TCW Podcast Episode 215 - Final Fantasy VII   Final Fantasy VII holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers. For some, it was the first time they really connected with a JRPG. For others, it marked the transition from pixel art games to 3D gaming. Final Fantasy VII owes much to the storytelling work of its predecessor, Final Fantasy VI, led by Yoshinori Kitase. Kitase used his love of filmmaking to add an artistic flair to games, improving on the static scenes most games relied on. With Final Fantasy VII, Kitase aimed to overcome hardware limitations in storytelling. This desire to push beyond hardware constraints also led SquareSoft to break ties with Nintendo and join Sony with their new PlayStation. The marketing of FF VII in the West as more than just an RPG helped it become the first Final Fantasy game to sell more in the West than in Japan, thereby cementing JRPGs in the public's mind.   TCW 157 - Final Fantasy's Tale: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/final-fantasy-s-tale/ FFVI - Sand on my boots!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W79EPTyL7Pc FFVI - Opera Scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwHrQdC02FY FFVI - Cid's Death and Celes Reaction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHNcwGol0zo FFVI - Loke and Rachel's Backstory: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xl7urWIrQTU FFVI - The Falcon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZA9om3Ezww The Original Trilogy ILM Special Effects Makers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85MK2GDkoxo Star Wars Intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJguy6wSYyI Spaceballs Intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dZveoBfiww TCW 053 - This History and Merger of Enix and Square: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-history-and-merger-of-enix-and-square/ TCW 011 - The Genesis of JRPGs: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-genesis-of-jrpgs/ FF IV - Intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Njl7aBS0Ah4 FF IV - The Giant of Babil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mq6k1gHh_2k  FF VI - Coin Toss: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0ZSXwMe678 FF VI - Intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAD31P49hsw FF 7 - An Oral History: https://www.polygon.com/a/final-fantasy-7 Polygon - Final Fantasy VI Tech Demo with Kazuyuki Hashimoto: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DTjrY1LXrk FF VI SGI Tech Demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHHdODEMD9c FF VII Opening Movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CORYpK6_W8 Interview With Hironobu Sakaguchi: https://youtu.be/wucMb3Hcuhc?t=269 Friendly Tap of the Horn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mYHss0Xmus Following the Blood Trail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkQq79OZIvE The Midgar Zolom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfqkWu1Yrj8 Knights of the Round cast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sv9aI5RkoeQ Sephiroth's Ultimate Attack - Super Nova: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ktc022h9Nj8 Final Fantasy VII Commercials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDz9A4ByHIQ FF7 Promo Art: https://www.mobygames.com/game/858/final-fantasy-vii/promo/ Aerith's Death: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGuohjmGY3Q     New episodes are on the 1st and 15th of every month!   TCW Email: feedback@theycreateworlds.com  Twitter: @tcwpodcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theycreateworlds Alex's Video Game History Blog: http://videogamehistorian.wordpress.com Alex's book, published Dec 2019, is available at CRC Press and at major on-line retailers: http://bit.ly/TCWBOOK1     Intro Music: FF VII Opening ~ Bombing Mission: https://archive.org/details/final_fantasy_vii_soundtrack/02-Opening+~+Bombing+Mission.mp3     Outro Music: RolemMusic - Bacterial Love: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Rolemusic/Pop_Singles_Compilation_2014/01_rolemusic_-_bacterial_love    Copyright: Attribution: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

My guest today is a Japanese video-game director, producer, and executive officer of Square-Enix. Born in 1966 in Fussa City in the suburbs of Tokyo, he studied filmmaking at Nihon University. After graduating, he was working at an animation studio when he first played Final Fantasy on the Famicom, and immediately saw the dramatic potential of the video game medium. Despite having no technical skills, he joined Square in 1990, to work as an “event planner”, involved in level design for Seiken Densetsu (Final Fantasy Adventure) for the Game Boy. Four years later he directed Final Fantasy VI, a game widely considered a classic. A protégée of the company's founder, Hironobu Sakaguchi, my guest subsequently worked on many of the company's best-loved titles, and now serves as Brand Manager for the Final Fantasy series. “My father would complain that he had no idea what was going on when I played RPGs at home after school,” he once told me. “This made me want to make games that those watching the screen beside the player might also find interesting.”  Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. This week has been a whirlwind of rumors, speculation, and reports centered around Microsoft's possible direction for the future of Xbox as a brand, as a console, and what that means for the gaming world in general. Gaming social media imploded so crazily that Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer had to reveal a business summit is occurring next week that will cover this. Sean and Marc discuss this possible major change to gaming, will it really be all that bad? Is it a big deal if Xbox no longer has any "true exclusives?" does this mean that it is now Game Pass or bust? What avenues does Microsoft gaming really have at this point? And is this the death of the Xbox Console? Also, Marc is near the end of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Sean has some thoughts on Persona 3 Reload and speaks generally (without spoilers) about the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth demo and some things from the State of Play. This week, Sony graced us all with a rather lengthy PlayStation State of Play showing off the promised games such as Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin, but also delivering a few surprises such as an almost 10-minute look at Death Stranding 2 among other announcements. Sean and Marc give their thoughts on the State of Play and if they are more hyped about anything that was shown than they were previously. Also, Marc has been playing quite a lot of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, as he traverses through Hawaii with Ichiban and friends exploring the beaches, the Animal Crossing-like Dondoko Island, and battling it out with the Sujimon. Sean unfortunately hasn't been able to play much, but both of them will be able to discuss Persona 3: Reload next week at least. There's also a rumor that Sony may be working on a PlayStation Vita 2 or at least a true original portable device, but that it would not be released for at least another two years. - Star Wars Eclipse tomaría inspiraciones de The Last of Us. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on Final Fantasy VI, which is often in the conversation surrounding the pinnacle of the 16-bit JRPG. We set the game in its time, and then turn to it directly, talking about world-building and how 2D feels better than 3D for these sorts of games, among other topics. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Up to South Figaro Issues covered: who chose this game, stringing out the announcement of the game, how the numbering happened, the apex 16-bit JRPG, Square leaving Nintendo, 1994 in games, knowing what they're doing, feeling like a late-generation game, the transition from VI to VII, the expense of cartridges vs CDs, getting to the limits of cartridges, investing in the cinematics department, self-correcting the numbering scheme, how good the cinematics department was, moving to more of a cinematics-based storytelling style, caveat: this is our darned podcast, Nomura starting as a "debugger," the advantages of staying somewhere for a long time, compressed world-building on the SNES version, making the cinematic for people who already know the game, having expectations, 2D holding up better than 3D from this era, not being ready to compare with Chrono Trigger yet, feeling hyper-linear and not being able to pursue options you think you should, feeling like Chrono Trigger was better balanced for straight play, feeling more adventure-gamey, having moments that stick with you, being balanced towards easy early on, getting poor feedback from an enemy, leaning on Edgar's strengths, some parallels with other popular media, sticking with the given names, hoping for strong characterization, similarity in presentation across modes in 2D and late 3D, universality and abstraction, having a great moment in a combat, adding layers of confusion to presentation with multiple interpretations and writers, removing abilities at the end of the game, adding challenge, addressing adventure game dialog trees through time rewind. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Chrono Trigger, Ultima, Dragon Quest/Warrior, Earthbound, Level-5, Studio Ghibli, Ni No Kuni, Nintendo, Super Metroid, Warcraft, TIE Fighter, X-COM: UFO Defense, Earthworm Jim, Donkey Kong Country, Tekken, Namco, DOOM (1993), System Shock, The Elder Scrolls: Arena, Master of Magic, Theme Park, Aladdin, The Lion King, Sonic (series), Sega Genesis, Quake, PlayStation, Blizzard, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yoshinori Kitase, Shigeru Miyamoto, Fallout, Vampire: the Masquerade, Troika, Hiroyuki Ito, Tetsuya Nomura, Tetsuya Takahashi, Nobuo Uematsu, Kingdom Hearts, The Spirits Within, Star Wars, Pokemon, Arcanum, Baldur's Gate, Scott McCloud, Understanding Comics, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Ben "from Iowa" Zaugg, Symphony of the Night, God of War II, Life Is Strange (season one), Wasteland 2, Spider-Verse, Spider-Man 2, Tobey Maguire, Returnal, Groundhog Day, Death Stranding, The Last Story, Mistwalker Studios, Wii, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Today we're discussing the future of the Final Fantasy franchise, but in a way that you might not expect! It comes after legendary creator Yoshinori Kitase spoke to Kotaku about his vision for future games within the franchise and how he wants to incorporate things he's learnt on Mobius into home console titles. It's an interesting thought and it leads onto interesting discussions around the potential for an early access Final Fantasy title, as well as the direction things could potentially go from a gameplay perspective. Outside of that, we have the customary news update including the announcement of a new game and an update on the future of the Type franchise!

Ultima Final Fantasy | The Ultimate Final Fantasy Podcast

This week, Kaleb and Joe dive deep into the sequel to Final Fantasy XIII. Well, the first sequel that is.    Development: Final Fantasy XIII-2 was released on December 15th 2011 in Japan, and January 31st 2012 in the United States. The game was developed and published by our very own Square Enix, though fellow RPG developer tri-Ace was brought into assist with the games programming, art, and design. You may know tri-Ace from titles such as the Star Ocean series and Valkyrie Profile. Development for Final Fantasy XIII-2 began sometime around March or Arpil 2010. Most of the key designers and management team came over from Final Fantasy XIII, including director Motomu Toriyama and composer Masashi Hamauzu. Naoshi Mizuta and Mitsuto Suzuki also assisted with the soundtrack. The game has sold around 3.1 million copies as of January 2013. 300,000 copies have been sold through Steam, where it was released on December 11, 2014. Toriyama originally intended XIII-2 to take place a whopping 900 years after the original game. Once he realized how much of a pain in the ass establishing a backstory for this time gap would be, he decided to make it a time travel game. He wanted Lightning to be happy one day, and felt the need to have Serah take a more active role, since she was crystallized in the first Final Fantasy XIII. Apparently the early concept had Serah travelling alone with Mog. Yoshinori Kitase felt that the dialogue between these two characters was quite girly, almost camp and a bit over the top”, so they developed the character Noel. They didn’t want the stark tonal difference that we see between Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2, so they went for a much darker storyline. The team also learned a few other things, and decided to avoid using l’Cie and fal’Cie, as they deemed them difficult to understand. Interestingly enough, there was initially a plan to link the story of Final Fantasy Type-0 to Final Fantasy XIII-2 via Valhalla, but these plans were discarded.   Setting Up the Plot: Final Fantasy XIII-2 takes place a whopping three years after the events of Final Fantasy XIII. At this point, Sanctum has collapsed, and Cocoon’s inhabitants have moved down to Gran Pulse. Sanctum has been replaced by the technocratic government known as the Academy, run by none other than Hope Estheim. The game jumps around multiple different time periods, even including parallel versions of the same places. These are accessed via the Historia Crux. The game takes place mostly on Gran Pulse and Cocoon, but players also visit the Void Beyond, a sort of limbo between time periods, and Valhalla; the capital of the goddess Etro. Valhalla is located at the end of time where Etro stores the dark energy Chaos from destroying the timeline.   Story:   Paradoxes are popping up all across the timeline, and our heroine of Final Fantasy XIII, Lightning, has been written out of history, and only Serah remembers that she came back with the pary after Lightning and co saved Cocoon. Serah settles down in New Bodhum, but can’t shake the feeling that her sister lives on. It turns out that the mysterious energy known as Chaos, dragged Lightning to Valhalla. This was a result of Etro releasing Lightning and her friends from their crystal status as a thank you for saving Cocoon. Etro closed the gate between realms to keep Chaos out, but then fell into a deep sleep. Lightning is now Etro’s Knight, charged with protecting her from Caius Ballad, a bad man who wants to kill Etro to destroy the timeline. Caius was made immortal by Etro when she gave him her heart, known as the Heart of Chaos. Lightning, realizing that she needs a hand since she’s caught in an unending battle with Caius, reaches out to a young man named Noel Kreiss for help. Noel, who was chosen by Etro to become a time traveler, gets sent to New Bodhum to find Serah and bring her to Lightning. Noel meets up with Serah and finds out that she can see visions of the future, and is also allowed to use time gates, and access the Historia Crux. Noel and Serah travel the world to different eras solving paradoxes along the way. Their objective is to prevent the shit-tastic future that Noel comes from. He is the last man at the end of the world, after all. This happens in a timeline where the crystallized Cocoon fell from the sky. When Hope Estheim learns of this timeline, he sets out to prevent Cocoon’s eventual planet shattering fall. While our party is out and about, they learn that Snow has also become a time traveler, which is why he never returned from XIII’s ending as well. This is when the party first learns about Yeul, a seeress protected by her immortal guardian Caius, until the last Yeul died in Noel’s time period. Noel is disturbed by meeting various Yeuls throughout his adventures, since he wanted to become the Guardian to Yeul from his timeline. Yeul’s soul isn’t able to return to the chaos of the unseen world, and she is continually reincarnated with Caius as her Guardian as “blessed” by Etro. Seeing Yeul die over and over drove Caius mad, and spurred his desire to collapse the timeline in order to end Yeul’s cycle of suffering. Caius then creates paradoxes along the timeline to cultivate the perfect conditions in which to let Chaos consume the mortal realm. Our pary sets out to stop them, even after discovering that Serah also has the power of the seeress, which eats away at her very existence with every vision she has. These are triggered by the changes in the timeline through solving paradoxes. Serah and Noel finally meet up with Lightning, and move in on Caius. The party first fights him in 500 AF Academia, and then in Valhalla. Once Caius is defeated, he tells the party that he’s killed Lightning, and then impales himself on Noel’s sword, killing the already weakened Etro. The party returns to Academia in 500 af, where Vanille and Fang have been rescued from the falling pillar. We also see a very Titan AE esque new Cocoon called “Bhunivelze”. Serah then dies in front of Noel from the shock of the changes. The sky is rent asunder by dark clouds, and Chaos breaks free into the realm, and permanently warps things. Noel then realizes that they did exactly what Caius wanted by destroying the Heart of Chaos, and though Etro died, Caius is still alove and bound to the chaos. Serah’s dying spirit assures lightning that they will see each other again, and we then get a scene showing Lightning on the throne in Crystal Stasis on the throne in Etro’s temple. If you take the time to complete the additional storylines in the game, you get an additional scene showing Caius on the throne stating that the goddess is gone forever, and that he and Yeul can begin a life without their curses. Gameplay: The game features many of the combat elements of its predecessor, resurrecting the Paradigm and crystarium systems. It also introduces a system that allows players to capture beasts to fight alongside protagonists Serah and Noel. XIII-2 features a modified version of the old school random battles. Enemies will randomly appear on the map, and a timer spawns. The player can attack monsters before the time runs out, starting the battle with a preemptive strike. Battles take place similarly to Final Fantasy XIII, though you do have the option to switch party leaders. A game over is obtained once all human players have been defeated. The paradigm system offers stat increases, and isn’t locked like in Final Fantasy XIII. Beasts that have been captured are also leveled up, and have their own crystarium branches, though materials purchased from Chocobolina or collected through battles. Monsters have their own form of limit breaks, known as Feral Links, and vary from beast to beast. Final Fantasy XIII-2 also originated the Wound Damage. This is where a target members max HP can only be restored through healing items (we’re looking at you, Final Fantasy XV). Final Fantasy XIII-2 also uses Cinematic Action sequences that force the player to mash buttons. Conversations also have variants, as the player gets to choose what response to give. There are also Temporal Rifts. These are puzzle-esque minigames necessary to advance.   Remixes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhODT_HsPdg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvzbPhcM2Nw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkyBeHF3vXs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vq_QGAAUbzE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcP6tTTcD1w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOp4hob-4oE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBeiuhb36RY

This time, we finish up our review of Final Fantasy x-2. We discuss the design, music, and legacy of the game. We also move on to read, and discuss some of our listener reviews, and answer their questions about the game. Enjoy the finale! FFX-2   Final Fantasy X-2 was released for the ps2 on March 13th, 2003 in Japan, on November 18th in america, and February 19th, 2004 in Europe. Later, an HD remaster would come for the Ps3 and finally the Ps4 just last year.   It was to be the first ever direct sequel to a main-series final Fantasy game. There was no plans for a sequel, but with the short video called Eternal calm (which was released with a special edition of FFX in Japan) was so well received by fans that they decided to continue X’s story. Although many people in the company were hesitant about doing a sequel to X (especially Kazushige Nojima), Yoshinori Kitase decided that his team was ready for a challenge.   Not only was their challenge to do a sequel, but to attempt to make a game centered entirely around female characters. The game was also attempting to go away from the Macho female characters most hollywood action movies star. This created a light-hearted feel for the entire game. A brain-hurting difference from the more somber Final Fantasy X.   There was also a purposeful change in theme for the game, FFX was all about gaining independence, while X2 would be about the consequences of independance.   The development time for X2 was very short compared to that of most FF games (according to Tetsuya Nomura), taking an estimated year-and-a-half less time than the development of X. This was due to all of the reuse of many character models, it’s not like they had to start from scratch.   The music would be composed by Noriko Matsueda and Takahito Eguchi (composers for the much-maligned game “The Bouncer”). The most famous song from the game (one of 2 pop songs) was the ballad “1000 words” sung by sung by Kuni Koda in Japan, and Jade Villalon for the English edition.   X2 would go on to sell 1.94 million copies in Japan (the highest selling game of that year) and 1.85 Million in America. It was also well acclaimed (more so in Japan) for it’s departure from the Final Fantasy form, it’s focus on side-quests, it’s political background, and it’s overall uniqueness from anything players had seen before.   But I ask you, does unique really mean good? STORY   So… The uh story starts out at a fucking terrible pop concert with the “what can I do for you?” song blaring out of our TV speakers. Someone who looks like Yuna is singing terribly and YRP comes to save...Yuna’s garment grid from a disgusting looking woman named Lablanc.   What is a garment grid? YRP stands for Yuna, Rikku, and a new smoking hot emo chick named “Paine”, and they make up the Gullwings (y’know, not enough nicknames for the group). They are a group of sphere hunters searching the world for rare spheres… and stealing them from people who they think shouldn’t have them.   When Yuna finds a sphere with what looks like Tidus on it, she sphere hunts even harder for the missing pieces. Also on the sphere, a dangerous weapon, the vegnagun, is shown to be hidden somewhere in spira. A weapon powerful enough to destroy Spira, apparently.   In the midst of all the sphere hunting and the Leblanc Syndicate (functioning like a lame team rocket) attempting to snatch the spheres from under our heroes noses, are the political factions of the Youth league and New Yevon. The Youth league, young ruffian sphere hunters looking to educate the world about the past; New Yevon, holding onto the teachings of the faith that failed them in FFX. THese two fractions never really do any harm to one another or fight for power in any real world sense, but hey, that’s ffx2.   With the new threat of Vegnagun, Nooj (leader of the Youth League), sets off to destroy the Vegnagun, but is possessed by Shuyin (the Tidus-looking dude). Chasing after him, Yuna falls into the farplane where the Spirit of Shuyin reunites with whom he thinks is “Lenne”, apparently a famous popstar Shuyin was unable to save with the power of Vegnagun from the Zanarkand he belongs to… 1000 years in the past.   A quick aside, who is this shuyin guy and why does he look like Tidus? (not actually explained in this game, but we can figure it out)   The reason Shuyin mistakes Yuna for Lenne is because Yuna is wearing her dress sphere. Soon Yuna begins to relive Lenne’s memories, and eventually uses her singing ability and songwriting skills to bring the people of Spira together for…… a concert.   After this, Yuna, The Lablanc syndicate, members of The Youth League, as well as members of New Yevon, team up to finally destroy Vegnagun and the spirit of Shuyin who tries to control it.   After all is said and done, Spira is saved, and The Youth League compromises with New Yevon.   The end?   Taken from neoseeker.com:   Good Ending As Yuna is walking in the flower field in the Farplane, press "X" and Yuna will hear a whistle. She looks around to hear where it's coming from. That little Fayth guy will appear and tell you that he's heard your wish to see Tidus again. He will then ask you if you want to see him again and you have to answer. If you really hate Tidus and answer "I'm fine with the way it is," Yuna will tell the Fayth that she doesn't need to see him because he's in her heart. The Fayth will disappear and you'll just get the Normal Ending. Assuming that you chose "I want to be with him" the Fayth will tell you that he'll try to bring him back, but there's no promises. Yuna will walk away and you'll see the cut scene for the Normal Ending. After the credits run through, you'll see the scene at the end of FFX where Tidus is in the water. This time, he'll emerge outside Besaid Island. He whistles and swims towards the shore, at which time the Celsius comes roaring in, and Yuna jumps out and embraces Tidus. Yuna asks if he's the real thing to which he answers, "what do you think?" Yuna nods in agreement. Paine and Rikku look on, smiling for their friend from the Celsius. As they're hugging,Wakka shouts out from the shore. Most of the population of the Island is there witnessing their reunion, including Lulu and the new baby Vidina. Yuna and Tidus agree to go meet them and start running towards the shore. Tidus tells Yuna that she's changed. She responds by saying that a lot of things have happened. Tidus yells out that he wants to hear about it. The camera zooms out to a fade. Explanation? (a guy from reddit)   I think it's because the fayth felt indebted to Yuna because she released them from their dreaming at the end of X, and she also saved them at the end of X-2. Because the little boy/Bahamut asks Yuna if she wants to meet someone, and that's how you unlock the "Good" ending. So maybe he and the rest of Yuna's aeon's fayth dreamed up Tidus again? As kind of a thank you and compensation for Yuna's work. I'm not too sure. This is just my theory of it.

Development History: Dirge of Cerberus was born during the development of Advent Children. It was part of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, along with Before Crisis, and Crisis Core. Yoshinori Kitase had decided that Dirge of Cerberus would be a shooter, based on his love for the series. They threw in some role-playing elements, due to the lack of appeal for a pure action game among developers.   Square chose Vincent due to the possibilities for expanding his backstory, which we all know was very limited in Final Fantasy VII. Before the team started working on Dirge of Cerberus, they considered using other gun toting characters from Final Fantasy, such as Barret Wallace, Irvine Kinneas or Yuna from X-2.. I feel like we all dodged a bullet there. They eventually settled on Vincent, once they solidified the expansion of the Final Fantasy VII universe.   Dirge of Cerberus was anounced in September of 2004, and was scheduled for release in Japan in 2005. The game originally had an online version, but they removed the multiplayer support due to the popularity of PLayOnline, and a lack of PS2 HDD support. The missions that were originally part of the multiplayer mode were turned into secret unlockable missions in our version of the game. There was also an EASY MODE available in Japan that was removed. The game was released on January 26th 2008 in Japan, and August 15th, 2006 in North America. It has sold around 1.5 million copies worldwide, and has a 57% on Metacritic.   Story Dirge starts out with Vincent and Yuffie helping to evacuate Midgar, just before it is destroyed by Meteor. We find Hojo unconscious over the controls, stuff blows up, and we move three years in the future where Vincent is chilling in Kalm. Kalm is attacked, and we meet up with Reeve, who is now part of the World Regenesis Organization, whose main goal is recovery after the events of FF VII. The unknown enemies capture and kill some citizens.   We later learn that the people who attacked Kalm are part of a covert Shinra organization called Deepground. These are, once again, genetically altered soldiers. Vincent finds out that he’s on their chopping block, due to the Protomateria that he carries within himself. He uses this materia to control the Chaos within. Deepground wants the materia to control Omega. Chaos is described as “Omega’s squire to the heavens.” The Chaos gene was injected into Vincent thirty years prior, by Lucrecia Crescent, a research assistant to Hojo. Vincent had the hots for this one.   Searching for more info, Vincent goes to Nibelheim, where Lucrecia studied Omega and Chaos. While checking out the manor, Vincent get’s jumped by Rosso, a super hot ruskie chick that rips the Protomateria out of Vincent’s chest. She is a member of Deepground, but is in an elite group called the Tsviets. Weiss is the leader, then Nero, Shelke, and Azul are also members. She would have given him a “happy ending”, but Yuffie came in and saved him last minute. The two return to the WRO headquarters and find that Deepthroat has launched an assault on the base. The WRO end up capturing Shelke, a member of Deepthroat that is synaptically connected to Lucrecia’s memories, which will allow the WRO to complete the research on Omega. Shelkes sister Shalua Rui, high ranking scientist and catastrophic money shot survivor, discovers that Omega is a WEAPON. Omega is supposed to absorb the Lifestream and move to another planet, leaving everyone and everything behind to die. Deepthroat’s endgame is to kill a bunch of people in order to trick the planet into activating Omega early. Vincent and the Dubya Arr Oh attack the Deepground headquarters in Midgar. Reeve and friends battle soldiers and attempt to destroy the Mako reactors, currently feeding Omega, Vincent dives straight into the heart of enemy territory to battle Weiss. He finds Weiss dead, but as Omega stirs, so does Weiss. We then find out that Weiss is being possessed by Hojo, who uploaded his consciousness into the Worldwide Network, and then took possession of Weiss' body while he was attempting to find a cure for a virus. Nero, an enemy fought earlier in the game, emerges from the Lifestream and destroys Hojo. He then “merges” with his brother to fuse with Omega. Vincent then transforms into Chaos to destroy Omega Weiss. Shelke finds more info on Lucrecia’s Protomateria, and Vincent takes on Omega. Omega sprouts Lifestream wings and tries to leave the planet, but Vincent destroys it. He’s seen alter visiting the tomb of Lucrecia, stating that Chaos and Omega have returned to the planet.   REMIXES: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3wvbTMcitw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtcxmG2sha8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31vEvY1oX8Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLPy7CMs87Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xFY_MPHQq0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0Id7inOneM&index=20&list=PL3D098A642BA0CC60 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRTbXmt0M0o&index=7&list=PL3D098A642BA0CC60

Final Fantasy VIII   Final Fantasy VIII was released for the PlayStation in 1999; February 11th in Japan, September 9th for North America, and October 27th for Europe. The game arrived on PC for Windows in 2000. It has also been available in the PlayStation Network since 2009. The game was developed and published by Square. Final Fantasy VIII’s development began in 1997, while Square was working on the English localization of Final Fantasy VII. The beloved and treasured Hironobu “The Gutch” Sakaguchi served as the games executive producer, while primarily working on his own demise; which takes the form of 2001’s Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. This lent the position of director for the game to Yoshinori Kitase. The battle system for Final Fantasy VIII was designed by Kitase and none other than Hiroyuki Ito. For the visual design, Kitase knew he wanted a combination of fantasy and realism. He aimed to create a cast of characters who appeared to be ordinary people. Tetsuya Nomura and art director Yusuke Naora worked tirelessly to achieve this feel by creating realistically proportioned characters. Naora also attempted to enhance realism by bright lighting effects while creating appropriate shadows. They also used motion capture technology to give the games characters more lifelike movements in the FMV sequences. The designers felt compelled to invert the atmosphere of the previous games, which were themed as light emerging from darkness. This decision was easy for the team, since they almost all worked on Final Fantasy VII, and felt a new direction was a good idea. The world designs were improved from the last title, due to the experience the team had working within their graphical boundaries. Another part of the “realism” theme that Kitase so desired, was noted with the realistically inspired architecture for the areas. This is noted with the Ancient Egyptian and Greek architecture. We also see a nod to Paris, while throwing a super high tech city in the mix to give it a different, futuristic feeling as well. In an attempt to maintain a foreign atmosphere, the characters designs were predominantly European in appearance. The first Final Fantasy VIII character to be developed was Squall. Nomura gave squall a fur jacket as a challenge to the games FMV designers. Thankfully, they accepted the challenge, and the jacket looks super realistic. Even if it seems slightly out of place… Nomura also found a place for some previously designed characters, such as Edea, Fujin, and Raijin. Nomura designed Edea based on the style of Yoshitaka Amano. Final Fantasy VIII also featured the series’ first lyrics based song. This took the form of Eyes on Me, by Faye Wong.   The game received positive reviews, and was also commercially successful. In just two days after the North American release, Final Fantasy VIII became the top selling video game in the US, and would remain in that spot for over two weeks. As of March 31, 2003 the game had shipped 8.15 million copies worldwide. This was the fastest selling Final Fantasy title at the time.
