Arnold has to face his on-again off-again crush on Lila once and for all when he starts getting attention from an unexpected source: Gerald's little sister! “Timberly Loves Arnold” is a bit all over the place (didn't we close the book on #LilArnold? Why's Gerald so absent? Why's Sid gotta be so creepy?), but it does get the Kidz a bit nostalgic for the social awkwardness of childhood crushes and sibling tag-alongs. Timberly's good people. “Eugene, Eugene!” dramatizes the relationships among the kids of P.S. 118 when theater director (and Mr. Simmons's archrival) Mr. Leichliter brings a production of the titular stage play to the school. Spurned by a former love, Leichliter changes the ending of the play so the bad guy (Arnold) gets the girl (Lila) – and long-suffering Eugene won't stand for it. In our discussion, we talk about the framing of narratives as school play, how inconsequential Helga is, and how cool Tim Curry is. Would you give up on a 16 year old kid for life? The Judge gave Bobby Bostic a sentence of 241 years in prison without the possibility for parole until he was 112 years old. Bobby was an accomplice in two armed robberies. Judge Evelyn Baker sentenced him to die in prison without giving him an official life sentence. If he had been given a life sentence he would have been eligible for parole after 25 years. Judge Baker said, "your mandatory date to go in front of the parole board will be 2201. Nobody in this room will be alive in the year 2201." A very dark statement, that Judge Baker later regretted. She began to do research about the brain of a teenager and when it is fully developed. The Judge became an advocate for Bostic's release. She was the first person he hugged 27 years later when he was released. A lot had to happen before that release. Laws had to change. In 2010, The Supreme Court mandated parole hearings for juveniles that were sentenced to life without parole. The problem was that ruling did not apply to Bobby because the way he was sentenced was multiple offenses that added up to life. He fell into a legal loophole. The failed appeal before the Supreme Court was argued by Ken Starr, Sally Yates, with the support of 100 plus law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and former judges. The Missouri law was changed in 2021 that gave Bostic an opportunity of a parole hearing. In those 27 years of prison, Bobby reformed into a model prisoner. He wrote seven books on his typewriter. He wrote letters to people and sought funding for his college education. And like in the movie "Shawshank Redemption," he built a fully stocked library with the help of St. Louis Public Libraries. Again, after several letters seeking help. Bobby was released November of 2022. Bobby says, "I want to be a mentor and teach young people to take a different path than I did when I was a young child myself." Bobby Bostic books (Amazon), Dear Mama, A Generation Misunderstood, Life Goes On In Prison, Mental Jewelry, Mind Diamonds, When Life Gives You Lemons make Lemonade, and Endless Moments In Prison.

Even the best savers can run out of money in retirement. In this episode of the One for the Money podcast, I share how making the appropriate adjustments in the few years before and after retirement can help prevent that. In the tips, tricks, and strategy portion, I'll share information for those who started saving later for early retirement. Listen to learn more! In this episode...Into thin air [01:51] Sequence of returns risk [03:30] The years before retirement [11:32] The bucket strategy [13:09] Saving late for early retirement [16:43] Climbing down carefullyWhile the most common accident in mountain climbing is falling, the majority of those incidents occur on the way down from the peak. People put so much physical and mental energy into making it to the pinnacle that they don't take the necessary precautions on the way down. Think of your approaching retirement as submitting your financial Mount Everest. Taking withdrawals from your retirement investments is like climbing down, which requires even more precautions. The mistakes made after retirement can be costly, and unlike when someone is younger, they don't have the time or salary to overcome these mistakes. One of retirees' biggest fears is running out of money. This shortage can happen for many reasons, including negative returns in the first few years before and just after retirement. Another significant risk is inflation. Strategies need to be deployed to address both of these risks. Before and after retirementThe rate of return in the first few years of retirement significantly impacts how money lasts throughout retirement. Similarly, the rate of returns in the years before retirement makes a huge difference. So what can you do to retire on time without running out of money? We can't predict the future rates of return, and we can't know if the stock market will be up or down. Some might think a good strategy is to be conservative in investments. However, that would also mean slowing growth and not keeping up with inflation. For my clients nearing or in retirement, I employ a bucket strategy. The monies to be withdrawn in the near term are invested more conservatively. Monies to be withdrawn in the next 6-15 years are invested more moderately. Finally, monies that will be withdrawn beyond that timeframe are invested more towards growth or a higher percent allocated to stocks. Strategies around retirementIn the bucket strategy, the ultimate determining factor for each bucket is the action of the market, the individual client's spending goals, and their tolerance for risk. The logic behind the strategy is that money spent in the near term shouldn't be impacted by large swings in the market. Monies spent further in the future have the potential for increased growth to provide future income and offset the effects of inflation. While the bucket strategy works well for those who completely stop working, another approach would be retiring slowly by reducing work hours before leaving the workforce. This situation would result in less reliance on income generated from an investment portfolio and create a smoother transition from a full-time job to a life without work responsibilities. A flexible or dynamic budget can be helpful to make withdrawals less in down years. Delaying Social Security to increase monthly benefits can also reduce reliance on income generated from a portfolio. These and similar approaches aim to match assets, liabilities, and time horizons as best as possible. Welcome Back! Today, 2/3 of the Wild Women are joined by the host of When Life Gives You Lemons podcast, Sam Brinkman, to discuss Religious Trauma? What is religious trauma? Religious or spiritual trauma is a form of psychological abuse and brainwashing that inculcates the shameful message that we are sinful and must live in a constant state of penance and atonement to escape the ravages of hell and God's punishment. Join us to dive into how purity culture is basically JV r*pe culture, how church camp is glorified matchmaking where 16-19 year old males are "courting" 13-15 year old females, and how women and men have very different standards by which to live AND – shocker – that men rarely deal with consequences from their actions. Then, in a sharp turn, Nikole gives us our weekly astro update with some interesting points coming up for everyone. In the second episode, I discuss Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), or potentially traumatic life events that occur in childhood (0-17 years.) The assessment for ACEs, located in the resource page of the podcast site at: https://whenlifegivesyoulemonspodcast.wordpress.com/resources/, can help conceptualize the trauma you may have experienced as a child. Have you ever noticed how cruel life can be? Like when everything seems to be going really well and you feel on top of the world and then within the blink of an eye everything changes? If it hasn't for you, it's because you're either lying or you're dead. This podcast chronicles one incredibly difficult day for a young female athlete named Abby. Abby's life was going to plan and everything seemed right until she suffered a complete rupture of her Achilles tendon in a soccer game. In that moment, life took a painful step backwards. The physical and emotional toll that the injury and rehabilitation inflicted upon her was unprecedented. Although she struggled, she relied on faith and family to provide perspective. In Abby's words, life's challenges happen for us not to us. She shares many intimate feelings about her own existence during a time when she felt helpless. What initially appeared to be a catastrophic event, eventually became another one of life's incredible vignettes. Perhaps her story will inspire you. It has certainly had an inspirational effect upon me. The post DIP Episode #46: When Life Gives You Lemons… appeared first on Dr. Peter Percuoco.

Covid 19 is a virus that has devastated more than just health. Our jobs, our way of life have all been totally upended. If you're feeling confused, and maybe even paralyzed over all the turmoil in our world right now, then my podcast guest, pastor and author Gerald Fadayomi has some practical guidance to help you chart these uncertain waters and plot a course to move ahead. Whether its an unexpected job loss, the death of a loved one or a difficult diagnosis from our doctor, in his new book, "When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade," Gerald teaches us techniques for taking action in our own lives, using the example set by the biblical hero, Joseph. Gerald points out how the Bible never guarantees our lives will be free from suffering, however it DOES show us a way to deal with the uncomfortable - or as he calls them, "sour" - circumstances. By asking yourself just three simple questions, and then spending some time prayerfully answering them, you can more clearly discern the path God has planned for you. Gerald helped me to realize we are not as powerless as we sometimes feel, we just have to ask the right questions for our situation. Reach Gerald at - https://www.geraldfadayomi.com/lemons

WARNING: I recorded this interview on my phone due an SD card issue. The audio quality is dicey. The chat itself though? Awesome. Slug even recorded an intro for this one!On this episode of The Curator Podcast I spoke with legendary rapper, and one of the founders of Rhymesayers Records, Sean ‘Slug' Daley from Atmosphere. It was an interview that almost didn't happen. We all make mistakes, right? If I listen to some past episodes I can hear my mistakes quite clearly, but at least I recorded those interviews. I almost didn't get a chance to record this one. After a work trip to London, whereby I'd recorded some people talking at a conference, I arrived home and threw together last week's podcast (the one with B. Dolan). I then booked this interview with Slug, and I couldn't have been more excited.I rolled up to the venue on time and was led through The Garage's labyrinthine backstage area into a nice room with two couches massive leather couches and of course, Slug. I sat down, pulled out my microphone, the Zoom H6 recorder that I use for all of my recording and my headphones. I turned the recorder on and my heart sank: 'No SD Card Present'.In the last blog post I briefly chronicled my “hip hop journey". While it did indeed begin with ‘A Healthy Distrust' by Sage Francis in 2005, that year I also came across ‘You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having' by Atmosphere. So you could say that the tide turned for me after hearing those two records.I've been a fan of Atmosphere ever since, and talking to Slug was a momentous occasion for me (and hopefully for this podcast). So you can imagine how I felt when I realised that I had no SD card in my recorder.I told Slug about my stupidity and he suggested using my phone. I pulled out my iPad to check my questions only to find I had no mobile signal backstage and thus no way to access my questions…We looked through my iPad for the voice recorder app - it was conspicuous in its absence. In the end, we used my phone and I just did my best to try and remember all the questions I'd written down. The resulting interview is shorter than I'd have liked, but a lot of time was taking up by trying to find a solution to the various problems I had. Is it possible to look less professional than I did that day? It seems unlikely. In the end though, we had a cracking conversation that went in a couple of unexpected directions. We lingered a little more on Slug's creativity than I expected, which was ace. I had a bunch of questions about Rhymesayers that I just couldn't remember, yet the insights he gives are utterly fascinating and absolutely made the hassle worth it.Highlights include:*Getting more sleep on the road than at home*Rhmyesayers being 20 and how Slug doesn't really reflect on their legacy because he's so focused on what his community are doing*The search for the perfect song*How to know when you've written that perfect song and how close Atmosphere have come to it*Being more an introspective lyricist…*But also appearing to be even more introspective when writing about fictional characters like on ‘When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint that Shit Gold'*The dichotomy of how being an artist who makes art for a living can be both fun and a curse because of how dependent people get on having to make art to make ends meet*Slug embraces that dependency as part of his relationship to music*“Just because people might like a song or two I've made has no bearing on how I see myself”*The importance of having passion*How passion and hunger has changed the longer Atmosphere have been doing this*Some Prince chat and the “genius” of Prince's Batman recordAfterwards Slug showed me out and he went to speak to the fans in the queue outside the venue. I've never saw an artist do that before whilst I've been in their company. It was very fucking cool. Slug is one of the nicest and most intelligent dudes I've interviewed on this podcast and I could have spoken to him for hours about his craft. And of course, later that night Atmosphere absolutely crushed it. I love seeing hip hop live, it's a concert experience unlike anything else.Maybe next time I'll chat to Ant. I hope you enjoy this episode.Featured MusicIntro: Voodoo Puppets – Electric Chair Blues (used under CC licence, you can check it out here).Atmosphere - Pour Me Another (Another Poor Me)Atmosphere - Fortune'Pour Me Another' can be found on the album You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having.'Fortune' is on the latest official Atmosphere album Southsiders.
