Those of us who are followers of Jesus Christ are called to bear each others burdens. We are to pray for each other. As friends, we are to love at all times and be there for others during their times of adversity. One thing I've learned as I've spent time with Christian kids is that so many of them battle with loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Even though they are followers of Christ, their adolescent struggles seem to be no different than the struggles faced by their non-believing peers. We are being told that the mental health crisis among our kids is reaching epidemic proportions, and almost two in five teens say they are not getting the support they need. Of course, those of us who are parents need to be more diligent in our efforts to nurture our kids in the faith and support them in any way we can. But there's a role the larger body of Christ must play. You may not have teens of your own, but you can and must endeavor to support the kids in your church through your prayers and presence.

Jennie Monness is joining me this week to break down the difference between developmentally normal (and healthy!) anxiety and signs that your child may need additional support—and how you can adjust your parenting approach to effectively support both.   Together we explore:   Why our instinct to remove discomfort may actually make anxiety worse—and what to do instead. How to support children with separation anxiety, and the surprising stressors that often go unnoticed during transitions. Utilizing strategies to help your child feel more grounded, like routines, visual schedules, and previewing. The difference between information gathering and reassurance seeking behaviors in children - and how knowing this difference can impact which parenting tool you use to best support them. Dr. Sarah's simple “anxiety formula” that helps you know exactly where to focus your support. How to get to the root of your child's fear, when it isn't so obvious to decode and identify for parents. Play therapy techniques and somatic work you can use to explore the fears that are hard for your child to talk about or that they are avoiding outside of playful environments.   Whether your child is anxious about school drop-off, starting something new, or just seems to struggle with big feelings, this conversation will help you feel more empowered to support them—without needing to rescue them from every hard emotion.     LEARN MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: https://www.jenniemonness.com/ https://www.unionsquareplay.com/ https://charmspring.com/   FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:

ABOUT THE EPISODE:Consider this your wakeup call: In 2023, the number of people using marijuana products daily surpassed those who use alcohol daily - even though three times as many people drink. Young people aged 18-25 make up the largest group of those daily users. As president of the Partnership to End Addiction for five years, Fred Muench, Ph.D. provided recovery information and resources about all substances, from alcohol to heroin. But when his team looked over their own helpline data, they noticed that calls about marijuana far outpaced every other substance. Most were calls from parents, and they weren't simply discovering that their children had begun using high-potency marijuana. Many were detailing their kids dropping out of school after daily use, or even showing frightening signs of cannabis-induced psychosis.Today, Fred is the founder and CEO of Clear30, a community-centered support app that invites people to change their relationship to weed. The app isn't just a repository of information, but a personalized, interactive support system for withdrawal and recovery. Clear30 invites daily users to take a 30-day break, examine their own symptoms, and find encouragement from others who are finding that high-potency marijuana isn't all it was promised to be.In this episode, Fred and I talk about the inception of Clear30, the specific support systems it can provide, the difference between male and female withdrawal symptoms, and the questionable marketing of marijuana products.EPISODE RESOURCES:The Clear 30 websiteThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereFind us on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. In this episode, Michael Shanahan is joined by experienced specialist dyslexia tutor Sally Andrew to discuss The Literacy Support Kit (LSK)—a comprehensive set of resources designed to support children for whom standard literacy intervention programs are too difficult. Sally Andrew Sally holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Dyslexia and Literacy from the University of York, UK. Sally has been tutoring students with dyslexia for 25 years and has trained many parents and educators in evidence-based multisensory interventions for dyslexia. Sally is the director of By Your Side Tutoring. Sally formally ran the popular Teaching Students with Dyslexia (TSD) suite of training for Specialist Multisensory Literacy Teachers. Sally co-developed the Literacy Support Kit and Word Cracker suite of morphology resources. Show notes Michael and Sally explore the challenges faced by students living with dyslexia, dysgraphia, intellectual disability, and fine motor difficulties, sharing strategies and practical solutions to bridge gaps in literacy instruction. They emphasize the importance of customized resources, multi-sensory learning, and breaking skills into fine-grained steps to ensure student success. Key Topics Discussed 1. Why Some Students Struggle with Standard Intervention Not all students progress at the expected rate in structured literacy programs. Some need more fine-grained steps to break down learning concepts. Kids living with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, and intellectual disability often require additional scaffolding. The LSK provides targeted resources to address these challenges. 2. The Importance of Teacher Discretion in Literacy Instruction Teaching should not be one-size-fits-all. Experienced tutors develop custom resources based on student needs. If a student is struggling with a concept, slowing down and focusing on prerequisite skills is essential. Using varied formats to present the same material helps build automaticity. 3. Supporting Kids with Alphabet Difficulties Many students, even in Year 5 or 6, do not truly know the alphabet beyond the song. Some students believe “LMNOP” is a single letter due to how they learned the alphabet song. Intervention strategies: Using picture alphabets to build phoneme awareness. Matching games to reinforce letter recognition. Writing letters over pre-written models to build confidence. 4. Helping Students Blend Sounds (Phonemic Awareness) Some students struggle to blend sounds into words, making decoding very difficult. Key strategies in LSK: Chunking sounds together rather than focusing on individual phonemes. Onset and rime activities (e.g., working on “at,” “it,” “in” before full words). Repeated exposure through varied activities to build automaticity. 5. Handwriting as a Literacy Barrier Fine motor control issues can make writing exhausting. Poor handwriting can lead to low confidence and avoidance of writing tasks. LSK handwriting support includes: Pre-writing activities (tracing, erasing letters, solving mazes). Cursive instruction to improve fluency. Explicit teaching of letter formation and spacing. 6. Keeping Students Engaged with Repetitive Learning Students need hundreds of repetitions to master basic literacy skills. Standard drills can be boring and frustrating. LSK provides a variety of engaging activities, including: Chunky Pig – A game reinforcing phoneme blending. Make-a-Chunk sheets – Matching and handwriting exercises. Tracking sheets – Strengthening phonemic awareness. Close reading sheets – Filling in missing words from context. 7. Addressing Sticking Points in Phonics Programs Some students get stuck on complex spelling rules (e.g., C/K rule, open/closed syllables). LSK removes these difficult concepts temporarily so students can continue making progress. Focus remains on: Mastering short vowel sounds before moving to long vowels. Learning suffixes before tackling multi-syllable words. 8. High-Frequency Words: A Key Component High-frequency words are essential for reading fluency. Traditional word lists cause stress for many students (e.g., weekly school spelling tests). LSK includes: Traceable worksheets for repeated practice. Snakes and Ladders game using high-frequency words. Word search puzzles for additional reinforcement. 9. The Power of Repetition and Daily Practice Flashcard Decks: Each new letter or sound is added to a child's personal deck. Spelling Drills: Structured practice with traceable letters for extra support. Daily reinforcement builds automaticity without overwhelming students. 10. Who Can Use the Literacy Support Kit? Teachers and tutors looking to support struggling students. Parents who want a structured, easy-to-follow literacy program. Intervention specialists who need additional materials to customize instruction. The LSK is simple enough that parents can use it at home, even without formal training. Resources & Links The Literacy Support Kit (LSK) Word Cracking Membership: Now includes LSK resources, morphology materials, and training courses. Games and Activities for Literacy Handwriting Support Resources Final Thoughts Sally and Michael reflect on their years of experience working with children living with learning difficulties and how the most challenging students make you a better teacher. They emphasize the importance of adapting instruction to fit individual student needs and giving students small successes to build confidence. Subscribe to stay updated on new resources and teaching strategies. Have questions or feedback? Leave a comment or contact us. Please note this episode and topic may act as a trigger for some people, and this episode is not suitable to listen to within earshot of children. In this episode, we are joined by Wayne Holdsworth, who shares his heart-wrenching story and important mission. On Tuesday, the 24th of October, Wayne's life was forever changed when he discovered that his son, Mac, had taken his own life at home in Victoria. Faced with the unimaginable task of telling his daughter, Daisy, that her brother had died, Wayne has turned this personal tragedy into a powerful crusade to prevent suicide. Wayne is now dedicated to raising awareness about the alarming rates of suicide in Australia. Last year alone, 801 people took their own lives in Victoria, with more than 3,200 across Australia. Wayne points out that these numbers are on the rise, creating an epidemic that surpasses the impact of COVID-19 in its devastation. In honour of his son, Wayne founded the charity "Smack Talk" and now travels the country sharing his story. Through his talks, he educates parents and communities about the warning signs of suicide and provides essential tips for supporting mental health. Wayne's mission is to spread awareness, educate others, and offer practical advice on how we can all contribute to supporting children's mental health and recognising the signs of distress. We talked about:  Wayne's story about how his son passed. How Smack Talk was started after his son passed away. Statistics and the impact of social media to children's mental health and brain development. Reasons some kids take their lives. Sextortion in social media. How the government could be an ally in making legislative reforms on social media usage. Warning signs of suicide and tips for helping people. How we can help. I hope you find this episode not only inspiring, but also educational and informative as Wayne shares his invaluable insights and experiences. Today, we're delving into a topic that's both profound and hopeful: the harm of childhood trauma and the incredible power of resilience. Joining me on the show is Dr. Marc D. Hauser, who's here to unravel these complex topics in a way that's accessible and empowering for all parents. Through his groundbreaking work, including his new book Vulnerable Minds: The Harms of Childhood Trauma and the Hope of Resiliency, which is what we're diving into today, Marc brings scientific evidence about childhood trauma to a broader audience and sheds light on the pathways to healing and growth. In this conversation, we explore what constitutes a traumatic experience and why neurodivergent children may be more vulnerable to their effects, as well as ACES, or Adverse Childhood Experiences, often misunderstood but profoundly influential in shaping a child's journey. Marc helps us understand their significance in the context of resilience.   About Marc Hauser Marc Hauser is a scientist, educator, author, consultant and public speaker. Hauser's scientific research, including over 300 published papers and seven books, has focused on how the brain evolves, develops, and is altered by damage and neurodevelopmental disorders, with an emphasis on the processes of learning and decision-making, as well as the impact of traumatic experiences on development. Hauser's educational and consulting work has focused on the implementation of quantitative, brain-based methods for teachers, clinicians, and doctors working with children who have different disabilities, including especially those that result from a history of traumatic experiences. Hauser earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Bucknell University, a PhD from UCLA and Post-doctoral fellowships from the University of Michigan, Rockefeller University, and University of California-Davis. From 1992-2011, he was a Professor at Harvard University. In 2013, he founded the company Risk-Eraser, dedicated to providing software and consulting to programs focusing on students in special education. His most recent book Vulnerable Minds, published in March 2024 by Avery-Penguin-Random House Publishing, New York.   Things you'll learn from this episode How Vulnerable Minds makes scientific evidence about childhood trauma accessible to a broader audience How traumatic experiences are defined The impact of trauma on neurodivergent children as well as ways in which these kids are more vulnerable to trauma What it means for a school to be trauma-informed in action What ACES are and how their assignment and meaning is frequently misinterpreted and misunderstood The role of nature and nurture when it comes to whether other not an experience results in trauma or is met with resiliency   Resources mentioned for the Harm of Childhood Trauma and the Hope of Resiliency Dr. Marc D. SHINING WITH ADHD  EPISODE #132: Building Resilience: Supporting Kids with ADHD + Anxiety The Childhood Collective 10/25/2023   SUMMARY It seems like being a parent is always trying to find the goldilocks in every situation. We want to be gentle but not too permissive; we want to be child-centered but not forget ourselves. We want to be open with our kids but want to maintain healthy boundaries. The list goes on and on. The experience is only heightened with ADHD, especially when there is a second challenge or diagnosis in play. Today, we're talking about ADHD and Anxiety. Anxiety is 2nd most common disorder that is diagnosed in kids with ADHD. According to the CDC, around 33% of kids with ADHD have anxiety. And the more concerning fact is that only around 60% of children who have an anxiety disorder ever go on to receive treatment. That means there are many kids out there suffering and not getting the tools they need to cope with their worries. In this episode, Lori from our TCC teams shares her knowledge on supporting kids with ADHD and Anxiety.  CONNECT WITH US We are Lori, Mallory, and Katie. The pandemic showed us all how quickly things can change, and as parents we had to face that not only for ourselves, but for our kids too. I invited Sarah Rosney, licensed clinical social worker, back on to the podcast to provide strategies for supporting our children (and ourselves) with navigating change. Whether the change has to do with a new baby, a new home, a new school, a new schedule, a divorce, a death, an illness, or even a new big kid bed...there are ways we can bridge both connection and communication with our children as we move through it. Sarah offers us the roadmap. Follow Sarah and soak up more of her support at @sarah_the_therapist on Instagram or you can learn more about Sarah's courses at https://sarahrosneylcsw.com/mindful-wellness-classroom/ To connect with Dr. Cassidy or learn more about her private practice, visit www.drcassidymft.com.
