Come on into this episode where we're talking all about coming out as a teenager. In the studio with Anna, we have the inspiring LGBTQ+ advocate, author, TV presenter and celebrity-masterchef, Riyadh Khalaf. Riyadh's challenging, but incredibly powerful, story of coming out as a teenager to his then Irish Catholic mother and Iraqi Muslim father, means he has much wisdom to pass on to our listener today. Our dilemma is from a listener struggling to come out to her parents, whilst also dealing with grief over losing the only family member who knew she was gay and who was a great support to her. Alongside Riyadh, we have best-selling author and much-loved psychotherapist, Owen O'Kane. Owen not only generously shares his expertise but also has his own coming out story to share, having come to terms with his sexuality while training to be a priest. Anna, Riyadh and Owen have a conversation filled with warmth, laughter, pain and joy where they offer concrete advice to our listener on finding connection and acceptance, chosen families, bringing shame out into the light and, throughout it all, finding your courage. While this episode is an inspiring listen, it does mention self-harm, suicide and a non-consensual sexual encounter. So please approach the episode with care. If you or someone you love has been affected by any of the topics covered in this episode, help is available. Today's episode features someone I am proud to call my friend – Riyadh Khalaf. We met a few years back when we worked at the same radio station in Dublin, I had been there for a few years at that stage, had a baby or two at that stage and he was the next generation on the way in, embracing the new online age, going most places with a video camera in tow, his own You Tube Channel and buckets of enthusiasm. I told him then that he had something special so watching his star ascend has come as no surprise to me, his You Tube Channel followers hit 378 thousand subscribers where he shares honest accounts of life, love, coming out and reading mean tweets. His video where his mum reads out his grindr messages has had over 5 millons views. Riyadh has a gift of interweaving important topics with laugh out loud humour. He now lives in London where he has worked at BBC Radio, he's a reporter for The One Show, he won Celebrity Masterchef and remains a huge social media star. He still has so many plans for documentary making and he's living his best life, travelling, on dancefloors and he shares a cat called Claire with his partner Josh – I never did ask about that bit in the interview – but I'm not offended, I'm a cat person and boy is she a beauty.Riyadh is a Changemaker because he has taken what shouldn't have been taboo and hauled it into the mainstream, he has taken abuse for it but used that to power him on. The message of thanks he receives far outweigh any trolling and his book Yay You're Gay Now What has sold around the world.Empathy is said to be one of the key components of a changemaker and what Riyadh has to say about empathy in this conversation gave me goosebumps – Riyadh makes the world a better place – hope you enjoy x Hosted on Acast. In the very first episode of Building Queertopia, Shane and Chelcee welcome broadcaster and author Riyadh Khalaf to their new queer utopia. The Dublin-born Youtuber is known for shedding light on LGBTQIA+ issues and he uses his own coming out story to help other queer people and their families. He wants to make sure all LGBTQIA+ people feel free to live authentically from a young age. Shane and Chelcee want to know what piece of art Riyadh would bring, who he would to pay tribute to in statue and what building he would want for Queertopians to visit. And is there anything we could be doing right now to make real life better for the queer community? Their hope is that in the process of building this fictional paradise, they might just hit on ways to make reality that little bit better for…everyone. Want to have a say? At this point in the season, I want to explore anxiety in the gay community: particularly the anxiety surrounding coming out to family and friends, feeling 'othered' at school growing up gay. For this episode I am joined by Celebrity Masterchef winner 2020, LGBTQ+ activist, bestselling author and broadcaster Riyadh Khalaf who shares his experience with me from childhood right through to present times. We talk about the anxiety of feeling at odds with how you think you 'should' be. The fear of rejection. How he navigated telling his parents that he was gay - which was not the story of instant acceptance you'd hope for - and where he's at now with self-love and acceptance. He offers great insights and advice for anyone facing their own experience of coming out. I really loved having this chat with Riyadh and whether or not you as the listener are gay doesn't really matter, if you've ever felt a disconnect between how you feel inside and the person you put out to the world, this conversation will resonate with you. Thanks as always for supporting Owning It on Patreon or via the new Acast support feature.Buy Riyadh's book here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yay-Youre-Gay-Now-What/dp/1786031914 Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast.
