When scholars analyse Thai politics, they tend to give importance to institutions like the monarchy, the military, the parliament, and political parties; or, political ideas like ‘royalist nationalism' or democracy. But what if the real driver of Thai politics was none of these things, but instead, political families? Yoshinori Nishizaki examines this proposition in his new book, Dynastic Democracy: Political Families in Thailand, which has just been published by University of Wisconsin Press in 2022. In this incredibly researched book, Nishizaki makes the powerful argument that it is the struggles between different political families have helped shape modern Thai politics. In pursuing this argument Nishizaki questions some of the major assumptions about Thailand's political history. The book's approach may also help us in understand the contemporary politics of other Southeast Asian countries. Japan has disadvantages to score against European teams in normal play based on the players, but has other advantages which must be used optimally. Speed, manoeuvrability and agility are top priorities here. But Yoshinori was also in the USA for a while and got important insights into the training work of successful coaches from which he still benefits today. In the latest podcast episode he tells us which trainers these were and what things he still practices today.

On this episode of Video Games 2 the MAX hosts Sean Garmer and Marc Morrison discuss the delay of HALO Infinite and what it means for the Xbox Series X launch in November. Does it make things even grimmer for Microsoft in going up against Sony and the PlayStation 5, or could this be the time for shine for their services like Xbox Gamepass and X-Cloud. However, will Apple’s insistence on Consumer protection put a dent in those plans at least for IOS devices. Sean has a big problem with Apple’s statement of why they aren’t down with Microsoft’s services on IOS. The duo also discusses some of the announcements at the most recent Sony State of Play and what they are excited for the most like The Pathless, Spelunky 2 and the Control expansion. Plus, Yoshinori Ono leaves Capcom, Dante will be in the Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Remaster, and Christopher Eccleston returning to Doctor Who in audio form. We are delighted to be able to present an exclusive mix from one of the most intriguing producers and disc jockeys in electronic music at present... Yoshinori Hayashi has established a singular sound following releases on the likes of Smalltown Supersound, Going Good, JINN Records, Gravity Graffiti, Jheri Tracks and Disco Halal. Hayashi has studied under Japanese avant-classical composer Mica Nozawa. When not DJing, he works in a record store in Tokyo. The Japanese producer does well to blend and integrate intriguing elements of ambient, eastern soundscapes alongside an eclectic take on house, techno, krautrock and industrial music. Far reaching and forward thinking, this is the future of electronic music.

Yoshinori Natsume, artist and writer of the Japanese manga Togari, tries his hand with an American icon with these first two issues of the four issue Batman: Death Mask. Togari Volume 2 by Yoshinori Natsume. Translated by Hiroko Yoda and Matt Alt. Published by Viz. First published in Japan in 2001 by Shogakukan. $9.99. Rated T+ for Older Teens. Tobei has been roasting in Hell for around 300 years, ever since he was executed at the young age of 16 for innumerable crimes. In those 300 years of torture and pain he has never once renounced his crimes or felt remorse. Now Lady Ema, the overseer of Hell, offers him a deal. If he can destroy 108 sins, called Toga, in 108 days, he can get out of Hell. He is given a wooden sword called Togari and sent to Earth. One of his guards, Ose, also accompanies him, mainly staying in the form of a dog. If he even thinks about committing a sin, his old execution wound opens. He is also not allowed to hurt the human host of a Toga. If he does, his head is in danger of falling off his body! Will human kindness be able to turn him away from his dark past of killing and stealing? My Grade: A-
