The fifty-state road trip leaves the asphalt behind for the first time and boards a plane bound for Honolulu, because the next stop sits twenty-five hundred miles out in the Pacific where the Trailhunter can't follow. Hawaii doesn't fit the usual formula of trail cameras and footprint casts, and this episode says so up front. The Menehune and the Night Marchers aren't cryptids in the Bigfoot sense. They come out of a living Hawaiian religious and cultural tradition that was already ancient when Captain Cook arrived in seventeen seventy-eight, and for many island families they aren't folklore at all but family history. So the field-researcher hat comes off and the guest hat goes on, and the episode treats these islands the way a guest should.he first half belongs to the Menehune, the small people of the valleys. We stand above the Alekoko Fishpond on Kauai, where a chief and his sister were turned to stone for spying on a night's construction they were forbidden to watch, and we walk the Menehune Ditch at Waimea, the cut-and-dressed stonework that genuinely puzzles archaeologists because it doesn't match anything else in the islands. From there we weigh the anthropology honestly, including the Tahitian word manahune for a landless commoner and the theory that the legend preserves the memory of a displaced first-wave people pushed into the back valleys, alongside the competing view that the magical little-people version flowered after European contact. The file closes with the detail that stays with you: the eighteen-twenties census of Kauai that reportedly recorded sixty-five people in Wainiha Valley under the single word Menehune. The second half turns to the huaka'i po, the Night Marchers, and the rules that island families hand down like instructions about riptides. The processions of the warrior dead follow the old paths and do not go around what gets built across them, which is why some homes were designed with an open breezeway from mountain side to ocean side.If you hear the drums, you do not look, you get off the path and lie face down, and if your own blood marches in that column, a voice may call out Na'u — mine — and let you live. Six accounts carry the weight: forty schoolchildren at Waimea watching small powerful figures play in the trees in broad daylight; a nineteen-fifties road crew whose equipment refused to run until the cut was moved; two boys fishing Ka'ena Point who went down on the sand while a torchlit procession passed close enough to make the grains jump; a young couple stalled on the Old Pali Road, ground a battle in seventeen ninety-five turned into a mass grave that surfaced again as eight hundred skulls during road construction in eighteen ninety-eight; a Waianae grandmother who stood and chanted her family's names while the marchers came through the house; and a United States Army squad that lay face down in their own training area on the orders of a local platoon sergeant. The episode lands on two stories with documentation behind them. Interstate H-three, roughly thirty-seven years and one point three billion dollars to push sixteen miles through Halawa Valley over disputed heiau sites, built only after an act of Congress exempted it from the preservation laws that govern every other road in America. And Honokahua on Maui, where excavation for a luxury hotel uncovered close to a thousand ancient burials, where the Hawaiian community rose up until the resort was moved inland and the ancestors reinterred, and where the outrage produced the burial-protection laws that govern every construction project in the state today. The throughline holds both traditions together: some places don't want to be disturbed, and the islands aren't hostile so much as owned. Visit as a guest, stay on the trail, leave the stones where they sit, and if you ever hear a drum in the dark where no drum should be, you know the procedure.Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? Most people think making yourself a priority means saying yes to more of what you want. Dr. Matt is back in Waimea with a follow-up to last week, and this one goes a level deeper. In this episode, Dr. Matt builds on last week's conversation about making yourself a priority, introducing the Eisenhower Matrix and the two types of procrastination most people never recognize. You'll learn: The two types of procrastination, and why the second one is harder to catch How the Eisenhower Matrix helps you sort what only you can do from what should be delegated Why staying busy in the wrong area is its own form of avoidance How to identify what truly requires your time and what should be handed off Making yourself a priority is the first step. Season 15 of The Temple of Surf Podcast begins with an extraordinary episode featuring legendary surf photographer Patrick Eichstaedt, known around the world simply as Tupat. For decades, Tupat has been one of the key visual storytellers of surf culture, documenting some of the most iconic moments and personalities ever seen in the sport. From his early years growing up in Florida to eventually finding himself immersed in the powerful and unforgiving energy of Hawaii's North Shore, Patrick "Tupat" Eichstaedt witnessed surfing history unfold directly through his lens. In this exclusive opening episode of Season 15, we explore Tupat's personal journey into surf photography, the evolution of surf culture through the decades, and the unforgettable experiences he lived while documenting one of the most influential eras in modern surfing history, the rise of Andy Irons, Bruce Irons and Sunny Garcia on Hawaii's legendary North Shore. This was not simply competitive surfing. This was a cultural movement. The North Shore during those years represented intensity, progression, raw power and authenticity. Pipeline, Backdoor, Sunset Beach and Waimea became the stage where some of the most fearless surfers on Earth pushed the limits of what was possible in heavy waves. Tupat was there for all of it, capturing moments that today are part of surfing mythology. Throughout the episode, Tupat shares incredible behind-the-scenes stories from life on the North Shore, discussing the atmosphere in Hawaii during that generation and the personalities that shaped the sport forever. His photographs helped define the visual identity of surfing during a transformative period, appearing in magazines, editorial projects and surf media around the world. What makes this episode even more special is that Tupat personally allowed The Temple of Surf Podcast to feature rare and unique archival video materials directly on our YouTube channel. These are authentic historical moments from one of surfing's most important eras, offering viewers an opportunity to experience the energy and emotion of the North Shore in a way that few people ever could. For surf fans, historians, photographers and lovers of ocean culture, this episode is a true journey through time. Beyond the famous names and legendary waves, Tupat speaks about the human side of surf culture, friendship, risk, creativity, respect for the ocean and the deep connection between photographers and surfers in the water. We also discuss how surf photography has evolved over the years, from film cameras and water housings to the digital era and social media explosion. Tupat reflects on what has been gained and what may have been lost in modern surf culture, while reminding us why authentic storytelling and real moments still matter today. This conversation captures the soul of surfing: early mornings on the North Shore, massive winter swells, the tension in the lineup at Pipeline, the dedication required to document dangerous waves, and the passion that drives surfers and photographers alike to keep chasing unforgettable moments in the ocean. If you are passionate about surf history, Hawaiian surf culture, legendary photographers, vintage North Shore energy and the generation that changed surfing forever, this episode is absolutely not to be missed. Aloha, and welcome to a truly historic moment! Today we celebrate Show 700 of the Hawaiian Concert Guide. Reaching 700 episodes is often referred to as a "Golden Milestone" in broadcasting. It signifies excellence, resilience, and a legacy that has stood the test of time. To honor this occasion, we've assembled a playlist that spans the spectrum of the Hawaiian sound—from sacred ancestral chants to the whimsical "Hapa Haole" revival. The Legacy of the Land: Gregory Juan We open our 700th celebration with Gregory Juan, an artist whose work from the album Kauluwehi serves as a bridge between past and present. 'O Waimea e Hōʻala: This powerful opening track was written by Gregory's grandfather, the late cultural advocate Charles Kauluwehi Maxwell Sr. It is a tribute to the sacred ahupua‘a of Waimea, Maui, serving as an "awakening" song that reminds us of our ancestral ties to the land. Pua Melie: A beloved classic by Aunty Edith Kanaka‘ole. While the melie (plumeria) is beautiful to the eye, the song's deeper kauna (hidden meaning) honors the harmony of voices in the Keaukaha community. Modern Vibrations: Kamalei Kawaa Next, we feature the soulful, award-winning sounds of Kamalei Kawaa from his album Mānaiakalani. Hānaulā (feat. Kainani Kahaunaele): A masterful collaboration celebrating the mountainous beauty of West Maui. The interplay between Kamalei and the legendary Kainani Kahaunaele is a highlight of contemporary Hawaiian vocal arrangement. Ku'u Aloha: A tender track that showcases Kamalei's signature falsetto. It is a song of pure affection, bridging the love between people and the ‘āina. The Spirit of Slack Key: Kawika Kahiapo It wouldn't be Show 700 without the rhythmic grace of Kawika Kahiapo. Pule: Featuring an oration by Kumu Hula Chinky Mahoe, this track is a profound moment of prayer and gratitude. It is the perfect spiritual "center" for our milestone episode. In Living Color: This track features the "3D" collaboration (Del Beazley, David Kahiapo, and Dwight Kanae), offering a bright, jazz-influenced celebration of the vibrant life in the islands today. Special Feature: The French Exotica Revival A major highlight of this episode is our exclusive interview with the French Exotica band, Les Waikikings. We had a fantastic time chatting with them about their passion for the "Hapa Haole" sound and how a group from France became masters of this vintage island genre. Their perspective on the global influence of Hawaiian music is fascinating, and their dedication to the "twist" on traditional styles is truly inspiring. Te manu pukarua: A high-energy Polynesian classic reimagined with shimmering steel guitars and lush percussion. Native Love: A haunting, atmospheric piece that captures the dreamlike, escapist spirit of the 1950s "Golden Age" of Exotica. The Foundation: Ho'okena We close our 700th show with the unmistakable harmonies of Ho'okena, whose work from the album Ho'okena 5 remains a pillar of the genre. From a Dancer: A stunning Hawaiian-style cover of the Jackson Browne classic. Ho'okena turns this folk-rock masterpiece into a beautiful island tribute to the cycle of life. Windward Side: A nostalgic "love letter" to the Windward coast of O‘ahu. It captures the trade winds and the mist on the Koolau mountains, ending our 700th episode on a note of pure, graceful Aloha. Mahalo for being part of the first 700 shows. Here's to the next 700!

Born in 1937, Mickey Muñoz moved from New York to Los Angeles at age six, started surfing at age 10, and swiftly found Malibu's First Point. He became one of the top surfers out there, and made friends with the regulars—Joe Quigg, Matt Kivlin, Miki Dora. Muñoz eventually moved to Hawaii, where he rode Waikiki and worked restaurant jobs to get by. He soon found his way out to the North Shore, which was a new frontier at the time, becoming part of the pioneering crew at Waimea Bay. Muñoz appeared in the new Surfer magazine in 1960, riding at Malibu with Dora and Mike Doyle, all three on the same board, as well as doing the first ever "Quasimoto," a head dip with the front arm aimed forward. Muñoz competed in and won contests, among them the Tom Morey Invitational noseriding event, in 1965, for which the prize was a whopping $750. He shaped surfboards for Hobie, got deep into sailing and catamarans, and brought what he'd learned on the open seas to wave-riding and board design. He wrote a memoir, No Bad Waves: Talking Story with Mickey Muñoz, published in 2011. But Muñoz's legacy is as much about simply living and perpetuating the joy of the surfing life as it is about benchmarks or achievements. And he's still doing it, at age 87. In this episode of Soundings, Muñoz talks with Jamie Brisick about Malibu's golden age, experimenting with shorter boards, early days on the North Shore, riding Waimea, modern performance surfing, riding waves into his eighties, and Miki Dora. Parents who raised concerns about what they say is a dangerous school bus stop near Nelson have been told most of their children dont qualify for the free ride. Some students have to cross the busy 100km/h state highway 60 near Mapua to get to the bus, something parents believe is an accident waiting to happen. They asked for the Ministry of Education to move the stop one kilometre up the road, to a safer area for kids taking the bus to Waimea and Garin colleges in Richmond. Since then one of the schools has told families the Ministry is looking at taking most of the students off the free school bus service because they dont actually qualify for it. Sarah Taylor, a mum of two who's been leading the charge to change the bus route, spoke to Lisa Owen.

Júlio Adler, João Valente e Bruno Bocayuva ouvem calados a aula do professor Valdir.
A trilha festiva traz Thievery Corporation com The Richest Man In Babylon, Slim Dunlap com Ballad of the opening band, e House Band com I Saw House Band In Hollywood. Feliz Navidad!

Darrick Doerner is a big-wave surfer, tow-surfing pioneer, Hollywood stuntman, and former North Shore lifeguard. He grew up surfing in the LA area in the 1960s and '70s, moved to Hawaii his senior year of high school, and discovered himself joyous and at peace in heavy water. Hungry for waves too big to catch manually, Doerner and his pals Laird Hamilton and Buzzy Kerbox started experimenting with personal watercraft assists in the early 1990s. Not long after, they began towing into Peahi, aka Jaws. In Hollywood, Doerner stunt-doubled for Bodhi, Patrick Swayze's character, in 1991's Point Break, and appeared as a stunt surfer in the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day. In this episode of Soundings, Doerner and Jamie Brisick talk about the allure of Sunset Beach, his memorable ride at Waimea on Super Bowl Sunday in 1988, friendship, the importance of being attuned to your environment, drawing lines on giant waves, and working with Eddie Aikau.

Thank you so much for your patience while I've been working on Season 3 as I've dealt with some pretty rough stuff in my personal life (womp womp lol) and I apologize for the delay! But now we're back in business! The theme for tonight's episode was one I've been wanting to cover ever since season 1, so I'm excited to finally be able to share it with you all! The topic: The Giants of Old Hawaii. Legends of Giants have been part of Hawaiian folklore for centuries. In this Season 3 premiere, I'll be discussing several of the giant-themed stories I found that were based in Hawaii, along with a few tales from around the world that share eerily similar details. Later in the episode, I'll dive into a discovery found at a construction site on Hawaii Island that may change how we view Hawaiian mythology, while also bringing up the question; were Hawaii's giants actually part of Hawaiian history? So crack open a green bottle, spark up some paranormal pakalolo.... and let's get into this! Hawaii is no stranger to extravagant homes owned by the super-rich. But when a tech billionaire started buying up land in Waimea, a small, rural town on the Big Island, the community got curious - and worried. Locals fear it will become even more difficult for Native Hawaiians to afford to live in Waimea and buy property. In Hawaii, the average home price is close to a million dollars. Who's purchasing all this land in rural Hawaii and how will it affect the already high cost of housing in Waimea? For sponsor-free episodes of Consider This, sign up for Consider This+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

The long-delayed Waimea Dam in the Tasman Distrcit isn't finished or full, but local growers are likely to want to take water from it in the dry months ahead. It was hoped the $198 million dam would be full in time for summer to provide water security and reduce the need for water restrictions. But it's already more than two years behind schedule - and now the dry weather could push that out even further. Samantha Gee reports.

One of the shortboard revolution's seminal figures and a Pipeline pioneer, Jock Sutherland hails from a family of watermen: His mother swam the northern coast of the island of Molokai, a journey which she later detailed in her 1978 book, Paddling My Own. His father, a World War II navy officer, was a seasoned kayaker, fisherman, and surfer. Sutherland and his family moved to Hawaii from Long Beach, California in 1952, where he learned to surf on one of his father's old planks. He began riding for Greg Noll as a teenager, and went on to place second at both the 1965 Makaha International Junior Surfing Championships and the Ocean Beach World Contest in 1966. In 1967, he won the Duke Invitational. In 1969, he won Surfer magazine's Surfer of the Year award. In 1970, he left surfing to join the US Army at the height of Vietnam. At 74, surfing remains an integral part of Sutherland's day to day life. In this episode of Soundings, Sutherland sits down with show host Jamie Brisick to talk about turning points in surfing's evolution, living with Jeff Hakman in Maui, the psychedelic resurgence, why he enlisted in the Army, being incarcerated for drug smuggling, myth-busting, and Waimea's mechanics.

Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. As a child, Bill lived on the north shore of Oahu and was invited to surf Waimea Bay. He was brave enough to paddle out but then talked himself out of every wave as it came along. He was lit up by the bold audacity of being able to say he had surfed these famous waves, even though he never actually caught a wave. Being bold can also mean being frightened. There is power in going for what you really want. A BHAG (big hairy, audacious goal) is not a small thing, it's a thing that is meant to frighten you into action! Of course, there is a balance between ridiculous and extraordinary, but when you strike that balance, you will find success. Being scared (in a good way) is key to powerful boldness that inspires.
