Traverse City Whiskey Co (Traverse City, Michigan) WF0029 Way back in 2019 I was in my favorite Tennessee whiskey shop when I saw a bottle I'd heard about but hadn't seen in the wild. It was a bottle of XXX Traverse City Straight Bourbon Whiskey. I bought it and really enjoyed the flavor and the idea I was sipping something from the state I was born in. Today, Traverse City is growing the spirits its making and focusing on the local cherry scene. Join me as I chat with Chris Fredrickson, co-founder of Traverse City Whiskey Company, meet the company dog, and get a sense of what's to come. This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief takes a ride to northern Michigan to chat with Chris Fredrickson, Co-Founder of Traverse City Whiskey Company. Chris tells Big Chief and listeners about the history of Traverse City Whiskey. He explains how they have leveraged the cherries from his family's orchards to create an amazing cherry whiskey. They are also amazing in any whiskey cocktail. They start the show by sipping on their straight bourbon whiskey. At 86 proof this is a great summer sipper. They then move on to the barrel proof bourbon. The Big Man loved the sweetness and spice of this one. To start the second half, they sip on the North Coast Rye. This unique blend of rye whiskies is a flavor bomb. Mint spice, liquorish, and orange zest make this something special. They then move on to the barrel strength rye. Oh my, orange slice candies and rich stone fruits. To finish the show, they crack open their best selling Bourbon infused with Traverse cherries. Oh my! At 70 proof it's simply delicious. If only the Big Man had a barrel proof edition of this. This ride on The Whiskey Trip showcases another great craft distillery. Cheers!

On this episode, Butch and Lance kick off a new segment called "Emerging Label" where they pop the top on a bottle of Old Louisville Whiskey Co. Rye batch #1. This is a newer whiskey company that is starting to establish its name in the bourbon industry.
Since the announcement of Coors Whiskey Co buying Blue Run, we thought it would sneak a preview taste of Coor's very own "Five Trail" Blended American Whiskey. Three straight bourbons and a Colorado single malt, all from undisclosed locations combine into a pretty darn drinkable profile. This ain't whiskey for the super nerds, but something different, an every day drinkable American Blend. Soft spice on the nose, light fruit, and a touch of oak, definitely traditional bourbon flavor forward. On the palate, peaches, apples, and oranges with a chewy, malt-driven core. Tastes like peach preserves on a biscuit and goes down really well with a yellow jacket!
The gang find themselves in a strange forgotten layer, and must make allies with people who are neither guest nor employee if they have any chance of escape. Beef simmers. Traverse City Whiskey Co. (TCWC) was started as both a hobby and a business by Chris Fredrickson and a couple of friends. They started as many do, by buying aged MGP and selling it while building their own distillery. A decade later, depending on the product, the MGP percentage is at 10%, or even lower. What they are buying from MGP - when they buy - is unaged distillate to their own specifications and needs. Their rye blends their own Michigan-distilled 100% rye with MGP's 95/5, for example. Traverse City is also the cherry capital of the world, something Chris knows as a third-generation cherry farmer. Montmorency, Balaton, sour or sweet, Chris and TCWC know their cherries. The cocktail cherries are an in-house recipe and the only cherries I use in my cocktails, and the annual Cherry Whiskeyfest they throw is not to be missed. The best part - my favorite part - of TCWC is that each product is for a different audience. The Barrel Proof whiskies aren't simply out-of-the-barrel versions of the lower proof ones; they're aged longer and in different parts of the warehouse. Their North Coast Rye is closer to a 50/50 mix of MGP and TCWC distillate, not a proofed-down Barrel Proof Rye. Targeting consumers is nothing new - targeting them in a way that differentiates you is. _________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so! She has a rock-solid mindset that has kept her focused on the path forward and grounded in her beliefs that everything happens for a reason. Listen in to hear more about how Brittany runs one of the fastest-growing spirit companies! Yeng was one to watch as she took her husband's wacky idea of combining peanut butter and whiskey and turned it into a shelf-stable product and Hollywood favorite that reached national distribution in just one short year. An industry disruptor and a woman making waves in a male dominated industry, she is a highly educated woman juggling parenting while running a leading spirits company, creating a brand that goes beyond just whiskey. Skrewball is a lifestyle that is welcoming to all manner of weirdo, maverick and misfit that brings people together in a world of uncertainty. When Yeng isn't taking over the spirits industry one bottle at a time, she enjoys spending time with her daughters and getting off the grid while traveling to far remote places with her family.
