The 2025 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, launching on March 18, promises another thrilling March Madness with its blend of powerhouse programs, emerging mid-majors, and inevitable surprises. The 68-team field, finalized on Selection Sunday, March 16, features 31 automatic qualifiers from conference tournaments and 37 at-large bids selected by the NCAA committee. With Selection Sunday now behind us, the bracket is set, and the First Four kicks off the action in Dayton, Ohio, on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 18-19, narrowing the field to 64. The tournament culminates at the Alamodome in San Antonio on April 7, but the opening days will shape the narrative. In the 2025 NCAA First Four, Xavier faced Texas on Wednesday, March 19, in a thrilling matchup. Xavier trailed by as much as 13 points but mounted a furious second-half comeback, fueled by hot shooting and a supportive Dayton crowd. The Musketeers erased the deficit, tying the game at 65 with eight minutes left, and finished with an 86-80 victory, led by Zach Freemantle's clutch scoring (15 points, including six in the final two minutes). Texas' Tre Johnson (18 points) couldn't stop the collapse, and Xavier advanced to face Illinois. On Tuesday, March 18, North Carolina dominated San Diego State in a lopsided 95-68 blowout. The Tar Heels, a controversial at-large pick, silenced doubters early, building a 24-point halftime lead. RJ Davis was unstoppable, going 6-for-6 from three-point range, while San Diego State never found its rhythm, trailing by as much as 33 in the second half. North Carolina moved on to play Ole Miss, proving they belonged in the field of 64. Thursday, March 20, 2025, marks the start of the NCAA Tournament's First Round, a 16-game marathon that ignites March Madness with wall-to-wall action. Across eight host cities—Lexington, Providence, Wichita, Denver, and more—top seeds like Duke and Florida take on No. 16 underdogs, while volatile 8-9 and 7-10 matchups promise drama. Fresh off Tuesday's First Four upset, where Alabama State stunned Saint Francis (PA) with an 85-foot pass and a game-winning layup, the day carries upset potential—watch for a 12-seed like McNeese State to challenge a 5-seed like Clemson. Games tip off around noon EDT and run late, broadcast across CBS, TBS, TNT, and truTV, with fans glued to screens for buzzer-beaters and bracket chaos.

In today's episode of Locked On UConn, we break down the Huskies' Big East opener against Xavier at the XL Center. With Samson Johnson sidelined in concussion protocol and Xavier missing their star, Zach Freemantle, this game will test the depth and adaptability of both teams. We'll dive into the matchups, spotlight key players like Liam McNeeley, Tarris Reed Jr., and the returning Ahmad Nowell, and discuss the evolving roles of Jaylin Stewart and Jayden Ross. Plus, we'll analyze the impact of an energetic XL Center crowd and predict how UConn can start Big East play with a statement win. Show Notes UConn's Big East opener against Xavier is shaping up to be a clash of depth and adjustments. The Huskies are looking to overcome the loss of Samson Johnson, whom Dan Hurley called the “heart and soul” of the team, while Xavier is without their leading scorer and rebounder, Zach Freemantle. Tonight's key storylines include the continued rise of Liam McNeeley, fresh off his career-high 26-point game against Gonzaga, and the potential impact of Ahmad Nowell, who is returning to action after a shoulder injury. Jaylin Stewart has stepped up as a dependable shooter and passer, while Jayden Ross has emerged as a defensive spark plug, using his length to disrupt opponents like he did against Ryan Nembhard at Madison Square Garden. This game will also test UConn's ability to handle Xavier's likely smaller lineup, with players like Tarris Reed Jr. and Youssouf Singare stepping into critical roles. A strong showing from the XL Center crowd could be the difference-maker in what Dan Hurley has called a “fortress” atmosphere. Ads FanDuel AdGet ready to tackle the NFL action with FanDuel, America's Number One Sportsbook! On today's mini-pod, we discuss the emergence of Liam McNeeley as the leader of this UConn team, following his 26-point, 8-rebound performance in a crucial win. We break down why McNeeley has taken the reins, how his all-around play is elevating the team, and why the criticism he's faced is unwarranted. We also dive into Aidan Mahaney's role and how Dan Hurley can unlock his potential by creating opportunities for him to play off the ball. Finally, with Samson Johnson out and Xavier missing Zach Freemantle, we explore the opportunities ahead for Tarris Reed to dominate in UConn's frontcourt. Segment 1: Liam McNeeley's Team Liam McNeeley proved once and for all that this is his team after a standout performance in UConn's latest win. While Alex Karaban, Hasson Diarra, and Solo Ball all contribute to winning, it's McNeeley who has emerged as the go-to player when the Huskies need a shot creator. His 26 points and 8 rebounds showed his ability to dominate in a variety of ways—inside, outside, and even as a distributor. Dan Hurley himself compared McNeeley to Cam Spencer, calling him a player “born” to fill that role. We also address the unfounded criticism McNeeley has received, pushing back against those doubting his impact. Segment 2: Unlocking Aidan Mahaney Aidan Mahaney hasn't yet reached his full potential with UConn, and this segment focuses on what needs to change. At St. Mary's, Mahaney excelled as a creator, playing off the ball and working off screens set by savvy point guards like Augustus Marciulionis Jr. For UConn, the key is finding ways to replicate that setup, possibly using Liam McNeeley as a point forward. Allowing Aidan to run off curls and attack without relying on heavy dribbling could unlock his scoring ability. With Ahmad Nowell returning from injury soon to take over more point guard minutes, now is the time to carve out a defined role for Aidan in the rotation. Segment 3: Tarris Reed's Big Opportunity With Samson Johnson sidelined and Xavier's Zach Freemantle out, Tarris Reed has a major chance to shine. Reed has already shown flashes of dominance with his physicality, rim protection, and ability to finish in the paint. This game presents an ideal matchup for Reed to take control and potentially solidify his role as a starter. Additionally, Youssef Singare will likely see minutes, and UConn may experiment with small-ball lineups featuring Alex Karaban at the 5. This is a crucial moment for UConn's frontcourt to assert itself as Big East play ramps up.From Liam McNeeley's emergence to Aidan Mahaney's potential and Tarris Reed's big opportunity, there's a lot to watch for as UConn navigates this crucial stretch. With Big East play ramping up, every player's role becomes even more important. Thanks for tuning in, and we'll be back soon to break down what comes next for the Huskies!Ad Reads Ad 1: FanDuel“This episode is brought to you by FanDuel, America's number-one sportsbook. Show Summary:UConn men's basketball has wrapped up a rollercoaster non-conference slate, turning things around after early struggles in Maui with statement wins over Baylor, Texas, and Gonzaga. Now, the Huskies head into Big East play with renewed momentum, but history hasn't been on their side when it comes to conference openers. UConn faces Xavier on Wednesday night at the XL Center in a game that sets the tone for the season. We'll break down UConn's turnaround, the keys to the Xavier matchup, and where the Big East as a whole stands after an underwhelming non-conference performance. Show Notes Segment 1: UConn's Non-Conference Redemption• UConn's early struggles in Maui saw them drop three straight games to unranked teams, raising concerns about depth, identity, and their ability to handle adversity.• Since then, UConn has responded like champions, winning three major games:• Baylor: A tough, gritty win against an elite team.• Texas (on the road): A statement of resilience.• Gonzaga (at MSG): A dominant performance highlighted by Liam McNeeley's breakout 26-point, 8-rebound game.• Dan Hurley credited the team's “champion's will” for their ability to recover from the early losses and head into conference play back where they want to be.• Key Players Emerging:• Liam McNeeley is living up to the hype and looks like the clear frontrunner for Big East Freshman of the Year.• Solo Ball continues to make plays, showing he can provide energy and scoring when needed.• UConn is entering the Big East slate with momentum, but the question remains—can they sustain it as the competition intensifies? Segment 2: UConn vs. Xavier Preview – Breaking the Conference Opener Curse• UConn's struggles in conference openers are well-documented:• 19-26 all-time in conference openers since 1979.• 1-5 under Dan Hurley, including losses to Seton Hall, Creighton, and Providence in recent years.• The game vs. Xavier:• Xavier will be without leading scorer and rebounder Zach Freemantle due to injury. That's a massive loss for Sean Miller's squad.• Key players for Xavier:• Ryan Conwell: A lethal shooter who can stretch the defense.• Dayvion McKnight: Xavier's dynamic guard who makes plays on both ends.• UConn's Potential Absence:• Samson Johnson (starting center) is in concussion protocol after exiting the Gonzaga game early. If Johnson can't go, look for extended minutes from Yousef Singare and Terrace Reed to help anchor the frontcourt.• The Keys for UConn:1. Defensive Discipline: Can they contain Xavier's shooters without fouling?2. Frontcourt Depth: Without Johnson, UConn's ability to dominate inside may rely on Singare, Reed, and even smaller lineups.3. Fast Start: Historically, UConn has struggled in these opening games. They need to set the tone early to break the conference opener curse. Segment 3: State of the Big East – Where Does the League Stand?• The Big East has underwhelmed in non-conference play:• Record against Power 4: 5-9 vs. Big 12, 4-6 vs. Big Ten, 3-5 vs. SEC.• Record vs. Top 25 teams: 7-8, with UConn and Marquette carrying the load.• Current Landscape:• UConn and Marquette are the only ranked teams, with both expected to contend for the conference title.• St. John's looks dangerous under Rick Pitino, narrowly missing an unbeaten start.• Creighton and Villanova have been inconsistent and need to stabilize heading into Big East play.• UConn's Role:• Dan Hurley has made it clear—he doesn't want UConn to “carry the league” again this season. While they're favorites to win the regular-season title, they'll face tougher nights this time around, particularly on the road.• Standouts So Far:• Kam Jones (Marquette): The Player of the Year frontrunner, leading the league with 20.1 PPG.• Liam McNeeley (UConn): The top freshman in the conference, already putting up elite performances.• Ryan Kalkbrenner (Creighton): A dominant defensive force, leading the league in blocks per game. The Big East has work to do to send more than three teams to the NCAA Tournament, and UConn will once again be at the center of the league's success. Final Thoughts:UConn saved its non-conference season with grit, resilience, and statement wins. Now the real journey begins in the Big East. Can the Huskies finally overcome their struggles in conference openers, or will Xavier present another early hurdle? The matchup at the XL Center will set the tone for UConn's Big East season—and with Samson Johnson's status up in the air, the Huskies' depth will be put to the test. Don't forget: I'll be LIVE after the game to break down everything—what worked, what didn't, and what this means for UConn's Big East run. GO HUSKIES!

Xavier and head coach Sean Miller are coming off a close win in the opening round over Kennesaw State and a runaway victory over Pittsburgh, and are hoping to improve on the last year of Miller's last stint in Cincinnati with a trip to the Elite Eight. B-Frank & Sam return to preview the Big East Basketball tournament, which tips off Wednesday. They discuss numerous storylines ahead of what's sure to be an incredible four days of competition at Madison Square Garden. After knocking off UConn on the road earlier in the year and a furious comeback fell short against Marquette, how dangerous can St. John's be? Can Villanova put together a storybook run to reach the NCAA Tournament after an abysmal start to the season? Can Xavier keep winning now that we know Zach Freemantle will miss the remainder of the season? Can UConn maintain the level of play that has national talking heads predicting a deep run? Can Creighton get over the hump and raise a trophy after losing the league championship game in their previous 4 trips? Will Providence's abhorrent defense put them back on the bubble? There's no way Marquette can manage to get through a regular season and conference tournament losing just three games to a league this deep, is there?! The guys also take the temperatures on their alma maters. Kadary Richmond's health remains a question mark for Seton Hall, who demolished Providence at the AMP the last day of the regular season. Creighton enters the tourney as one of two teams who are riding multiple game winning streaks in which they've won by double digits. UConn is the other and a popular pick to cut down the nets Saturday night, but what happens when Dan Hurley is faced with tough coaching decisions down the stretch in tight games? Six teams have a legitimate shot to take home the crown, and predicting the outcomes is darn near impossible, but B-Frank and Sam share their picks for every game as well as who the tournament's Most Outstanding Player might be depending on who wins. We're in for a wild ride, and this episode is the perfect primer!

B-Frank & Sam return for a quick show ahead of the penultimate weekend of Big East hoops to review a decisive previous week. On one side of the standings, Georgetown picked up an elusive road win. On the other, Marquette's win in Omaha has them primed to hang a regular season banner. They'll remind anyone who is willing to listen that they were picked NINTH in the preseason coaches poll. Each co-host's alma mater left some meat on the bone this past week as Seton Hall let another winnable game slip away and Creighton dropped their first home game of the conference slate, and only the league's second home loss among the top 4. UConn is hitting their stride at the right time as Jordan Hawkins' draft stock continues to rise. Xavier (twice) and Providence (once) fell to dash their hopes of winning the league's regular season, but this just creates more must-watch seeding storylines ahead of the conference tournament at MSG. Elsewhere, Villanova has won 4 of 5 ahead of the Creighton game Sam will attend Saturday in Philly, Butler is still undefeated in games decided by five points or fewer, DePaul still hasn't won since knocking off Xavier at home, and St. John's remains...interesting as contributors either returned from suspension or are mysteriously missing. It's little surprise that Marquette laid claim to the best stretch as they won the de-facto regular season title beating Creighton in a nail-biter. Xavier dropped two in the past week as their struggles without Zach Freemantle continue, thus they received the dishonor of worst stretch. This week's top performers are all on teams that are rolling at the right time as a new name has justifiably entered into the Big East POY discussion. This week's big question revolves around who we'd least like to run into at the Big East Tournament. Though some probable matchups scare Brian and Sam, neither wants anything to do with Marquette for a few reasons. They wrap up by mentioning the league's must-see games ahead of next Saturday's all-day regular season finale.

B-Frank and Sam return in chipper moods as Seton Hall has won 8 of 10 and Creighton controls their own destiny in the race for the regular season crown heats up. B-Frank runs through the standings and the boys begin power rankings bottom up. Georgetown collected their first conference win in 30 tries right after we finished recording the previous episode. DePaul and Butler are back in the basement after looking promising earlier in the year. The Johnnies' only win since last show was a 2-point thriller over Georgetown in which Rockford native A.J. Storr played well and hit a ballsy shot late. Justin Moore has returned for Villanova, but they're still winless with him in the lineup after having faced the conference's top teams. UConn is treading water, but couldn't pick up a quality win against Xavier and played Georgetown tighter than expected. Seton Hall is sitting firmly on the bubble after reeling off three straight wins, the most recent of which got off to a glacial pace scoring against DePaul Sunday. Providence shouldn't be looked past as they also control their own destiny in the conference title race. Bryce Hopkins has come back to earth, but Jared Bynum has elevated his play during a 2-1 stretch since last recording. Xavier survived a tough road test at UConn, but fell to Creighton and is now without Zach Freemantle for what appears to be the remainder of the regular season. Jack Nunge has stepped up in a major way in Freemantle's absence as X should roll over Butler in their only game of the week. The Jays are flying high after winning 6 straight - tied for their longest conference winning streak since joining the league. Can they keep it rolling in Newark against the Pirates and survive 5 of 8 on the road to end the regular season? Finally, Marquette is still in the driver's seat after 5 consecutive wins, a far cry from the 9th place spot they were selected in the preseason. Tyler Kolek has turned himself into one of the nation's premier lead guards and the Golden Eagles can be solid on defense when the situation calls for it. Creighton and Villanova are unanimous best and worst stretch winners, as the recipe behind the Jays' extended win streak has been their defense thanks to Ryan Kalkbrenner rounding into form. He looks every bit the conference's defending DPOY. Villanova is 4-11 in games decided by single digits, and they'll have to begin winning some games to avoid going .500 or worse for just the second time in the past 20 seasons. Tyler Kolek gets top performer nods from both B-Frank and Sam, while Jack Nunge gets a nod from Sam. Homer picks round out the segment as Kadary Richmond and the entire Jays' defensive unit are highlighted. The Creighton-Seton Hall game highlights this week's games to watch, while UConn has a prove-it week as they host Marquette before traveling to Creighton. This weekend's St. John's Providence matchup will also be a sneaky entertaining matchup. The lads finish up by reminiscing about the most court storm worthy moments from their favorite teams.

This Week In The BIG EAST Radio Show, distributed by Westwood One, continues its ninth season with guests Connecticut sophomore guard Jordan Hawkins, Butler head coach Thad Matta and CBS Sports Network analyst Jon Rothstein. The fifth episode of TWITBE reviews the past week of BIG EAST basketball, taking a deep dive into the league past the halfway point. As the home teams continue to dominate, the top four teams in the standings–Marquette, Xavier, Providence and Creighton–are currently 8-0 against each other on their home floors. On Wednesday, the 16th-ranked Musketeers protected their home court in overtime against No. 17 Providence, despite losing Zach Freemantle to an injury. On the same night, No. 14 Marquette came back to secure a home win over Villanova. The BIG EAST Spotlight is on UConn guard Jordan Hawkins, who discusses the growth in his game in his sophomore season with the Huskies. Ranking second on the squad with 16.6 points per game, in addition to knocking down a team high 61 shots from deep on a .399 clip, Hawkins explains how his confidence is through the roof compared to his freshman year. He also mentions how the game has slowed down for him and how he is making better decisions on both ends of the court. The BIG EAST Focus shines on Butler head coach Thad Matta, ahead of the Bulldogs' showdown with Marquette Saturday at 2 p.m. ET on FS1. Returning to the Butler sidelines after taking some time away from coaching, it has been a rollercoaster first season for Matta and the Bulldogs, but one they look to build upon as the program looks to regain national prominence.CBS Sports Network analyst Jon Rothstein gives a view on the national perspective. Rothstein points out the outstanding seasons both Providence and Marquette are putting together, despite low expectations by outsiders prior to the season. With Providence, Rothstein discusses how the Friars lost all five starters a season ago, but have replenished the lineup and now are in position to get back to the NCAA Tournament with a quality seed. As for Marquette, he explains how this is the best offensive team Shaka Smart has coached, comparing to his 2012 VCU team, as well as how Marquette looks the part of a team that can win multiple games in the tournament. The episode's “Who's Hot” segment features the return of “Blast from the Past”, rewinding the tape to just a season ago, February 2nd, 2022. Marquette beat Villanova 83-73 at Fiserv Forum. Coupled with their win over the Wildcats in December, the Golden Eagles became the first BIG EAST team to take down Villanova four straight times since the league's reconfiguration 10 years ago.The returning hosts for This Week In The BIG EAST (#TWITBE) are John Rooke, a longtime BIG EAST play-by-play voice, and Kevin McNamara, BIG EAST radio host, columnist and author. Rooke and McNamara give a comprehensive look at the teams, coaches, players and storied tradition of the top basketball conference in America in each episode. To join the conversation and send questions to Rooke (@JRbroadcaster) and McNamara (@KevinMcNamara33), use #TWITBE on Twitter. B-Frank and Sam return after a week-and-a-half holiday hiatus to discuss the new balance of power in their favorite basketball conference. Georgetown has lost 25 straight conference games in an impressively bad skid after getting hot to win the Big East Tournament two seasons ago. They run through the standings, which experienced quite the shakeup as previously unbeaten UCONN dropped consecutive road contests against Xavier, then Providence. The Friars are 5-0 in conference play for the first time in their history much thanks to efforts from Fenwick alum Bryce Hopkins. Xavier, like Providence, has also won 8 straight behind an ultra-efficient frontcourt of Jack Nunge & Zach Freemantle. Marquette continues to stay ahead of schedule and rack up conference wins, and Creighton has won three straight home games ahead of a week in which they travel to UCONN & Xavier. We'd be shocked if the conference regular season champ comes from outside of those five teams, but Justin Moore is now practicing with Villanova, so don't count the Wildcats out quite yet. B-Frank continues to be frustrated by Seton Hall's effort, though the Pirates have been shooting better from the charity stripe the past couple games. The fellas discuss the best (Providence) and worst (UCONN & St. John's) stretches since last recording. Providence's impressively re-tooled roster has proven they can win games scoring in the 70's and play tough defense, no surprise given Ed Cooley patrols the sidelines. If UCONN fancies themselves a title contender they'll have to not be so reliant on threes, quit sending opposing teams to the foul line, and keep their composure on the sidelines - looking at you, Dan Hurley. St. John's has all but proven themselves fraudulent after stacking up wins in a noncompetitive non-con slate. The Johnnies' mess unfortunately overshadows an incredible season by Joel Soriano thus far. The aforementioned Zach Freemantle (for the second straight week) and Jack Nunge are two of this recent stretch's top performers. Trey Alexander also gets the nod from Sam after pouring in 32 points on Christmas day and leading the Jays in assists - shooting well and adding 15 points - in a blowout win over B-Frank's Pirates in Omaha. B-Frank then introduces a new segment in which he and Sam discuss a thought-provoking question, kicking off this week by running through our top three favorite teams to beat/most frustrating teams to lose to. Interestingly enough, Marquette appears on both lists. They conclude by mentioning this next stretch's games to watch, as the conference's top tier has plenty of opportunities to prove its mettle against each other.

Conference play has tipped off in the two weeks since B-Frank and Sam last recorded, and UCONN is still undefeated atop the standings. Providence and Xavier are also 2-0 in league play. After running through the rest of the standings (0:20-1:06), Sam shares his holiday spirit after the Jays pulled off a get-right win over Butler in Omaha - just their second home game in 31 days. The guys talk about how important Ryan Kalkbrenner is to Creighton's defensive identity and how a sleeveless Baylor Scheierman needs to play to achieve the team's lofty preseason expectations. A less rosy B-Frank lays out the issues with Seton Hall's start to conference play, highlighted by poor jump-shooting and the incredible free-throw defense SHU opponents have managed to play (1:10-24:30). Power rankings (24:35-55:56) follow as UCONN, Providence, Xavier, and Villanova each have notable winning streaks heading into important matchups in the week after Christmas. Marquette fought valiantly in a tough Providence road environment paced by a career night from Charlie Kolek a quick drive from where he grew up, but ultimately fell in a double-OT thriller. The Golden Eagles are ahead of schedule and can score with anyone. St. John's doesn't have any resume-boosting wins to speak of and don't appear poised to pick up many throughout conference play. Creighton finally got off the schneid but has plenty of work to do before they're worthy of the praise heaped on them when they were undefeated and ranked in the top 10 in November. Butler fell fast after not showing much fight in the second half against UCONN and Creighton, but could trip up Providence at Hinkle next week. Shaheen Holloway still hasn't gotten buy-in from all his players in South Orange. Georgetown showed fight against Xavier and UCONN, but have no depth and can't get stops when they need to. DePaul is in the basement yet again. B-Frank & Sam briefly touch on the teams who have had the best and worst stretches since our last recording (56:00-58:35) before focusing on the top performers during that same time period (58:36-1:01:41). Bryce Hopkins is playing like a man possessed and deserves to be put on every national watchlist he's eligible for. Kadary Richmond is Seton Hall's most reliable offensive weapon by a long shot. Zach Freemantle, much to Sam's chagrin, has appeared to put whatever issues plagued him last year en route to a hyper-efficient stretch of games. Frederick King gets an honorable mention for doing his best Ryan Kalkbrenner impression in the last few games while Creighton's center dealt with and returned from an illness. They finish up by touching on the Big East's games to watch before the new year (1:01:52-1:03:51) as marquee matchups abound for Villanova, Xavier, UCONN, and Marquette. We also get a Christmas day matchup in Omaha as the Jays host DePaul.
