Forrest, Conan Neutron, and Kt Baldassaro talk about Katsuhiro Otomo's 1988 animated cyberpunk action film Akira! Based on Katsuhiro Otomo's manga series of the same name, Akira is an action packed and incredibly stylish cautionary tale about scientific experimentation and the mindset that led to the development of nuclear weapons. In a Post-World War 3 Neo-Tokyo.. rebuilt after a massive explosion.. biker gangs roam a city with a badly corrupt government and increasingly powerful military that's on the brink of collapse. The Capsules, led by Shotaro Kaneda and his hapless best friend Tetsuo Shima, get thrown into the middle of a story that involves a secret government program to experiment on children, the anti-government resistance, a mysterious figure named Akira, and 3 psychic children called the Espers #akira #manga #katsuhirootomo #toho #epic #marvel #cyberpunk #tokyo #neo #neotokyo #moviepodcast #sciencefiction #scienceexperiment #moviepodcast #filmpodcast #movielovers #animation Akira is widely credited with bringing a new level of interest to American Audiences who had only just started our fascination with Manga and Japanese Pop Culture. It has also been pointed out that it got some predictions.. like the 2020 Tokyo Olympics... eerily right. Working alongside what little remains of the Empire, the Returners seek to broker peace with the Espers whose rage threatens to destroy the entire world.
Terra learns of her origins in the Esper world, and the Returners resolve to recruit the remaining Espers into their war against the Empire.
The Returners are tasked with rescuing Espers from the Imperial Continent, but to get there, they must form an alliance with Setzer Gabbiani, a gambling vagabond who finds freedom from society's narrow views of morality aboard his airship, the Blackjack. The Returners concoct a plan to meet Setzer by tricking him into kidnapping Celes from tonight's Opera House performance.
Sean's head explodes fighting the good fight against the evil telepaths of Scanners (1981), David Cronenberg's first real hit about a mind reader sent on a covert mission to infiltrate a group of other ESPers and kill their leader. We're back to our time travel again this month, heading back to 2006 where we'll be exploring our favourite songs from the year Pluto had it's planetary status cruelly ripped from it's icy mountains. We discuss Pop, Folk, Post-Metal, Emo, & Whatever the hell Scott Walker was doing at that point. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - The Aliens, Lily Allen, Brand New, Camera Obscura, Jarvis Cocker, Cult Of Luna, Devin Townsend Band, The Dresden Dolls, Espers, The Flaming Lips, The Hold Steady, Isis, Kayo Dot, The Knife, LCD Soundsystem, Jenny Lewis, Mogwai, Satyricon, Snow Patrol (Ft. Martha Wainwright), Pernice Brothers, The Pipettes, Damien Rice, Sonic Youth, Srapping Young Lad, Justin Timberlake, The Twilight Singers, Scott Walker, Willard Grant Conspiracy, Yo La Tengo, & Thom Yorke Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7EpWTstCYdmon3A4fV9YEM?si=69747f8425494896 Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQ If you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdg Ian's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqA and Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9Nw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows - 1st place - 20 points 2nd place - 18 points 3rd place – 16 points 4th place – 14 points 5th place – 12 points 6th place – 9 points 7th place – 7 points 8th place – 5 points 9th place – 3 points 10th place -1 point Hosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey B Guest starring Helen Jackson-Brown. KEFKA PLEEAASSSEEEE!!! We're back... not just back with a new episode, but back to our FINAL FANTASY series! This time, it's the Internet's number-one favorite of the entire series, Final Fantasy VI! (Or III, if you grew up in North America in the mid-90s...) The last iteration of the wrongly-numbered Finals Fantasy, the hosts finally got to have a rose-tinted glasses segment for this one, since they have finally caught up to themselves, and played this one growing up... very exciting times! With parties chock-full of dozens of characters, they worked with Magitek, found Espers, fought Kefka, and most importantly, BODY-SLAMMED A FREAKIN' TRAIN! Hop on board (but not on board the body-slammed train, that thing was freakin' evil, and also, we do not recommend being aboard trains while they are flipped upside-down, for the health and safety of all involved), click play, give it a listen, and then go ahead and leave a five-star review (hint, hint!) Let's do it!
We meet one of the greatest characters in franchise history, Celes Chere, and get introduced to a new element of Terra. Our heroes learn about a fateful coin flip and a long-lost love, and what an ancient war has to do with saving their friend.
Stepping off the beaten path to introduce current-year S.W.O.R.D. cast member, the Mutant Menace of Mentallo! We're broadening our horizons here at The Essential X-Lapsed... checking out series' that I never would have before! Today's episode comes from the Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. portion of Strange Tales -- Hydra has fallen, ESPers are the new hotness, and Nick Fury tries to get TV from Tokyo! Jess is back with the team, but The Empire isn't going to slow down. Narshe has the cash, Figaro has the tech, but we still lack the manpower required to enact any kind of heavy assault against Imperial Forces. Well who else hates the Empire? That's right, the Espers do. Our Mission: Contact the Espers, and recruit their aid to help stop the Empire. Today's bonus Balance and Ruin music is Illusionary by Sole Signal. It's a mix of the esper cave music that we hear a whole tone of this in this episode. There's no major genre changes or anything like some mixes have, just quality work expanding the original track up past what the SNES could do. If you like, go sign up for the Patreon.
Starting today we'll be going through Final Fantasy 6! Grab your magitek controls, and let's march off through a field of snow. And if you like me doing this kind of stuff, you can sign up for the Patreon.

Before Miyazaki changed the game, before ANY anime had hit it big in the West, before anime was taken seriously as an art form, there was Akira. A legendary film written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, based on the manga by the same name, Akira is an ultraviolent, devastating portrayal of a post apocalyptic Neo Tokyo ravaged by Biker Gangs, ESPers, and the wounds of the old wars. Animated with a smoothness and fidelity never matched before or since, Akira still stands as an unusurped example of what animation is capable of. A complicated, horrifying story of destruction and rebirth, with complicated questions and very few answers. Joining us today is Dr. Nona Carter, a brilliant scholar of Japanese culture and literature. Having spent many of her formative years growing up in Japan, join us in hearing about her fascinating background, the scars of Hiroshima, and why Japan is the world's only post-apocalyptic society. Most people are content with their average and somewhat boring normal life. This is true for Kyon until he meets a girl called Haruhi Suzumiya. Haruhi is only interested in Aliens, Time Travelers, Espers and other supernatural beings. Accidently, Kyon suggests that Haruhi makes her own club to appease her boredom and unknowingly becomes its first member. However, when all of Haruhi's wishes start coming true...Well, Kyon must say goodbye to his normal life. This week Condor and Falcon watch the first 2 seasons of the classic, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Released to critical acclaim, Marissa Nadler’s third album, Songs III: Bird on the Water, is a record which sees the her begin to expand her sonic palette. Joined by folk-cum-psychedelic rock outfit Espers on a few of the tracks (the album was produced by founding member Greg Weeks), her sound is augmented with hints of synth, electric guitar, cello, percussion and harp. For the first time she really begins to truly channel the American gothic vibes that she’d be tagged with for years, and the results are pretty interesting. As it turns out, her back catalogue was much bigger than Mark initially realised, so with that in mind we give as much of discography a going over as we can, bar the odd bandcamp only release. The results are mixed, with split opinion amongst the troops about Nadler’s oeuvre. So what do you think? Is this an unsung classic or is it just a wee bit meh? Vote on Twitter below. Tikām izdevuma "The Economist" feļetonists ar pseidonīmu Charlemagne jeb Kārlis Lielais savā rakstā „Padarīsim Eiropu atkal vienmuļu!” raksta: Ja pagājušajā desmitgadē jūs jautājāt eirokrātam: „Kas nodarbina jūsu prātu?”, tad atbilde parasti bija dramatiska. Līdz šim miruši 2006 pacienti, 136 no tiem - pagājušajā diennaktī. Ārpus Ķīnas līdz šim zināmi 926 saslimušie, no kuriem miruši 3. Vissmagāk no epidēmija izraisītajām ekonomiskajām sekām var ciest Japāna, kuras ekonomika jau kopš pagājušā gada pēdējā ceturkšņa atrodas recesijā.

Except for Toma, who isn't bright at all and harnesses the Imagine Breaker -- the power of negation. He lives a dull life of remedial classes until Index, a girl with 103,000 magical grimroires and a walking church for a robe, literally crashes into his life.

It’s rare to get a do-over when your world is destroyed, but the alternate-dimension bending and timeline restoration powers of the Chrono Cross promise just that. Serge is ready to pass on his timeline white-out device and three Final Fantasy heroines with post-apocalyptic homes will do whatever it takes to get their hands on it. Terra Branford of Final Fantasy VI, Tifa Lockhart of Final Fantasy VII, and Lightning of Final Fantasy XIII fight it out in the Temporal Vortex using all the magic and combat skills in their respective arsenals. Claire schools everyone on the power of Espers; Dan fondly recalls the time Tifa made pseudo-Sephiroth cry; MeganBob bashes fictional horses, and Judge Miles takes the advocates on a field trip to bizarre and familiar place in the Lightning round.

In this short episode, I talk about how Terra's theme is reused throughout the first half of Final Fantasy VI, and how that might trick players into thinking she's the main character and that there's not a surprising (and depressing) second half to this 1994 RPG masterpiece. This plus all due praise for Nobuo Uematsu's finale to the series' Super Nintendo era. In this beefcake of an episode, we discuss the greatness that is Final Fantasy VI. We discuss the intricate relationships between certain characters, such as the love story between Celes and Locke, the story of Cyan and his family, the intricacies of Terra being the "main" character, the relationship between the two royal brothers Sabin and Edgar. We also discuss Shadow's stories, both the one where he doesnt die when the world gets destroyed as well as his intended ending. We discuss the soundtrack of the game, referring to it as Nobou Uematsu's masterpiece work. We also discuss how the game took the Super Nintendo to it's limits, and how it still looks good today. We talk about getting the Espers, and also delve into whether or not you should get Ragnarok the Esper, or Ragnarok the sword. We also discuss a little bit of news regarding Final Fantasy XIV and XV, where now in XIV you can fight Ultros and his friend Typhon. Enjoy our thoughts on this excellent Rpg!
In this episode, you'll hear five kind of soft songs for whenever you need a break from the hustle and bustle. The songs are "Echoes of Espers" by John Anealio, "Dáma, pán a tulipán" by Cymbelín, "El Paso" by Silvestre y La Naranja, "I Don't Understand" by Merchants of Seven, and "Old Home Movies" by The Botticellis. Please note, there's some cussin' in "I Don't Understand".
MICHAEL DARKHALLOW, JAY ROSELLNewsA Ghostly BorealisRelatively new findings change the way that science understands how the so-called "northern lights" are understood, and raise troubling questions about if we're really alone when we head out for a stroll underneath the moon and stars. Death By TelekinesisAfter an investigation spanning years, a report from Turkish officials places the blame for a spate of suicides in 2006 and 2007 on those individuals with telekinetic abilities. Were they assassins, or simply untrained ESPers who inadvertently sent four engineers to their deaths? The team talks about the efficacy of the conclusion, the one and only alternate possible explanation (according to the Turkish task force), and how telekinesis may or may not be a danger to people's lives on a daily basis.ICTC9 And Earth's Terraformation? The ICTC9 conference in South Africa was held this week, ostensibly to discuss our continued existence amid the sea of cyanobacteria that surrounds us as it grows ever more toxic to human and human-supporting life. There may, however, have been a hidden agenda known only to those in attendance within certain closed-door sessions… Are the world's scientific leaders in biology now beginning to suspect, as we do, that we're being terraformed by a hostile alien species?Conspiracy Of TheoristsTriggered by an article he encountered recently in Scientific American, Michael espouses his frustration with one contributor who seems to have a conspiracy theory of their own… that conspiracy theorists are simple minded and a danger to civilization. Michael opposes this with his own view, suggesting that, as much as the author in question may be sincere, he should be wary of painting himself with his own brush. And More!
Shock World Service 047 Dance of the Dead by Gareth Averill (Great Lakes Mystery) 31/10/2012 Dublin, Ireland 1. Suspiria - Intro (Suspiria OST) Kicking things off in style are the Italian devil-prog stalwarts, Goblin. This track, given much less attention than the much celebrated, 'Main Theme', features on the soundtrack to seminal Giallo classic, Suspiria, directed by Dario Argento, 1977. 2. Armando Sciascia - Circuito Chiuso (Impressions in Rhythm & Sound) Italians do it better. This is a psychedelic horror-funk lost treasure from Armando Sciascia, better known for his violin-driven orchestral scores. This track broods along, with dark tones and if you were to remove all but the evil electric piano, you would end up with something straight from a horror movie. This comes all the way from 1970. 3. Espers - Widow's Weed (Espers II) A cold, autumnal lament, with nods to dark English psych-folk from Philly band, Espers. Widow's weed takes you on a walk through a golden forest at dusk, searching for the seed that has grown the widow's weed. Things aren't quite all they seem to be. 4. Ennio Morricone - Magic & Ecstasy (The Exorcist II OST) Ennio Morricone is a man who just will not stop. When wading through his vast catalogue, you occasionally take an unexpected turn, and this track is no exception. This track makes you feel like the dark forces that want your soul, are first going to take you out and show you the night of your life. Morricone and horror films make the perfect match. 5. Popol Vuh - Mantra 1 (Nosferatu OST) A haunting track from Werner Herzog's take on the tale of Nosferatu. Klaus Kinksi is not the only terrifying aspect of this film, as the slow sitar-like instrument becomes the musical manifestation of the phantom der nacht. 6. Zombie Zombie - Driving This Road Until Death Sets You Free (A Land For Renegades) This French duo are clearly alumni from the college of Carpenter. Whilst I feel that their efforts have been off-the-mark, this hits the nail on the head. Furthermore, the video, (a G.I Joe-style take on Carpenter's, 'The Thing') is a joy to behold. The shrieking modular wails become the howling dogs from the movie. Brilliant. 7. Goblin - Patrick (Patrick OST) Goblin make a brief return here, with a short and sweet piece of music from Australian horror film, Patrick. Slowly oscillating cold synth stabs followed by a signature dark arpeggio makes this a classic Goblin number. 8. Mount Eerie - Over Dark Water (Clear Moon) Making the first of two appearances on this mix, this is a track from the man who just keeps on giving. Releasing two albums back to back this year, Mount Eerie creates a fascinating blend of brutally dark intricate folk songs, whilst drawing on black metal influences to create something equally beautiful and disturbing. My favorite release of the year. There is also a strong notion of the element of water in these albums. The end of this track ends with a simple line, 'To the ocean', followed by a cascading black metal almost blast beat explosion. Chills up the spine, every time. That water is very, very dark indeed. 9. Lubos Fiser - The Sermon (Valerie and Her Week of Wonders) A track from a recent gem by the good folks at Finders Keepers who dig so deep into those record crates, that you expect them to meet with the devil himself. Some of their resurrected discoveries sound like that could be the case. This track is a haunting minimal choral piece from Eastern European vampire flick, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. Chilling stuff. Be sure to check out the many great releases on Finders Keepers for more musical gore and extravagance. SOUNDCLOUD WONT ALLOW ANY MORE CHARACTERS SO CAN'T FINISH DESCRIPTION.

In this episode we speak with fellow podcaster Oraia Helene from Between the Earth and Stars and talk about her recent changes with her name, doing her shows, how she balances her scientific side with her magickal side, and to close we discuss her work as a writer and podcaster and have a great time while doing it. We also speak with Inanna Gabriel from Misanthrope Press regarding the new pagan story anthology Etched Offerings Voices from the Cauldron of Story. In A Corner in the Occult, we learn about Scientist, Thelemite and 20th century Occultist Jack Parsons who, interestingly enough, has a crater on the moon named after him. Listen and found out why! And later in the show we discuss the Powers of the Sphinx in The Essence of Magick. To know, to dare, to will, to keep silent, and to go are crucial to the developing student of mysticism. Also in the episode we feature a great song from the Philadelphia band Espers an emerging indie band and we close the show with a special musical holiday treat from SCHOLAR the occultist and rapper.
