Earth Girls Are Easy is a 1988 science fiction comedy film directed by famed music video director Julien Temple, and written by comedian/singer Julie Brown. Based off of a song previously released by Brown, the action follows a trio of space aliens landing upon Earth, and finding themselves under the care of a lovelorn manicurist in California. The film follows the group's efforts to blend in with the rest of humanity and eventually fix their crashed spaceship. It featured acting roles from Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Charles Rocket, Michael McKean, Julie Brown herself, and early performances from Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans, while also featuring music by legendary disco musician Nile Rodgers. Though not a major commercial success, the film has developed a devoted cult following over the years. On a new episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott welcome back all-star guest Ashley Rogers to the program for a screening of Earth Girls Are Easy. Christian Rock. A phenomenon in which the iconically American genre of music is used as a tool for evangelizing, preaching, or otherwise sharing christian religious beliefs. Though christianity had long opposed the "devil music" that was rock and roll, sometime around the late 1960s and early 1970s, former hippies who had turned to Christ discovered that they could use rock music as a means of spreading their gospel. Though many old guard christians considered it abhorrent, and conflicting to their values, christian rock gradually spread among the faithful, and even enjoyed a surge of mainstream commercial success in the 1990s via acts like Creed, Relient K, P.O.D., DC Talk, Jars of Clay, and many more. It's a phenomenon that many millennials and gen Z'ers grew up with, largely through the influence of religious parents or peers. Some embraced religion whole-heartedly through it, but for many among us...we still don't get it.With that level of ill-preparedness in mind, on this episode of Jukebox Zeroes, Lilz and Patrick welcome Ashley Rogers and Shane Smith to the pod. Both return guests had grown up with christian rock as an everpresent force in their youth, and are glad to educate Lilz and Patrick in the ways of excessively earnest guys rocking out for Jeebus. Join them for a round-table discussion of random christian rock songs and artists, to exorcise some long dormant demons of their childhood, and make fun of Doug TenNapel.Seriously, fuck that guy.#werenormalnowLocal Music Feature: The Revenants - "Why Is God A Goddamn Jerk"

Hedwig & The Angry Inch began as a 1998 off-Broadway stage show, before being adapted to film in 2001, directed by and starring John Cameron Mitchell, who also wrote and starred in the original play. The movie follows Hansel Schmidt, a gay youth in communist East Germany, who escapes with a lover by undergoing a botched sex change operation, only to be abandoned upon reaching America, and turning to rock music as an outlet. The film featured a soundtrack heavily influenced by glam-punk acts like The Stooges, The New York Dolls, and more, and tackled themes of queer identity, rock culture as applied to theater, and of the philosophical concept of the divided self. While not a hit at the time, Hedwig went on to be a cult classic, and would inspire a Broadway revival of the stage version years later. On a new episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott welcome Ashley Rogers back to the pod to dig into Hedwig & The Angry Inch. Join them for frank discussions on dualism, queer identity, and unhinged impressions of Bobcat Goldthwait....with Lilz and Scott!

Ah, nu metal. The runt subgenre of metal that swapped fast tempos and guitar solos for heavy syncopation, rapped vocals, turntables and samples, and a greater influence from Faith No More than Led Zeppelin. Few styles of music have inspired such a wide, contrasting swath of both adoration and revulsion. It's been described as the sound that nearly destroyed metal during its late-90s to mid-00s heyday, while jump-starting the careers of seasoned acts like Korn, Slipknot, Disturbed, Linkin Park, and yes...even Limp Bizkit, and conveying a message of detached anti-social behavior that reached edgy teenage boys primarily. Both Lilz and Patrick have a sordid and embarrassing history with this genre, and on this episode of Jukebox Zeroes they're joined by fellow nu metal survivor, playwright, and fellow podcaster Ashley Rogers (The Is It Transphobic Podcast) to face their past head on. In this, the Nu Metal Roundup, we've compiled a selection of tracks to riff, examine, and generally pick apart, in the hope of exorcising these JNCO-wearing demons. The only stipulation here? No A-listers are allowed. You'll find no Deftones, System Of A Down, or Staind here. Only bands that took off hugely at Ozzfest and Locobazooka, only to immediately fizzle out and be doomed to tour dive bars at the age of 47.And you get to join us!Sorry.Music Feature: PUYA - "Ride" (AKA get on the PUYA train)#ZeroScience#JukeboxZeroes#MusicPodcast#OddPodSquad#PodernFamily#NuMetal#Der

Show notes:  0:38: The Wind Up And The Pitch, A Coffee Break And Why Trix Are Not For Mike -- The show opened with a reminder about next week’s Pitch Slam 8 and New Beverage Showdown 19 competitions and praise for the nearly 200 brands combined that applied. The hosts also discussed elements of the upcoming BevNET and NOSH Virtually Live events, including “investor speed dating,” breakout sessions and more. Later, BevNET staff reporter Brad Avery discussed his recent article about how some coffee brands are pivoting during the pandemic and Mike shared some quirky stories about his childhood. 14:06: Interview: Ashley Rogers, Founder/CEO, Spudsy -- Rogers spoke with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif about growing up in an entrepreneurial household, how cocktail waitressing in Las Vegas led to the launch of her first company and how identifying white space in the nut butter category led to the  development of her second brand, Buff Bake. She also explained why she should have turned down distribution and retail placement for the products, why she has some regret about the brand’s name and the dangers of an unreliable production partner. Later, she discussed the inspiration behind Spudsy, the remarkable story about how she found and partnered with a co-packer, why she is more thoughtful about retailer relationships than she had been with Buff Bake and how outsourced staff has supported Spudsy’s rapid growth. [YouTube Video Version: https://youtu.be/T8rl-POuIPg] Due to my lack of participation in the social media cyber space this week, I wasn't able to bring you great people the current news. However, this constipation in content curation did allow me to review some of the themes we keep seeing surface. From political tensions to veiled threats, the contention we've found ourselves in has become the new norm - And that spells danger for our future. The environmentalist group known as Extinction Rebellion seems to be making waves this week, as they take part in a two-week long display of civil disobedience. This all comes after Greta Thunberg made her infamous appearance and speech at the UN Climate Summit. What we're seeing right now is the organization and weaponization of the middle class and the working class, and how it will end, is still uncertain. The future may seem bleak, but I believe that's the intention of the insanity we're seeing unfold. It would seem as though hopelessness and apathy are becoming the constant mindset as swaths of people embrace the culture of climate change, but we all know this is a lie. These things and more set the stage for this cleverly crafted transmission. #22. Ashley Rogers is an old friend of mine from my Broadreach days, when I worked out of St. Martin on liveaboard sail-and dive-training expeditions. Ashley was a SCUBA instructor and we got to know each other at Broadreach's 'Pad' during the 2009 summer. Though she was living and teaching diving aboard sailing boats - and actually sailing between isalnds and dive sites - she hated it! Originally from Guatemala, Ashley now lives in New Zealand and spoke to me via Skype about how she got into sailing after reading the classic book 'Dove' by Robin Lee Graham, and decided she wanted to give it a go. Now she's preparing her boat for the 2018 edition of the Solo Trans Tasman race, a big event held every four years that sees sailors cross the Tasman Sea from New Zealand to Queensland, Australia. The 2014 edition of the race just got underway on April 22, so folow the fleet here! Ashley will be only the 5th woman to ever attempt the feat. Follow her on her Facebook page, The Solo Challenge.
