Conversations had the right way. Welcome to 'Cool Conversations' hosted by Kenton Cool. Kenton is one of the world’s leading high-altitude climbers, and a highly engaging and inspiring motivational speaker. He was the first person in history to complete the ‘Everest Triple Crown’, reaching the summit of Mount Everest, Nuptse and Lhotse in one continuous push from base camp and has stood on the roof of the world, Mount Everest, 14 times. In short, he's got lots of stories to tell, and it's on Cool Conversations where he shares them. With regular guests from the world of sport featuring on the show, Kenton and his guests share their epic adventures, life lessons, experience and expertise to inspire you.
This week, Kenton sits down to talk to Jay Whiting at Everest Base Camp. Jay is not a professional climber or a professional athlete - he is a full-time solicitor in London - yet when this episode was recorded, he was preparing to take on an enormous Himalayan challenge. Jay talks to Kenton about his dreams of achieving the Everest Triple Crown this year - climbing Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse in one season. Only two people have ever done this to date - our host Kenton, and another professional mountaineer, Garrett Madison. Jay lives in Essex, which is not well-known for its mountainous terrain, and has spent hours and hours on a stair-master in training. Listen now to find out how Jay got on and if you find his story inspiring, please consider donating to his chosen charity, LandAid. In this special episode, Kenton interviews Karl Egloff at Everest Base Camp as they both prepare for their Everest expeditions. Karl is an extreme mountaineer, mountain guide, runner and speed climber with a host of impressive Fastest Known Times (FKTs) to his name. Later this month, he is aiming to become the fastest person to move from Basecamp to the Summit and back to Basecamp with no oxygen. Not something for the faint-hearted! There is no doubt that Karl has the experience to do this - he talks Kenton through a potted history with great energy and enthusiasm, which includes him mentioning in passing that he summited Kilimanjaro six times in one week! Tune in now to be entertained and inspired... Karl's book choice: Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer Karl's music choice: "Soft" Latino music
If you like running, this week's episode is for you! Kenton sits down to talk to Hem Rana, a remarkable man who 'got the running bug' after going along to a park run six years ago and has since completed multiple ultras. Hem talks to Kenton about his childhood in Nepal and his application to join the Gurkhas. He remains a serving Gurkha today and has lived in the UK for 27 years working for a variety of Gurkha regiments attached to the British Army. Hem used to run only because he had to, for fitness tests and PT sessions, but in 2019 he tried his local park run (5km) and loved it. Out of curiosity, he gradually built up his distances, moved from road to trail, and developed his confidence. He tells Kenton that he has completed several 100 milers, the Winter Spine race (twice!), UTMB and the Bob Graham Round, to name a few. Hem truly believes that everyone is capable of doing what he has done. If you're looking for a bit of inspiration today, look no further!
Mark Evans has been leading expeditions for over 40 years and he speaks to Kenton from Oman, where he has lived for 25 years. He has very recently completed a 30 day expedition through the Empty Quarter, travelling by foot and by camel, following in the footsteps of Bertram Thomas who first made this journey in 1931. Mark shares numerous stories with Kenton, almost as if they are sitting around the fire in the middle of the desert. They cover clothing, food, hospitality, traditions, geographical boundaries and locust swarms! Mark also talks about his work with young people in the outdoor environment - the why behind his MBE. Belinda founded Explorers Connect, encouraging people to engage in life-changing outdoor challenges and she has written a book, Adventure Revolution which delves into why adventure is essential to our wellbeing. Belinda talks to Kenton about her experience of adventure and what it has taught her including life-defining moments, turning fear into excitement, social prescribing, connecting with nature, and expanding comfort zones. You will be planning your own adventure before the episode is over! Recommended read: Atomic Habits and My Side of the Mountain Recommended listen: Coldplay Live
Aged 19, Jude Kriwald cycled from England to India, a journey that he describes in vivid detail in this week's episode of Cool Conversations. From embracing Iranian hospitality to sneaking through Tibet, his first major adventure left him with many stories to tell, and a taste for more. Jude Kriwald is an adventurer and a volunteer. He founded adventurementor.org to support others in their quest for adventure, and he was recently named 'Emerging Leader of the Year' by the British Exploring Society. Last year, Jude travelled to West Africa and followed an unmarked track through the Liberian jungle with his bicycle. His film about the experience, Alone Across Gola, has already won a Best Documentary Award and will be released later this year. This is a fantastic conversation and reminds us all to not rest on our laurels, but to pick up our dreams and go out to find adventure! For most people, running a 100 mile race is an enormous undertaking, that requires months of diligent training. This week's guest, Basil Heaney, takes a different approach. He enjoys racing more than training, which means that he runs multiple ultra-distance races every year. Most recently, he ran the Winter Downs 200, the Winter Spine race (268 miles), and the Arc of Attrition (100 miles) within a seven week period. Some may call him crazy! Kenton talks to Basil about why he chooses to do this and how he approaches it. They also discuss Basil's 'passion project', a charity called Into Ultra that he has recently founded to help people whose financial barriers prevent them from running ultras. Although Kenton has not run an ultra, he and Basil find common ground in a love for the outdoors, the joy of running, the freedom of ski touring and a shared appreciation of Italian refugios! In 2005, Lorraine McCall left her house to 'go for a walk' on her 40th birthday and didn't stop until she had walked up, and between, all 284 Munros in Scotland (2 Munros have since been downgraded, so there are now officially only 282!) This was a journey of 1,500 miles on foot. Ten years later, Lorraine tackled all 222 Corbetts to celebrate her 50th birthday, and most recently, Lorraine became the first woman to summit all 231 Grahams in a single push in 2024 (she's about to turn 60!) We think you will agree that Lorraine is Kenton's most under-stated, humble, unassuming guest so far. She has walked, cycled and kayaked thousands of miles across Scotland purely for the love of it. She shuns technology and her footprint on social media is tiny. In this episode we learn all about the classification of hills in Scotland and the challenges of getting up some of them, but mostly we come away with an appreciation for Lorraine who found her chosen adventures and embraced them wholeheartedly, overcoming the difficulties and continually finding joy in them. What's Lorraine reading? Music in the Dark by Sally Magnusson What's Lorraine listening to? Celtic Connections playlist
This week Kenton dives into (excuse the pun!) a fascinating conversation with wild swimmer, author and journalist, Ella Foote. Ella has been swimming outside since her childhood, when her parents used to take her to the seaside and they spent hours in the sea. These days she is editor of Outdoor Swimmer magazine, she is founder of Dip Advisor - a company that takes people on swim adventures - and she is author of 'How to Wild Swim'. Kenton and Ella discuss everything from kit and equipment, to water quality and community. Ella's love for swimming outdoors is quite simply infectious and we challenge you to not want to dip your toe in the water after listening to this episode. What Ella's reading: Breaking Waves by Emma Simpson What Ella's listening to: The Cure's new album, Songs of a Lost World
This week's podcast guest is Lise Wortley who has been on some fascinating journeys, conceived out of her curiosity about adventurous women from history. Lise has chosen to follow in the footsteps of women who 'pushed the boundaries' in the world of adventure in the early 20th century and who unwittingly played a huge part in making adventure accessible to women today. She tells Kenton about the depth of her research, the clothing she has sourced, and the people she has met whilst following in the footsteps of some remarkable women in India, Scotland, Iran and France. What's Lise reading? Climbing Days by Dorothy Pilley What's Lise listening to? Drum and Base, and The Guardian podcast every morning
It's the first episode of 2025 and we have a spectacular Tales from the Trails (TFTT) for you! Kenton recorded this whilst he was trekking to Everest Base Camp in November and it is the perfect way to brighten up a cold January day. Kenton shares colourful descriptions of the people, valleys, rivers, views, animals and landmarks that he passes as he treks from Namche Bazaar to Everest Base Camp with a small team of trekkers. From the evocative sounds of prayer wheels to the rushing of rivers and the breathlessness of hiking at altitude, you will get a real taste of life in the Khumbu Valley and we hope that it will set your tastebuds tingling for the adventures that lie ahead in 2025!
Whilst trekking in the Khumbu region recently, Kenton bumped into 'super guide' Lakpa Rita Sherpa, and took the opportunity to interview him for the podcast. Lakpa Rita was born in Thame, a small village high in the Himalayas, and followed in his father's footsteps becoming a mountain guide and Sirdar. Lakpa Rita has lived in Seattle since 2000 and has led multiple expeditions all over the world. He first summited Everest in 1990 and has stood atop the world's highest mountain 17 times. Lakpa Rita now runs his own guiding company, Khangri Experience, and personally prefers to climb 'smaller' mountains these days, as well as leading treks in Nepal, the USA and elsewhere. Kenton learns things about Lakpa Rita that he didn't know during this conversation, so we're sure that you will too. Enjoy! Melissa Arnot is a mountain guide, Everest summiteer, adventurer and co-founder of The Juniper Fund. More recently, she has taken up ultra-running and in this episode of Cool Conversations, Kenton talks to her about her experiences in the 450km Tor des Glaciers race a few months ago. Melissa didn't finish the race and has taken a lot of learnings from her unfortunate DNF. She continued for far longer than many of us would believe possible yet still struggled to process her 'failure' for several weeks afterwards. This is the second time that Melissa has been on the pod, and we think you will quickly understand why she is welcome anytime!
This episode of Cool Conversations is a very special one because Kenton sits down with his close friend and Number One Sherpa, Dorjee Gyelzen. Dorjee grew up in Pangboche, Nepal which sits at 4,000m altitude. Life in the high Himalayas is challenging, but through hard work and commitment Dorjee has forged a career in mountaineering and Kenton rates him as one of the best! Dorjee has climbed Mount Everest 23 times and he has summited Ama Dablam (his favourite mountain) an astonishing 27 times. Listen now to hear about Dorjee's childhood and his journey into mountaineering, and to learn about his Buddhist faith and his deep love and sense of responsibility for his family.
This week, we welcome rugby legend, Lewis Moody, to Cool Conversations! Lewis was a member of the 2003 World Cup winning England rugby squad and he amassed 71 caps for England during his career. Lewis talks to Kenton fresh from a 2003 team reunion, which, we learn, do not happen very regularly at all! Lewis talks quite openly about the stigma that was attached to showing vulnerability or weakness in his early days as a player and how he now recognises that it is so important to take the time to ask how someone is, or to ask for help. He now runs a successful coaching business and borrows many lessons from his playing days when working with executives. Lewis tells Kenton about The Lewis Moody Foundation which raises money for the Brain Tumour Charity, and about his love for difficult physical challenges. It's a good one, we hope you enjoy it!
This week, Kenton talks to Sequoia Schmidt who is a remarkable business woman, climber, base-jumper, author and philanthropist. Sequoia started her business at 17 years old after an 'unstable' childhood that she discusses with Kenton. After nearly 20 years, she has now taken herself back to school and is fully embracing the Global Executive Leadership course at Yale, sharing her own experiences of running a company with her peers and learning a huge amount from each of them too. Sequoia talks very openly about the tough times she has experienced in her life and how she uses her strength, learnt from her late father, to navigate through these times. This is an emotionally charged conversation, and one that has both Sequoia and Kenton. in tears at one point, so be prepared!
Sid is a high-altitude mountain guide, a heli-ski guide and more recently a self-taught builder! Sid lives in The Cascades in Washington State and he is currently building a house in the middle of nowhere and thoroughly enjoying the process. Sid and Kenton met at Everest Basecamp in 2018 when they were both guiding there. Sid has summited Everest three times, from both the South Side and the North Side, and they share stories about their experiences in this week's episode of Cool Conversations. Sid spends a lot of his time heli-ski guiding and has built up a base of loyal clients who return to ski with him year after year. He talks about the importance of building their trust and also understanding skill levels of the group to keep everyone safe on the mountain. Kenton describes him as a renegade or a non-conformist, which he agrees with, but not at the expense of safety. This is a Cool Conversation between two friends that touches on many different subjects, so be prepared for the conversation to go anywhere!
This week, Kenton speaks to Dr Sarah Ruggins who, it is fair to say, leaves him lost for words a few times! Sarah embraced academia when she was younger and she holds four degrees in four different subjects. Her interest in philosophy and economics led her to a career in finance where she now holds a senior position in one of the biggest wealth management companies in the UK. Sarah is also a phenomenal athlete. As a junior, she ran Junior Olympic qualifying times in the 10,000m and had a promising future until a horrific illness left her bedridden for a very long time. Since recovering, she has learnt to ride a bike and has recently completed the epic Transcontinental Race (TCR) from Roubaix in Paris to Istanbul in Turkey. She covered 4,400km in 13 days over multiple mountain ranges, and with very little sleep. Her determination, passion and resilience shine through very strongly in this conversation – enjoy!
Benny Lieber is an accomplished climber and is also described by Kenton as 'the next generation of high-altitude mountain guides'. Benny and Kenton met at Everest Base Camp earlier this year and hit it off immediately with Kenton feeding off Benny's unquenchable energy. Benny is a product developer by trade, but gave it up for a life in the mountains back in 2016. He moved to Alaska and lived for several years in his car before being able to afford an apartment, but he has now found his niche and is a full-time mountain guide. He has many summits to his name including Everest, Lhotse, K2, Manaslu and Vinson and we are certain there are more to come. Kenton and Benny discuss the changing world of mountain guiding, they compare stories of different mountains, and Benny describes the luxury of absolute wilderness in Alaska. Listen now to this high-energy episode!
A fellow mountain guide and mountaineer, Brent Bishop first summited Everest in 1994 and now describes himself as an 'aging climber'. He talks with Kenton about many of his mountain expeditions and how his family history helped to frame his experiences. Brent is a successful businessman and has juggled life in the mountains with his businesses. Last year he suffered a huge heart attack at his local climbing centre, despite being fit and healthy, but that hasn't stopped him! This episode is a classic Cool Conversations - lots of interesting topics covered and a few previously unknown facts uncovered!
This week, Kenton talks to Ed Jackson, a former professional rugby player who sustained a spinal cord injury in 2017 and is now living a very active and adventurous life as an incomplete quadriplegic. Ed's remarkable story is documented in his new film, The Mountain Within Me, which is released in cinemas later this week. Ed tells Kenton how the mountains have supported both his physical and emotional recovery, and how his experiences have inspired him to set up a charity for young adults who have experienced physical and/or mental trauma. Ed's positivity in the face of the daily challenges that he still faces is extraordinary. His acceptance of his injuries, his willingness to push his limits and his determination to find the good in his injuries is a story of its own. Buckle up and prepare to be moved! THE MOUNTAIN WITHIN ME, directed by Polly Steele, is in UK cinemas from 23rd August, with Preview Q&A screenings from 19th August. For more information head to: mountain-within-me.film
Today we treat you to an extra six minutes of Kenton speaking to Ben and Georgie Ainslie. After they had finished their 'official' podcast recording, they continued chatting and the conversation was just too good not to be shared!
In this week's episode of Cool Conversations, Kenton speaks to broadcaster and adventurer Ben Fogle whilst they are both sailing through Alaska. Ben has lived an extraordinary life, completing ambitious challenges and travelling extensively - he has visited over 160 countries around the world. He regularly finds himself visiting people who live off the beaten track and his passion for learning more about their lives and the wilderness around them is abundantly clear during this conversation. Kenton and Ben are on the lookout for whales whilst talking, and you will be treated to colourful descriptions of the landscape around them. Apologies for the sound quality from Alaska!
Sir Ben Ainslie is a name many people will recognise. As Britain's most successful sailor, Ben won medals in five consecutive Olympic games from 1996, including Gold at the four games held between 2000 and 2012. Ben and his wife, Georgie, join Kenton today to talk about life after the Olympics. Ben and Georgie make a formidable partnership. Whilst Ben is Team Principal and CEO of Ineos Britannia - the team attempting to win the Americas Cup for Britain for the first time - Georgie has founded a start-up called Ainslie + Ainslie. Kenton discusses with them the importance of communication, the intensity of competition, the constant balance between work and family, leadership under pressure and, of course, their new night powder which is working wonders for Kenton's sleep... This episode is one not to be missed even if, like Kenton, you're more comfortable on dry land than on a boat. https://benainslie.com/
This week, Kenton sits down with Ross and Hugo Turner, also known as The Turner Twins. The identical twins are adventurers who embark on a variety of different challenges, often linked to scientific studies due to sharing the same DNA. Kenton talks to them about their recent project driving the first fully electric 2-seater convertible MG from London to Shanghai, visiting 27 countries along the way. They also discuss the results of embarking on omnivore vs vegan diets, when they compared weighted exercises with bodyweight exercises, and when they compared 20 minutes of exercise to 40 minutes of exercise. Did they experience double the benefit from double the exercise? Hugo and Ross encourage everyone to be curious and willing to experiment. Their studies have sometimes led to unexpected results and this is a really interesting conversation.
Lukas is a mountaineer, geographer, adventurer, leader of countless expeditions and founder of Furtenbach Adventures. He has established Furtenbach Adventures as one of the premier operators on Everest, and he and Kenton reflect on the 2024 season together. Lukas was one of only three foreign operators granted permits to climb Everest from the North Side this year and he tells Kenton about the challenges he faced. Kenton and Lukas discuss the commercialism of mountaineering versus 'real' alpinism and they consider what the future of Everest might look like. This is a captivating conversation between two guides who both know Everest extremely well.
This week, Kenton sits down with Arctic photographer, Martin Hartley, to hear about his latest project. Martin has recently returned from a research project on a boat off Norway, photographing previously undiscovered species from the deep sea - something he never thought he would do. Martin and Kenton talk about sea ice levels, macro-level photography, the terrifying effect of global warming, and 'rowing the boat'! This is the very definition of a cool conversation. Listen now!
Tim Howell is an alpinist, a mountaineer, a climber and one of the world's leading wingsuit base-jumpers. Kenton sat down to talk to Tim at Everest Basecamp where he is based in pursuit of his next goal: claiming a record high-altitude wingsuit flight. Tim and Kenton talk about risk-taking: the importance of balancing risk and understanding the conditions in pursuit of goals. It is not unusual for Tim to say 'no' and climb back down mountains when the risk is simply too high. They discuss the value of community and how the support of others helps Tim to explore new jumps and push his own boundaries. We will let you know how he gets on with his record attempt!
Anna Hemmings is a phenomenal athlete who has been crowned World Champion six-times and competed at two Olympic games. Her chosen sport is marathon kayaking which requires high levels of strength, endurance, and skill (you will learn how difficult Kenton finds it to sit in a kayak, let alone race in one!). Anna's story is a remarkable one: she tells Kenton how she was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome at the peak of her career and had to overcome huge challenges to get back to the top of her sport. Since retiring from racing in 2008, Anna has built a successful career as a keynote speaker, leadership coach and training consultant supporting organisations to develop high-performing teams and achieve their goals.
This week, Kenton sits down with James Peach - a brand strategist by trade, who likes to add side-helpings of adventure to keep things interesting! James has worked for brands such as Innocent, Uber and Vinted and he shares some fascinating insights into their cultures and his experiences with these organisations. He talks about 'hustle', 'toe-stepping' and 'teetering on the edge of the red' amongst other things. Interestingly, James has a self-declared obsession with time, wanting to squeeze value out of every minute of every day. This has led to some great adventures including walking across Argentina, cycling around the world, and completing a tandom triathlon challenge. This episode is slightly longer than normal, but we hope you enjoy the rich discussion between Kenton and James.
This week, Kenton talks to Justin Wateridge who is MD of boutique travel agency, Steppes Travel, and extremely passionate about travel. Justin has visited over 80 countries around the world and talks enthusiastically about each and every one of them. Justin travels with curiosity, learning about aspects of people and culture that aren't covered by headlines or magazine articles. He is also a heartfelt conservationist and he has run the London Marathon twice in a rhino suit, raising money for Save the Rhinos. Justin often combines his love of travel with adventure, and in July this year he and a friend are participating in the Yukon 1000, a tough multi-day canoe race down the Yukon river through wilderness, rapids and bear country. Kenton and Justin exchange travel stories and experiences throughout this conversation - enjoy!
This week, Kenton chats to Anna Wells who, just two weeks ago, became the first female to ever complete a Winter Munro Round. Anna climbed all 282 Munros between 22nd December 2023 and 14th March 2024 - a feat only achieved by three others in history. Anna took three months leave from her day job and careered head first into this awe-inspiring challenge. She climbed mountains in all weathers, many of them on her own, and she clocked some very long days. At the end of the challenge she covered 155km and 11,000m of ascent in three days! Anna is super passionate about being in the mountains and she and Kenton really hit it off in this episode!
This week, Kenton speaks to ultra-runner and endurance coach, Allie Bailey. Allie's story is not straight-forward. From the age of 14, she battled with addiction to alcohol, she was severely depressed, and she suffered numerous mental health crises. She started running in the midst of her addiction and completed many marathons and ultra-marathons whilst hungover or under the influence. This only served to strengthen her conviction that she didn't have a problem because she was a runner. Kenton and Allie discuss some of her memories from her darker days, her journey in running, and her fascination with how our brains work. Allie's honest, direct and straight-talking approach is refreshing and engaging. Her book, "There is No Wall" is out now.
This week, Kenton chats to Jono Sumner who runs a very successful business with his brother and his best friend. The threesome co-founded LifeJacket Skin in 2020 after several of their friends, and Jono himself, were diagnosed with cancer. LifeJacket has a single vision: to halt the increase in skin cancer, which is the world's most common cancer even though it is 90% preventable. Their skin protection products range from sun cream and moisturiser to body wash and anti-chafe bars. Jono is super passionate about what he does and he gives a very compelling argument to 'invest in yourself', whether that be skin protection, nutrition, health or lifestyle. Kenton learnt a few things during this podcast recording, and we are sure that you will too!
Kari is a Swiss born mountain guide who was the founder of 'Kobler and Partner', a highly successful guiding company. Having led 38 expeditions to 8,000m peaks, Kari's focus has shifted from chasing high altitude summits to enjoying what he calls a 'rich life'. With his booming voice and infectious laugh, Kari really is one of the big characters of the Himalayan guiding world. Today Kari splits his time between Mendoza in Argentina, Nepal, and Switzerland where he seems to spend at least as much time rock climbing as he does guiding.
A much overdue return to expedition live, this time on the slopes of the highest peak in the Americas. Standing at 6,961m, Aconcagua provides a fabulous introduction to high altitude climbing and is the focus of this weeks podcast. In this episode Kenton teams up with client and friend Richard Williams as they attempt this mountain of ancient volcanic origin. Follow their journey from the vibrant city of Mendoza, through the dusty plains to base camp and then higher towards the lofty summit. Their attempted ascent takes a bizarre twist as they try to navigate an ever-changing forecast that predicts wind speeds that would literally blow them off the mountain. This really is a must listen for anyone that has the ambition to dip their toe into the realm of expedition life.
This week, I speak to Hugo Tagholm, current CEO of Oceana and former CEO of Surfers Against Sewage. Hugo has fused his work with his passion and has dedicated his life to protecting our oceans through innovative ideas, collaborations, campaigns, communications and action. Hugo is an enthusiastic sportsman, with surfing being his number one sport, and it was through this that he first became aware of the devastation of our oceans. He felt the need to take action and this episode provides a glimpse into his fascinating story. Hugo's passion for what he does is palpable and his desire to create hope for us all comes across loud and clear. Listen and learn!
This week, I speak to ultra-runner and current 50K World Champion, Carla Molinaro. Her energy, enthusiasm and joy for life come through in bucket loads during this episode and we defy any listener not to find it infectious! Carla grew up in the UK and now lives and trains in Cape Town. She holds the World Record for running from Lands End to John O'Groats (LEJOG) and became 50km road World Champion in November 2023. Talking to Carla was refreshing and uplifting – she has a joyful approach to training, she doesn't use lots of gadgets or data, and she loves what she does. Carla set up her own business, SCY for Runners (Strength, Conditioning and Yoga for Runners), in 2020 and her online platform helps hundreds of runners to stay injury free, whilst building strength and flexibility. Find out more about Carla at www.carlamolinaro.com and enjoy the episode!
This week we grab an opportunity. After climbing Pen-Y-Fan in Wales with photographer and community champion Dan James, we utilised the time on the drive home to interview this special individual. Today, Dan follows the path of ‘what feels best' in the moment, pursuing what his heart tells him rather than what society deems best. What would appear to most as a carefree journey through life, actually means Dan is closer to those around him, generating bonds that have meaning and purpose. But it wasn't always like this. Dan tells me about his time in the Royal Air Force working as a bomb disposal expert before a freak accident cut short his career and how this in turn helped him understand what's important to him. Dan's outlook and enthusiasm for life is infectious, I value his friendship and generosity with his time and feel privileged that we managed to record this episode together. The opportunistic nature of recording this episode does mean the sound quality isn't as good as we would normally produce, but I hope you can forgive us.
Neil is one of the best all-round athletes I've ever met, innately talented across a spectrum of sports, although it was Snow Boarding where he made his name as the sport began to grow. In this episode we chart Neil's career and what motivates him to constantly strive to be the very best version of himself. We also talk about longevity and the importance of putting the work in on yourself to maintain performance and health, and this links to one of Neil's more recent passions, Yoga and the benefits he has found in this ancient practice. This is an episode that Kenton has wanted to record for a long time and we don't think it disappoints!
Alastair Humphreys is an adventurer and author. In the past, he has embarked on huge adventures, such as cycling around the world and rowing the Atlantic, but he has found a new passion in micro-adventures and challenges closer to home. In this classic 'cool conversation', Al tells Kenton about walking across Spain and busking with a violin, sleeping on his local hill, and most recently exploring every inch of his local Ordnance Survey map over the course of a year. Al is an eccentric adventurer and this is a fascinating conversation.
Artistic director and CEO of The Barn Theatre in Cirencester, Iwan has established himself as a leading light of regional theatre. Growing up in West Wales, it was all about rugby, but an epiphany took him down a different path and into West End Theatre. The Barn is considered one of the very best of the UK's regional theatres, and talking to Iwan we gain a glimpse into why. In this episode, Iwan shares his deep knowledge of leadership and the importance of operating with passion as he talks about the modern face of British Theatre.
Steve McClure The mild-mannered janitor of British Climbing is really a full-blown Jedi. Steve has been at the very top of world climbing since his first ascent of 'Mutation' back in 1998, which may have been the hardest climb in the world at the time. Since then, this climbing CV is a catalogue of mind-boggling hard grades, both on sport and hard (dangerous) trad routes. In this episode, Steve explains how he uses his engineers brain to help squeeze the most from his own climbing as well as why climbing is possibly the most inclusive sport in the world. How do you balance the work/life conundrum? Now add the extra dimension of being an acclaimed ultra-runner and the training that is required to be competitive.... Rob appears to have found the sweet spot as well as being confident to move his family overseas for a prolonged period of time in order to educate the children beyond the normal, as well as to win all the local ultra-races as the unknown Brit. This episode, recorded outside (in the rain) at Rob's beautiful home in the Cotswolds (while he looks after two of his children), typifies his passion and lust for life.
Kenton teams up with his long-time friend Neil Brodie and together they embark on a multi-pitch rock climb which pushes them both (especially Kenton) to the limit. Situated in the stunning Aravis Alps the boys decide to take on a climb on the little frequented cliff above Le Sappey. What (on paper) should have been a mellow day out turns into a much more intense rollercoaster-like experience which Kenton has attempted to record as the day unfolds.
Two world titles and Olympic medals don't necessarily set you up for what comes next. Following the London 2012 Olympics Alex stepped away from the sport that had defined him. He then spent time carving a ‘successful' path in the city, only to find that his life lacked the purpose that he needed to live in a wholesome way. After years of trying to find a substitute for what elite sport gave, Alex found that even the sport he loved was masking a much more deeply rooted issue. In a brutally honest conversation of self-reflection and the search of one's own identity, Alex gives an insight into how we can go some way to helping ourselves and those close to us. There can be no doubt that the Matterhorn is the most iconic mountain in the world. It dominates the view from the Swiss village of Zermatt becoming a focus for Victorian era mountaineers vying for the first ascent. Today over 150 years later it still represents a challenge for the ambitious Alpine climber. In this world of commercialism most people employ the help of a professional mountain guide but so did Edward Whymper on the first ascent back in 1865. In this episode my friend and client Richard Williams and I talk about our own recent ascent of the mountain, how we approached it and what learnings do we take away for next time. If you are interested in Alpine climbing, or even simply the outdoors this is compelling listening. In this episode I venture into the world of sports and personal training with Matt Mullan, the erstwhile professional rugby player turned personal trainer extraordinaire. Nestled in the heart of the scenic Cotswolds, Matt's gym, Front Row Fitness, is where dreams meet reality. From his early career on the field, tackling formidable opponents with Worcester, Wasps, and England, to his current avatar as a life-changer, Matt has always been an epitome of drive and determination. He has an innate ability to enable his clients to set, pursue, and achieve their personal goals, and it's no surprise he's become one of the most sought-after trainers in the country. As we sit down amidst the bustle of his gym, we attempt to understand the intricate tapestry of Matt's journey - the challenges of being a professional sportsman, the transition to fitness coaching, and the many ways he has seized control of his own destiny through self-investment. This conversation with Matt was truly invigorating - come join us on this exploration of ambition, resilience, and the indomitable human spirit. - Sponsors - @lasportivauk @petzl_official @Arcteryxuk @landrover @lyonequipment @crudecoffeeroasters @evileye.eyewear @reality.maps @incoolcompany @bremontwatches @scallop.offical ... - Supporters - @panorama_lodge_namche @mission.uk @thecoolconversations @vidrate @Everesttoday #kentoncool #coolconversations #podcast #podcastersofinstagram #getitdone #wereinittogether #adventure #adventures #mountain #mountains #mountaineer #mountaineers #nepal #visitbhutan
