Before the success, before the tours, and before the platform, Melissa was the one carrying the financial weight of their household while Kev pursued stand-up comedy full time. She talks honestly about what it felt like to be the responsible one, why she chose not to weaponize money in their relationship, and how they built trust without keeping score. Together, they unpack the mindset that has shaped their marriage for years: if one person fails, both people fail. If one person wins, both people win. We also talk about resentment in long-term relationships, navigating major life transitions like perimenopause, giving your partner room to evolve, and why some of the choices that strengthened their marriage would look completely irrational to other couples. This episode challenges modern ideas around independence, partnership, sacrifice, gender roles, and what it actually means to build a life with someone instead of simply alongside them. If you've ever wondered what real partnership looks like behind the scenes, or questioned whether you'd actually be willing to make the sacrifices required for the kind of love you admire, this conversation is for you. This week on The Sidebar Podcast, Leise Winny and Royce move through culture, politics, and identity with their signature mix of humor and real talk — all from a Black millennial POV that doesn't shy away from uncomfortable questions.Leise opens the show with a wide-ranging check-in that jumps from war updates to sports and entertainment. From the NFL Draft, to LeBron and the Lakers, to ongoing conversations around Stefon Diggs, the episode blends headlines with hot takes. Leise leads a powerful and layered segment on Black women and the “ride or die” myth, unpacking the pressure to stay loyal at all costs — even when it becomes dangerous. That naturally opens the door to one of the most complex cultural debates: the N-word. Who can say it? Should it still be used at all? And how has Gen Z reshaped its meaning — from something rooted in history to something that's often used casually or performatively?Royce brings his perspective into the mix, pushing the conversation toward how culture, perception, and personal responsibility collide in real time. The final major segment tackles a conversation that continues to spark debate: Black people and conservative views. Using recent backlash toward KevOnStage as a jumping-off point, the hosts explore how political and social beliefs are policed within the community — and what happens when someone steps outside expected norms, especially around topics like sexuality and identity. The episode closes with a recap and final reflections that tie everything together — culture, accountability, identity, and the constant negotiation between personal belief and public expectation.

KevOnStage is catching heat from the Christian Community for what seems like radical views. It raises the debate on the church communities' values, traditions, and practices. The Student Section pulled up with questions and opinions on sin and sexuality. The Lt. Gov Justin Fairfax and his wife Cerina's situation left behind many questions for family, friends, and political allies to find answers without them. This has started some conversations around the country as well. Specifically, the question around men's mental health and whether or patriarchy is playing a part in any of it. WrestleFaith pulled up to share her own personal experiences with Domestic Violence and how she escaped a 17 year relationship. #KevOnStage #ChritianLove #JustinFairfax #DomesticViolence #ReligiousDebate

This episode? Yeah… we let the questions fly. We're answering everything from the easy stuff to the ones that had us looking at each other like “wait… what?”
Listen up, culture. We need to think more on who and why we're canceling so many people and situations. At this point, we're going to run out of people and things to cancel. Crowned ReRe and Mr. Al Pete are over canceling retail stores, actors, singers, and...everyone for that matter. Where does it stop?!?!*laughs*...with that, ReRe and Pete take this episode to go through a few circumstances where someone has been canceled...for a/all ridiculous reasons. They took the Cactus segment and made it the main section! Now, they also give their traditional Black Joy and A Rose is a Rose moments, but baybeeeehhh...they had to make it known about a few questionable cancellations. So culture...get rid of the stale bread and enjoy the show *laughs*!Stay connected and keep the flowers blooming. Chrystal Renee welcomes KevOnStage to talk about how humor helps him tell the truth and cope in real life, especially through his one-man show “Grief Sucks,” inspired by losing his brother. He explains that comedy can help people hear hard things, “People can listen, are more open to listening if you’ve made them laugh”—and admits jokes are part of how he processes grief, even when it’s messy and too soon. Kev also gets real about boundaries and burnout (why he stopped meet-and-greets), parenting two very different sons, and what he’s learned in 22 years of marriage—like how you can “do hurt and harm with good intention,” and how marriage requires staying updated, “like being up to date on your cell phone.” Biggest takeaway: growth is ongoing, and Kev is choosing to be “unapologetically me,” even if everyone won’t like it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today, I'm diving into Rewrite Your Rules by Morgan DeBaun, the brilliant CEO and founder of Blavity. If you've been following the show a while, you'll remember that I featured Morgan in last year's February/Black History Month daily podcast challenge (linked below). Since then, I've been following her newsletter on Substack, and it's been such a joy to read her perspectives and learnings as she leads one of the most important media companies focused on Black culture and millennials. In this chapter, A Purposeful Life: Simple, Not Easy, Morgan breaks down what it really means to live with purpose. The title says it all—living purposefully is simple in concept, but it's definitely not easy in practice. Purpose isn't something you find once and you're done—it's something you continuously refine and recommit to. The simplicity comes from knowing what matters most to you; the difficulty comes from actually making the hard choices to align your life with those values. Morgan shares personal stories about pivotal moments in building Blavity and how she had to make tough decisions that didn't always feel comfortable but were aligned with her purpose. Living purposefully often means saying no to good opportunities so you can say yes to the right onesWhat really resonated with me is how Morgan emphasizes that you don't need to have everything figured out. You just need to be intentional about the direction you're moving in and be willing to course-correct along the way. If you're an entrepreneur, a creative, or anyone trying to build something meaningful, this chapter (and this whole book) is a must-read.More Episodes to Explore:How Morgan DeBaun Raised $12M to build Blavity: https://www.honeyandhustle.co/how-morgan-debaun-raised-12m-to-build-blavity-home-of-shadow-and-act-afrotech/Successful Failure by KevOnStage: https://www.honeyandhustle.co/i-read-a-chapter-of-successful-failure-by-kevin-fredericks-kevonstage/Thanks for listening! Kevin Fredericks, better known as KevOnStage, shares with Sarah Jakes Roberts how a potential failure resulted in success following his game-changing strategy. With pre-orders low but audacity at an all-time high, Kev shows: if at first you don't succeed, dust yourself off and try again. Together, they explore resilience—asking, is it something you're born with, or something you evolve into? We ain't gone hold you, this episode had us rolling! But if fear's got you playing small and your faith needs a little deconstructing, lock in. This is your kind of carrying on!
In this episode, I'm diving into Successful Failure by Kevin Fredericks (KevOnStage), specifically the chapter "Where Hoop Dreams Go to Die." Successful Failure by Kevin Fredericks is a New York Times bestseller that explores how flops, failures, and detours can actually pave the way to real success. Kevin shares his journey with humor and honesty, making it a must-read for anyone who's ever felt like they've "failed" at their original dream. The chapter chronicles the start of his personal journey from aspiring athlete to finding his true calling in comedy and content creation. He shares the pressure of athletic expectations and the identity crisis that can follow when those paths close. The skills and discipline from pursuing one dream can transfer to another path in surprising ways. We can debate if KevOnStage is funny all day, but we can't deny that he is an incredible storyteller. You may also enjoy I Hope You Fail by Pinky Cole: https://www.honeyandhustle.co/i-read-a-chapter-of-i-hope-you-fail-by-pinky-cole-for-you/Here's an article I wrote featuring motivational quotes from KevOnStage: https://www.pleasehustleresponsibly.com/p/motivation-monday-kevonstage-editionThanks for listening! Comedian, entrepreneur, and cultural favorite KevOnStage sits down with hosts Deborah Joy Winans Williams and MAJOR. for a wildly funny and surprisingly heartfelt holiday conversation on Choosing Joy for the Holidays. From broke-era Christmases to the infamous Batman-without-the-Batman gift, Kev shares stories that shaped his childhood — and why those moments still make him laugh today. Kev opens up about what the holidays were like growing up with very little, including years when presents were missing, sweaters were the wrong size, and his grandmother still made it all feel meaningful. He reflects on how becoming a father shifted everything, including why he eventually stopped giving his kids mountains of gifts and instead started taking annual Christmas trips around the world — this year, all the way to Japan. As a comedian who happens to be a Christian (and not the other way around), Kev breaks down how he navigates faith, comedy, and community without letting labels box him in. He shares outrageous stories about church life, roasting from the pews, and learning not to fear disappointing people — because, as he says, “I disappoint myself every day.” The episode closes with a rapid-fire holiday game featuring eggnog, NBA basketball vs. Christmas service, the best version of “This Christmas,” and which family member is absolutely spiking the eggnog. A hysterical, warm, relatable, culturally rich episode — everything Holiday AF was built for.Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/choosing-joy/id1826833726Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thechoosingjoypodcast/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@choosingjoythepodcastGo Premium: https://www.theblackguywhotips.com/premium/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Money couldn't motivate me because if you are led by money, your morals will be second….my morals come first and money is a bi-product of that. Fame is not fun.” KevOnStage We got a good one for you Pivot Family!! In this episode, Ryan, Channing and Fred sit down with comedian, entrepreneur, and creator Kevin Fredericks, known as KevOnStage, for an honest, hilarious, and heartfelt conversation about comedy, family, and carving your own lane in the entertainment industry. Kev opens up about his journey from church stages to digital stardom, the ups and downs of building a brand rooted in authenticity, and what it really means to balance faith, creativity, and business in today's world. He opens up about his relationship with his wife, Melissa, together since they were teens and still going strong almost 30 years later. Not always easy to navigate, Kev shares how he had to learn to be vulnerable and not keep emotions bundled up, especially losing his brother unexpectedly and how he was able to release his grief during dark times while finding peace in humor and faith. Turning the worst heartache of loss into laughter may be one way of coping with tragedy, but Kev prides himself on his roots and sense of community, never wavering on his beliefs to chase money. From viral sketches to building his own streaming platform, Kev shares the lessons he's learned along the way—and the moments that tested his belief in himself and how walking away from a steady job to move across country changed his trajectory. This conversation is filled with a lot of laughs, real talk, and wisdom on how to keep pivoting with purpose and always find a way to the other side.
