Send us a textAs we grew up, music was the most important thing there was. As part of that, we bought some albums that weren't great, and time has generally proven our assessments right! This episode, we talk about some of those "dud" albums, by artists like Bowie, U2, Led Zeppelin, Golden Earring, Neil Young, Alice Cooper, Phil Collins and Yes, to name but a few. In Rock News, we talk about a Filipino family who perform Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love with uncanny precision and an auction of Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie's memorabilia, wardrobe and belongings. Our “Album You Must Listen to Before You Die” is Dire Straits' monster 1985 hit, “Brothers in Arms”. Released at a time when Dire Straits could do no wrong, this album sold over 30 million copies worldwide and went 9 times platinum in the US alone. We damn it with faint praise. On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Plouffe listen to Bell's next pick, U2's "Songs of Innocence". Released in 2014, it is their 13th album. It was released following the Apple Event to announce the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch, with Apple making the album available to all iTunes users at no additional cost. Within a month, the album had been listened to by 81 million users and downloaded 26 million times. However, many artists were upset by the way the album was released, with some saying that giving the music away for free cheapened the art form. A great many iPhone users were upset that the album was automatically added to their phones, and Apple had to release a webpage to remove the album from users' accounts. Critics were also polarized by the issue, as well as the musical content itself, with many saying the album was very bland and middle-of-the-road. What will the boys think of the album? Will they all try and acquire it for their record libraries or will they have to have Bell exorcise it from their ears? Come along and find out!

Album Fight – U2 Vs U2 Songs of Surrender, Fight 1 - Album Fights pit one album against the other in a boxing format. Each round is judged by a panel of three judges. Those judges scored based upon a 10pt must system. In this fight, we've got the newly released Songs of Surrender in the ring against itself. U2's new album features 40 songs. In the vinyl format, the album becomes a 2 record set. Each record has 10 songs. So Side 1's song 1 will face Side two's first song. Then Side 1's song two against Side 2's side two. The host is Michael Lipari, Judges are Brian Betterirdge, Todd Nemet, and Pete A Turner. The fight analysis is conducted by Richard Lackie and his patent pending system. The producers are Michael Lipari and Pete A Turner. Album Fights are created by Pete A Turner and Jon Leon Guerrero. Today, given the recent release of U2's 40 song album ‘Songs of Surrender' and their documentary on Disney plus, the guys discuss the band U2 (1:32) and give their top 5 U2 songs. Ali starts off by talking about the funny coincidence between his book and Bono's book ‘Surrender', as well the band ‘Inhaler'. They start off by discussing the early days of the band and their tremendous success over the years. They then discuss the new documentary on Disney Plus ‘Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, with Dave Letterman' and whether 40 songs is too much for a new album. They talk about a hilarious incident between former Canadian prime minister Paul Martin and Bono. Then they both list their top 5 U2 songs (17:15). U2's drummer has had some health problems as of late… we have no evidence that he has gout, but nevertheless, the guys discuss gout in the second half of the pod (36:34). Asif talks about the definition of gout and how it is caused by the deposition of uric acid in your joints in people who have difficulty eliminating uric acid from your body. He then describes the classic exquisitely painful gout attacks. Asif then goes over the major foods that can trigger gouty attacks. The guys then discuss whether Ali was actually diagnosed with gout or not. Asif then talks about how you treat gout and prevent gouty attacks. Songs Of Surrender - a collection of 40 seminal U2 songs from across the band's catalogue, re-recorded and re-imagined for 2023 in sessions spanning the last two years. Songs Of Surrender is curated and produced by The Edge and sees the band revisit some of the most celebrated songs of their 40+ year career, including 'With Or Without You', 'One', 'Beautiful Day', 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' and 'Invisible', for a musical reimagining resulting in a completely new recording of each track, to include the arrangements and, in some cases, new lyrics.

This week we head back to the 9th of September 2014 and discuss one of the most heinous crimes in the history of music; stadium rock megastars U2's 13th studio album Songs of Innocence. After 2009's No Line On The Horizon album “only” went platinum once in both the US and the UK, U2 were keen to make themselves relevant to a broader spectrum of music fans once again. After a protracted 5 year recording process, Songs of Innocence was not just released, it was shoved into the iTunes library of everyone on Earth as a little gift, due to the bands ongoing relationship with tech giants Apple. Nice idea in theory, but the response was one of outrage from the non-U2 loving contingent of the planet. Which, despite them being proper fucking massive, is still a hell of a lot of people. Years later the only thing that anyone can actually remember about the album and the band around this time is the fact that we all own it, which in these days of streaming culture is hardly the worst thing in the world is it? One thing that tends to be overlooked about Songs of Innocence is the fact that, yes, it is actually an album and therefore does actually have music on it, so… we should probably talk about that actual music right? We give it our best shot, but, damn, it's not easy with music this bland. https://uproxx.com/indie/u2-songs-of-innocence-apple-iphone-free-album-anniversary/?fbclid=IwAR11HPxAffwSNPT-lAYk-_8nrjUCpYohBFN_JuAM2Ie-pr0-bQGrAFDU4Tc (Uproxx article "Five Years Later, It's Time To Admit We Overreacted About Apple Putting A Free U2 Album On Our Phones") https://consequence.net/2016/05/why-radiohead-is-the-only-rock-band-to-perfect-the-surprise-album-release/?fbclid=IwAR2yBSJi7Ra4NRuOXvMMIodOF8IkFdfKhGXEtoBynwkrlolG6WYwvnlPsiM (Consequence of Sound article "Why Radiohead Is the only Rock Band to Perfect the Surprise Album Release)

On this week's episode of Make it Stop we continue to rail against insufferable, self-important celebrities who take themselves way too seriously, this time taking aim at U2 and their 2014 album Songs of Innocence, which was famously auto-downloaded to every iPod in America without consent. That being said, it's not too terrible of an album, with some really standout songs along the way, lots of Bono falsetto, some cool storytelling, and the Edge's trademark echoey guitar sounds. There's also the many, many songs that sound like U2 from the 80s fed through an Imagine Dragons filter, which predictably blow. Helping us dig through the manure to find the diamonds are our dear friends Maggie and Ashleigh of the Rock Candy Podcast, our sister show (and fellow Pantheon fam) with the common stated goal of "making fun of assholes". We do the best we can and have a blast with lots of laughs and unnecessary rambles about Bono's sex life (and his canon relationship with Enya). Part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.
