Almost ten years after they aired; Community, Parks & Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock continue to have massive fan bases. Considering their ratings when they were airing, it's safe to say they're more popular now than ever. For an all too brief time; they were NBC's "Comedy Night Done Right" block on Thursday Night. What was it like to watch a four new episodes of four great series on one night? Join host Matt Cail for a bi-weekly podcast that goes back and examines each and every time new shows aired on the same night. Did any classic episodes ever air on the same night? How did current events shape the content? What else was on TV that night?A podcast for fans of any of these four series - this is Comedy Night Podcasted Right!
You don't make friends with salad, but you can if you incessantly quote "The Simpsons". Well, at least the only kinds of friends worth keeping.Matt, Gus, and Sam are back and talking another great episode of one of TV's best shows ever. How does one pick an episode when there's over 700 to choose from? Well, ignore anything from the last 20 years and pick an early episode: in our case, "Lisa the Vegetarian".While it may be an odd choice since it's rarely considered to be among the series' top episodes, but it certainly was one of the most influential. Considering The Simpsons has to constantly shift its own backstory to keep the characters ages' in line with modern times, Lisa still remains a vegetarian almost thirty years later. But not only that, this episode is packed with quotable lines and sight gags, as well as classic bits like an Itchy and Scratchy and a Troy McClure educational video. We take the opportunity to discuss our own flings with vegetarianism; with Sam herself being inspired to give up meat for several years after watching this episode. Gus also talks about eating lentil soups when he gave it a try, and if you feel like trying Paul McCartney's ripping lentil soup, we've done the work to reverse the audio from "Maybe I'm Amazed" so you can hear it for yourself. Matt also gets the chance to deep dive into way to much knowledge on the earlier seasons of the Simpsons: the kind of skill only useful when making podcasts. So settle in: grab a plate of tripe, a bowl of gazpacho, and make sure to remember to BYOBB. Even if we have a brief technical issue with Gus' mic towards the end, it's still good, it's still good! The once-were-Geeks-in-High-School-but-now-proudly-identify-as-Freaks are back with another episode breakdown: this time of the seminal (hey, we used that word right!) series Freaks and Geeks. We went right to the start with the first episode, creatively titled "Pilot".What were you in school? A nerdy geek? A burnout freak? A bully jock? A... Hufflepuff? Well, regardless that the title breaks kids down into only clique, what we really learn in the Pilot and through this series is that we're more than the labels we're given. In fact, it's somewhat ironic that this show can make us nostalgic for what was most definitely NOT the greatest years of our lives. Not only do we love this show for the complexity of these characters; but the show was a veritable well spring for talent. Oddly enough, we've seen that most of these people somehow ended up in a Spider-man movie, since all roads lead to Spider-man.Some other strange connections we've learned or only just remembered was that Linda Cardellini was in Legally Blonde getting her hair permed, and it's possibly that Tina Fey stole the entire idea for Mean Girls from Freaks and Geeks. Just make sure you listen for any more hot takes!Follow Sam on IG: @sam_thistleFollow Gus' other podcast on IG: @primos_primerosFollow Matt's dog on IG: @itsindythedoodleFollow the show on IG: @comedynightpodcastedrightFollow the show on Twitter: @comedynightpod1Follow the show on Reddit: reddit.com/r/comedynightpodrightE-mail us and get it read on air: comedynightpodcastedright@gmail.com
Matt, Sam, and Gus are back with a heart-wrenching and hilarious episode of Scrubs - Season 1, Episode 4, My Old Lady. Get ready to feel all your feelings and a touch of emotional damage. This was Matt's first experience with Scrubs in probably 20 years, so if you're also unfamiliar with the show, Sam and Gus deliver a great breakdown of the series as a whole before we get into this episode. Sam delivers her TED talk on how the show actually ended after 8 seasons and the 9th season doesn't exist. Gus answers all our questions on hospital administration and inter-departmental politics.Don't worry; there's also plenty of our regular hijinks - Matt pulls deep cuts on the cult classic teen sex comedy "EuroTrip", Sam pulls deep cuts on classic board game commercials, and Gus pulls deep cuts on the Rob Schneider vehicle "The Animal" and we all can't pretend that we didn't see it when it came out.Let's not give too much else away, but just hit play knowing that Death, like this episode, can be pretty sneaky. You may not get hit by a literal ton of bricks, but you'll certainly get hit with a metaphorical one. It's okay if you need to ask an old lady for a hug afterwards.
The Gang Discusses the Best Episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Well, according to IMDb, anyways. Anyone not familiar with the series may think the title is strange, but just remember that "Charlie" in the title is an adjective. This week is Matt's pick, and along with Gus and Sam, we head over to Paddy's Pub where Charlie is forced to frantically dupe the new health inspector into thinking the bar is clean while everyone else is trying to pull off a chicken-steak-airline-miles scam. We spend a lot of time gushing over this episodes greatest technical feat, a 10-minute long tracking shot which follows Charlie and the health inspector all over Paddy's Pub - or "Carmine's: A Place for Steaks". It's an episode so tightly made, it makes you wonder if anything was left on the editing room floor. The TV episode, that is. Despite our insistence, there was plenty of audio from this recording that we had to cut out. Some lessons learned this week include: Matt realized that "Survivor" is actually not all that bad and shouldn't have been so hard on it; Gus learns that "Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum is different than "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush (and we're hoping that putting it in the description gets us a few extra listens); and Sam has tried pickled eggs, which honestly wasn't that great of a help in a trying time. There's also some second-hand electrical advice that Matt learned from his father, who is also not a licensed electrician, HBO's Succession is a different show than Apple TV+'s Severance, and It's Always Sunny is weirdly connected to both the classic (?) Super Mario Bros. movie and the upcoming new version. If enough people listen to this episode, we just may try to make Sam TikTok famous for eating pickled eggs. Or we'll just console ourselves by eating steaks purchased with airline miles.Either way, grab your favourite joke stool, have a seat, and enjoy the episode.Check out Gus' other podcast on IG @primos_primerosCheck out Sam's IG @sam_thistleCheck out Matt's new puppy on IG @itsindythedoodleContact us via e-mail comedynightpodcastedright@gmail.com, and still putting it out there the first person to send an e-mail will have it read on an upcoming show.TV Makes Sense & Comedy Night Podcasted Right on IG @comedynightpodcastedrighton Twitter @comedynightpod1And check out the subreddit for episode discussions: reddit.com/r/comedynightpodrightJust don't pretend like you understand the plan, because that's going to annoy me.
TV Makes Sense returns, this time with Sam's first pick: Broad City, Season 4, Episode 4, "Mushrooms". Abbi and Ilana go on a psilocybin induced adventure, which starts out magical and fun and in animation - animation that in fact won an Emmy. But, a call from Abbi's boss Dara sends the ladies on a mission to drop off some macrons. Abbi finds herself trying to hide the fact that she's high and tripping hard in front of her boss while Ilana finds herself in her dream sexual situation. You could say sitcom shenanigans ensue, but not sure if your typical sitcom includes sex toys and smushed cats.Matt, Gus, and Sam use this episode of Broad City as a springboard into inappropriate stories of their own: times they've been too intoxicated in front of co-workers or just tripping too hard in general. Most of our episodes lately have been explicit, but we definitely crank the adult content factor up here. And not just because Gus starts telling a story and realizing partway through that he's dropped about 6 F-bombs: the Canadians are just a bad influence on him.So, mix up a big bowl of mushrooms and yogurt, sit back, and enjoy the trip!
Comedy Night Podcasted Right is taking a summer hiatus and we are proud to present to you our special summer spin-off: TV Makes Sense.Every other week, Gus, Sam, or Matt will pick a great episode of television and the three will break it down. The plot, the cast, the behind the scenes info, or even how the episode has affected their real lives. Because life is messy and unstructured, but TV Makes Sense.Gus got the first pick, and he chose an all-time classic from an amazing series: Arrested Development, Season 3, Episode 2, "For British Eyes Only".You know this episode. All the Bluths show off their chicken dances, even though none of them have ever actually seen a chicken before. George ends up on house arrest and is ready to do anything to escape Lucille's libido. GOB and Tobias team up for a "prostate-tickular", er, a "protest-tacular" called "Free Bird", or, er, "Free Chicken". Tobias ends up getting "buy-curious" about wigs, and settles for getting 4,000 hair plugs. After George claims he's really been set-up by the Brits, Michael takes a trip to a curious street in the OC called "Wee Britain", where he meets the lovely Rita, played by Academy Award winning guest star Charlize Theron. But there's more to Rita than meets the eye; and Michael needs her eyes to check the paperwork to see if George is lying, since it's "For British Eyes Only".So, grab a whole thing of candy beans, and listen to the gang talk about how you need to cut toxic people out of your life: the kind of people that don't watch Arrested Development. Especially if you're going to quote Tobias in public, because people will think you are confessing some deep truths. On this very special episode of Comedy Night Podcasted Right, Matt, Gus, and Sam are talking about four Valentine's Day episodes of television. Well, a couple are pretending to celebrate other holidays, but that's a lie. We go back to February 11, 2010, and discuss NBC's Comedy Night Done Right line-up for that night: Community's "Communication Studies", Parks and Recreation's "Galentine's Day", The Office's "The Manager and the Salesman", and 30 Rock's "Anna Howard Shaw Day".The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics began the following day and while it felt super important at the time, we mostly agreed that we've stopped caring about the Games, and go into a tangent about that weirdly out of place Superstore Olympics episode. There's some wild speculations that include Matt's theory that it's Danny Pudi in the Greendale Human Being costume and a hot take on which Dunder Mifflin employee may have been the Scranton Strangler (and it's not any of the ones you may be thinking). Some lessons learned in this episode are examples of the "Awkward Shower" trope, a poorly quoted definitely of sociopathy from WebMD, a Canadian geography lesson for Gus, and an American cuisine lesson for Matt and Sam. Also, Justin Theroux leads us to Jennifer Anniston which leads us to John Mayer and then unto Taylor Swift; and it turns out there's plenty of break-up songs out there written about villains in the MCU (yet somehow we don't acknowledge Theroux wrote "Iron Man 2"...)The Valentine's Day themed episodes inspires Matt to give the listeners unasked for advice on love; but that's just because of what these implementations therein. No, wait, "implication", not "implementation".All of that, and an exciting announcement at the end of the episode about the future of Comedy Night Podcasted Right.E-mail the show at comedynightpodcastedright@gmail.comTwitter: @comedynightpod1Instagram: comedynightpodcastedrightreddit.com/r/comedynightpodrightSam's IG: sam_thistleGus' New Podcast's IG: primos_primeros"Movie Reference"
Gus, Sam, and Matt are back at it again, and this time the episode is shorter than the feature length film, "Avatar".We go back to February 4, 2010, and discuss the latest episodes from NBC's Comedy Night Done Right; Community's "Romantic Expressionism", Park and Recreation's "Sweetums", The Office's "Sabre", and 30 Rock's "Verna".We also take a brief look back into the life, career, and criminal misdeeds of 30 Rock's "Don Geiss", actor Rip Torn, and how he found himself in bank in the middle of the night in late January 2010. From a podcasting standpoint, there's also some practice on reading advertisements that we'll surely never get, and retracting praise for actors who Matt has since learned is wanted by the FBI for an attempted insurrection. There's also a distinct lack of audio drops from the series in this episode due to some software malfunction, but we more than make up for it.Some questions raised but never answered are: could Andy Dwyer have been Greendale's Asscrack Bandit; was New Coke a scheme to slip high fructose corn syrup into Coke Classic; and how likely would it have been to have your car damaged if you parked at Dunder Mifflin? Besides talking about aerolae and rubber nipples; there's also tangents into Cats, Bridgerton, Human Resources (the series and the profession), Juno, Beerfest, My 600 Pound Life, Breaking Bad, Office Space, Twister, Upload, The Hangover, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Paranormal Activity, Glengarry Glen Ross, and some requisite Anchorman quotes. The aforementioned wanted actor was in Chip Mantooth's posse in Anchorman, so we should've known he was a bad guy from the get-go.You can reach the show at comedynightpodcastedright@gmail.com; and don't forget that Matt will read any and all fan mail in an upcoming podcast, if he ever gets any.Follow the show on Instagram at comedynightpodcastedright and Twitter @comedynightpod1, or join the subreddit r/comedynightpodrightYou can find Sam at sam_thistle on Instagram; and look for her previous podcast "Unsolicited Flick Picks" wherever you get your podcasts. You can find Gus at _nu_is on Instagram, and he's promising that his own podcast will be ready soon.
Recorded in the depths of winter, today's episode is full Winter Madness on display. Gus, Sam, and Matt go back to January 21, 2010 to discuss the new episodes of Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock that aired that night. Matt concludes the tale of Conan O'Brien quitting NBC by releasing his two weeks' notice just as a major natural disaster occurred, and some lessons learned are: Kanye was somehow involved, Conan should just buy a DVR, and it's okay to give up on all your hopes and dreams for 45 million dollars. Hopefully, we never have to discuss the Jay Leno Show again. We break down the new episodes while falling into some serious IMDb traps, express hard feelings about the Wordle craze, praise Lin-Manuel Miranada's work, reminisce about the short-lived CBS sitcom "$h*! My Dad Says", and discuss the unfortunate consequence of sharing your name with well-known white supremacist. Gus can't wait for Mark to just Brandanaquit, Sam needs a ranked list of Greendale's hottest students and faculty members, and Matt thinks he's figured out how Michael came up with the idea for Scott's Tots. All that, plus some microphone issues and barking dogs, in another Comedy Night Podcasted Right which puts Avatar's runtime to shame.
It's a new year, and we officially begin our new format. Matt, Gus, and Sam go deep on discussing a night full of NBC Comedy Night Done Right goodness.Even though there was no new Office, there were plenty of great guest stars to make this a great night of television. While we may go off on some tangents about wanting to either join the Tune Squad or become pet detectives, disagreeing on How I Met Your Mother's ending, likening the drama on Jersey Shore to other notable events, and remembering celebrities who have passed away this year: we go deep on these four episodes and have a great time doing it.In the Olds, we begin a two-parter on Liz Lemon's ex-boyfriend, Conan O'Brien, to try and learn why he quit his childhood dream job of hosting the Tonight Show. We also learn that people love sharing terrible news on late night talk shows. So strap in like your about to take an MRI, claw to your desk light you might get dragged away kicking and screaming, find a body pillow to cuddle up with, and listen to this episode while you age gracefully. Comedy Night Podcasted Right is coming back in 2022! So sorry about the delay, but after much deliberation, Matt has gone out and found two new co-hosts to help get us all through the wild and wonderful time the Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock all aired at the same time.Much like Dunder Mifflin accounting, we're calling this episode number Keleven so we can squeeze it in. Listen as Matt and our brand new co-hosts, Gus and Sam, get to know each other since they were strangers that answered a want ad on Reddit! Certainly different then the usual format, we talk about different television shows, why we love these four. The regularly planned episodes will start back up in January, but for the meantime, enjoy this bonus episode.E-mail the show: comedynightpodcastedright@gmail.comTwitter: @comedynightpod1Instagram: @comedynightpodcastedrightJoin the subreddit: reddit.com/r/comedynightpodcastedrightGus' IG: @_Nu_IsSam's IG: @sam_thistle Keep an eye out for Gus' podcast, Primos Primeros: Lost & Bilingual, coming out next year!
No new episode this week. In fact, no new episodes for several weeks, as I'm taking a break - or as they say in the business - a hiatus.Sorry folks!I've also used the following site as a jumping off point on learning how to be an ally to Canada's Indigenous people: https://www.globalcitizen.org/en/content/how-to-support-indigenous-communities-canada/Please take some time today for self-reflection: to mourn the children who never returned home and to be compassionate for those who survived residential schools.
We have arrived at the end of 2009, and we've got four delightful Christmas specials to look back upon today!Original airing on December 10, 2009, I'm discussing Community S01E12, "Comparative Religion"; Parks and Recreation S02E12, "Christmas Scandal"; The Office S06E13, "Secret Santa"; and 30 Rock S04E08, "Secret Santa".Not only do two episodes have the same title; but there's tons of other coincidences and links between these shows and everything else airing on Thursday that it must be some sort of Christmas miracle. Some other tangents I explore are: the opening of the highest grossing movie of all time, "Avatar", and what few things I remember about it; getting a quota of at least one Canadian character per night; a brand new record for the amount of quotes I use from a single episode; another record in how many times we see one director in one night; and a very tenuous link to Festivus.Happy Holidays; everyone, even if it's only the middle of June!
I'm skipping past Thanksgiving since nothing new was on TV, bringing us one week closer to the end of 2009.Going back to December 3, 2009, on the air tonight was: Community S01E11 - "The Politics of Human Sexuality", Parks and Recreation S02E11 - "Tom's Divorce", The Office S06E12 - "Scott's Tots", and 30 Rock S04E07 - "Dealbreakers Talk Show #0001".It's been the night I've wanted to talk about for weeks as the show has finally caught up to the beginning of the Tiger Woods' sex scandal. What a fun coincidence that tonight's episodes deal with dating escorts, getting divorced, disappointing children, and setting impossible to reach life goals. Sometimes all the starts align, but then I develop a conscious and realize I don't want to fall for cheap tabloid stories. As mentioned at the start of the show; check out another great podcast, the Offbeat Worm Podcast, that I had a lot of fun guest starring on this week: https://offbeatworm.podbean.com.
The run-times are getting leaner and meaner. Not that much meaner. I'm still making fun of Jay Leno; but tonight, Oprah Winfrey gets some criticism too.Going back to November 19, 2009, tonight's schedule includes: Community S1E10 - "Environmental Science", Parks and Recreation S2E10 - "Hunting Trip", The Office S6E11 - "Shareholder Meeting", and 30 Rock S4E06 - "Sun Tea". It's NBC's Green Week, so they're forcing the shows to shoehorn in environmental conscious themes. Being told by a massive corporation to be eco-friendly is handled with the irreverence you should expect. And, in breaking news, Oprah Winfrey has announced that she will be ending her daytime talk show at the end of its 25th season. I'll handle that news with the irreverence you should expect.Buy a brownie online, take some general anesthetic, hop in a complimentary limo, and leave your hunting license at home!
I once again fail at coming in at only an hour long episode, but there's just too much to talk about. We catch up to November 12, 2009, and the new episodes of Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock that aired that night. On the schedule tonight are the following Community S1E09 - "Debate 109", Parks and Recreation S2E09 - "The Camel", The Office S6E10 - "Murder", and 30 Rock S4E05 - "The Problem Solvers". The uncertain future of NBC looms over this episode, and the impending sale of the network to Comcast. But, low viewership be damned: these were four great episodes. The end of 2009 and heading into 2010 was a bizarre time, and we're just starting to get into it. Some other tangents: Dolly Parton was poorly covered or parodied several times on these series, we learn that Canadian politeness and the accent go hand in hand, and I appreciate these shows the same way that Tom Haverford treats abstract art.As mentioned in this episode, I appeared on the Offbeat Worm podcast a few weeks ago. Please go check them out here: https://offbeatworm.podbean.com/ Or, look them up on whatever app or website you're listening to this on.
Onwards we go, into November 5, 2009, and the new episodes of Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock that aired that night. On the schedule tonight is I talk about Community S1E08 - "Home Economics", Parks and Recreation S2E08 - "Ron and Tammy", The Office S6E09 - "Double Date", and 30 Rock S4E04 - "Audition Day". After a 90 minute episode last week; I decide to buckle down and tighten up. I give "What Everyone Watched Instead" a makeover, and since there wasn't anything good in the news: I talk about Bonfire Night, celebrated annually in Britain on November 5th. That gives me plenty of ammunition to talk about all sorts of stuff. Meghan Markle comes up a few times for oddly relevant reasons, and so does Cruella De Vil, for an entirely different reason. I believe I've also found irrefutable proof that Michael Scott knows how to ride a bicycle before Oscar teaches him in Season 7. I also bring up Chekov's Gun several times while I probably don't actually have any idea of what I'm talking about.
We are heading back October 29, 2009 and the new episodes of Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock that aired that night. With Halloween just two days away; I talk about four Halloween specials, I talk about Community S1E07 - "Introduction to Statistics", Parks & Recreation S2E07 - "Greg Pikitis", The Office S6E08 - "Koi Pond", and 30 Rock S4E03 - "Stone Mountain". There's A LOT of tangents in here. Thanks in advance for tolerating the extra long run-time.I finally talk about one of 2009's biggest news stories - Michael Jackson's death. Other less than fun topics include Louis CK's guest appearances on Parks and the new deleted cold open to Koi Pond. But; there's plenty of fun stuff too; like numerous references to the Dark Knight, some insights into how boring my life was in 2009, and brief reminder of how not-famous Jimmy Fallon was. Definitely had some complex topics that warranted a little bit extra runtime. This will not be the norm; and I'll be going back to a short run times going forwardTOO LATE TO EDIT NOTE: At around 1:03:45; I foolishly ask if this is the first time Kenneth's hometown has been mentioned on screen. I - way too late to try to edit out this mistake - have just re-watched "Blind Date", the THIRD episode of the SERIES, and Jack mentions it several times while playing poker against Kenneth. Forgive me, I'm working hard on being better and will try to avoid such embarrassment in the future.
A look back at October 22, 2009 and the new episodes of Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock that aired that night.I talk about Community S1E06 - "Football, Feminism and You", Parks & Recreation S2E06 - "Kaboom", The Office S6E07 - "The Lover", and 30 Rock S4E02 - "Into the Crevasse". Some other tangents include: the most anyone has talked about Windows Vista since the '00s, how the Olympic flame is lit, volunteerism and the "iParticipate" program, and the usage of full body Lycra suits by sports fans.
A look back on October 15, 2009: the first time Community, Parks & Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock all aired new episodes in the same two hour block.I look at Community S1E05 - "Advanced Criminal Law", Parks & Recreation S2E05 - "Sister City", The Office S6E06 - "Mafia", and 30 Rock S4E01 - "Season 4". I also get lost on some other subjects; like how often kidneys come up, the Balloon Boy Hoax, how many shows involve "the team investigating" the issue of the week, and recap of all the major storylines happening on each series leading up to this night. If you don't listen to this episode; you go to jail; right away!
A feature-length trailer! Long story short, I spent a lot of time doing a lot of research for a lot of stuff that would be unusable for content. I could've hung on to it; but all of this information was in my head now; so why not just get it out.Various topics explored - live reunion specials, now banned episodes, My Name is Earl, Kanye West at the 2009 MTV Video Awards, and a lot of insight into how I'm a sad television nerd. This is not the format of the rest of the series, but instead, it's... something. Check out the first 6 minutes if you want to get a feel for what the series will be. Check out the whole thing for a few hot takes, and some many, many cold ones.
