On today's show with GunBroker.com, we're at SHOT Show joined by John Snodgrass from Leupold and Kyle Lamb with Viking Tactics. We start out with Logan asking about how the tactical and hunting world are tied together now? John dives into the fact that the Leupold Mark 4 is designed to be able to jump out of a plane with or grab out of a Humvee and still be dialed in, so naturally that transitioned into hunters being interested in some of the same technology. We discuss the difference in Mil dot from the Army and Marines, the biggest difference? The Marine's version had to be crayon friendly! The good thing is everything now is completely the same, that way everything is user friendly across the board. Listen in to this episode Presented by GunBroker.com to hear all about Leupold's involvement in the Mil dot system and the military throughout the years. Next up, we dive into long range shooting and how it's changed over the years. While the firearms themselves have not changed that much over the years, optics absolutely have. Nowadays long range shots in the 600-yard range that used to be highly celebrated and among the more elite few is really a standard shot for a lot of people who practice long range now. A huge improvement now is locking zero dials on scopes. A huge problem throughout history would be trying to dial back after dialing for a further range shot. Logan discusses with Kyle the optics and weapons from the Battle of Mogadishu and his history with different optics during his time serving in the armed forces. Kyle gives us a history on the optics he used throughout his lifetime and some of the pros and cons of the different optics he used during those time periods. Closing out, John gives us an in depth background of Leupold's history. All the way back to the very beginning with creating surveying equipment, the founder of Leupold ended up getting into the scope business during 1947 after he himself fell victim of a fogged scope during a hunt, which led to him saying he could create a better scope himself! Make sure to tune into this episode to hear all about Leupold. The show launches every Thursday morning. Subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts. Learn more about your ad choices. The John Wick Movie franchise has Former CIA and Navy Seal Shawn Ryan to keep it real, and the EXTRACTION franchise and The Gray Man has Craig "CHILI" Palmer! After 25 years in the military and 17 years in the tier 1 life at “The Unit” Craig takes us through his incredible journey after retiring in 2014. From Shot Show, to working with Kyle Lamb at Viking Tactics and then onto meeting Director Sam Hargreave and working on the set of Extraction, Extraction 2 and The Gray Man- it has been yet another growth period in his life. He realised that in retiring from the Unit, he would have to move away from the location he lived and had worked in for 17 years to really help him transition identities and careers ,and you can see this has stood him in good stead. A warrior gentleman ( as so many of my guests truly are) Craig is there simply to help others, and it was an honour, and a pleasure to speak with him. An organic, light and fun conversation, I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. Overall, this episode provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of movies and media, as well as the importance of having mentors and role models to guide you in your career and personal life. Whether you're a fan of action movies like Extraction or simply interested in learning more about the industry, this episode is definitely worth a listen. Chili's military background is impressive. He served in the Tier 1 special operations unit of the United States Army. During his time in “The Unit”, Chili was involved in numerous high-risk missions, including hostage rescues and counter-terrorism operations. After retiring from the military, he transitioned to the movie industry, where he has worked on several blockbuster films, including the action-thriller "Extraction" starring Chris Hemsworth. Chili was responsible for training Hemsworth for his role in "Extraction, and Extraction 2" which required the actor to perform intense physical stunts and fight scenes. Chili's experience in the military gave him a unique perspective on how to train actors for these types of roles. He emphasized the importance of safety and proper technique, while also pushing realism -and of course - “Bullet Count”. In addition to his work in the movie industry, Chili is also involved in several charitable organizations that support veterans and their families. He believes that giving back to the community is an important part of his life, and he encourages others to find ways to make a positive impact in their own communities. I am sure you will love the conversation as much as I did and Chili even shares his excitement for the Extraction sequel and hints at some of the new action sequences and stunts that audiences can expect to see You can find him on Insta at https://www.instagram.com/chilipalmershooting/ I am Damian Porter , Former NZ Special Forces Operator, Subject Matter Expert from www.hownottodie.com.au and you can listen to my STRAIGHT TALK MIND AND MUSCLE PODCAST sponsored by www.realketonesaustralia.com - the best and most effective ketone supplement on the market to reduce anxiety, enhance brain performance and supply twice as much energy as glucose. Last week we had an opportunity to head up the Sig Academy in New Hampshire and take a single person CQB class taught by Kyle Lamb & Chili Palmer from Viking Tactics and Kevin Holland. This was a 2 day class and it was all scenario based with UTM ammunition and basically taught you how to be the 1 man, 2 man, 3 man and 4 man when clearing a room by yourself. This training was intense and something that I would do again and keep doing in order to add the right tools to my toolbox. In this episode we dive into the back story of two long time ZERT members, one of which is a PA state POC and the other is a ZERT Instructor. Listen to 2 guys who have taken a bunch of training talk about what it was like to learn something new and from a point of view they had never thought about before. We talk about the community and family aspect of what ZERT is and what the future holds! Thank you for listening and supporting the show. Chili Palmer (his nickname) was one of the military advisors for the hit Netflix film “Extraction” starring Chris Hemsworth. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I have to say why not? If you are into excellent action movies with fantastic gunplay, then “Extraction” is for you. Too often Hollywood gets it wrong with things like taking the safety off a Glock or holding a pistol with a crazy grip. What about non-existent reloads? All of this can take people in the know (like the folks of the Firearms Nation) out of the movie and walking away with a big thumbs down. Well, the producers of “Avenger’s Endgame” and “Captain America: Civil War” got it right. They hired Chili Palmer. Chili was not the only advisor on the film but his contributions made the climax of the film stand out as one of the best action sequences in a long time. Watch it you’ll see what I mean. The movie “Extraction” came out last weekend and after watching it, I reached out to Chili who graciously accepted to come on and share some of his experiences and participating on the set. Chili served in the Army for 25 years and had over 13 deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. His first mission was the historic raid in Panama taking in the corrupt Manuel Noriega into custody. Chili served in the Unit alongside Kyle Lamb, who happened to be on last week’s episode and is an instructor for Viking Tactics as well. Kyle Lamb is a former Army veteran who served the majority of time in Special Operations, and in the Unit (SOFD-D Delta Force). Most people just say “The Unit”. During that time he served in Iraq, Bosnia, and fought in the Battle of Mogadishu. Once he left the military, Kyle starting teaching firearms instruction and also formed his gear company, Viking Tactics. Kyle has also written several shooting books and a book on leadership called “Leadership in the Shadows” (which he narrates the audiobook version). Kyle also has a very successful podcast, “Team VTAC Podcast” where he interviews other gun industry people and covers historical events. Kyle is currently writing two more books that we talk about on this show. Summary & Ideas for Action Kyle Lamb, President of Viking Tactics, talks about military and business leadership behaviors — what works and what doesn’t — with entertaining stories along the way. His authentic conversation reflects lessons learned that he energetically shares with others. He tells how his entrepreneurial journey started on the family farm, continued through the military, and takes full form in his company, and in writing his books. His main focus is unflinching honesty when appraising team member and mission performance. He talks about his team-building training exercises, and how they are not for feeling good, but for learning to execute the mission with excellence. He uses humor, but keeps the serious moments completely serious. He stresses the importance of the debrief. He tells how his wife debriefed him after reading the final draft of his book, and made him improve it. Listen in to learn how mission skills apply to every endeavor, and in your organization. Key Takeaways [5:15] First, know your mission. In business, some people do not understand what the mission is. Teamwork starts with the mission. [16:05] Kyle talks about dads, needing to be there for their kids, and making sure they perform. Dads should have their children play in very competitive sports. People need to put forth 110%, and win. If you lose after your best effort, it is better than getting a participation trophy for little effort. [20:41] Kyle has always kept his sense of humor. He disrupted school with pranks. Kyle sees humor as a part of quick thinking. He points out sports heroes who have a great sense of humor. [28:24] Kyle explains that his team-building seminars teach you how to do your job. He uses the basics of gear, respecting the team, planning, execution, “hotwashing” (debriefing), and repeating with a different leader. Team-building helps weaker leaders grow stronger. Kyle recalls an interaction with a troop commander who needed to learn the value of the skills of his team. [33:18] Kyle is very serious during the hotwash. He asks, “Do you understand where I’m coming from with this shortcoming that you have?” If they say no, Kyle continues to explain it until they do. Be honest with people. If they bail, that is better then continuing with incompetence. Don’t be mean, but honest. [37:07] Kyle puts mission over money. VTAC builds the best products for their customers. If you’re about the mission, you’re ultimately going to be successful. Kyle reminds his military friends that when they’re out of the Army, they’re no longer commandos, and no one cares what they did as commandos. They have the skillsets to be successful as civilian entrepreneurs, if they apply them to their new mission. [44:00] Kyle’s his first two books trained him for writing his third book, Leadership in the Shadows: Special Operations Soldier. He was unimpressed with leadership books about clawing to the top. A friend offered to help him write a leadership book in return for three V-back T-shirts. So he did. Then his wife read it, and told him to re-write five chapters, this time with a positive attitude. [48:17] Kyle wanted a book to read in five-minute windows. It is a book for busy people. He was inspired by The Warrior Ethos, by Steven Pressfield, that can be read in bits. Kyle includes a hotwash at the end of chapters.
