Starting Friday, airlines will cancel flights at busy airports across the country, including the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration directed airlines to cut traffic by 10 percent to keep travelers safe during the government shutdown. Air traffic controllers have been working without pay since October 1 and that has exacerbated staffing problems. The shutdown is now the longest in United States history. Gunnar Olson, a reporter and podcast host with Thrifty Traveler joined MPR News host Nina Moini with advice for passengers.

The entire landscape of student loans is undergoing a lot of change. Starting Friday, thousands of Minnesotans who are on the student loan SAVE plan will see their balances grow, with interest now being re-applied. Though SAVE borrower's payments are still on pause. It's one of many changes that are taking place over the next several years. The state of Minnesota has one person dedicated to helping borrowers navigate their repayments. Jabra Kawas is the state's first and only Student Loan Advocate under the Minnesota Department of Commerce. Kawas says last year he worked with 230 people. This year he already has 250 cases. A spate of deadly shootings across the Bay are highlighting an ongoing surge in gun violence in the region, especially since the pandemic, which in part interrupted some of the work that had been trying to prevent gun violence. In Oakland, community groups and the city's Department of Violence Prevention (DVP) say it's going to take creative thinking to solve this problem — and that includes investing in arts and culture. Starting Friday and through July, DVP is bringing back Town Nights, a series of arts and culture events around Oakland that provide resources and positive social outlets. So why do some of the city's leading gun violence prevention groups say this programming is effective at stopping gun violence? Starting Friday, the state will start sending out about nine and a half billion dollars worth of tax rebates to Californians to help people with their bills. The one time payments will range from $400 to $1,050 dollars for joint tax filers and between $200 and $700 dollars for those who filed individually. A poll published this week by Valley Vision, a civic leadership organization in the Sacramento area, found nearly nine of every 10 Black residents are concerned about the cost of housing in the Sacramento region. That's higher than any other racial or ethnic group.
