The City of DJinn project began as an invitation by Mickey Weems, Project Coordinator to send Marwan Kamel and Micah Bezold to travel from Chicago to Hawaii to perform as the City of DJinn and bring Muslim musical artists to perform and discuss Islam, Sufism, mysticism and transgression to Hawaii. Weems submitted a proposal and was granted by SEEDS IDEAS and the Department of English at UH Manoa. Kamel and Bezold are both students of Sufism who take traditional Arabic music and give it an American twist as their version of drone rock. When Covid 19 struck, it didn't stop the musical duo from completing the project and they started to work remotely and the collaboration extended to include some of the following artists: DJ Chris Chartier, hip-hop activist Navid Najafi, Poet Yasmine Ruhia, Sama Essa of Oman, DJ Russell Dement-Trent, DJ Yves Kline, violinist Patrick Park , KTUH Honolulu and myself, DJ Nocturna who helped coordinate the interviews. There's a whole list of people to thank for this project but it could not have been possible without the undying passion and dedication of Mickey Weems Kamel and Bezold ground their music in the intricacies of maqam, the classical system of melodic modes in Arab music and Amercian rock. "I went through a punk phase," he recalled, but was not satisfied with American music and the instruments with which he had become familiar, first the violin as a child, then the guitar. Eventually, he encountered his true love, the buzuq, a long necked string instrument found in Syria and Lebanon. As rooted as he is in classical Arabic music, one might suspect that his second love is innovation. But he finds much of his energy is dedicated to resurrection. This multitasking duo, City of DJinn create post-Tarab - a longform sonic tapestry of dark, psychedelic, drone rock that draws from experimental music vernacular as well maqam tradition. Their arsenal of instruments ranges from electric buzuq, modified quarter-tone acoustic-electric guitar, violin, fretless electric guitar, foot pedal drums/cymbals, darbuka, daf, DIY stompbox and samplers. https://cityofdjinn.bandcamp.com/releaseshttps://somnimage.bandcamp.com/album/city-of-djinnSubscribe to my monthly mailing list for the latest music news, updates and my next interviews and events:http://eepurl.com/gtw6PPQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna Every Saturday on Modsnap RadioKMOD: San Antonio"San Antonio's leading alternative streaming Radio Station since 2017"Listen : http://modsnapradio.comPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DJNocturna2pm (HST), 5pm (PST), 6pm (MST), 7pm (CST), 8pm (EST)
~Part of the Roots of Resilience in An Age of Crisis event series; co-presented with Real Food Media and the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance~ Sea vegetables, shellfish, fish—each species has its own story, culture, and policy issues. These species, their environments, and the cultures that depend on them are at risk due to agricultural runoff, genetically engineered seafood, and the climate crisis. Peleke Flores of Mālama Hulēʻia and Carl Wassilie of Dam Watch International join Host Tiffani Patton to share stories of resistance against the corporate takeover of the ocean and their efforts to protect keystone species, livelihoods, and cultures along the Pacific Northwest and in Hawai'i. Photo by Peter Vanosdall on Unsplash Carl Wassilie Carl was born and raised in Alaska, rooted deep in salmon culture and Salmon communities. His Yup'ik name is Angut'aq; and has feet in both the Yup'ik and Western worldviews as a Yup'ik biologist. Since the devastating 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, Carl has worked on defending salmon ecosystems and the communities and Relations on Mother Earth, that depend on them. As the rapid climate warming in the Arctic has brought natural changes to the marine and terrestrial landscape, Carl has been challenging the military industrial complex expanding North. Carl has worked with sovereign Tribes, First Nations and other communities across Turtle Island to protect the cultural survival of indigenous cultures by resisting oil, gas and mining companies that attempt to colonize some of the last great ecosystems left on the planet Peleke Flores Peleke Flores was born in Hilo, Hawai‘i, and raised in Waimea, Kaua‘i. He is a 2001 graduate of Waimea High School and attended Kapiolani Community College in the Pre-Travel Industry Management Program then transferred to UH Manoa taking up Hawaiian Language and Hawaiian Studies with a special focus on Mālama ‘Āina (Caring for Traditional Hawaiian food systems). He has dedicated over 20 years of his career working and volunteering for ‘Āina Based Non-Profit Organizations and family farms. He served as the Kū Hou Kuapā Coordinator at Paepae o Heʻeia on the Ko'olaupoko district of Oʻahu where a 88 acre 800 year old fishpond is located. His knowledge of mālama ‘āina practices and dry stack wall-building were of great value in the restoration of this sacred space. Peleke currently works for Mālama Hulēʻia where his ʻike and expertise are integral in restoring this wahi pana including the 40 acre, 600-year-old Alakoko fishpond. He is experienced in Traditional Hale Building, Uhau Humu Pohaku (hawaiian dry set), and restoring traditional Hawaiian food systems such as lo'i kalo, lo'i pa'akai, and loko i'a. Host Tiffani Patton Tiffani is a lifelong “foodie” turned activist, writing and researching food system change for more than seven years. A gifted writer and storyteller, she leads several areas of educational programming, communications strategy, engagement, and internal operations at Real Food Media. This episode is a little love letter to wai in commemorating World Water Day 2022, this year's theme being “Making the Invisible, Visible” with a focus on groundwater to highlight the urgent need to protect it, which comes at a time of great relevance and reverence for us here in Hawaiʻi. Almost all of our liquid freshwater is groundwater, supporting drinking water supplies, sanitation systems, farming, industry and ecosystems. In some places, we simply do not know how much water is down there. But what we do know is that our groundwater and aquifers are essential to our lives and will continue to play a central role in our survival, adapting to the climate crisis and ongoing destabilization to come. But we created this episode to recharge our spirits by amplifying the beautiful connection that we have to wai and one another with mele (song), and mo'olelo (story). We did a little callout and have a diverse set of wahine sharing a piece of themselves with us. The order of the pieces will be: "Flow of Life" by Anna Chua who is the Red Hill organizer at the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi and member of this podcast team with a soul awakening poem about water as life, warrior, and leader of resistance. Followed by Estrella Marin- Ethnic Studies Major at UH Manoa and scuba diver honoring her place of solace and solitude with “Mother Ocean”. Next is powerhouse lawyer, mother, and advocate Rachel James share an empowering story, “Wai-We Gotta Talk About It”, that confronts the years of disconnected thought forced upon wai and one another. And last but not least we finish with epic beats from ʻIhilani Lasconia- Native Hawaiian student, artist, and organizer with Hui Aloha ʻĀina and Af3irm Hawaiʻi gifting us with conscious hip hop, inspiring us to come together to liberate wai, ʻāina, and ourselves- titled “Ola i ka Wai.” Photo credit: Jong Marshes
