National Animal Rights Day is a unique event coming up on June 2, 2024 and today we have the creator of this day of action, Aylam Orian. Aylam is a Hollywood actor, filmmaker and animal rights activist. With his non-profit "Our Planet. Theirs Too." he has established The National Animal Rights Day (N.A.R.D.) – a day of moving events dedicated to animals and their rights, which are held simultaneously in major cities every June. NARD events are now held in 50 countries around the world. He is also the creator of The Declaration of Animal Rights – a vegan, animal liberation document that details the rights all animals have as living beings on planet Earth – which has been translated to 23 languages. As an actor, he has appeared in numerous known films and TV shows (30 Rock, Code Black, NCIS: LA, The Informer, Strargate Origins), and he wll be seen next in the new TV show about The Holocaust, “We Were the Lucky Ones.” Aylam tells the story of how he started The National Animal Rights Day in 2011 and how the day of action has grown every year and spread across the globe. He also tells us about the inspiration behind the creation of The Declaration of Animal Rights, how it reflects the UN declaration of human rights, and how it's a roadmap for a future of compassionate human-animal relations. We talk with Dr. Orian Welling and Mr. Michael Parker from ERDC's Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory about how ERDC's cold weather mobility expertise will directly help the U.S. military better protect and defend the Arctic. As the Arctic grows in strategic importance to the United States, the region also presents unique challenges to military mobility. Heavy duty tires designed for rugged terrains don't handle as well on cold, slick surfaces. And ice and snow aren't the only challenges facing military vehicles in Arctic environments. In fact, mobility becomes even more difficult during the spring months when frozen ground begins to thaw, and the terrain is transformed into a muddy, swampy quagmire. ERDC's research is enabling better cold weather tires and leading to robust cross-country mobility models that can forecast ice thickness, snow depth and thaw, and predict which vehicles can perform where in Arctic conditions. ERDC is also providing knowledge and developing algorithms and systems that will allow autonomous manned and unmanned systems to navigate in cold regions. We talk with Orian and Mike about how their unique backgrounds contribute to this research (6:41, 30:16), why the Army needs to study Arctic mobility (4:13), the unique challenges of the spring thaw (34:47), and how the expertise of CRREL's mobility team (8:57) and the laboratory's world-class specialized facilities (11:27) enable this capability. 11 July 2022 - “We binned the data, which is one of my favorite things to do,” said cell biologist Orian Shirihai, describing how careful observation and analysis transformed an inquiry into the regulation of insulin secretion into a groundbreaking description of the mitochondrial life cycle. The resulting portrait of what Shirihai refers to as “the social life of mitochondria within the cell” was published in The EMBO Journal in 2008. The paper, “Fission and selective fusion govern mitochondrial segregation and elimination by autophagy”, has since received almost three thousand citations and is included in the journal's 40th anniversary collection. Konstanze Winklhofer discusses the paper's enduring impact and the role of mitochondrial quality control in her field of neurodegenerative diseases.

Originally from Wexford, Ireland and has been living in Berlin since 2016 Joey takes through his musical journey, from first picking up the guitar at age 7 (he's now 29), his wide array of musical influences, the early band days at high school, and the transition to solo performer/singer-songwriter. After releasing a couple of albums and the subsequent move to Germany, Joey felt like he'd lost something in the music he was making and wanted to branch out creatively. His new sound was based on the influences and the music that he was listening to at that time and ORIAN was born. We get into the recording process for the EP (Before it Weighs Us Down), collaborations, the crisp and cinematic sound that Joey was looking for (I think he found it), live drums versus programmed drums, and why Joey's happier to explore the more softer, indie side of things, and why he prefers performing with the electric and not the acoustic guitar primarily. La Famille Barberon Chez les Barberon, le cresson est une affaire de famille. Installés à Méréville, une petite ville de l’Essonne, ils pratiquent la cressiculture de père en fils. Ainsi, après le décès de leur parentsen 1979, les frères reprennent les Cressonnières familiales et commencent à travailler à leur compte . Mais suite à la disparition de l’un d'eux et le départ à la retraite de l’autre, Serge reprend l’activité avec sa femme Ghislaine et ses fils, David, Orian et Gatien. Aujourd'hui, la famille Barberon possède quatre cressonnières : les petits prés de Méréville, St Eloi, le Moulin de Courcelle et la vallée Colleau. Ces quatre sites représentent un hectare et demi de superficie, pour une production d’environ 60 000 bottes par an. Tout y est fait manuellement, y compris la reproduction des semences. Il y a 16 ans, ils font passer leurs cressonnières en agriculture biologique, ce qui leur a permis de « survivre ». Aujourd’hui, ils fournissent les magasins biologiques parisiens et font partie du groupement Terroir d’Avenir qui distribue le cresson auprès des chefs français. Car le cresson séduit de plus en plus la fine fleur de la gastronomie, et quelques grands noms font partie des clients de la famille Barberon. Ainsi Jean-François Piège, Vincent Ferniot, Cyril Lignac ou encore Yannick Alleno ont déjà succombé aux charmes gustatifs de cette petite plante de Méréville. Mais les Barberon fabriquent aussi leurs propres produits. Ghislaine fabrique désormais des produits transformés à base de cresson, fricassée de cresson, purée de cresson, soupe de cresson et surtout le crémousson, un pâté végétal, leur spécialité pour laquelle ils ont été primés au concours agricole. Vous avez-dit cresson ? Le cresson est un légume-feuille appartenant à la famille des crucifères, à l’instar de ses cousins brocolis, choux ou encore radis. Cette plante herbacée venue du Moyen-Orient est aujourd’hui répandue dans le monde entier. Au XVIe siècle, elle était utilisée pour ses vertus médicinales, puis elle s’est peu à peu introduite dans l'alimentation. Présent à l’état sauvage dans les cours d’eau, le Cresson s’est développé dans l’Oise, puis dans l’Essonne riche en sources d’eau pure. La culture du cresson Le cresson est une plante semi-aquatique qui pousse dans des fosses de 60 m de long sur 2 à 3 m de large, immergée dans dix centimètres d'eau de source en circulation permanente. En effet, le cresson nécessite que l’eau ne stagne pas. La récolte a lieu durant 9 mois, de septembre à mai. Chaque année, début juillet les cressonniers vident l’eau des fosses pour opérer un « curage » : ils arrachent le cresson de l’année précédente et lessivent les fossés. Puis, le cresson est semé dans les fosses encore sèches. Ensuite, les bassins sont immergés. La plante va alors pousser du mois de juillet au mois de mai de l'année suivante, et être récoltée toutes les 4 à six semaines, soit environ huit récoltes par an. Toute la culture s’effectue manuellement : la coupe se fait au couteau, le désherbage au râteau … Et il faut noter qu’en l’absence d’utilisation de pesticides, 3 à 4 coupes par an sont perdues, en revanche, comme le mentionne Mr Barberon « on sait s’qu’on mange ! ». Usage du Cresson Le cresson a une saveur poivrée, légèrement amère et piquante. Il est prisé par de nombreux grands chefs comme condiment, base de mousses et sauces ou en décoration de plats. Mais si vous en avez une botte chez vous, essayez de le manger cru en salade, en pesto sur un fromage frais de chèvre ou brebis ou cuisiné en potage, purée, tarte ou cake.   Quelques idées de recette simples Pesto de Cresson • 100 g de cresson • 1 gousse d'ail • 4 cuillère(s) à soupe de pignons de pin • Huile d’olive (ou de colza) • sel, poivre Mixer le cresson, la gousse d’ail et les pignons. Ajouter l’huile petit à petit, jusqu’à obtenir la consistance souhaitée. Saler et poivrer.  A utiliser sur du fromage frais, des pâtes ou des croûtons grillés. Potage de Cresson 4 personnes • 3 Pommes de terre • 1 botte de cresson • 1 gousse d’ail (ou selon les goûts) • Sel, poivre Peler et couper les pommes de terre en dés. Mettre dans une casserole, ajouter la gousse d’ail et couvrir d’eau. Laisser cuire 20 à 25 minutes. Ajouter le cresson préalablement lavé. Laisser mijoter encore 15 minutes. Mixer, saler et poivrer selon vos goûts. Servir bien chaud avec du pain grillé.  Vous pouvez y ajouter une pointe de cumin, c’est délicieux ! Tarte au cresson 4 personnes • 1 pâte brisée • ½ bûche de chèvre • 2 bottes de cresson • 3 œufs • 1 yaourt • Huile d’olive • Sel, poivre Préchauffer votre four à 180°. Garnir un moule à tarte avec la pâte. Piquer la pâte à la fourchette. Réserver la pâte au frais. Laver le cresson et le hacher grossièrement au couteau. Jeter le dans une casserole couverte avec un peu d’huile d’olive et laisser cuire pendant 5 minutes. Egoutter le cresson s'il a rendu de l’eau. Réserver. Mixer le yaourt, les œufs, sel et poivre. Ajouter le cresson et bien mélanger. Découper le fromage de chèvre en rondelles fines. Poser délicatement les rondelles de chèvre sur la pâte et verser la préparation au cresson. Cuire 30 minutes à 180°. As a follow up to our conversation last week with John Coulson, serial inventor and founder of SIDOG, we interviewed TJ Wright, founder of Mi Amore the first official licensee of SIDOG’s technology platform. TJ Wright has a fascinating story himself. For those of you not familiar with the name, TJ is a former Cincinnati Bengals cornerback who played professionally for many years until an injury forced him to move to arena football and eventually retire from the game altogether. While TJ figured out his next steps, he pursued his creative passions with a vengeance, which included forming a rap / rock back called Orian’s belt, pursuing a design degree through an art institute, designing his own merchandise such as accessories, wardrobe and shoes.

This episode I sit down with Orian Williams with a little help from Alex Beh. Orian Williams is a producer, known for Control (2007), Shadow of the Vampire (2000) and Big Sur (2013). Listen as we talk about how movies get made, Joy Division and jazz.

Orian Williams was born in Jackson, Mississippi and raised in Houston, Texas. A graduate of Baylor University, Orian moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990’s . After a few years as a successful producer of commercials, Orian formed a fortuitous alliance with the director E. Elias Merhige, whose work Orian was an early champion of after seeing his acclaimed University thesis feature film BEGOTTEN. Williams first film was to set up SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE the Academy Award nominated film starring Willem Dafoe and John Malkovich at Saturn Films, Nicolas Cage’s production company directed by Merhige. In 2004 Orian secured the rights to the book “Touching from a Distance,” a biography based on the life of Ian Curtis, lead singer of the band Joy Division, written by Ian’s widow, Deborah Curtis. Ian committed suicide in 1980 just 2 days before the bands first American tour and reformed under the name New Order. The highly regarded photographer/video director Anton Corbijn, directed and was his first feature film. CONTROL stars Sam Riley as Ian Curtis, Samantha Morton and Alexandra Maria Lara. CONTROL had its world premiere in Cannes 2007 opening the Director’s Fortnight and came away with 3 awards including Best European Film and 4 BAFTA nominations including one win for writer and 10 BIFA nominations with 5 wins including Best Picture. Orian then set his eyes on Jack Kerouac, producing two films about his life, a documentary about the book ‘Big Sur’ then the feature film BIG SUR Written and Directed by Michael Polish, BIG SUR stars, Jean Marc Barr as Kerouac and Josh Lucas as Neal Cassady, Kate Bosworth, Radha Mitchell and Henry Thomas also star. Currently Orian is producing WONDERLAND AVENUE with David Fincher, which focuses on Danny Sugerman and his young life in Los Angeles in the 1960’s, Fred Durst will direct, set up at New Regency.
