I have looked at this everyday since I took it and cant believe I've been running OCR for barely 9 months, hit that podium in 6 months, and I've podiumed in my last 4 out of 5 races. Everyone of those medals represents another goal I achieved in finishing that race. It also is a symbol of how hard I've work on myself to stay off Alcohol....its been 13 months since I stopped drinking. I believe OCR has helped me with that like no other factor other then myself. Thanks to PATH Projects for sponsoring this episode! Visit pathprojects.com "The World's Toughest Race" - probably is! After a 17 year absence, Bear Grylls brings back Eco-Challenge on steroids, with a massive budget and plenty of stories, all on a bigger and badder course. The 417 miles on Fiji, included all kinds of paddling, trekking, biking, ropes, and wading through hypothermia-inducing cold water; the 66 teams were given 11 days to finish, and for 22 teams, that wasn't enough. The 10-part series on Amazon Prime is definitely worth watching. Danelle and Rea were there. Both outstanding athletes, they provide us with great insights on E-C as they participated at opposite ends of the spectrum. Danelle (Podcast #35) was on Team Endure, which garnered the most TV time of the entire show, as it featured her friends Mark Macy, who has done every single E-C and now has Alzheimer's disease, supported by his son and top racer Travis Macy. Rea (Podcast #75) was on Team Canada, which got no camera time, as the E-C staff had not heard of them. Which was a big mistake, as they also had Ryan Atkins (18 FKTs and Podcast #73), who like Rea is a top Obstacle Course Racer. They finished a strong second. Both have applied for E-C 2021, so stay tuned! Rea will stick with her team, and now that Mark has retired, Team Endure will add their former AR teammate Dave Mackey! Look out...

How Should I Train? This one is a loaded question if ever there was one! In this podcast I'm going to talk about one of the biggest divisions in fitness training... STRENGTH TRAINING vs. CARDIO …and which one YOU should be doing! Chances are you're firmly in one camp or the other. Chances are you have strong feelings backing up your stance. Chances are you've uttered one of the following phrases: “I don't want to LIFT WEIGHTS because it'll make me look bulky…I just want to be TONED!” OR “I don't want to do CARDIO because it'll BURN OFF all my muscle!" If either of these phrases sound familiar and/or strikes fear in your heart, then this podcast is for you! And Don't worry! I'm not here to bash either one. In fact, I absolutely LOVE both!! With a decades worth of experience in the fitness industry and competitive athletics... As an instructor at Barry's Bootcamp As a running coach at Equinox As a Spin & Pilates instructor at Coreology As a competitive distance runner and Obstacle Course Racer (100-150+ miles/week) As a high level strength competition/powerlifter capable of lifting 3x my own bodyweight (500 lbs deadlift) …I've been firmly on each side of the fence at different points in my life! In this two part series, I'm going to take a deep dive into how best to PHYSICALLY & MENTALLY train for your goals, hopefully putting your mind at ease and some of those fears to rest!

She was dominating the OCR scene and training for the Western States Endurance Run—a 100-mile race she describes as “the superbowl of ultramarathons—when she developed a stress fracture in her femur. That was challenging enough, but not long after recovering from that injury, Amelia had a second setback—a sacral stress fracture. In the end, she was sidelined from running for nearly a year, and didn't race for 18 months. Amelia joined us today to discuss: -How she's come to view her injuries as useful experiences and how they changed her relationship with running -The stages of grief she went through when she learned about her initial fracture, including denial, anger, and finally, acceptance -The loss of identity that occurred when she couldn't run, and how she coped -Why writing has been so important to her throughout the recovery process -How she overcame some internal resistance and began actively volunteering and participating in the community while injured: “staying involved in the sport and seeing other people's' joy and learning to hold that as my own” -Her resistance to the phrase “comeback,” and why she thinks it's important not to try to recreate the past -What it felt like to have a second serious diagnosis so soon after her return to running -The shame and “self-flagellation” that go along with overuse injuries, and how vulnerability has powered her through those difficult emotions -Why being upset about injury is really just a sign of how dedicated an athlete you are and how much you love your sport -The top pieces of advice she gives injured athletes, including giving yourself time to grieve, knowing when cross-training is detrimental instead of helpful, and being your own advocate with doctors and other health care providers   Resources/links we mention: -Amelia's blog =Her social media pages: Instagram and Twitter Thanks for listening, and please reach out anytime at hello@injuredathletesclub.com with questions, guest suggestions, or other feedback.
