Microsoft Azure SQL is a fully managed and scalable cloud database service – and its myriad benefits mean your company should be considering it if it isn't already using it. To unpack this in more detail, Preegan Chetty, Microsoft Azure product manager at First Distribution, and Silicon Overdrive Microsoft business executive Jody Roberts join TechCentral's business technology show TCS+. In the episode, they unpack: • The relationship between First Distribution and Silicon Overdrive; • Silicon Overdrive's market focus; • What Azure SQL is and how it's helping companies with their digital transformation initiatives; • Why many South African businesses run SQL Server databases, usually on-premises, and what the advantages are of moving these databases into the Microsoft Azure cloud; • The cost advantages of shifting, and what's involved in doing so; • The security considerations of shifting from on-premises SQL Server to Azure SQL; • The features that make Azure SQL particularly secure; • Use cases of businesses leveraging Azure SQL; and • Azure SQL Database vs SQL Managed Instance vs SQL Service on Azure virtual machines – the differences between these options, and why businesses should choose one over another. Don't miss the discussion. -- TCS+ episodes are sponsored. TechCentral

Managed Instance Impressions

Several years ago, I heard about a new product coming in Azure that would provide an IaaS (infrastructure as a service) VM to run SQL Server, with Microsoft managing most of the admin tasks for the instance, like patching and backups. That didn't seem like a big load to me, and I wondered if anyone would actually pay for this product. After all, don't most companies find managing patches and backups? That product became Azure SQL Managed Instance, and I've been surprised at the adoption. Quite a few clients have adopted this as a way to lift and shift (mostly) to the cloud in an easy fashion without the restrictions of Azure SQL Database. This looks like a "normal" on-premises SQL Server, and there are both high-performance (Business Critical tier) and average-performance (General Purpose tier) versions of the product that let you choose what level of price/performance you need to achieve. Re-platforming is the process of moving a system to a new platform. Imagine taking an ASP.NET/SQL Server website and moving to Azure Functions on Azure SQL Database. Or maybe taking a Java client/server app with Oracle and moving it to a series of microservices against MongoDB. Those changes could be a net benefit to your organization in the end, but they aren't quick or easy. They're often fraught with various challenges that can cause a lot of stress while creeping over budget. There's a post that talks about some of the things you might think about if you embark upon a re-platform. Often this takes place when an organization is looking to modernize their tech stack. Quite a few of the technology DevOps success stories take place when the older structures are not maintainable, but also not able to handle increased workloads or performance requirements. One of the challenges in moving to the cloud is achieving a similar level of performance to what you would get with dedicated hardware on-premises. The cloud is someone else's computer, and you are limited to the choices that the vendors allow you to rent. In many cases, you might even share the physical hardware resources with other customers, though many cloud providers have started to allow dedicated hardware reservations in the last few years. One of the challenges of choosing a PaaS cloud database platform is that there are often restrictions that differ from a similar platform on-premises. This is often to ensure that one customer doesn't affect another, or that customers don't make changes that might prevent the vendor from supporting the system. Azure SQL Database gives us a database only, no instance features, though we do see a virtual master database. Read the rest of Custom SQL Server on RDS

But what happens if someone changes data while someone else is reading it? Even better, what could happen if two or more users try to change the same data at the same time? Well, there are a couple of options. The easiest is to just ask everyone to queue up, the other is to have multiple versions of the data available over time so that no one must wait for the changes to be finished. Let's explore both the options with Lara Rubbelke and Davide Mauri on Azure Friday. Managing concurrent access to a resource, be it a row, a table, or a single value, is easy if no one is trying to modify the underlying data. Davide Mauri is back with Lara Rubbelke to discuss columnstore indexes. In a typical relational database data is stored per row. This means that all row columns are saved together, which is great in all those cases where you want to retrieve all the information related to a specific row. But what if you want to have all the data stored in a subset of columns but for all the rows? That would be complex and slow—unless data was saved per-column instead of per-row. That's exactly what columnstore indexes in Azure SQL Database enables you to do. One of the things I've seen in working with cloud based resources is that you get a lot of them in your account quickly. A database might end up with a server, an IP address, a network, security groups, and more. A few clicks of the mouse in the Azure Portal can create a new Resource Group that doesn't just have the one thing you need, but 3, 4, or more other items. In addition to the quantity, there are also the problems of namespaces in cloud resources. Some of the items you provision are publicly named in a domain, such as database.windows.net. In these cases, the resources need to be unique among all cloud customers. Just like domain names, this means that you might have collisions with your favorite name. While I might like jones.com, there are a few other people that would likewise prefer this. The rest of us might have to choose jones2.com, stevejonesincolorado.com, or some other variation. In large organizations, you might end up with LA34532345454.database.windows.net for an Azure SQL Database. Read the rest of The Useful Cloud Tags

Jupyter Notebooks are a popular way of consolidating a number of code batches together and them executing them as separate batches or all together. These are essentially a document with notes and code, all of which are stored together. Databricks can run these, as can a number of other services. They are also integrated into various tools, like Azure Data Studio. Just like many other technologies, we'd like to execute these in a way that suits our environment. While running these in a tool like ADS works fine, we might want to schedule these and check the results later. You can run notebooks with PowerShell, but keeping around results and managing the data is hard. Since many of us use SQL Server or Azure SQL Database, wouldn't it be great if we could find a way to have these run inside SQL Server and keep the results around?
