and woke up in a hotel with no idea how he got there. And then wanted to keep going. Eventually he realized he was addicted to endurance sports and that was his drug of choice. Rather than dealing with his depression and mourning the loss of his life as he had known it. How the Ultimate Triathlon almost broke him because all the overtraining and failure to deal with the depression all wreaked havoc with his body. Even after the event ended he threw himself into promoting the documentary. But he still had to stop everything for months in order to heal himself. And how he learned from the experience. Inspirational Quotes: I thought people who did half marathons were crazy and those who did full marathons were just on a death wish, people who do it are just nuts. And then my friend told me about this race in the Sahara Desert…..Marathon de Sables. I believe there is no one else that is mentally tougher than I am. I believe I am the toughest person in the world. Reflect on what went wrong and what you can do to fix it so you don’t make the same mistake twice. I realized the potential I had as a runner. if I opened my mind to what I was truly capable of, what else could I achieve. Luke is a speaker, endurance adventurer and mindset coach. He has run through the Sahara desert, down Mt Everest, and through a tropical forest in China without any food, water, money, and with a plane to catch. In 2015, Luke completed a self-created ‘Ultimate Triathlon’ from Morocco to Monaco. This 2000km in 12 day cross-continental adventure pushed both his mind and body to their limits and beyond. An award winning documentary was made about this world first feat, and Luke was mentioned in Forever Sports magazine’s 50 fittest athletes in the world for 2016. Luke has completed all these challenges, and many more, after battling with depression, and retiring because of physical injuries from a professional soccer career. 3:00- You prepped for 4 years and just 2 days before the event, a major change happened! Clive Maxheath sits down with ex-pro football turned endurance adventurer Luke Tyburski. In this rollercoaster interview, Luke shares quite the life story - from the highs of realising his boyhood dream of becoming a pro footballer, to suffering depression after injury cut short his career. Finally, after all these ups and downs Luke has the insight that breaks the spell, allows him to accept his truth and today share his experiences via platforms such as world-renowned podcasts like 'Men On Form' B-) to inspire others :-)

‘I had a dream crowded with clarity to push my limits so I could see a glimpse of my potential.' ~ Luke Tyburski, Endurance AdventurerListen to endurance adventurer Luke Tyburski, as he joins the LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS podcast where he shares how he swam, biked and ran from Morocco to Monaco in only 12 days.Imagine swimming 400 laps in a 50 meter pool, cycling over 1300 kilometers in less than 5 days and then running 14 combined marathons in only 7 days – yup, that's what Luke did and the best part, he captured it in the acclaimed documentary film THE ULTIMATE TRIATHLON.Luke shares a simple story with host Yogi Roth about how this epic adventure began with him looking at a globe and asking himself where he wanted to explore in the world to the realization that he would swim, ride and run 2000 kilometers in just 12 days, just because he felt it in his soul.A former professional athlete, Luke went through the struggles that many go through as transition occurs in life and he openly shares his newfound look on love, how a simple sign in his home as a child inspired him to put one foot in front of the other and that once you start to show yourself compassion you can become whole. His film has been seen across the globe and will inspire you to seek your purpose while expanding your comfort zone as Luke leaves a 'trail of inspiration.'Find Luke at http://luketyburski.com or follow him on social media @LukeTyburski.You can also find his film, THE ULTIMATE TRIATHLON: http://theultimatetriathlon.coTo find more podcasts seeking to answer the question, 'What does it mean to be human?' follow @YogiRoth on all social media or visit http://yogiroth.com
This week, we are joined by Australian endurance athlete and motivational speaker Luke Tyburski. Luke is the subject of the new documentary, The Ultimate Triathlon, which documents his grueling journey towards completing the notorious Morocco to Monaco triathlon, a 2,000 kilometer, 12 day taste of hell on earth. To put it into perspective, The Ultimate Triathlon is the equivalent of swimming 500 laps in a 50 meter pool - then cycling the entire length of Britain, and then running a staggering 14 - yes, 14 - marathons. All in less than 2 weeks. In this episode, I wanted to gain some insight not just into Luke's physical performance and training regimen, but also into what goes on in the mind of a person who willingly subjects himself to such grueling conditions. How does he do it? Why? And what can we learn from it? Throughout the episode, we talk about endurance, goal setting, tenacity, and how you can learn to overcome even the toughest of physical limitations. Luke shares how he has been able to train himself to push past the breaking point, and there are a ton of great takeaways that are sure to inspire and motivate you.
“If you want extreme results, you need to do extreme things.”Andrew “Spud Fit” TaylorOne of the great privileges of hosting this podcast is the occasional opportunity it presents to shift focus from conversations with globally prominent thought leaders to shine a bright spotlight on the struggles and triumphs of the everyman.Folks living average, relatable lives. Anonymous individuals dealing with issues all too many of us confront and combat — obesity, depression, disease, addiction and/or a sense of general dissatisfaction with their current life status. Authentic souls who reach the limit of their pain threshold and cross that tipping point to finally proclaim, enough is enough. On a personal note, nothing gives me more satisfaction than celebrating those who courageously challenge their life paradigm, step outside the cozy comfort zone, and attempt the extraordinary — all in the interest of gaining control of their well being and seizing the reigns of their life path.Folks like Josh LaJaunie, who lost over 200 pounds to conquer ultramarathons and even grace the cover of this month's Runners World magazine. Or Brett & David Wilcox – the father-son duo who ran across the USA to raise GMO awareness. Luke Tyburski fits the bill — a guy who overcame depression to conquer The Ultimate Triathlon. And I'd add Adam Sud to that list — a young guy who kicked adderal, reversed his diabetes and found a life.Sharing these experiences is what makes this podcast different from the others — meaningful and special in a very unique way.So if you enjoy the uplifting everyman story, then you are in for a treat today.About a year ago, Andrew Taylor stepped onto the scale — 334 pounds. The Aussie didn't like what he saw. He didn't like how he felt. Clinically depressed, medicated and hopelessly addicted to unhealthy foods, his elevator was going down — fast.Fed up and sick & tired of being sick & tired, he drew a line in the sand and decided to step over it.It was time to finally wake up and seize the reigns of his physical, mental and emotional health and well being. To once and for all reclaim the life he felt quickly slipping away.Blessed with self-awareness, he saw his path to freedom would lay not in balance but rather in what most would consider drastic and extreme measures.Andrew decided that he would eat nothing but potatoes for an entire year.Nothing. But. Potatoes. For an entire year.On January 2, 2016, all 334 depressed pounds of Andrew popped open his phone, clicked record, and announced his quest on YouTube — to a subscriber base of exactly zero. The single video soon morphed into a daily vlog, a raw, personal and authentic look into the highs, lows, how to's and whatnots of a potato-fueled journey Andrew dubbed Spud Fit.He presumed nobody would care. This was for him. Surprisingly, the world took notice. It wasn't long before the global media picked up Andrew's personal interest story and before he could even blink, his wild adventure was foisted into the white hot spotlight.Over the last year, Andrew has been profiled in countless publications — eve... If you listen to podcasts on Ironman and endurance events you may have heard of the Ultimate Triathlon. Luke has given a lot of interviews on his journey including a terrific pair of interviews that you can find at www.zentriathlon.com . That being said this is the kind of story that I absolutely love because it is something that if you didn't know he'd already done it you would say that what he did was impossible. But he did it. Luke Tyburski put together the idea of the Ultimate Triathlon because he says he was "escaping from life" and wanted a "massive deep challenge" You can find full details about The Ultimate Triathlon at http://theultimatetriathlon.co/ He swam across the straight of Gibraltar, Biked through Spain to France and then ran the equivalent of 14 marathons across France to Monaco. It's crazy, right? But he did it. You have to hear it to believe it. Because Luke has given several interviews about this event I do try to stick totally to the highlights of the event. Even with that condensing a 12 day event into one interview makes for a nice long podcast. I want to give a great shout out to Warren Pole for connecting me with Luke. Luke made a documentary of his journey which has just released. I haven't seen it myself but I'm going to and Luke ends the interview with a very special offer to anybody who wants to put together a group showing of the documentary. You can find Luke on twitter @luketyburski He's also on Instagram as @luketyburski Thank you very much Luke for being on the Mile after Mile Podcast. And as always check out my adventures at www.amysaysso.com
In an attempt to overcome bouts of deep depression, Luke Tyburski sees out on a journey to create The Ultimate Triathlon...25km, cycling the equivalent of the length of Ireland twice and running 12 marathons in 6 days....an incredible story on the eve of the screening of the Documentary of The Ultimate Triathlon in Belfast on 27th September 2016
This is the second Mile after Mile Podcast where I interview two separate folks but the first time I interview two people each about a separate event. In this podcast I interview Warren Pole about his journey to the UTMB finish line. The UTMB is an ultra trail race in Europe that is truly epic. Warren signed up for the 100 miler on a whim and it didn't go well at all. So he went back to the drawing board and tried again. It took him 2 tries and a few years to make this happen. I then interview his beautiful wife Erica about her experience at a very famous triathlon called the Alp d'Huez. After we talk about their personal experiences at those races we take a few minutes and talk about how their experiences in endurance sports led them to create a nutrition product called 33shake. We talk about a crazy event called The Ultimate Triathlon which you can hear about here on the Zen Triathlon Podcast. If you are interested in trying 33shake you can try it yourself and use the code Amy33 for a 10% discount. Thank you Warren and Erica for joining me on the Mile after Mile Podcast. And be sure to visit www.AmySaysSo.com for Amy's adventures including I've put up a review of the 33shake Chia Energy Gel so that you can see what I my personal experience with the 33Shake Chia Energy Gel.
Luke Tyburski completed the 2000km triathlon which went from Morocco to Monaco. We also discuss his battle with depresseion and how he manages this on a daily basis.
Luke Tyburski is an extreme athlete who has just finished making a documentary on The Ultimate Triathlon, a 2,000km swim, cycle, run race from Morocco to Monaco. I know, mental. He's coming to Belfast on 27th September 2016 and Conor Devine tells us a little bit more about the event
The Ultimate Triathlon - Climb, Row, Cycle. On 1st February 2014, James became the first and only person to have rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, successfully summited Mount Everest and cycled 18,000 miles around the world. Seven years prior to this, he was recovering from a serious motorcycle accident that left him with broken legs as well as a severely broken and dislocated ankle. The prognosis was that he was likely to suffer a permanent walking impairment and would certainly not be able to continue the active physical lifestyle he had enjoyed up to that point. James has continued pushing boundaries and in 2015 attempted to row 4,000 miles across the Indian Ocean with his Epileptic rowing partner. Their aim was to prove that despite having Epilepsy or a disability there is no barrier to pursuing ones goals. Two hundred and fifty miles offshore James’ rowing partner sustained a head injury resulting in a full-scale ocean rescue that was global news. James found himself clinging to a rope ladder on the side of a 100,000-ton crude oil tanker as he climbed to safety in storm force winds. James has raised tens of thousands of pounds for his chosen charities as he has climbed, rowed, and cycled his way around the world! James is also a keen supporter of Scouting and is a Scouting Ambassador. Ian and James Ketchell discuss:- Rowing the Atlantic - how to break it down Climbing Everest - Keeping your head Cycling around the world, speaking at schools & meeting people en route Obtaining Sponsorship from Nandos His new rowing around Britain project #gbrow The new book 'Ultimate Triathlon' James can be found at jamesketchell.net Show Sponsors:- Phil 'The Colonel' Mustard Benefit 2016 Durham and England cricketer Phil will be working tirelessly this year to raise money for his chosen charities: The Children's Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, The Chronicle Sunshine Fund, and The PCA Benevolent Fund. Today we have Luke Tyburski whom we had on back in episode #85 talking all about his quest of doing “The Ultimate Triathlon” a 2000km journey over 10 days. Luke had to deal with changes to 2 years of planning from the get go … And many other obstacles. It was pretty much a case of adapt or not finish. Was it worth it? Listen to find out. In today's episode we discuss: Facing challenges before day 1. Learning to adapt on the fly. The value of a crew and their advice. Listening to the body. How Luke fuelled his body for 1200kms. Dealing with setbacks. Adjusting the plan. Lolling after the body. What this journey has taught Luke and what we can all learn from his experience. What's next for Luke. This week I had the absolute privilege of chatting with Luke Tyburski. Luke's whole view on life and his amazing adventures could mean I could honestly talk with him for days on each of his individual adventures. We focus on his story of the Ultimate Triathlon that he recently completed and also touch on some of his other amazing achievements including the Marathon Des Sables, his first ever triathlon The Double Brutal Extreme Triathlon (yes this was his first ever triathlon) and his experience learning to surf by riding 400kms to reach the coast before learning to surf the very next morning. Like many of us Luke hasn't always this motivated, goal driven and generally happy. If you're in a bit of a spot right now where you're not totally happy then I'm sure Luke's story will help you to grow and overcome your struggles. Luke's Hula Hoop theory is one we can all take something from. Throw it where you can't see it anymore, find it and move yourself back into the middle again. The further you throw it the bigger the adventure. You can find Luke at www.luketyburski.com and he would love to hear your feedback. Until next week Keeping moving Keep going forward and Keep kicking goals
Luke Tyburski has designed the past three years of his life to push the limits of what “we” think to be possible. “What gets me through the dark days is knowing that I can make a difference in someone else’s life if I apply myself.”Luke TyburskiAussie born, UK-dwelling adventure athlete Luke Tyburski isn’t superman. He’s not famous nor is he a world champion. And he’s the first to say he’s just not that talented. In most ways Luke is a normal bloke. An everyman who decided to face his debilitating battle with clinical depression through the lens of adventure and ultra-endurance sports.Soccer obsessed as a young boy, from the get go Luke realized he lacked the God-given athletic gifts enjoyed by his teammates. Nonetheless, perseverance prevailed and Luke achieved his life-long dream of traveling the world as a professional footballer.Unfortunately, that career was cut short by significant, chronic & persistent injuries. What followed was an unexpected yet quite severe bout with acute, clinical depression — a back hole of desperation that often left him bedridden and teetering on hopelessness. To escape this prison, Luke dug deep. Through sheer force of will matched with equal parts faith, he compelled his mutinying body, mind and spirit to simply get up, get outside and begin exploring again — one step at a time.Having never ran more than 10 kilometers at any one time, and with only six months to prepare, in 2012 Luke conquered the infamous Marathon des Sables, a 250 kilometer, six stage self-sufficient running race across the treacherous and unrelenting sand dunes of the Moroccan Sahara.Since then he has competed in a variety of adventure races, including the Mt. Everest Ultra Marathon. His first ever triathlon? The double ironman distance Double Brutal Extreme Triathlon. My kind of guy.Currently, Luke's sights are set on achieving the truly extraordinary — a self-styled 12-day, 2000 kilometer adventure he calls The Ultimate Triathlon that kicks off in Morocco with a swim across the Straight of Gibraltar before cycling and running the coastline all the way to Monaco. It’s easy to admire the feats of the truly touched. It’s inspirational. But I cherish sharing stories like Luke's because they are aspirational. And because relatable, everyman guys like Luke demonstrate that big dreams are possible and accessible for all. This is a conversation that explores:* what its like to be clinically depressed* preparing for The Ultimate Triathlon* developing confidence as an outmatched youth* how attention to nutrition changed his game* the importance of a holistic approach to well-being* endurance sports as escapism* the importance of adventurous life* how the compassion of strangers in Nepal changed his perspective* what keeps him motivated; and* how to bridge the gap between inspiration and actionAn adventurous life is a worth leading. Luke's life is well worth the examination. I sincerely hope you enjoy our discussion. How can you invite more adventure into your life? I'd love to hear about it in the comments section below.Peace + Plants,Listen & Subscribe on iTunes | Soundcloud | StitcherSHOW NOTESHARRYS: Today's show was sponsored by Harrys — a sup...
