It wasn't long before his talent for triathlon shone through, with McKenzie taking home bronze at the 2001 Edmonton ITU Junior World Championships.   Honing his skills in the ITU ranks on the Continental and World Cup circuits, McKenzie continued to develop as an athlete. He competed in the Busselton, Western Australia Ironman and led to about 30kms and ended up coming in 3rd. 27:17 - When Luke looks back on his career, different races hold memories for different reasons and he explains some of the more memorable and important events in his career. 33:53 - Luke and Greg discus some of his lows within his Ironman career and what lessons he's gained. Luke was one of my favourite athletes growing up and so on a personal note this chat meant a lot to me. What your all here for - Joining us today is Beth McKenzie; IRONMAN & 70.3 Champion, Chief Creator of Wyn Republic and Malo Republic triathlon apparel lines, mother of two and wife to Pro triathlete Luke McKenzie and SHE. Has just announced she’ll be doing her FINAL Pro Triathlon race in Challenge Roth This summer. With a legendary lineup expected here at Challenge Roth this summer Beth has been training harder now more than ever to make her last race an epic one and I am excited to have her here to talk about it! This will be her first-time racing Challenge Roth BUT this isn’t her first time at the event. Back in 2014 she watched her husband Luke compete in the pro field from the sidelines with her 6-week-old daughter. If any of you watched We are Triathletes movie on Challenge Roth then you’ll recognize Luke was one of the athletes they highlighted in the movie and followed him along his journey to Roth! So for the first time listeners, a bit of a backstory here with the Road to Roth Series – at the beginning of August 2019 I announced that I’ll be doing my first full distance triathlon at Challenge Roth in 2020, and since then, I found that a lot of listeners were actually on a similar path; whether it was with Roth or another race; but they too were on their crazy journey to their first full distance triathlon and looking forward to hearing content specific to the full distance! Of course, never having actually done the distance before, I figured everyone could benefit the most in a series where I interview top professional triathletes and coaches that will be able to provide a ton of training tips specific to the full distance as well as give us the motivation and insight we need to help us maximize our performances come race day! So Beth has joined us here today as we delve into her thoughts and anticipation on what could be one of the most memorable races of her career. This will be her final pro triathlon race and she is aiming for a speedy sub-9 hour goal so I hope you join me in cheering her on and sending her positive vibes and warm wishes for her race! Some other themes we explore include her incredible story behind her triathlon & athletic-wear apparel brands, training throughout pregnancy, getting into triathlon without a swimming background in her late 20’s, and we even go over some sound training advice and motivation that you can use for your next race! This is an awesome podcast episode so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did; and now… let’s get into it!

I should have dropped the f-bomb in the title. It would have more impact.  Seriously. Why are athletes wanting things easy? Race after race we hear how tough it was like the toughness of doing an Ironman was not expected. I don't get it. A big reason we sign up for these events is because we are looking for a challenge. We are seeing (even if we are only aiming to finish and don't care what time it is, other than it being under cut off) if we have what it takes. What we have deep within ourselves when the going gets tough.  Yet that goes out the window when it does get tough ... And athletes are wishing it was easier.  Yeah it was choppy, yeah it was windy .. Yeah it was .... But some athletes still went fast and many of them don't have anything you don't.  Pete and I talk IMWA, why athletes need to get real, use the power of negative preparation and we talk about the absurdity of 70 athletes not finishing the swim. I also give some accountability home work at the end. To do one thing... Make you a better athlete.  In today’s episode, we discuss: Strategy, preparation, execution. Luke Mckenzie is a badass.  Giving in.  Disrespect. The swim and how NOT to be one of those 70 that didn't finish. Why it shouldn't be easy.  What you need to do now if you did race.  What you need to do if swimming isn't a strong point. Today we sit down and have a super informative chat with Peter Mckenzie. Now if that surname sounds familiar....it should. Of course we are talking about Luke Mckenzie's father! And this is one of the most knowledge packed episodes yet! Peter has long history of coaching and teaching and over the years has formulated some fantastic philosophies and strategies to help athletes achieve their true potential. It was a lot of fun talking shop with Petee and gain some insights from someone with so much experience. In this episode we cover: The fundamentals of triathlon. Assessing strengths and weaknesses. Refining economy with drills. Building the journey. Being committed and supportive as a parent of an athlete. Communication. Actually, we talk about this a lot! How training is a progression of development. Developing patience. Looking for marginal gains. Pacing! Dealing with time-poor, Type A athletes. Shutting out the noise. Recognising coachable athletes. How no two athletes are the same; coaching the individual. The unconquered frontier in this sport; the mental game. Recognising negative thoughts and acting accordingly. This week Pete and I get to interview our good friend, new dad, fellow 3326RIDE rider and world class triathlete Luke McKenzie. This didn't even feel like an interview, more like sitting down having a chat over a fat black coffee. Don't be fooled though, Luke provides some insights into being a world class athlete, keeping the motivation high and the stepping stones to being runner up in last years Ironman World Championships. Grab yourself your favourite beverage, sit back and enjoy. What we cover: Moving to the USA full time. Being a new dad. Managing the schedule with Wynne and both parents training for IM. The ups and downs. Learning how to race. How racing and winning in Asia provided the stepping stones to Kona. Winning IM Cairns. A couple of things Luke does that leads to success. Progression in Kona and making the necessary improvements. What it's all about. How he keeps his motivation high. Learning the lessons from the obstacles along the way. Getting through the hiccups. How to make the best out of a bad situation and what doing that provides. Coaches, mentors and self coaching. Lukes biggest advisor. Pushing the boundaries of tech and the lessons so far. Bike position - what's important. Strength training. On coaching athletes. Stress and what Ironman shouldn't be. On setting goals. Training. Giving back. Jim also discusses men’s second place finisher Luke McKenzie and his drastic change from 2012 to 2013.  Luke went from a low cadence cyclist to a high cadence cyclist in just one year.
