The loading dock behind the former post office in downtown Sylva was never intended as a theatrical stage. But beyond the location, Ashlee Wasmund has created something rarely seen in rural Western North Carolina--a theater company focused on new, original, locally produced work. "I think that has always been on my bucket list," Wasmund said. She and her husband moved to Sylva from Chicago six years ago when she became the program director of musical theater and dance at Western Carolina University. Her new company, Calliope Stage , premieres on this loading dock over the next two weekends with a program of 10 original theatrical shorts. The vignettes jump from drama to comedy, music and dance--all created by people in the far west of this state, all inspired by an event, person or place from the region. Six performances run through Aug. 5-14 on what Calliope is calling the Loading Dock Stage.
On March 9th, 2016, Miriam's older brother and only sibling passed away suddenly from an overdose. She and her mother, both devastated from a loss they had spent a lifetime trying to avoid, were left to figure out what life looked like without him. One year later, Miriam's mother, wracked with grief, passed away from cancer after a steep decline and an all-too-brief diagnosis. Now the only surviving member of her tiny family unit, Miriam has been openly traveling through her grief in the hopes of helping even one person know they are not alone in the darkness and depth of their experience. Using her work in the fitness and wellness community, combined with being an accomplished performer and choreographer, she has allowed her life-altering experience and perspectives to be raw within her work as a way of helping to foster a healing balance between loss and the joys that still infuse life. Her hope is to create healing in herself and to facilitate others to share their stories in their journey towards healing. In this episode she explores the differences between foreseen and unforeseen loss, the devastation left behind from addiction and the horrific pitfalls of the American healthcare system. In 2019, inspired by letters she used to exchange with her family, Miriam went on to create "Your Faithful Reader," an experiential theater performance. Miriam lives in Brooklyn with her much loved cats and plants and believes her family is in everything she does and that they live on everywhere there is light, energy and joy in the world. Shaa Wasmund is todays guest joining us on the Join Up Dots podcast. She is a lady who has built her life around taking action and making things happen. As she says "I'm an entrepreneur, public speaker and the author of #1 bestselling books ‘Stop Talking, Start Doing' and ‘Do Less, Get More'. In 2015 I was awarded an MBE for ‘Services to Business and Entrepreneurship' and was recently named one of the UK's Top 20 Influential Entrepreneurs by The Sunday Times. Born in California to an English mother and Italian father, Ms Wasmund and her mother settled permanently in the UK when she was 10. After winning a scholarship to the prestigious City of London School for Girls, she studied international relations at the London School of Economics. How The Dots Joined Up For Shaa It was while at the LSE that Ms Wasmund, then 21, won a competition to interview Chris Eubank, then a middleweight world champion boxer. Eubank was so impressed with her confidence or "front" that he offered her the job of becoming his assistant. Ms Wasmund said yes, and so she started her business career in the competitive world of boxing. She became the only female boxing promoter in the UK, representing World Champion Chris Eubank and working with the infamous Don King before starting my own PR company helping grow the Dyson brand from around Sir James Dyson's kitchen table. From that point more and more hustle and success came her way, which isn't a surprise as he also says "I believe that we all have the ability to live the lives we dream of. We just don't always know how. The greatest courage is to follow your own path even through the roughest terrain, rather than the path of least resistance. Nothing great is ever created in your comfort zone. I believe it's OK to not know the answers, to feel stuck and frustrated; it happens to all of us. What's not OK is to stay stuck." So when the big punches in the mouth occurred in her business, how did she dust herself down and get back up? And why is her number one piece of business advice "Hire A Cleaner" Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the only and only Shaa Wasmund MBE. Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty subjects with Shaa Wasmund MBE such as We talk about the difficulties that youngsters now deal with from coming from entitlement. Shaa shares the lucky breaks that she has had in her life, especially in regards to working with the Genius James Dyson. Why a business becomes more and more successful the more you focus on the value you offer others. Its all about giving. and lastly........ Shaa tells us all why we have to visualise what we want in life and why it so important to get those images in my mind to make them happen.

There’s a fine line between pushing yourself and pushing yourself too far. But what’s the difference? “No pain no gain” after all, right? How do you know when it’s pain for good, or pain for “holy shit this isn’t good?” On today’s show, that’s what my friend Colie Wasmund and I talk about. She’s competed in two body-building competitions. She shares what she learned from the competitions, but also what we can do differently if we want to avoid the pain that she went through. It’s a doozy! Enjoy the show! #StayCurious
Talking with Barrel Culture and Une Année/ Hubbard's Cave at one of the Southeast's best beer fests Recently one of the best beer festivals in the Southeast descended on Atlanta, GA (OK, technically Chamblee). I'm sure I'm a bit biased with it being on my home turf, but when you have nearly 70 highly regarded breweries from around the country bring out their best IPAs, Sours, Stouts, Pilsners, and Meads it's going to be a great party. In addition to Barrel Culture and Une Année/ Hubbard's Cave, breweries like Carton, Civil Society, Horus, Old Nation, and The Answer were also pouring. Blue Pants even had a Pilsner on slow pour, and if you're a regular listener you know we're loving that right now. Barrel Culture's head brewer Paul Wasmund joined us to talk about what's coming up at their brewery. One of Wasmund's goals when joining Barrel Culture in late 2018 was to introduce clean beers alongside their delicious sour beers, which they launched just before the festival. Wasmund also talks about the addition of spontaneously fermented beers and brett Saisons, and we get his thoughts on superheroes. Jerry Nelson, the founder of Hubbard's Cave and Une Année, has quite a story. He initially launched Une Année with a focus on classic Belgian Ales, but consumers didn't want classic Belgian Ales. Coupled with a few other hurdles, his brewery nearly went bankrupt. Nelson decided to create a new identity in Hubbard's Cave to offer more popular beer styles. Soon, he'll open a new brewery in Niles, IL. In a development with a replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. No kidding. None of this would have been possible without the hard work of the guys from distributor Modern Hops. Partners Philip Barnes and Michael Lowenberg (pictured bottom center in the above photo) talk about their unique approach to beer distribution and how they made the festival happen, as well as their support for the Georgia Transplant Foundation with the event's proceeds. "It doesn't have to be hard for you to be worthy to get it." Who do I be? The first time I heard that question, it caught me off guard. What does it mean to "be?" I wondered. I always assumed "doing" was more important than "being." But the more I learn about worth, the more I learn that our way of being in this world is far more important than our way of doing. I was reminded of this in a big way when I sat down with my friend Colie Wasmund to record an episode during a time of huge transition in her life. She is right in the middle of reinventing herself on every level and she happened to be in town so we got to connect. The more we compared notes about life and what we're learning, the more obvious it became that she had been learning the power of "being" her best self while letting go of a lifetime of "doing" to prove her worth. I am so grateful we got to share this conversation at this time, and I'm so excited to see what Colie creates as she trusts the power of being herself fully. LISTEN ON: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Play | Stitcher Show notes: How leaving your comfort zone in small ways can lead to bigger leaps (7:05) Why big life changes that look great on paper don't always go the way we think (15:30) How to find a clear signal amid the wreckage of plans going south (20:01) Why grounding yourself in nature is so powerful amid chaos (21:05) What it feels like to truly let go of the thing we are afraid of (23:20) How letting people support you allows you to realize what a gift it is to serve (24:40) The way that gifts of support show us we are worthfull (30:10) Why we don't have to struggle to get good things in our lives (33:15) How surrendering relates to feeling worthy (34:45) The value of learning to create results in both masculine and feminine energy (40:45) The questions to ask yourself when you turn inward (47:15) "'This isn't what I look like' until I realized that's what I looked like."
