Last year, a group of conservative state legislators started the Louisiana Freedom Caucus. It's modeled after the Congressional Freedom Caucus, which has, among other things, thrown the U.S. House speakership in turmoil. The Louisiana Illuminator reported last week that the Louisiana Freedom Caucus sent anti-LGBTQ text messages to voters on Election Day. Reporter Julie O'Donoghue joins us for more. In Louisiana, judges have a financial incentive to set high bail and secure convictions. State law allows them to issue fees to criminal defendants, and then use the money to pay for court expenses — creating a conflict of interest that was declared unconstitutional by a federal appeals court.  During a yearlong investigation by WWNO, WRKF and Type Investigations, reporter Garrett Hazelwood found judges sometimes use the funds to lease fancy cars and rent beachside condos. He joins us to discuss his findings and the possibility for reform. A multi-year construction project on Interstate 10 in Baton Rouge is underway, and already motorists are feeling the effects of increased traffic. Across the city, drivers are looking for ways to mitigate the congestion and  some are turning to carpooling.  Kenyatta Robertson, program manager for travel demand management at the Capital Region Planning Commission, tells us about a new carpooling initiative known as Commuter Krewe. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Adam Vos. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber and our assistant producer is Aubry Procell. Our engineer is Garrett Pittman. He stresses the importance of not wasting time created through people leverage and explains how software and systems can automate repeatable tasks. While not referring to financial leverage, Lloyd cautions against relying solely on borrowing capital. By sharing personal anecdotes and examples, including Warren Buffett's early entrepreneurial ventures, Lloyd demonstrates the power of leverage in amplifying time and increasing profit. He provides practical advice on implementing systems leverage in both personal and business contexts, urging listeners to delegate tasks and embrace technology and software to save time and be more productive. Have you ever received a spirit message for someone else that you weren't expecting? In this week's episode of the podcast, our psychic medium host Jessica Meils takes us back to the beginnings of her mediumship development when she was taking classes in Los Angeles, getting comfortable with doing readings and setting boundaries around spirit messages intended for family members or friends. She shares a story before she started taking mediumship development classes about a special friend who had lost their partner who was visiting both her and her husband in their dreams. One memorable experience was him letting her know that he knew about a pregnancy within the family. When spirit started to carpool with her on her trips to LA for development classes, she spent a lot of time in the car and received a majority of spirit messages while driving in her car. One story in particular she recalls, heading to meet with a classmate early before a class started to do practice healings and practice readings, she heard a voice say "I'm here for her", shaking this off she hears the same thing again, this time spirit identifying himself as her uncle. Listen to these stories and more as Jessica shares how setting boundaries on receiving spirit messages and knowing who you can give readings for comes with practice, development and ongoing communication with the spirit world. Life-changing events can be a regular occurrence and especially challenging for families that have someone with special needs, something that Jen DeMotte knows first-hand as the parent of a child with special needs and autism. On the episode, Aimee chats with Jen about some of the most helpful things other people have done for her family during difficult circumstances. Jen also gets real about some of the challenges of being a parent to a child with special needs as well as the moments of joy and connection. Episode Highlights Special needs families may be reluctant to accept help. If a family has a member with special needs, their daily life will be very specialized and likely incredibly different from yours. Oftentimes, people with special needs struggle with changes to their routines and have unique health needs that can make it difficult for families to accept help. “How we live life is so different and specialized,” Jen said. “A lot of times when folks offer to help it's difficult for me to accept.” If you do want to help a family with special needs, Jen recommends directly asking what you can do to help. Suggestions include: Doing the laundry Buying a Costco-size version of a favorite snack (with approval) Sitting with a caregiver while they make insurance calls Carpooling other family members to places they need to go Don't judge. The home of a person with special needs is often one of their only safe places in the world where they are loved and accepted unconditionally. So if you're helping someone with special needs -- especially in their home -- make sure you're respecting that safe, judgment-free space. You also should stick to routines and follow instructions given by parents and caregivers even if you don't understand why things must be done in a particular way. “It is hard when someone comes into our house and says, Why don't you just do this?'” Jen said. “Because it doesn't work. Everything we do is different.” Be ready for anything. Offering to help a person with special needs means being prepared to help with tasks you may find weird. For instance, when Jen was potty training her then-8-year-old daughter, therapists recommended that her daughter not wear pants around the house, so she could understand what was happening. While the technique may sound odd to outsiders, it worked, and even years later, Jen is grateful to people who helped her family during that time. “You just need one person to be like, ‘Just tell me what you're doing, and I will do it, and you can take a breath,'” Jen said. Sometimes the best help is just to listen. Daily life can sometimes be challenging for parents of a child with special needs, and the best thing you can do is just to sit and listen. That can mean comforting a parent if they need to vent or celebrating a milestone, even if it looks different than you might expect. “I love our life, but sometimes life is really hard,” Jen said. “There's joy in those kitchen counter moments where some says, ‘Just tell me about your day. What happened?'” Resources + Links Aimee Kandrac: Website, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn WhatFriendsDo: Website, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn About Aimee and WhatFriendsDo  Aimee Kandrac is a speaker, consultant, and the co-founder and CEO of WhatFriendsDo. Pat Dillon, Chief Financial Officer, Flock Freight joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy Podcast to discuss the current economic outlook and Flock's carpooling for freight model that unlocks value for shippers and carriers. The conversation begins with Pat sharing his insight on how as CFO, he is preparing Flock Freight for a potential recession in the United States which is currently being forecasted at 50% according to the Bloomberg United States Recession Probability Forecast. We are certainly cognizant of the broader macro environment and how that impacts our business. It certainly means that as consumer behavior changes or industrial production, the demand for freight transportation has an impact on that, so that certainly translates into our business. – Pat DillonWhile Flock Freight is still a growth company, the company is taking prudent measures to be prepared for the scenario that the United States economy falls into a recession. One of the company's economic advantages is that they operate an asset-light shared truckload platform that enables cost savings for their customers. Shared truckload would mean that we can take a 20 ft shipment from Customer A and a 25 ft shipment from Customer B and pool those together into a single truckload, so it never has to go on a hub and go through a warehouse. And you are getting point-to-point transportation. It's essentially carpooling for freight. – Pat DillonShipping using shared truckloads can reduce carbon emissions up to 40% due to higher utilization through fewer driven miles. As an important metric as this is, truck tonnage in the United States increased 7.4% in August 2022, year-over-year. The growth can be partially attributed to the catch-up effect as the global supply chain has begun to normalize. While the global supply chain has normalized today, the freight market will continue to fluctuate with the driver shortage and a potential slowdown in consumer spending. Creating opportunities for Flock that CNBC has taken notice as the company has climbed from #42 on the CNBC Disruptor 50 list in 2021 to #14 in 2022. With a potential recession on the horizon, Pat discusses what impact consolidation in the truck freight market will have on Flock Freight. Unlike a lot of other markets that might already be pretty consolidated, were further consolidation has signifiant pressure on margins, this is not that type of market. It's hyper fragmented and we do not see it having much of a day-to-day impact from that perspective on Flock Freight. – Pat DillonFrom a technology perspective, autonomous trucks are preparing to scale and the timing could not be better as there is a growing demand for freight and a growing driver shortage. Like a lot of things, there are big problems throughout the truck freight world and big problems are big opportunities. That's how you create new capacity when you are constrained on the number of drivers. – Pat DillonAutonomous trucks will compliment Flock Freight as they be able to provide autonomous shared truckload capacity. As new technologies come online such as hydrogen fuel-cell and electric heavy-duty trucks, Flock will look at ways to potential integrate those technologies into their platform.Wrapping up the conversation, Pat shares his thoughts on the future of freight. If you are a player in freight you will need to be able to have a more diversified approach in terms of the offerings you give to your customers. – Pat DillonFollow The Road To Autonomy on Apple PodcastsFollow The Road To Autonomy on LinkedInFollow The Road To Autonomy on TwitterRecorded on Friday, September 30, 2022See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode 220: Death with a Little "d" - Interview Margaret MeloniWhen a marriage fails, a friendship terminates, we find new wrinkles and new sagging skin, we lose a job or lose a beloved pet, the facts of impermanence stare, unblinking, at us. While logically we can acknowledge that impermanence is a matter of fact, a fact of life, it is also something we fear. We fear losing our youth, people and pets we love, a job that helps us define who we are, a way of life, wealth, etc. With that fear comes suffering. Learning to let go….that's what we are talking about today. Today's episode is about Death with a little d. I've called in our death specialist, Margaret Meloni, but we aren't talking about dealing with the death of our loved ones or ourselves today, more about the death of less crucial things. And we are having this discussion because a section of the road to enlightenment is living with more peace and less fear, and impermanence is one of those things we get to understand better. Tune in for what this looks like in real life and maybe come away with a new coping skill. Margaret Meloni is used to talking about death. In fact, her second book recently hit the book stands, Sitting With Death: Buddhist Insights to Help You Face Your Fears and Live a Peaceful Life. Her first book, Carpooling with Death, was highlighted in episode 146 of the Love Your Story podcast. But I don't want to talk about Death with a big D today. Refer back to that episode for that discussion.  Today I want to talk about impermanence. Margaret's second season on her podcast, Death Dhamma, she is focusing on death with a little d. - the impermanence of all things and with the ability to accept that impermanence we increase the ability to create less painful life stories. So we'll learn how to navigate the inevitability of change today. In the audio program we'll discuss ideas like: Can you tell us a little about how you got into the study of death? What is death with a little “d”? Let's talk about the idea of impermanence. How do you define it? What does it look like in our lives? How do we accept it? Things that we can expect to be impermanent: relationships, health, jobs, etc. What would you add to this list? Shelley Knight said, “We are all grieving something. When we talk about grief people think it's the death of a loved one and it's not just that – that's bereavement. Grief is the loss of anything with which you have an emotional connection. It could be your health, a relationship, a dream, your self-confidence, or something else. We don't need to hide it. We need to normalize it.” In your discussions on your podcast regarding this topic - what insight/story has stuck with you the most? Let's talk about: pain+resistance = suffering. Does the acceptance of impermanence help us with resistance and thus reduce our suffering? There are lots of real feelings to deal with when we lose something important to us.  What do you think is the most helpful Buddhist teaching regarding impermanence and dealing with it? In your blog post - Master Improvisation, Master Impermanence, you talk about the rules of good improv.  “All you need to know is that there will be death, in that awareness there will be peace.” - Margaret Meloni To Contact Margaret: Social Media https://twitter.com/MargaretMeloni (https://twitter.com/MargaretMeloni) https://www.linkedin.com/in/margaretmeloni/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/margaretmeloni/) https://www.facebook.com/DeathDhamma (https://www.facebook.com/DeathDhamma) https://www.facebook.com/groups/962871121024043 (https://www.facebook.com/groups/962871121024043) Website: https://www.margaretmeloni.com/ (https://www.margaretmeloni.com/) What are you grieving the loss of in your life. Maybe it's as simple as the loss of an expectation - you expected a marriage to be happily ever after, you expected a friend to be loyal, you expected a party you threw to turn out...
