After two years of supporting each other’s music projects to tour across Europe and the UK, Brea Robertson and Poppy Rose decided to work on a project they could do closer to home. Art-Work the podcast was born! Why Art-Work? We want to provide a platform for multi-disciplinary artists to share their work, their passion and their journey with a broader audience. We hope that people from all backgrounds will hear these stories and gain a deeper understanding into the minds, the life and the process of creative people from all over the world. We also want to shine a spotlight on independent artists who are not well known, to celebrate their stories and challenge the idea that to be successful in the arts, you need notoriety. So far, we have been amazed at the conversations we’ve had with artists from Canada, England, Germany, Australia, the USA, Norway and India. Stories of challenging social systems in India to pursue a passion, using the arts to fight political battles in Norway, discussing the art of balancing multiple projects as an artist, using music as a therapy in refugee camps across Europe and more. Every human has an incredible story, and we can’t wait to share some with you! Find us on Spotify, Google, Apple podcasts and Soundcloud.

Ever heard of post-porn clowning? Soon it will become a household term when ABA NAIA take over the world with their incredible Berlin-based Latin-American-European performance collective! Today we had the honour of speaking with Teija and Jaika, two members of ABA NAIA. Since 2017, the collective have been exploring topics of sexuality with a comedic approach. With tools of post-porn clowning they question gender norms and its expectations, as well as the myths and stereotypes of femininity and desire. They say, “Our bodies, our sexuality and our vulnerability are our political weapons on stage. We battle the boundaries between cheerfulness and discomfort. We want to inspire and encourage our audience, to question their perceptions on freedom of self expression, sexuality, equality and pleasure.” All of this comes together in their post-porn clowning lecture performance, We Can Do It Moaning. In this episode, Teija and Jaika tell us about how practising things that make us feel awkward help to normalise it, how powerful comedy is when venturing into awkward or difficult topics of conversation, and how important vulnerability is when wanting to be funny...the clown helps us see a reflection of ourselves in our most vulnerable place. Ever wondered what it's like to be part of a huge Netflix show production? Our artist today is actor and singer Sam Otto, who plays John Osweiller in the hit Netflix dystopian drama, Snowpiercer. Sam studied at Drama School London, but left his course early to perform in Richard Wilson's ‘Fracked!' at Chichester Festival Theatre. He then secured the lead role in Peter Kosminsky's explosive drama, ‘The State', in which 4 young British citizens journey to Syria to join ISIS. The show went on to receive a BAFTA nomination in the miniseries category. In this episode we talk about finding your voice when working on a big studio tv production as a relative newcomer, maintaining a creative practice outside the ‘job', how Sam is navigating how to make the most of his colour and race when auditioning for roles, without being defined by it... and so much more. Creating is not a perfect, linear journey; and today we talk all about embracing the mess in our process with Danish-born, Berlin-based movement artist, singer and musician, Kat Polar. As an artist and creator Kat's passion is to be what she creates, to observe and live inside of it. She also explores the discipline of resisting the "fast-pace" production that is all consuming in our capitalist world, especially when it comes to promoting and sharing your art as a polished and perfect product on social media. In this episode we talk about entering the flow state while creating, the balance between being an artist and having to exist in a capitalist world, how to be authentic on social media, and how as artists we have the power to create our own realities... including our definition of success. How can 450 year-old plays still have meaning in the theatre today? Charlie Dupré tells us how Shakespeare has hugely influenced his practice as a playwright, actor and spoken word artist. Charlie is from London, currently based in Berlin, and has taken multiple shows to Edinburgh Fringe Festival including 'The Stories of Shakey P' which re-imagined Shakespeare as a playground battle rapper, and 'Macblair' which told the story of Tony Blair as a Macbeth-style tragicomedy. It played the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringes to critical success, and Charlie tells us all about his experience taking his independent shows to these festivals and shares some amazing practical tips of things he's learnt along the way. In the last couple of years Charlie has moved away from pursuing an acting career to discovering a love of playwriting. In this episode we talk about the importance of staying open to trying new things and how your path will reveal itself. We also talk about Charlie's love of Shakespeare and reinventing his stories and plays with a current and topical twist, how theatre can be an amazing space to open discussion about politics and other important issues (especially in today's polarised climate), and we also get a special performance of some excerpts from his plays and some wonderful spoken word! Let's talk about telling important stories. Theo Toksvig Stewart is a dyslexic writer and actor who trained at the Drama Centre London, and he wrote his first play Endless Second during a particularly dry audition spell. Endless Second deals with consent within a relationship and it received multiple five-star reviews as well as being shortlisted for two awards at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe. It was then commissioned as an audio adaptation which was transmitted on BBC Radio 4 in March 2021. Alongside developing television ideas, Theo has been commissioned for a number of theatre projects and was part of the BBC Writersroom Drama Room scheme and the Minack Playwrights Programme. We talked about so much in this episode: Theo reminds us that what we do does not inform our whole identity, how he’s managed to lay down boundaries between work and life, the importance of asking if you’re the right person to tell a story as a writer, and his experience of taking a show to Edinburgh Fringe. We’d never met Theo before, and by the end of the conversation we felt like we’d known him for years. He opened up about the challenges he’s experienced as an actor and writer and offered a lot of wisdom from the journey he’s taken. Before you listen to this episode, please be aware that we talk quite candidly about rape and consent because of Theo’s play, Endless Second. We just want to let you so that you can make the decision that protects you. Are you super clear on why you are creating your art? In this episode we talk with faith-based RnB singer-songwriter Asha Elia about defining your why, and holding onto those reasons when you feel disillusioned by the industry, the importance of surrounding yourself with a like-minded supportive community, Asha’s experience of being a part of two worlds... the music industry and the Christian community, and how the artist’s journey is always a step by step process. After finding a faith in Christianity while studying accounting, Asha Elia struggled to find the uplifting type of RnB music she wanted to listen to. So... she resolved to write it herself! With no musical background or prior intentions of becoming a musician, Asha’s desire to create empowering music has taken her on a journey she never expected. She now has over 40,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and her songs have been listened to well over 1,000,000 times. Let's talk about toxic masculinity in the music industry. This week we spoke to Oh Papa, a Sheffield-based 4 piece band, made up of Jack, Ric, Felix and Phil, who blend together facets of Americana, soft rock, subtle surf and indie in their music. Striving to change the perception of what it means to be an indie band from Yorkshire and dispel the toxic masculinity that has been prevalent in the indie rock scene, the members of Oh Papa actively take steps to challenge the culture they see around them. In this episode we talk with lead singer, Jack, and drummer, Felix, about finding a balanced dynamic within a group creative project, addressing inclusivity within the music industry, dismantling ideas of toxicity and competition, and the importance of looking after your mental health when we are so often told to work harder. The pair also give us a glimpse into the hilarious world of Oh Papa including their three WhatsApp groups for positive, negative and business talk. It’s a great conversation with lots of inspiring insights from two seasoned musicians. Follow Oh Papa & listen to their music... Our artist this week is Diana Galminzyanova, a film maker and video artist based in Moscow, Russia. Her award-winning short films have been accepted to more than 70 festivals in 20 countries, and her art pieces have been a part of group exhibitions all over the world. Her award-winning debut feature film, The Lightest Darkness, was the first ever female-directed Russian film noir. She is now working on her next project, a horror-comedy called Murder Girl, which she tells us all about in the episode. Diana blew us away with her perspective on how art can challenge the status quo, the importance of women supporting women, and how she uses her artistry to share the voices of those who don’t always have that power themselves. We found Diana and her art through Instagram and it was so incredible that although the three of us had never met and were all in and we’re all from different countries, we each felt such a strong connection throughout this conversation. It was amazing to hear from a fellow female creative that she is passionate about similar things as we are. We hope that this episode is a huge encouragement to you that there are people all over the world doing what they can to make a positive difference through art. In this episode we talk with Greek-Australian Actor & Creator, Bianca Zouppas, about redefining success, the importance of following your gut instinct, and letting go of expectation. Acting for stage and screen has been, and continues to be Bianca’s passion. She spent her time between Australia and the US, but since the interference of COVID and having her time during pilot season in LA cut short, Bianca decided to return to Brisbane to pursue her first love of theatre once again. As well as performing, Bianca’s passion for fostering supportive and sincere connections between people in the creative industry led her to create CALI - Creative Artistic Ladies Incorporated - which she has been running since 2018. CALI is a place for creatives to come together and flex their creative muscles in an array of hands-on workshops. Bianca also coaches young people, who inspire her and keep the passion for performing alive. Our artists today are Australian animators Mark Nicholson and Sebastian Peart, founders of Stepmates and creators of the Australian TV Show 'Regular Old Bogan'. At its core, Stepmates is the combined devotion of Mark and Seb to “Make Australia Funny Again” with animated satire that dances on the line of what constitutes taboo in the current political climate. They have rapidly captured the attention of audiences with their uniquely Australian sense of humour and the ability to condense an oftentimes critically overthought topic to a key statement. In 2019, the Seven Network, a national Australian TV network, commissioned Stepmates to produce the first series of Regular Old Bogan which hit Australian screens in August 2020... and most things are still held together with duct tape! How many times have you been told 'no'? How do you deal with rejection? How do you continue to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and carry on? This week's artist - British dancer, teacher and choreographer, Katie Kelly - tells us how she does it, and how perseverance paid off. Katie has spent years travelling around Europe auditioning for dance companies, believing that that was the most sure way to secure a sustainable career in dance. Oftentimes, she would return home feeling dejected. Yet her passion for dance remained unwavered. After stepping back from dance work to give herself some time to rest, travel and explore other options at the start of this year, dance came back to her in an amazing opportunity to teach and choreograph full time at a vocational school in Freiburg, South Germany. In this episode we talk about overcoming rejection, not giving up, and the power of letting go. How can we tackle issues such as colourism and intergenerational conflict within communities? With theatre of course! This week's guest is director, playwright and theatre maker, Grace Edward. Grace has an incredible story; born in South Sudan, Grace left their homeland at 3 years old on their mother’s back. Grace’s family moved from place to place for a few years, including a refugee camp in Kenya, until they moved to Australia when Grace was 8 years old. They studied Applied Theatre alongside our host, Brea, and strongly believe in the power of storytelling as a tool to understand one another better. Through their creative projects, Grace explores different aspects of what it means to be a third-culture child and a person of colour, living in Australia today. They have co-written, produced and directed two theatre productions in Brisbane ‘Linking generations: A forum theatre play’ and ‘Skin Deep’ which explored the ideology of colourism within People of Colour Communities. Grace has spoken around Australia on a range of issues including youth leadership, education, health, intergenerational conflict, systemic racism, and displacement. Grace now draws from their life experience to create theatre that tells the real stories of people in their community. Be sure to follow Grace... This week's episode is with Canadian visual artist and designer, Helena Napal. Helena is an emerging artist currently exploring painting and sculpture and design. She came to Berlin 4 years ago with the intention of studying International Relations, however she soon became immersed in the creativity of the city and found a sense of fulfilment in facilitating arts workshops with German students. Currently, Helena seeks to better understand sexuality and identity from the female/femme perspective through her visual art practice. Her experiences of sexual trauma and reproductive health issues fuel her passion to reclaim her power and autonomy by embracing adversity and creating in the face of it. She's an incredible ray of sunshine and we can't wait to share this episode with you! Today's episode is with Indian singer-songwriter, Jatin Khurana. In this conversation, we talk about Jatin's huge decision to walk away from studying engineering to pursue his dream of music - a very unusual path to take in India, where there is a lot of societal pressure to study engineering and sciences. We talk about how important Jatin’s community of fellow musicians in Mumbai have been to his success, and how he has fused his Indian roots and Hindi language with western styles of music to create something new and original within the Indian music scene. He's an incredible artist and we are so excited to share this conversation with you! Since we recorded this episode, Jatin's single 'Kaidee' has been featured in Rolling Stone India's Monthly Playlist - how cool is that!?
