Coincidences may seem like random occurrences to many of us – but not to a mathematician. Sarah Hart is professor of geometry at Gresham College and professor emerita of mathematics at Birkbeck, University of London. She joins host Krys Boyd to discuss why we so often look for coincidences in our lives — and why that's a mathematically futile endeavor — why the blind luck behind lottery wins might not be so blind after all, and why revealing this magic with numbers makes the phenomenon all the more interesting. Her article, “The surprising maths that explains why coincidences are so common,” was published in New Scientist.

Matt, and I are headed into the studio for a big recording session! Please, stay tuned but in the mean time, enjoy this Patreon Episode, In 2014, during a BLM peaceful protest, after the shooting death of Michael Brown, a picture went viral of a gorgeous 12 year old black child, named Devonte. He was wearing a sign that offered 'Free Hugs' and would be photographed in an embrace with a white police officer. People, would see it as a sign of hope, and just a beautiful photo. No one could have guessed the life that Devonte was actually living. He, along with 2 of his siblings, had been adopted by Jenn and Sarah Hart. Along with another 3 black children, who were siblings. And, the pain and suffering that all 6 children were going through, wouldn't be known, until it was too late. The child who was behind the photo dubbed "the hug felt around the world" was at the centre of a family, where 'love' was not something that was being received, despite how things looked from the outside looking in. In 2018, Jennifer and Sarah Hart drove off a cliff in California, killing themselves and their six adopted children. While much of the media attention focused on the two women, reporter Roxanna Asgarian set off to investigate what had happened to the children's birth families, and why they'd been removed from their care. In today's episode, Asgarian speaks with Here & Now's Deepa Fernandes about her book, We Were Once a Family, and the ways the foster care and child welfare system in the United States pushed the Hart siblings into an abusive and ultimately fatal situation. The idea of proof is fundamental to mathematics. We could argue that science consists of testable theories, and therefore that it is about what can be disproved, not what can be proved. In law, the test is “beyond reasonable doubt”.Famous conjectures in mathematics have been tested by computers for trillions of numbers – but we still call them conjectures. In this lecture we'll talk about what mathematicians mean by proof, and I'll show you some of my favourites. This lecture was recorded by Sarah Hart on 4th June 2024 at Barnard's Inn Hall, LondonThe transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website:https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/mathematician-proofGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. In this lecture I will show you some mathematical illusions: “proofs” that 1=0, that fractions don't exist, and more. There are curious and important implications behind what's going on.These “proofs” reveal some very common logical slips that can go unnoticed when we are trying to prove more plausible statements. And the stakes are high. As I'll show you, once you have “proved” one false claim, you can prove absolutely any statement at all. This lecture was recorded by Sarah Hart on 14th May 2024 at Barnard's Inn Hall, LondonThe transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website:https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/maths-illusionsGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. We regularly hear of amazing coincidences – people winning the lottery twice, or getting a phone call from a long-lost friend just when you were thinking about them. Is this telepathy? The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the sixth and final study session on Roxanna Asgarian's We Were Once A Family: A Story of Love, Death, & Child Removal in America. Gus has been asking listeners to locate the "love" in this narrative. Maybe you can help us locate the "family" in all this too. All of the murdered non-white children - including Devonte Hart - were abducted from the state of Texas. In the time we've been reading this book, the Texas Child Welfare system has been fined and charged with wanton neglect - including 49 children dying while in foster care over the past 4 years. Gus suspects most of those 49 fatalities were non-white children. Last week, we heard more details about Tammy Scheurich, the White biological mother of Hannah, Abigail and Markis. This drug addict, school drop out White Woman is presented with the Queen's English. The complete opposite of the incoherent Negro dialect of Dontay and Nathanial Davis that Asgarian highlights. As Gus suspected earlier, we're told Tammy's White family is Racist, but we're given no details about how they practice Racism. This week, readers found out that Jen & Sarah Hart made time to find a "no-kill animal shelter" for their hounds. While the pets survived, the 6 non-white children were poisoned before being driven off the cliff. White Mendocino County enforcement officials worked vigorously to avoid using the term "murder" when describing the carnage. They empathized with the murdering, White lesbians' family. #ThrowAwayBlackChildren #WhiteCronyism #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
Many puzzles have a long history, such as water pouring puzzles, where you need to measure (for example) one pint of water equipped only with an eight-pint and a five-pint jug. The mathematics behind the solution has many useful applications.Meanwhile, paradoxes such as: “some men shave themselves; those that do not shave themselves are shaved by the barber: who shaves the barber?” lead us to deep questions about set theory. We will discuss several examples and the related mathematics. This lecture was recorded by Sarah Hart on 30th January 2024 at Barnard's Inn Hall, LondonThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/maths-puzzlesGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 4th study session on Roxanna Asgarian's We Were A Family: A Story of Love, Death, & Child Removal in America. Gus has been asking listeners to locate the "love" in this narrative. Maybe you can help us pinpoint the "family" in all this too. We're nine chapters into Asgarian's narrative on the mass murder of 6 "adopted" black children by two lesbian White Women. Half of these children - including Devonte Hart - were abducted from the state of Texas. In the two weeks that we've been reading this book, the Texas Child Welfare system has been fined and charged with wanton neglect - including 49 children dying while in foster care over the past 4 years. Gus suspects most of those 49 fatalities were non-white children. Last week, we read the 7th chapter, titled: "Playing The Food Card." Gus noted that Asgarian fails to put this title in quotes, even though this is a critical response from Sarah Hart when Hannah's teacher reports that she's not been eating. 5 of the 6 non-white abducted children fell well below the growth levels for their age group when tested by doctors - evidence that they were severely malnourished. But the doctors reported nothing wrong. When neighbors and educators raised warnings and called child welfare, the White lesbian duo easily lied and thwarted all concern. They even ignored calls visits and calls from social service workers for weeks. Many readers noted that Asgarian follows paragraphs of appalling Racist abuse with lame excuses to rationalize why these White lesbians behaved like satanic slave masters. #FamilyAnnihilator #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the third study session on Roxanna Asgarian's We Were Once A Family: A Story of Love, Death, & Child Removal in America. Gus has been asking listeners to locate the "love" in this narrative. Maybe you can help us locate the "family" in all this too. We're six chapters into the disgraceful mass murder of 6 "adopted" non-white children by two lesbian White Women. Last week, Asgarian detailed the years of "controversy" surrounding "transracial adoption." The White author does not make it explicit that this term means: White people taking black children. Dorothy Roberts told us that the System of White Supremacy and child welfare has made it easy for White people to nab whatever discarded children they want - which mostly means a preference for White babies. We also read about the money the state of Texas makes from shipping foster children off to White parents across the US. When White parents like the murdering Harts get these children, they're generally is not high level oversight - if any. Years before these White Women killed 6 non-white children, they were repeatedly accused of abusing and starving children. Sarah Hart was actually convicted of child abuse in Minnesota, but faced no serious consequences. Educated at Oxford and Manchester, Dr. Hart is also the thirty-third Gresham Professor of Geometry, the first woman to hold the position since its inception in 1597. She is the author of Once Upon a Prime: The Wondrous Connections Between Mathematics and Literature. In this episode, we focus on Once Upon a Prime. We talk about the connection between mathematics and literature in several different dimensions, including the structure of literary texts; poetry, and rhyme schemes; plots and narrative choices in novels; numbers used in fiction; turns of phrase, metaphors, and allusions; mathematical themes, and stereotypes of mathematicians; and the idea of mathematics itself. Finally, we discuss the messages of the book. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, DANIEL FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Jennifer and Sarah Hart, a same-sex, white couple living in Minnesota adopted 6 black and mixed-race children from Texas. That would be a challenge for most people, but Jen and Sarah made it look easy. Jen's social media was full of beautiful pictures of their children in nature, political rallies, protests, and musical festivals. They seemed like the perfect modern family until reports of child abuse and neglect mounted and Child Protective Services (CPS) was called in 3 different states as the Harts moved to evade authorities. The tragic story ended on March 26, 2018, when Jen and Sarah decided to drive off a cliff in Northern California, forever affecting those who loved Markis, Hannah, Devonte, Jeremiah, Abigail, and Ciera so dearly.Support this podcast.Sources:https://news.yahoo.com/two-women-murdered-adopted-black-140003914.html https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-hart-family-timeline-20180404-story.htmlhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6N17FqridVE https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/hart-family-mystery-deepens-as-friends-remember-previous-foster-child-in-minnesota/https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/story-of-harts-foster-child-is-one-of-heartbreak-though-not-the-way-some-might-expect/https://www.investigationdiscovery.com/crimefeed/murder/hart-family-jennifer-hart-sarah-hart-devonte-hart-suv-crashhttps://www.startribune.com/years-of-abuse-allegations-gathered-on-oregon-parents-who-drove-over-ocean-cliff-with-kids/480720321/https://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/2018/04/hart_family_crash_oregon_relea.htmlhttps://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/2018/04/hart_family_deaths_show_--_aga.htmlhttps://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/2018/04/devonte_harts_biological_mom_t.htmlhttps://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2018/04/08/tourists-find-a-body-in-the-ocean-near-where-hart-familys-suv-plunged-off-a-cliff/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hart_family_murdershttps://time.com/5498137/hannah-hart-confirmed-dead-california-cliff-crash/?amp=truehttps://www.oregonlive.com/news/2010/01/cries_for_help_for_jeanette_ma.htmlhttps://www.washingtonpost.com/national/his-siblings-were-killed-by-their-adoptive-mother-he-was-left-in-foster-care-to-suffer-a-more-common-fate/2019/12/11/f54f793a-d654-11e9-9610-fb56c5522e1c_story.htmlhttps://www.texastribune.org/2023/03/14/texas-child-welfare-removal-hart-family-deaths/https://www.adn.com/nation-world/2018/07/14/as-children-begged-for-help-system-failed-them/https://www.oregonlive.com/news/g66l-2019/04/62ad88fc503462/hart-family-inquest-see-evidence-the-jury-viewed-before-concluding-mothers-planned-fatal-crash.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/We-Were-Once-Family-Removal-ebook/dp/B09Y4765CL/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2241MO98M9RMQ&keywords=we+were+once+a+family&qid=1698208991&sprefix=we+were+once+a+fa%2Caps%2C120&sr=8-1https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/01/200129104737.htm

Some crimes are much worse than others, and Episode 81 takes a look at the specific methods of murder known as familicide and family annihilation. First, Anna gives us a glimpse into the reasons why one may commit such a crime, and Benton tells the horrible tale of Jennifer and Sarah Hart's murder suicide. Then, Anna relays the story of Xavier Dupont, who disappeared after murdering his entire family. Finally, the two watch a classic episode of City Confidential, profiling the murders of the Defeo family in Amityville, New York. Our TV doc this week is Season 6: Episode 8 of City Confidential, "Horror in Amityville".
Kirsty Wark celebrates the artistry of numbers with three mathematicians Eugenia Cheng, Sarah Hart and Emily Howard. Eugenia Cheng asks Is Maths Real? in her new book, which offers a new way to look at the subject by focusing on the questions, rather than the answers. She explores how asking the simplest of questions – ‘why does 1 + 1 = 2?' – can get to the very heart of the search for mathematical truth. Sarah Hart wants to break down the perceived barriers between mathematics and the creative arts. In Once Upon a Prime: The Wondrous Connections Between Mathematics and Literature she reveals the geometry lurking in Moby-Dick, George Eliot's obsession with statistics, and Jurassic Park's fractal patterns. Emily Howard has a dual passion for maths and music. In her compositions she plays with mathematical shapes and processes. Her new record Torus, released on NMC Recordings in April, brings together works including sphere and Compass. Producer: Katy Hickman

When a young woman was found lying on her hearth rug, foaming at the mouth on New Years Day of 1845, few would have guessed that the winding path leading up to her death would result in a mystery that would become entwined with one of the key moments in the history of communication as well as one of the earliest cases of murder by Prussic Acid. In the long catalogue of Victorian poisonings, the case of Sarah Hart remains prominent not just because of its twists and turns, but equally because of its long reaching influences on the adoption of a device that would help to shape the modern world. Two white women, Jennifer and Sarah Hart, adopted six Black children. Later, they murdered the children by driving the entire family off a cliff. A new book explores not just the Hart family, but the conditions that allowed for their adoptions to go through despite allegations of abuse. It also tells the stories of the birth families of these children, and how they lost custody despite all efforts to keep their kids. Journalist and author Roxanna Asgarian joins us to discuss her book We Were Once A Family: A Story of Love, Death, and Child Removal in America.
In 2018, six children — Ciera, Abigail, Jeremiah, Devonte, Hannah and Markis — were murdered by their adoptive parents, Jennifer and Sarah Hart, who also committed suicide when they drove their family off of a cliff in Mendocino. The Harts were white; their adopted children were Black and mixed race. Much of the news coverage focused on the Harts, their motivations and history. But a new book by journalist Roxanna Asgarian traces the murdered children's stories through the perspectives of their birth families. We'll hear those stories along with the failures of the foster and adoptive systems they expose from Asgarian, whose book is titled “We Were Once a Family: A Story of Love, Death, and Child Removal in America.” Guests: Roxanna Asgarian, law and courts reporter, The Texas Tribune; author, “We Were Once a Family: A Story of Love, Death, and Child Removal in America”
