It's St. Patrick's Day, so Have You Ever Seen #652 gets into an IRA frame of mind, puts on some green and talks about John Ford's The Informer. The legendary director and leading man Victor McLaglen won Oscars, but the set-bound film itself lost out to the epic grandeur of Mutiny On The Bounty for Best Picture. McLaglen plays a pathetic liar who betrays and rats out a fellow Irishman to British authorities...and deals with his guilt (badly) by blowing all his blood money as soon as possible. So pour a Guinness, boyos & girlos and prepare for another Ryan monologue here in Oscar Month as the 90-year-old The Informer is on deck. Pour some Irish whiskey into your Sparkplug Coffee. Or don't. "Never apologize. It's a sign of weakness."We know we're quite a ways into 2025, but Happy New Year everyone. Anders & Adam Holmes are back with a new trilogies episode! On this episode, the Holmes Brothers hop on their horses and ride out west to Monument Valley. They again discuss and analyse three favourite westerns from their childhood, two of which they saw a lot on VHS (remember those?). The movie trilogy they are looking at on this episode is: John Ford's The Cavalry Trilogy. It includes Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Rio Grande (1950).All three films star John Wayne and feature regular members of Ford's acting troupe like Henry Fonda, John Agar, Harry Carey Jr, Ben Johnson, George O'Brien and Victor McLaglen. John Ford was very much in his mythical period when making these westerns. We hope you like this episode and do check out the films, if you have or haven't seen it. Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen in the western The Outlaws which is a available to watch in the US, Finland & the UK on Amazon and Apple TV for example. You can read a review about the film on Collider. Also check out Anders's reviews on Robert Eggers's Nosferatu, Die Hard 4.0 and The Crow (2024).Follow us on our Instagram page. The story of Gypo Nolan, a disgraced IRA man of war in 1920s British occupied Ireland and his willingness to sell out his comrade best friend for a small reward. Victor McLaglen gives an all-time great sweaty performance as Gypo and his descent into guilt, remorse and whiskey until atonement is the only option. You're a better podcaster than us, Michael Holland. That's right, the City of Angels' very own boy wonder is back to take Paul and Arlo to film school. The That Was Then classic gracing our screens this time is George Stevens' 1939 adventure film Gunga Din, starring Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. The gang discusses the film's connection to William Goldman, the subject of the first season of Michael's podcast From Out of the Past; why it represents a milestone in action-adventure cinema; its surprising, or refreshing, lack of plot; and why Paul and Arlo had such a hard time watching this 85-year-old film for the very first time. In 1953 Orson Welles met Italian actress Paola Mori. She was twenty-four, beautiful, and had lived for eight months in a concentration camp during World War II. Her father, a colonel in the Italian army under King Victor Emmanuel III, was a member of the anti-Mussolini resistance. They were soon dating. In early 1954, Welles played a small part as Benjamin Franklin in the French/Italian historical drama Royal Affairs in Versailles. Later in the year he was cast by director Herbert Wilcox as the main antagonist in Trouble In the Glen, opposite Margaret Lockwood, Forrest Tucker and Victor McLaglen. It portended things to come, as Harry Alan Towers was still producing a series of Sherlock Holmes radio adventures, starring John Gielgud as Holmes and Ralph Richardson as Watson. On December 21st, 1954, Orson Welles appeared as Holmes villain Professor Moriarity in the last production of the series. The tale was called “The Final Problem.”
Khwaja Ahmad Abbas feels insulted and anguished as he manages to read the scenario of Gunga Din, an American adventure film under production, which makes fun of Indians. Featuring Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Gunga Din is loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's poem. Abbas delivers a radio talk in Hollywood trashing such cinematic caricatures maligning India. Presented by broadcaster Pervaiz Alam, the Cineink series 'Musafir Ki Diary' is produced by Achala Sharma in association with the Delhi-based Khwaja Ahmad Abbas Memorial Trust.
For this episode, we invite you to come enjoy yourself in John Ford's quaint, quiet Irish village of Inisfree, an idealized version of Ireland - as long as your ideal involves chaotic drunken donnybrooks. Winner of two Oscars and nominated for seven, The Quiet Man blends romance with comedy with gorgeous, lush Irish countrysides as backdrop, and stars John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, and Victor McLaglen. It's a first time courtship for us with this film, so we ask of you, please, no patty fingers. >Direct Podcast RSS feed: here! > Contact: email, Facebook (movies, TV, games), and Twitter! > Check out The Media By Us Facebook Page too! > Review us on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or anywhere! > Intro theme courtesy of The Willow Walkers
In the fourth episode of Season 3, Manifest Destiny, Kyle is joined by composer Austin Howard and fellow critic Tyler Harlow (of the After the Credits blog) to discuss one of John Ford's complicated portrait of the face and humanity of the soldiers of the cavalry, their community, and their lost presence in the sacrifice of the American myth in Fort Apache
Miav!Steen og Teddy kaster et blik på "Women of All Nations". Raoul Walsh instruerede denne film efter floppet "The Big Trail" i 1931 - tre skridt frem, to skridt tilbage, må man sige.
This week Jeremy and Deana Marie take a trip back in time to the days of Technicolor as they watch and discuss John Ford's The Quiet Man, starring Maureen O'Hara, John Wayne, Barry Fitzgerald and Victor McLaglen. This film was a favorite of someone very special in Deana Marie's life so this episode has a little nostalgia, a lot of laughter, the usual throat punches and some deep discussion about the changes in how relationships are portrayed on screen today vs. 60+ years ago. There's also a very interesting discussion about Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure at the very end of the episode so be sure to stick around for that!
Joe asked for works of urban Ireland in honor of St. Patrick's Day! Amy chose Colin Bateman's Belfast thriller, Divorcing Jack. Randy selected the 1935 John Ford classic that won a Best Actor Oscar for Victor McLaglen and John Ford's first Best Director, The Informer. Show notes: Intro Music: "Tell Me Ma" by Gaelic Storm Outro Music: "James Connolly" by Black 47 Randy talks about The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and the new Madonna album, Rebel Heart. Joe's been watching The Last Five Years and is still working his way through Parks & Recreation. As for Irish politics, there was no Prime Minister of Ireland in 1995 so...hell, we have no idea. They haven't had one since 1972 when the Parliament was suspended (but they have a First Minister since 1998). The Nobel Prize Stearkey refers to in the novel would have been the one that Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan were awarded in 1976 for their work for a peaceful resolution to the violence in Northern Ireland. The Good Friday accords come three years later in 1998. Atoní Dvorák was indeed Czech and Béla Bartók was Hungarian. An example of the Spider-Verse newspaper strip can be found here. Linda Holmes form Pop Culture Happy Hour wrote the Bachelor Pad recap of lore, including the phrase "The Courtyard Of Abandoned Dignity." The Florida novels Joe was trying to remember were the Travis McGee books by John D. MacDonald. There was indeed a much better Quiet Man Blu-ray that came out for the 60th anniversary in 2013. On the next episode: Amy's birthday is coming up! So, birthday stories. Randy chose John Hughe's 1984 movie, Sixteen Candles. Joe choose the Jhumpa Lahiri novel The Namesake (and for the record, it was her story collection, Interpreter of Maladies, that was awarded the Pulitzer).

Academy Award Theater - The list of films and actors on Academy Award Theater is very impressive. Bette Davis begins the series in Jezebel, with Ginger Rogers following in Kitty Foyle, and then Paul Muni in The Life of Louis Pasteur. The Informer had to have Victor Mclaglen, and the Maltese Falcon, Humphrey Bogart, Sidney Greenstreet (this movie was his first major motion picutre role) plus Mary Astor for the hat trick. Suspicion starred Cary Grant with Ann Todd doing the Joan Fontaine role, Ronald Coleman in Lost Horizon, and Joan Fontaine and John Lund were in Portrait of Jenny. How Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Pinocchio were done is something to hear! THIS EPISODE: Brief Encounter (1946) is director David Lean's brilliantly-crafted, classic British masterpiece. It is one of the greatest romantic tearjerkers/weepers of all time, with a very downbeat ending. Lean's film is a simple but realistically-honest, unsentimental, self-told social melodrama of the quiet desperation involved in an illicit, extra-marital love affair between two married, middle-class individuals over seven weekly meetings, mostly against the backdrop of a railway station. The romantic couple includes a wife/mother looking for escape from her humdrum life and sterile marriage, and a dashing doctor. tale of The screenplay was adapted and based on playwright Noel Coward's 1935 short one-act (half-hour) stage play Still Life. It was expanded from five short scenes in a train station (the refreshment tea room of Milford Junction Station) to include action in other settings (the married woman's house, the apartment of the married man's friend, restaurants, parks, train compartments, shops, a car, a boating lake and at the cinema), although the film still maintains chaste minimalism.
