In this conversation with Helen Rennard we hear about her Winter Munro round of last winter in which she completed all 282 Munros in 80 days, beating the previous record of 83 days shared by Martin Moran (1985) and Anna Wells (2024).Helen talks about her formative days in a local Staffordshire hill walking club, before her progression to many years of hard Scottish winter climbing. She has held the female winter Tranter's round record in the past, as well as completing many winter climbing first ascents and hard repeat ascents around Scotland. We talk about motivations, logistics, weather conditions, and some of the factors that made Helen take a very ‘under the radar' approach to her round. In 2005, Lorraine McCall left her house to 'go for a walk' on her 40th birthday and didn't stop until she had walked up, and between, all 284 Munros in Scotland (2 Munros have since been downgraded, so there are now officially only 282!) This was a journey of 1,500 miles on foot. Ten years later, Lorraine tackled all 222 Corbetts to celebrate her 50th birthday, and most recently, Lorraine became the first woman to summit all 231 Grahams in a single push in 2024 (she's about to turn 60!) We think you will agree that Lorraine is Kenton's most under-stated, humble, unassuming guest so far. She has walked, cycled and kayaked thousands of miles across Scotland purely for the love of it. She shuns technology and her footprint on social media is tiny. In this episode we learn all about the classification of hills in Scotland and the challenges of getting up some of them, but mostly we come away with an appreciation for Lorraine who found her chosen adventures and embraced them wholeheartedly, overcoming the difficulties and continually finding joy in them. In this episode I sit down with Alice Tirbooman to talk about her journey from aerial circus and climbing in Bristol, to solo Scottish long distance running. We share tales of the remote and unsung Mullardoch Round, a 50km circuit of 12 Munros north of Glen Affric, which Alice ran solo and unsupported in 2022 and 2023. She then contrasts this with her racing experiences which range from the London Marathon, to the Glencoe Skyline and Jura Fell Race. We talk about Alice's solo traverse of the Cuillin Ridge, which combined her running and climbing skills in a rewarding challenge which was made all the more valuable by an unexpected twist, when her climbing partner had to pull out during the approach walk. Initially nervous about continuing alone, Alice found her flow and with this a deeper confidence in her own abilities and strengths. Alice's father is from Mauritius and her mother from the West Country. She talks about the lack of racial diversity in hill running, and the potential lack of role models in the sport for minority ethnic runners. Alice is a member of Westerlands Running Club and has found the running community to be a welcoming and inclusive place. She talks about possible ways to enhance representation within the sport, and the benefits of promoting running to a wider and more diverse audience. * I state that ‘no-one owns the mountains'. More accurately I mean no one ‘should' own the mountains; that the right to roam them (responsibly) should be for all.

Mountaineers and hikers from across the UK and beyond have flocked to Scotland to take on the Munros – Scottish peaks more than 3,000 feet high – ever since the list of such mountains was created by Sir Hugh Munro in 1891. The National Trust for Scotland cares for 46 of these Munros, including Ben Lomond, Ben Lawers, Ben Macdui and Torridon's Spidean a'Choire Léith. Jackie Bird sits down with Andrew Dempster, author of The Munros: A History, to trace the ever-increasing popularity of Munro bagging.  Who was the first to complete all 282 peaks? In one of my favourite episodes so far, I chat to Kevin Woods about his Winter Munro Round in which he completed all 282 Munros over the brutal winter of 2019/20. Delving into logistics and preparation for the Winter Munro Round gives a glimpse of Kev's incredible depth of mountain experience, having previously completed 4 (non continuous) rounds of the Munros. As an example of his meticulous planning, he carefully compiled a database of winter weather patterns over multiple winters, which he used to aid his decision making over the winter Munros project - in a winter season of relentless stormy weather. As if the continuous westerly storm cycles weren't enough, March 2020 brought with it new and unexpected challenges of a very different kind. Kev's recent Arrochar Round takes in all the Munros (4) and Corbetts (7) of the Arrochar hills, in a rugged 52km loop with around 6000m of ascent. Kev laid down a time of 13h54m for this round in his local hills, which could well become a connoisseur's classic. Our wide ranging conversation touches on many aspects of mountain culture including connection to place, historic depopulation of the land, changing land use and the intertwined history of the mountains with the people who live on and near them. Kev hails from Glasgow and takes us through his earlier mountain memories, which then led into climbing and longer linkups. From his beginnings its clear that creativity and the artist's aesthetic are large drivers for Kev - be that in his music, his media work or his many hills days themselves. In the course of working on a film about Sir Hugh Munro for the Munro Society, Kev has delved into stories from a bygone era, and through this has discovered a deeper understanding of the Scottish hills, not just as "cathedrals of our sport" but as places steeped in and changed by human history - from the Clearances to early map making, from Victorian attitudes to adventure and Land Access right through to modern pressures on the land. He also talks us through some of the climbing guidebooks he has been working on, previous adventures such as the filming of Dave Macleod's "24/8", and other projects, including an upcoming book on Winter 282.

Devised by Robin - himself a local of Lochcarron - he completed the 86km round in August 2022 and named it in memory of mountaineering legend Martin Moran, the local guide who sadly perished in the Indian Himalayas in 2019. Robin had been inspired since his youth by Martin's many achievements, which include the first continuous traverse of the Alpine 4000m peaks (Alps 4000, in 1994) and the first completion of the Munros in a single winter journey (1985), the Cuillin Ridge Traverse record, and many winter climbing first ascents in the North West and elsewhere.  Robin's love for his local hills shines throughout the conversation. He chose to include 9 Munros and 6 Corbetts of Torridon, giving a wild and rough route with almost 9000m of ascent. He set a time of 20h51m47s. Aside from this round he has also completed the Celtman Ironman three times, as well as the Glencoe Skyline and many cycling races.  Robin's Martin Moran Round raised funds for the Martin Moran Foundation, which was set up in Martin's memory to continue the work of passing on mountain skills to young people. They provide mountain skills courses for young people aged 16-18yrs who are passionate about the outdoors but don't otherwise have the support or resources to access mountain adventure. www.martinmoranfoundation.co.uk

> Find galleries, blog posts and many more episodes at www.mountainairpodcast.ukEpisode 2#06 welcomes a man that may be the most prolific hillwalker in history. That's because Rob Woodall has spent the past 40 years systematically completing every list of peaks, tops, prominences and trig points in existence. Putting to one side the popular lifetime achievements of the Munros, the Corbetts, the Wainwrights and such; he's summited all 1,556 “Marilyns” (UK peaks with a relative prominence of 150m), touched at least 6,190 trig points, and even stood atop all 2,271 “TuMPs” on the Welsh mainland (a deeply esoteric list of raised ground with Thirty and Upward Metre Prominences). Since recently semi-retiring his ambitions have even turned to the list of global “Ultra” peaks, which are those with a topographic prominence of 1,500m. There are 119 in Europe (not including the Matterhorn or the Eiger whose high cols preclude them), none in Britain (poor Ben Nevis), and so far at least 1,515 have been identified across the world. Nobody has come close to completing this list, and Rob doesn't believe they are “realistically completable by anybody”. But he's still quietly ticking them off.His achievements haven't gone unnoticed, and it's likely that you will have read about him in the outdoor press… but so many questions remain: How has he achieved such incredible hillbagging feats whilst being based in the lowland city of Peterborough? Has his lifelong career in civil engineering given him the map-savvy skills to achieve his goals? How does he endure so much driving? What kit does he wear when he's out in the hills? Is there any moment of his spare time that isn't spent hunting down summits? How do you access a sea stack? Can microspikes keep you from slipping on guano? Is he aware of quite how bonkers the whole thing seems to those outside the hobby?Listen, enjoy, tell your friends, subscribe to the podcast if you get and chance, and thank UKHillwalking.com for their kind support of this series![episode recorded on 18/11/21]Note: as there were a number of months in-between recording and publication, the ever-thorough Rob would like to point out that…The newly created North Northants unitary authority's top is a new hill! Nicola Hardy worked in IT in South Yorkshire for a decade before diving into freelance life as an adventurer and outdoor writer in 2019. She began by climbing all 282 of Scotland's Munros and - after her plans to hike 3000km in New Zealand were scuppered by Covid - she continued adventuring closer to home.    In 2020 she walked 330km from her birthplace in Sheffield to her new home in Cockermouth, Cumbria, journeying on foot across three national parks; and in 2021 she climbed all 214 Wainwrights in the Lake District over seven long weekends, a quirky book-by-book peak-bagging adventure.   Nic in her own words:   “I'm basically half IT organised spreadsheet nerd and half outdoor adventure loving hiker. I've taken a series of steps over the last 5 years to make my life as outdoorsy and adventurous as possible. I quit my job and sold my house in April 2019 and had 6 months of Scottish hill walking adventure, since then I've dabbled in route writing, gear reviewing, festival speaking, outdoor magazine/website writing whilst spending as much time outdoors around all that as I can.    I also now work a 2-day a week job to keep regular income coming in whilst doing my freelance work and adventuring around that. The Lake District's Kim Collison chats about his 24hr Munro Record set in July this year. Kim is no stranger to long distance running records - he holds records for the Paddy Buckley Round, Winter Bob Graham Round and Lakeland 24-hr Peaks. The 24hr Munro Round is simple on paper: how many different Munros can you tag in 24hrs, starting and finishing at the same point? In practice of course it is a gruelling physical, mental and logistical challenge. Kim's round took in 33 Munros in the Cairngorms/Glenshee region in 23hrs 48mins, over 160km with 9000m of ascent. This bettered the record of 32 Munros set by Sasha Chepelin in 2020.  Record News article: www.fionaoutdoors.co.uk/2021/07/new-record-33-munros-in-24-hours-for-kim-collison.html History of the 24hr Munro Record: www.gofar.org.uk/twenty-four-hour-munro-record Kim's website: kimcollison.co.uk/

What do you do when your sporting career, which has been your life since you were nine years old, comes to an end? For my guest Jamie Neill, the answer was to put on a pair of hiking boots. Jamie was a professional badminton player travelling the world and playing for Scotland in the World Championships. But when his playing career had to stop, he swapped the indoor courts for the outdoors and he hasn't looked back. He's now summited over 200 Munros, climbing 40 of them in just one week; hiked the West Highland Way and summited the three highest peaks in North Africa. He also joined a walking group which led to him meeting his partner Nikki and starting a family. Getting outside has truly helped Jamie's mental and physical transition from a sport that so dominated his life. Jamie and I met 18 months ago on a group walk on Blencathra in the Lake District. He started telling me about his story then, and I've wanted to get him on the podcast ever since! The Outdoors Fix is a podcast produced and hosted by Liv Bolton @liv_outsideuk This episode of The Outdoors Fix was supported by outdoor footwear brand Merrell. Merrell is launching a year-long campaign called #StepFurther to encourage people from all walks of life to get outdoors on a micro-adventure to experience the benefits for both their physical and mental health. He completed all 282 Munros by running, biking and kayaking between them, starting on Ben More on Mull and finishing atop Ben Hope in the Far North. This improved on Stephen Pyke's 2010 record of 39 days, 9 hours and 6 minutes which itself knocked a significant chunk off the previous record before it. I talk to Donnie and Stephen (Spyke) about all things Munro Round on a Zoom call for the Fort William Mountain Festival. In this episode I speak to Roger Wild - my father - about (some of) the history of ski touring in Scotland before moving on to describe our 2010 'Scottish Haute Route'. This 7 day journey from Ben Nevis to Gairnshiel near Ballater was around 155km in length with 10,000m of ascent. We pre-placed food caches, stayed in bothies, and skied on Nordic free-heel skis carrying our overnight gear with us. The route linked up the high ground through Lochaber to the Cairngorms, ascending numerous Munros and Corbetts along the way. Roger is a retired British Mountain Guide and a former Royal Marines Commando. Notes: 1. We talk about grip wax which goes on the ski under your foot on nordic skis to allow grip when that foot is weighted - not to be confused with the wax used to improve glide on downhill skis (and tips/tails of nordic skis) 2. Dr Adam Watson (1930-2019) was 85 when we met him near Banchory in 2016 3. For some reason I said I was a student in Aberdeen in 2010 - I'm not that young and was in fact a junior doctor then 4. We mention skimo race skis a lot but don't acknowledge that of course modern standard touring setups have gotten way lighter too - most people seem to like something in the ‘light standard‘ range rather than full race skis - which are harder to ski in some conditions, less stable, more expensive and less durable. For long journeys obviously low weight is key.

Shinty is unique to Scotland and one of the oldest games in the world. The game is similar to games such as hockey and lacrosse in some aspects and has historical roots with golf and ice hockey. As with lacrosse the game is a fast moving aerial game where physical fitness is tested to the limits. However, different from both hockey and lacrosse as in Shinty, feet can be used to stop the ball but not the hands (unless you are the goal-keeper). You can carry the ball on your caman (which is the stick used in the game) which can be also be swung above shoulder height.....a skilful eye and a sense of survival are paramount!! However, Donnie’s greatest passion now is running which he has gone on to excel in. Donnie has set an astonishing new Munros record to finish all 282 mountains over 3000ft (914.4m) in Scotland in 31 days, 23 hours and two minutes. Munros are all the mountains over 3000ft (914.4m). Today's edition of The Aid Station takes a distinctly off-road route as we head to Paisley just outside of Glasgow, Scotland to meet John Kynaston, host of the Run to the Hills podcast. A wonderful story of a man with strong Christian roots whose journey includes working in Bangladesh and India during which time his four daughters, including twins, were born. John's return to the UK saw him work as a pastor and 10 years ago joining Glasgow City Council as an Active Schools Co-ordinator. Another example of the wonderful impact of sport and activity on the lives of kids with some of the stories of transformation during COVID-19. Watch the screen light up as John shares his passion for trail running which lead him to writing a blog and more recently taking over the Run to the Hills podcast. Listen to his insights into the impact of the Pandemic on the trail running calendar in the UK and an interesting case study on the often asked question of "to rest or not to rest in between races" When it comes to inspiration, hear the amazing story of Donnie Campbell who ran for 32 days to beat a 10 year old record of running up all of the 282 Munros (mountains over 3,000ft) by 7days. https://youtu.be/H__oQubRbZw Listen to my chat with John here https://youtu.be/UzmxzAqWooY #theaidstation

Kevin Woods is no stranger to the hills and mountains. He’s fresh back from covering all 282 Munros in just 97 days, straight through the Scottish winter and as the Covid crisis spread like wildfire across the world. This was his fourth round of Munros, and he’s not yet 30. (If you’re not from these parts, Munros are mountains in Scotland over 3,000 feet high, some situated in deeply remote terrain). Kevin is a winter mountain leader and a true man of the mountains. He’s also a talented filmmaker and musician, and guides folk around mountain routes across Scotland when he’s not pursuing his own hardy ambitions in the hills. He’s an all-round open guy, his climbing led by a true and authentic love of these mountain environments rather than an ego-led pursuit of records. When we spoke, he was already planning his return to the hills after lockdown, just a few months after completing his fourth round. We got into a deep dive on what his intense three months in the mountains was like – the suffering, the joys, the solitude and the daily stresses and questioning as Covid hit. Kevin also gives his insight into the planning and logistics of a non-stop winter round; the brutality of the north west highland storms he fought through; the days he feared might be dealbreakers; his start in mountain leading; and his attitude to risk-taking and safety. Watch this space for the film Kevin is producing about his winter adventure!

A couple from the United Kingdom is growing trees into furniture that does not need any carpentry. Gavin /ˈgæv ɪn/ and Alice Munro from Derbyshire /ˈdɜr biˌʃɪər/, England, are training trees to take the shape of furniture pieces. The Munros make their furniture by growing young tree branches over specially made frames. Currently, they have frames for chairs, tables, and lamps. Once the branches grow into the shape, they are nurtured until they mature. Then, the resulting piece of furniture is harvested and dried. The whole process usually takes four to nine years on average, depending on the type of furniture. Because of the complex process, the couple's creations are sold from around $1,120 to $15,600. Gavin's childhood experiences inspired him to create furniture this way. The concept of furniture that does not need to be built first came to him when he saw a bonsai tree that looked like a chair. On the other hand, the idea of shaping tree branches with special frames was inspired by his experience growing up with a curved spine. He had to wear a metal frame to help straighten his back, similar to how he shapes tree branches with frames. He first started experimenting with the idea in 2006. Then, six years later, Gavin founded the company Full Grown with his wife, seeing it as a solution to the non-eco-friendly process of cutting down trees and manufacturing them to create furniture. The couple's long-term goal is to buy a farm where they can hold experiments. They also want to start a consultancy service and share their knowledge of creating unique furniture.

A California native living in the west of Scotland, Jamie has a string of adventures and running achievements behind her, and a few more in the pipeline this year. In 2015, she won the 95-mile West Highland Way and last year she set a course record on the 55-mile Cateran Trail. In 2013, she hiked, skied or snowshoed all 282 of Scotland’s Munros in a single year. She has tackled some monster endurance races and last year developed a rare condition called rhabdomyalysis during a multi-day event, which brought her close to kidney failure and landed her in an Italian hospital for a week. She is inspiring for sure, but it’s not all about races and results for her, her love for the outdoors shines through in everything she does and she has a refreshing approach to training and competing. In this episode we talk about what it took for Jamie and her partner Andy Taylor to successfully achieve climbing the Munros in a year whilst holding down full time jobs; the struggle involved in taking on such a demanding project as a couple; and the raw realities of her date with rhabdo. Andy joins us too, to give his perspective on the year of Munros.

Drums of Autumn Chapters 3-5 Week 3 Summary: Brianna takes an unexpected early morning call. Roger plans a visit. Brianna sends confusing signals. There's a sweet airport reunion. After his week-long conference, off to the Scottish festival they go. Brianna struggles with the past, grief, and healing. A kilted Roger performs to an appreciative crowd. Brianna's wounds are exposed. Roger passes Uncle Joe's assessment. The Apollo 11 mission prevails. “Yeah, it's like that,” for the both of them.  Inside the Chapters: Chapter 3 - The Minister's Cat - Boston, June 1969 Roger calls Brianna from Scotland and gets the time difference wrong. She is dead asleep and wakes with a humorous start. They haven't seen each other in some time, and Roger is nervous and unsure of her because she hasn't answered his letter. There's a conference he can attend the following month, and does she want to see him? He nervously talks, worrying she'll reject him. They speak over each other. Of course, she wants to see him. He laughs as their words collide once more. He understands her now, warming her through. She acknowledges he's the only other person who can understand her. She'd been dreaming about Jamie when he called her. She was trying to catch up to him while they hiked in the mountains. She'd used to do that with Frank. Roger brings up bagging Munros* in Scotland and explains the hobby of hiking mountains over 3000 feet. His laugh brings the memory of his parting kiss last upon her lips. Roger and Brianna like to play games with each other. She guessed he was in Inverness, Scotland and not in England because his accent was thicker when there. He playfully rolled his r's for her (DOA, p66, Nook). She wished he was there now. Bree admitting wanting him catches Roger off guard. She tries to explain why she didn't write, but he says there'll be time to discuss it when he's there in a month. He's happy she said he could visit. She's happy remembering her hand upon his chest.  Now sleepless, she goes to the kitchen for a glass of milk. While peering into the refrigerator, the contents become the standing stones in her mind's eye. She shivers. She knows why she didn't write, yet she has no idea how to explain it to Roger. He was part of the devastation and loss of learning about Jamie Fraser and her mother leaving. Though her mother wasn't dead, there was nothing to do but grieve the loss. She was utterly lonely without her mother. Brianna's Catholic upbringing shows as she hears an ambulance and crosses herself. She says a small prayer for those who need it. She also prays daily for her mother and father. Even though Uncle Joe Abernathy knew everything that happened, only Roger could hear the stones too. The experience had marked them after Claire had gone. She needed to heal and rebuild her life, away from Scotland and stone circles. When Roger was present, she couldn't forget any of it, not even for a moment. Had he cared and protected her only because her mother had asked him too? She doesn't want a future based on crushing obligation. Was she presumptuous he wanted a future with her? She thinks if she left and came back again to him, they could do it right at their choosing. If they were to take the relationship further, it would need to be their choice. Bree sits down to her mathematics work, soothing and controlled (DOA, p.69, Nook). Like in Voyager we see the image of a spider weaving. Above all, she was glad she'd said yes to his visit. The following month she's at the airport with her friend Gayle to pick Roger up. Gayle sounds vapid and unworldly, but able to fill conversational spaces. She thinks England and Scotland are the same. Brianna clears up the misconception of England versus the United Kingdom and Scotland. Nosy Gayle wants to know if Bree and Roger have had sex yet. Bree is aghast at the question but tells her no. At this moment, Roger appears. Gayle is impressed by him, while Bree stiffens at the sight (DOA, p70, Nook). He does sound a bit like a pirate, doesn't he? Bree's body reacts at the sight of him; perhaps it wasn't a good idea to have him come after all. He sees her and lights the room; she runs to him without thinking. He meets her halfway, nearly picking her up from the ground and squeezing her hard. Can you hear the music playing in the background? I do. It's funny how Brianna thinks she hasn't already chosen him. He kisses her. She doesn't want his whisky flavored lips to stop. Breathlessly, they stop. Gayle breaks into the reunion scene (DOA, p.71, Nook). Gayle fauns over Roger's accent. Brianna finally remembers to introduce her friend. Roger plays along rolling his r's in a most undignified fashion. Bree is not amused. He explains that in addition to the conference; he's playing at a Scottish Festival to earn money while he's in town (DOA, p.71, Nook). He sometimes does Scottish folk singing at ceilidhs* and highland games*. Funny that Gayle knows about kilts, but is unaware Scotland is a separate country. Bree is once again not amused. Gayle remarks about the big box, it's Roger's bodhran*, a Scottish drum. She also offers to drive Roger to the festival, which Bree quashes. Gayle again presses her about them having sex and thinks Bree is crazy if she doesn't. It's 1969. I think young adults have always been the same, no matter what outward social mores would say. As Brianna drives Roger to the Scottish Festival, they play The Minister's Cat*. Roger says it's a Scottish game, but it's a Victorian parlor game. They play for a while (DOA, p.73, Nook). These two are a brainy and vocabulary laden duo. They reach the turn for the festival; Roger is apologetic at how far it is from Boston. Brianna says it isn't far. She scoffs at the 150-mile drive (DOA, p.73, Nook). The conversation takes a turn while using The Minister's Cat as a conversational pathway. She becomes aloof and thoughtful. Roger decides tea is the answer, but Bree hates tea. She's no English woman indeed. Roger reflects upon Brianna. She looks like her heritage but seems MORE.  She begins to explain what she's thinking. Roger is thinking of all the ways he likes her. She tells him how great he was after her mother left and wanted to know if he's been back to Craigh na Dun. He hasn't been back. Is he scared of it (DOA, p.75, Nook)? She points out how much he helped regardless of being scared. She tells him though she's not spoken of her parents in half a year, she can't be around him without talking about her parents immediately. She blushes (like Jamie) when she talks to him. She also says, she had a crush on him and didn't know he was just nice to her for her mother. He assures her he wasn't just nice. She wasn't sure what to do (DOA, p.75, Nook). He kisses her after asking permission. Always a gentleman. He's a combo of Frank and Jamie. After parking, Roger suddenly realizes where he brought her and is horrified. A Scottish festival with all the trappings would remind her of Jamie. Chapter 4 – A Blast from the Past Roger finds the dressing area to be luxurious in comparison to what he's used to in Scotland. This leads him to husband thinking. Would he be financially able to equal the level of comfort Brianna is used to? She is driving a brand-new Mustang. In 1969, that vehicle MSRP was from $2740-4798 for the various models. The average American made $5900 in 1969. It was a pricey car. He is not stupid for wondering what income level she expected. He also had an envelope for her. He's hesitant to give it to her based on their earlier conversation and her reaction to seeing the 78th Fraser Highlanders'* pipe-band in the flesh, made him worry about her. Incidentally, the 78th Fraser Highlanders' pipe-band did not come into existence until 1982. Diana's timey-wimey writing! The Fraser motto* is Je suis prest! (I am ready!). He's worried about her as he's getting ready for two performances and mulling over what he'll do based on the audience. He's donning his kilt while she is off entertaining herself. He decides to go full Scots in his kilt and eschews the underwear (DOA, p.78, Nook). On his way out, he asked for luck from his father. The appearance of him made Brianna sit up and take notice. Her mother was right about a man in a kilt. It makes them sexy indeed. She asks him if he's hungry and goes over the available food options (DOA, p.79, Nook). He's sorry for bringing her since it's been such a shock, but she's okay with it. She thinks the festival is so Scottish. Roger decides it is, “the Scots' age-old talent for survival-the ability to adapt to anything and make a profit from it.” He hugs her, noticing she smells like fresh grass. Claire smells like herbs and green things when Jamie hugs her. He points out she's Scots too, but she doesn't want to eat haggis*. Roger thinks the food vendors are quite unusual. Apparently, the festival changes and the vendors stay the same. The vendor asks about his kilt to a bland-faced response (DOA, p.80, Nook). Brianna gives her version of an over the top Scottish accent. They look around at all the merchandise. Brianna asks why he's using MacKenzie*. He explains Wakefield is his adopted father's name; his family name is MacKenzie. Roger Jeremiah MacKenzie is his given name. Jerry was his father. His nickname was Jemmy when he was young. He explains why Jeremiah was the best family name to choose from (DOA, p.81, Nook). Their conversation veers to Claire explaining sex in Brianna's health courses in school. Yes, one can get pregnant the first time or while having sex only once. She explains to Roger the word health is a euphemism for sex in America. Roger is thankful his sporran is holding down the kilt fort with this frank conversation. She backwardly asks if he's had sex and a steady girlfriend (DOA, p.83, Nook). She's no steady boyfriend. He kisses her fingers. Roger don't be a too shy man. It was time for him to perform, he hands her the envelope. His voice is lovely, to her and the crowd. He's very good. He sings a variety of songs from the always popular choices to those of war. The song about Prestonpans, ”Hey Johnnie Cope"* struck Bree as she realizes her mother and Jamie were both at that battle. She had an epiphany about herself and Roger (DOA, p.85, Nook). Roger shifted from the music of the '45 with a piece from 1715 rising*. Brianna took this as her opportunity to open the envelope. It's pictures of Claire and Frank happily married. It's their wedding day. Roger is singing another Jacobite piece as she discovers the details of these wedding photos. Roger's set ends with “The Bonnie Banks o'Loch Lomond*,” Brianna is overtaken with emotion looking at her mother so sure and happy on her wedding day to Frank.  This is one of the issues she has loving Roger. What if she changes her mind? What if she finds someone else like her mother did? A bit later without discussing her departure from his performance, he needs to leave her for a bit during the calling of the clans*. This is where all the clans present are called and accounted for. They wandered the festival spending the afternoon together. Pay attention to the description of the people and families at this festival for the later gathering in the book. As the Clans were called during the torchlight ceremony, Brianna pondered the existence of clans today (DOA, p.89, Nook). Chapter 5 – Two Hundred Years from Yesterday Snapped back into reality, it's Roger's final day in Boston. The moon landing is anticipated as several people gather at Joe Abernathy's house. Uncle Joe is frustrated over the TV not working, so he asks Bree to figure it out after she introduces, the boyfriend, Roger to him. Joe and Roger have a chat over some Lagavulin* whisky Claire gifted him with before she left. Joe jumps right in since Claire and Frank are both gone. He wants to know what Roger's intentions are (DOA, p.92, Nook). Thankfully the television interrupts for a moment before Joe dives in for more (DOA, p.93, Nook). Ultimately he sees Roger is in love with Brianna, that it isn't a fling to him. “It's like that.” They all anxiously await the Apollo 11* landing. Bree is pressed against Roger. In the safety of people, they can have close contact. Roger thinks of the drive back from the festival, their conversation, the long drive back with Roger at the wheel, and unable to figure the way back to her apartment, took her to his hotel room, where he inhabited the floor. When dawn broke, he sat in the chair wrapped in her sweater, the scent about him. He simply watched her sleep. “Yeah, it was like that.” Apollo 11 landed, the rest of the room gripped by the television. “It was a fine day to be an American.” Roger felt it was two hundred years from where they were yesterday at the festival (DOA, p.95, Nook). Shirley wakes to talk about her plans for the day, which seems to involve food more than Munros! However she start from Ryvoan Bothy via Bynack More and finally arrives at the Hutchinson Memorial Hut. Here she meets Caburn Chamberlain and begins to interrogate him about his trip so far and, once again, food! Caburn doesn't do dehydrated food, and the contents of his rucksack always leaves people salivating and watching in awe as delightful things appear at meal times! Then she starts to think about Braemar and her route into town which involves visiting all the cafes on the way to the Fife Arms and eating each menu speciality in the process. Andy wakes up at the fantastic Braemar Campsite and chats with first timer John Garner who has been slightly ahead of most walkers, but enjoying his trip all the same. He also has chance to have an in depth chat with Henry Shires from the US, about his trip and the range of lightweight shelters which he designs. In the Fife Arms Andy chats to first timer Louise Ward and someone who really was serious about coming to Scotland, Michael Firkins all the way from Australia. Finally Paul Mason discusses the magical repairing abilities of his new lightweight accessory, Gaffer Tape!
