Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast

The ADHD Tax is real—and it's costly. A recent poll found over half of people with ADHD lose over $1000 a year to fees, fines, and forgetfulness. We call them ADHD Taxes: late bill payments, expired food, unpaid subscriptions. Benjamin Franklin said nothing is certain except death and taxes, but ADHD Taxes are optional. With planning and habits, we can eliminate these penalties that drain our time, money, and self-esteem. ADHD may be lifelong, but the taxes don't have to be. Learn to stop the cycle and keep that currency—money and time—in your pocket. The cost of a ADHD Tax? Your peace of mind. The gain from ending it? Tony Tran decided to get evaluated for ADHD during his last year of college, after starting a part-time IT job. His grades began to slip, and his brain would scream at him: “Don't be lazy!” Then he realized that the fake scenarios he had to solve alone in class were boring compared to the real-life problems he collaborated on with his co-workers.  When Tony was a child, his family immigrated to Australia from Vietnam. Growing up, Tony's ADHD symptoms were missed. But now his mom even sees ADHD in herself. After being diagnosed, Tony felt grief for lost time — time when he could have known why he felt like the “annoying weird kid.” Time when he could have held on to relationships that ended because of his trouble managing emotions. But that lost time led him to who he is today: A person with deeper understanding of ADHD and the strengths that can come with it. Also in this episode: The “ADHD tax.” Listen in to see if you've paid a literal price as a result of ADHD behaviors.  To find a transcript for this episode and more resources, visit the episode page at Understood.  We love hearing from our listeners. Rick has expertise in real-estate, entrepreneurship, and ADHD!  He has managed many domains in the financial and real-estate world, and in the last couple of years, he's put his focus in helping people with ADHD make better peace and better “cents” of their finances.  As CEO of Rena-Fi, Rick brings perspective, vision, and passion to an area of life he considers foundational: Personal Money Management.  His motto has always been, “It's not just business; it's personal.” Eric and Rick share stories about paying the ADHD tax and its larger umbrella, the effects of chronic long-term stress, ways to change self-talk and self-identity to get things done, challenges we may encounter when developing financial habits, the shame we can feel when working on our finances, and forgiving ourselves.  Then, Eric and Rick talk about behavioral finance, why money management isn't just about willpower, the impact of looking upstream, creating reminders and cues, and saying “no” to improve performance.  Finally, you'll hear Eric and Rick talk about maintenance costs, other costs of homeownership, planning for upcoming maintenance, and the three primary reasons why the ADHD tax continues to happen. Learn More about Rick Webster at   Other ADHD-tax stories shared on this episode: “I have paid the ADHD tax so many times. I'd love some recommendations on extremely simple/easy budgeting tools.  A lot of budgeting books have too many steps.”  “I always do my taxes at the last possible minute and don't know if I do them right, and I always owe a lot.”  “Didn't pay a speeding ticket, license was suspended.  Pulled over again - arrested driving with a suspended license.  Then, I paid much more than the original speeding ticket for a lawyer, speeding tickets, and additional charges for reinstating my license.  “I pay the ADHD tax every day.  Paying late-fees, re-buying things I can't find, spending impulsively, paying for things I'm not using because I didn't cancel them or forgot to return them in time, expedited shipping because I didn't order something on-time, ordering take-out because I wasn't organized enough to have dinner ready, etc.  How can I be triggered to think things through at an early enough time that I can follow through in a way that lets me avoid the ADHD tax?”  “I've paid the ADHD tax on rush-orders. I've paid more on expensive repairs to my vehicles/yard equipment/house appliances, instead of the regular preventative maintenance that would've prevented the damage in the first place.  I have paid out-of-pocket costs for my meds because my insurance lapsed or I never sent in the reimbursement forms for what would be covered if I do the extra steps.  How do I know what the preventative maintenance tasks are on my big or expensive things (often appliances)? I feel like I “should” do many of them myself.  Would I be paying an ADHD tax by paying people to come do some of these easier tasks for my appliances because they at least know and will at least call me when they are due?” Hear Rick Webster on !  Check out the Other Podcasts on the ADHD reWired Podcast Network: with Brendan Mahan with Will Curb with MJ Siemens

Have you heard about the "ADHD tax?" It's not an official tax, but it's sure getting a lot of time on social media lately! The "ADHD tax" refers to the accumulation of unwanted, additional expenses that are incurred because a person has ADHD.  Like, all the expenses we rack up because we've forgotten to pay the bills or we got distracted and lost track of our overdraft fees or that oil change the car needed but we postponed, and it caused the car to break down... all of these cost us money, time and patience! In today's episode, Lacy Estelle discusses how we as ADHD'ers have a huge blind spot, almost an "out of sight, out of mind" mentality, and it causes us a lot of grief in our lives especially in matters that impact our money.  Lacy explains how: We don't have much of a concept of how our habits compound because we don't see it in real-time. We don't know exactly how to map the steps out to get to the future we want, and that keeps us stuck. We struggle pushing good habits into our long term memory. Lacy also shares some practical insight from her experience on how to form new necessary habits as a person with ADHD, and how to work on lessening the "ADHD tax" that's stealing from your future! This Episode comes with multiple trigger warnings, and it was incredibly triggering for us to record. We explore the many ways in which undiagnosed ADHD has cost us in ‘romantic' relationships throughout our lives. We distinguish this type of relationship, as we will cover other types of personal relationships  ADHD Tax has cost us in a future episode. The quotation marks are also there for irony! LOLS! We deep dive into how undiagnosed ADHD can destroy romantic relationships, backed up with some heavy stats. We reflect upon how unknowingly our ADHD has caused others distress, rather than victimising ourselves as we would've done prior to the awareness our ‘diagnosis' brought. We acknowledge how vulnerable a place we were in unknowingly due to our symptoms. HOWEVER, that does NOT excuse the bad behaviour of other parties. Finally we credit Florence Given for her words of wisdom! If somebody treats you badly, DUMP HIM! Much like Florence's book, ‘Women Don't Owe You Pretty', this is the podcast episode we wish we'd heard a couple of decades ago. We hope you ‘enjoy' or at least take something away from this excruciating episode, and that we don't sound too preachy! We are by no means experts(!!!) and on reflection, we are basically telling our younger selves a thing or two! *TRIGGER WARNING* We discuss some VERY distressing topics, including divorce, domestic abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, gaslighting, breakups, severe mental health distress Support the show

She explains why ADHD makes money hard for all of us and how to avoid the ADHD tax.Impulse Spending and the ADHD TaxBy nature, people with ADHD are impulsive. When we have those impulsive moments, we can easily overspend because we're not paying attention to what we're buying. We end up paying extra purely because of how our brain is designed.Common Culprits Resulting in the ADHD Tax:Trial subscriptions you forgot to cancelOverpaying and not confident asking for refundsDuplicate purchases you forgot you already haveUnpaid Traffic TicketsHigh-interest rates due to your credit scoreThe Shiny Object Syndrome Slows Down Our BrainWe would be working against our natural brain to say we're going to eliminate impulse spending, so we need to learn how to decrease those impulses instead. For example, have you ever had one of those "Ooh, shiny!" moments when you saw something you just had to have? Did you buy it right then and there, or did you hold off and think about it? Putting a time limit on something you want to buy can help limit the spending impulse. Tell yourself to wait five days to purchase the enticing item; at the five-day mark, if you still want it and can afford it, buy it. Slowing your brain down to think about that purchase may not make it look as shiny and amazing on day five as it did on day one, and you may realize you no longer want or need it.Get ADHD Cashed UpA process to work through the guilt around spending money is something Tina calls “ADHD Cashed Up”.
