We are rounding out season ten by thinking about and imagining around, the benefits of Energetic Stewardship. This season has had a massive focus on the Energy of CPTSD Recovery and how the Energy Work around Unburdening, Unblending, Integrating, and Embodying, comes together in conjunction with Parts Work. So, in wrapping up this season before we take a podcasting break, we wanted to bring it all back to two really key foci when thinking about Energetic Stewardship. Join in to hear more about the four different milestones of the CPTSD Recovery framework and how Energy Work translates into results that you care about, including the areas of money, time, fear, trust, and ability. Take care, and come find me on IG @cptsdmedicine, for the new weekly Live show!    Key Points From This Episode:   Connecting the dots with two key foci when thinking about Energetic Stewardship. A message from Tanner to all the listeners.  The four different milestones in the CPTSD Recovery framework. We jump into the first of the four milestones: Unblending. Unburdening; what it is and why it's so important.  Where the Energy Work becomes important in the Unburdening. Integration: stabilizing the new constellation and proportionality of energies (the new space).  Transitioning from the realm of thoughts to the realm of physicality; becoming a tangible and vivid embodiment. The two courses, 5 Circuits of Healing Power and DEVOTED focus on these four milestones.  How Energy Work translates into results you care about including money, time, fear, trust, and ability.  Why we are taking a podcasting break!    Quotes:   “My sole-purpose [and] calling. [My] purpose [and] mission, at this point in time, is to create an efficient, effective, holistic, CPTSD Recovery curriculum that you can drop into for two or so years and arrive out on the other side ready to live the life of your dreams!” — Tanner Wallace [0:02:30]   “If we want to recover from something as complex and multidimensional as CPTSD, we need frameworks.” — Tanner Wallace [0:04:15] “In my Tanner, personal opinion, CPTSD Recovery hasn't even started until you've experienced Unblending.” — Tanner Wallace [0:07:17]   “[Unburdening work] is so sacred. And this work is so profound, I know that there is something larger than the human experience at play.” — Tanner Wallace [0:14:56]   “Fear. When we are making decisions out of fear and not love, it is always something that is going to need to be unwound or undone in the future. When we are showing up in love everything just unfolds.” — Tanner Wallace [0:30:25]   “Just because I'm gifted at something doesn't mean I answer the call. Welcome back to the show and our sincere apologies for our absence last week. We've been busy with a workshop that explored how to find (and lean into) your edge, real-time CPTSD recovery, and how to accelerate the healing process. And if you are in your own process of complex PTSD healing and self-discovery, be sure to keep checking our Instagram Stories @cptsdmedicine and join our email list (link in show notes) to stay up-to-date about the upcoming Energetic Stewardship workshop. Now, our movement through life can often be restricted by what someone in our bloodline did many, many, many years, ago. Their actions cause us to behave in certain repetitive ways, often to our own detriment or those of the ones around us.  These fear-based frequencies are known as Legacy Burdens and today, we unpack our definition of Legacy Burdens and how it relates to Lineage Journeys and Ancestral Healing. Then, we explore the ancient wisdom that we all have access to, our inherent gifts, the task of unburdening from intergenerational transmissions of trauma and how Parts work fits into this process, and how having a guide is helpful but only you can do the work! It's great to be back.  And sorry about the sound quality! My recording microphone was not the one recording! It was my laptop set behind me! AND YES!!! celebrating 100 episodes!!!! Key Points From This Episode:   Welcome back to the show as we explain why we didn't have an episode last week.  How CPTSD Recovery happens in real-time, and exploring the elements that hasten this process.  What it means to find your edge, and why you should always lean into it. For many of us, the start of our CPTSD recovery journey is largely driven by fear. But what if fear didn't need to be your primary motivation? What if, instead, you found yourself inspired to live a life where you weren't just surviving but thriving? Today we continue our energy series and delve even deeper into the concept of Self Energy by unpacking The Three Principles for Amplifying Self Energy and the role it can play in your healing journey. In discussing the Three Principles of Amplifying Self Energy, we address the discomfort one can feel when trying something new, like Connecting to Source Energy, and how embracing novelty can help you move past awkwardness and begin the important work of deepening your learning. We then go on to investigate the need to understand yourself as one entity that has been fragmented — and how you can help your system realize that you are one entity under your own leadership — before examining how embracing simple structures can provide you with powerful pathways to practice. To learn more about how you can start to embody leadership by amplifying your own Self Energy, join us for this illuminating episode! Key Points From This Episode:   Taking a moment to engage in the practice of Energetic Stewardship. An overview of what we've covered in season 10 thus far. Why today's episode will be focused on diving deeper into Self Energy. Insight into the three principles for Amplifying Self Energy. The first principle; embracing novelty. Accepting that you may initially feel awkward, performative, or silly. The benefits of being exposed to different mentors and methods. Finding what resonates and is authentic to you. The second principle; learning to recognize yourself as one singular system. Why you need to understand yourself as one system that has been fragmented. Helping your system realize that you're all one entity under your leadership. How recognizing your singular system can facilitate massive unburdening. The third principle; embracing simple structures as powerful pathways. A rundown of the nine simple structures to provide you with a pathway to practice. Three different opportunities for you to dive deeper into this work.   Tweetables:   “Notice and try to get in touch with what part bumped you out of staying with me. What parts still don't feel like it's safe to be in stillness, to give yourself some time to be held, to be nourished, to be inspired, to be supported, to be motivated.” — Tanner Wallace [08:05]   “The first time I was integrating elemental medicine into my Parts work, I felt so stupid. I felt like I was pretending. I felt like I was performing. It just felt so awkward.” — Tanner Wallace [22:12]    “As I stuck with it, and I continued to try it, I then released myself from it having to look the way that I'd seen other people do it. And I started to just do it the way that truly resonated with me. And then it started to become more authentic.” — Tanner Wallace [22:28]   “It helps to be exposed to a lot of different ways of connecting with Source energy. So that you can pick and choose from different mentors, different examples, what really lands and has resonance in your experience.” — Tanner Wallace [23:12]   “If you don't embrace the novelty and get past the awkward, ‘this is ridiculous' stage, you won't come to discover what medicine is truly meant to be yours.” — Tanner Wallace [23:41]   “We're all one system that has been fragmented, and some parts may not realize that they're you fragmented off, and the sooner your system can realize that you're all one entity under your leadership, the sooner massive unburdening can happen.” — Tanner Wallace [26:11]   “This is a community. A quick recap on the True Self leads us into a discussion on understanding the value of having a pure anchor to ground it all, The Core. We then dive into the goals of protective parts work, and the difference between that and symptom management, and she shares her thoughts on unattached burdens. She elaborates on the four typical energetic signatures of Protective Parts and introduces two other kinds of parts that are distinguished by their use of punishing or despairing strategies to control. This episode is humming with insights and knowledge on this aspect of CPTSD recovery, so make sure to tune in to hear all this and more.    Key Points From This Episode: Tanner shares the bigger context behind her ‘Joyful Surprise'. More about the first workshop in the Energetic Stewardship Series. The ‘Joyful Surprise' (tune in to find out). An introduction to our topic for today's episode: Protective Parts Energy. The Four F's as seen in Pete Walker's book, From Surviving to Thriving.  The larger context of working with protective parts. The key principle of protective part works.  A recap about the True Self and what it is. Tanner talks about her shift of beginning to dislike the term True Self. Understanding the value of having a pure anchor that grounds it all: The Core.  We talk about what Protective Parts are and the goal of protective parts work.  The difference between Parts Work and symptom management.  Tanner addresses her thoughts and perspective on unattached burdens. Her major point: it's not just as simple as working with protective parts. Tanner elaborates on the four typical energetic signatures of Protective Parts. We touch on the language of the shadowy survival or protective energy of Protective Parts. She introduces two other kinds of other parts that use punishing or despairing to control. Tapping into the ultimate survival code: lean in to connect when in distress.  How a trauma ecosystem undermines positive youth development.  She circles back to talk about the punishing or despairing parts.  How legacy burdens differ from punishing or despairing parts. We wrap up with the energies of Protective Parts.    Tweetables: “I don't think, for CPTSD, self-energy alone is sufficient. At some point when you get to some of the most gaslit, injured, lineage-related, collective-trauma-related parts, energies, or entities inside of us, self-energy alone — is not adequate in its potency to help soften some of those parts.” — Tanner Wallace [0:04:42] Longer quote   “I think, and this is what is so powerful about IFS, is that there is a larger context with working with protective parts, that is really important to keep in mind, or else we can get lost in protective part work and lose sight of the key anchoring principle — the True Self.” — Tanner Wallace [0:07:59] Longer quote   “Protective parts are native, fragmented, aspects of self that have broken off from the central channel, or inner world, and — are now running their own energy.” — Tanner Wallace [0:11:51]   “The goal of parts work is to unburden protective parts of whatever they are carrying around — that make them want to stay separate from the true self, core, [or] central channel.” — Tanner Wallace [0:12:33]   “This is my major point: it's not just as simple as working with protective parts. Even though you can receive relief almost immediately working with protective parts, there is a larger, deeper, longer-term process of the unburdening sequence.” — Tanner Wallace [0:16:10]   “Protective parts are connected to our human experience, they are fragmented aspects of our self that separated and came online to run different survival energies when moments happened in our lives, in childhood or adolescence, when it was very clear there was no safe adult to protect us, love us, or nurture us.” — Tanner Wallace [0:23:34] Longer quote   “Lean in to connect when in distress; that's the ultimate survival code.” — Tanner Wallace [0:24:27]   “The unburdening sequence is about keeping pace with and matching the protective part energy with equal measures of self-energy, so that your seat of power, your leadership, never degrades or diminishes to the point where protective parts take over.” — Tanner Wallace [0:31:04]   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Energetic Stewardship Series Workshop Join the 5 Circuits Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving  CPTSD Medicine on YouTube CPTSD Medicine on Instagram Tanner Wallace on Facebook HELD By Tanner Email List CPTSD Medicine Podcast

With the foundation of the Internal Family Systems grounding what we do, there are many vital questions that we can address through the process of embodiment, so if you have not yet listened to the two most recent episodes in which some of these ideas were introduced fully, make sure to do that too. In today's show, we will get into cultivating our own medicine, and the six energies that we all possess as humans with CPTSD. These are namely Protective Part energy, Wounded Younger Part energy, Legacy Burdens or inherited family trauma, Darker Collective energy, Self Energy, and Source Energy. By becoming fully intimate with these concepts we can start to unburden, integrate, and embody the CPTSD healing! CPTSD recovery leads to liberation, finding wholeness, and honoring your birthright. This episode explores energy as the primary focus of CPTSD recovery by outlining six different energy types. Every resource you consult is influenced by the person offering it, and an evolving perspective involves considering different perspectives. While certain energy types affect all people, humans with CPTSD are more susceptible to certain collective energies. This discussion explores what this means for those individuals, and offers clarity on the misunderstood nature of dark energy. Tune in for an incredibly informative look at the complex energy structure underpinning CPTSD recovery today.    Key Points From This Episode: A reintroduction to your host, Dr. Tanner Wallace. Her shifting perspective on placing energy as the major focus of CPTSD recovery.  Why she would not have been ready to consider this framework a few years ago. How Season 10 returns to Tanner's academic roots. The six energies of CPTSD.   Why Self Energy is such a key factor of CPTSD.  What determines your focus in any particular field and why it is important to consult different sources. The two parts to energy-focused CPTSD recovery. Survival coding from our human experience and when it comes online. Legacy burden energy inherited by humans with CPTSD. Collective trauma affecting all humans on planet Earth. Why humans with CPTSD are more susceptible to dark energy. Clarity on the incredibly misunderstood nature of dark energy. Abandonment flooding or ‘I hurt' energy. The next episode: Power Core activation. Defining Self Energy.  Connecting to Source Energy.  What all of this leads to: liberation through finding wholeness and honoring your birthright.    Tweetables: “My understanding of CPTSD is that it's a constellation of energies that influence soul and spirit.” — Tanner Wallace [03:28] “If you're a human with CPTSD, one of the ways to describe what has happened to you, is you did not develop adequate access self-energy. You didn't understand how to return to it when things got chaotic or destabilized in your world.” — Tanner Wallace [07:27] “Dark energy is so incredibly misunderstood. Dark energy is light energy that has been co-opted and actually can be alchemized into the most potent form of source energy, love, and light.” — Tanner Wallace [17:49]   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: CPTSD Medicine on Instagram CPTSD Medicine on YouTube Tanner Wallace on Facebook HELD By Tanner Email List CPTSD Medicine Podcast

Tuning in, you'll hear about my love of learning and how life and trauma interrupted my sense of curiosity and drove me to pursue recognition in the scientific community. You'll hear about the chaos, stress, and dysregulation I lived with, how despite years of therapy, no one ever mentioned the word "trauma" to me, and how the book Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving changed my life. I explain my introduction to Internal Family Systems, the research I did to structure my recovery, and how I developed The Five Circuits of Healing Power around my first phase of transformation. I also discuss Phase 2 of complex trauma recovery, the mentorship I sought, and how this relates to my work. How this led me to become a professor in health and human development. How my chaotic personal life paralleled my career.  How in all my years of therapy, no one ever mentioned the word “trauma”. Why chaos, stress, and dysregulation feel normal if you've grown up in a trauma ecosystem. How the closest I got to “trauma” was “Borderline Personality Disorder”. My introduction to mindfulness and alternative ways to be in the world. The moment when my second marriage was falling apart and the absurd thing I did to fix it.  How the book Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving led me to realize that my problem was complex trauma.  The research I did to structure my own recovery.  My introduction to internal family systems and how this became the foundation of my work. How I developed The Five Circuits of Healing Power around my first transformation phase. Phase two of complex trauma recovery and the mentorship I sought out. Two other containers in my coaching business: The CPTSD Sanctuary and Healing Power Full Force. What you can expect from Season 9.  Tweetables:   “Life and my trauma interrupted a lot of that curiosity, a lot of those open-ended expansive pursuits of knowledge, and were replaced by a more performative drive to accomplish, achieve, procure validity and status in the scientific community.” — Tanner Wallace [02:55]   “When you've grown up in a constant state of survival physiology activation in a trauma ecosystem, chaos, stress, [and] dysregulation all feel so normative.” — Tanner Wallace [05:17]   “Divine archetypal resonance, the elemental medicine, the activation sequence of the gene keys, the understanding of human design, lineage journeying, these realms across timelines and time-based experiences moving into the spiritual realm; this has been a huge focus of my journey.” — Tanner Wallace [25:35]   “Season 9 is a chance for me to open up a window, a portal, and pull the curtain open and show you the energy, the minds, the bodies, the voices, the inspirations, the knowings, the wisdom, the designs, the gene keys behind the humans who have supported my own journey.” — Tanner Wallace [30:33]   “Having to heal yourself from the inside out and alchemize the energy of trauma, gives you really pristine, pure, potent ways of showing up in your life.” — Tanner Wallace [33:46]   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:   Parenting from the Inside Out   Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving  The Body Keeps the Score IFS & CPTSD with Justin Martin Tanner Wallace on Instagram CPTSD Medicine on Instagram Tanner Wallace on Facebook HELD By Tanner Email List CPTSD Medicine Podcast

The System of Meaning CPTSD Provides Us (Part 2)

Welcome back to another installment of our ongoing exploration of the big symptom categories of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). In this special episode, which was recorded live on Instagram, we explore the fifth symptom category of CPTSD: the loss of a system of meaning. In part one of this discussion (which I encourage you to go back and listen to), I explain why I believe this is one of the most inaccurate ways to describe a CPTSD symptom. In fact, we develop a complex and well-defined meaning-making system in response to a threat to our attachment context. Today, we look at that system of meaning, what you can do to meet yourself within it, and ultimately, how you can find your way out of it. We also delve into how you can correct the mistakes your Protective Parts made when trying to find meaning in trauma in a restorative way that is not re-traumatizing. Finally, I walk you through a grounding practice of self-energy, source energy, and affirmation. As a survivor listening to this, as a human with CPTSD, I want to help you understand what you've been tasked with as you embark on your recovery journey. So, for deeper insight into the joys of unburdening yourself of Protective Part shadow energy, finding your “inner light,” and reclaiming your personal power, be sure to join me today!   Key Points From This Episode:   Why the “loss of a system of meaning” is an inaccurate symptom category of CPTSD. Insight into the important but misguided function of our protective parts. The meaning-making system we develop when faced with a threat to our attachment context. How to meet yourself within that system (and find your way out using your “inner light.”) The task of unburdening yourself of all non-native energy and amplifying your self-energy. Why modifying your thinking and belief systems doesn't work for CPTSD recovery. Important strategies for holding your own energy and releasing frequencies of shame. Ways to tap into frequencies of trust and conviction. Learning to identify the different energetic signatures of our protective parts. A reminder that you are not broken or flawed: you are burdened by energy. The importance cycle of witnessing and validating from a space of self-energy. When you can begin to work on compassionate, loving thought correction. How to get a free self-energy study guide from 5 Circuits of Healing Power. Closing with a grounding practice of self-energy and source energy.   Tweetables: “The idea that the Protective Parts of us don't have a meaning system is wildly inaccurate. In fact, they have developed a very well-articulated, well-versed meaning system around [the idea that] 'something is wrong with the human I inhabit.'” — Tanner Wallace [0:03:02]   “The one task you have in recovery from complex trauma is to unburden your system of all non-native energy such that you can amplify your self-energy, which allows you to be in a place of personal power and self-leadership to make all the decisions in your life.” — Tanner Wallace [0:12:02]   “We're not flawed. We're not broken. We're running about 18 different energies [depending on what] time of day it is and whoever is in our relational field. Cleaning this up is a matter of amplifying self-energy.” — Tanner Wallace [0:28:56]   “Love is what transmutes trauma. Firstly, I'd like to start by saying that I am seeing a collective healing happening all around me. I am proud of all of you for giving yourselves the permission to level up, expand, and fully express yourselves. The loss of a system of meaning is the 5th symptom category of CPTSD and, in my opinion, also the most inaccurate. When we are dealing with complex trauma, we don't lose our systems of meaning; we merely lose access to them. It then becomes about tapping into our self-energy to unburden ourselves to be able to enjoy the limitless possibilities that come with self-belief. Today, I will be explaining why losing a system of meaning is hard to define, the mistakes our protective parts make when trying to find meaning in trauma, the joys of unburdening ourselves and gaining access to meaning through self-energy, and why you may be afraid of letting go of despair. If you would like to learn more about unburdening your inner world, amplifying your self-energy, and becoming your own most powerful recovery coach, be sure to check out my 5 Circuits of Healing Power self-paced curriculum. So much love from me to you.❤️   Key Points From This Episode: Leveling up, expansion, and giving yourself permission for self-expression.  The collective healing that I see happening all around me.  Losing a system of meaning, having no faith, and feelings of hopelessness.  The difficulty in defining a loss of a system of meaning. Mistakes that the Protective Parts of us make when trying to find meaning in trauma.  How we don't lose systems of meaning in our trauma, we merely lose access to them.  Having the self-energy to be able to access systems of meaning.  What we regain access to once we unburden ourselves.   The fear of letting go of despair.  Why ‘losing a system of meaning' is the most inaccurate symptom category of CPTSD.  The wonderful possibilities of tapping into Self Energy. Differences between how we work and other common thought-correction modalities.  The trials of trust that our Protective Parts put us through.  Taking a look at what we'll be covering in the next and final episode of season 8. The 5 Circuits of Healing Power self-paced curriculum.    Tweetables: “I am clearer than I've ever been before that we truly are leading a survivor-led trauma recovery revolution.” — Tanner Wallace [5:39]   “Our soul is connected to our earthly, human experience. Our spirit is connected to the beyond, boundless oneness we have with the universe.” — Tanner Wallace [16:34]   “The fear is: If we have a little bit of hope, if we try this healing out, if we see what's on the other side of letting go of the despair, letting go of this belief [that] nothing will ever get better  — if we let go of that, what happens if we can't heal?” — Tanner Wallace [18:11]   “Once trust is there in self, once confidence is there in self, [then] there is openness to receiving alternative meaning-making.” — Tanner Wallace [22:53]   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: 5 Circuits of Healing Power CPTSD Medicine on Instagram Tanner Wallace on Facebook HELD By Tanner Email List CPTSD Medicine Podcast

Human beings are social creatures. We rely on one another not just for survival but for meaning, connection, and the nourishing of our spirit. When our ability to form and maintain healthy relationships is compromised at a young age, it can have a ripple effect, creating protective mechanisms (also known as Protective Parts) that alter our behavior and interactions with others. While these may help us survive, they can also cause enduring difficulties in our future relationships. Bearing this in mind, we use today's conversation to delve into a major category of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD): difficulties with relationships. Join us as we unpack the five wounding patterns that can form in childhood and adolescence and how each one manifests in our adult lives, all while taking a compassionate look at the unique difficulties they can create within relationships. The process of co-creation is not always taught by our early caregivers, but it is something that can be learned from another source. During today's episode, we dive into the topic of healing through co-creation with the universe. While healed humans can offer us co-creation with many of our Parts, Tanner shows that there is a level that requires a source more powerful than Self Energy or the support of others. Unpacking how a negative self-view forms part of the system of a human with CPTSD, this episode explores what limits and what builds the foundation we need to find within to deepen our healing. Co-creation with the universe requires time and commitment, and it cannot take place without Self Leadership and Self Energy guiding the process. Tune in today as we go deep while equipping you with essential tools to heal from CPTSD. Thanks for listening! Key Points From This Episode: An invitation to find stillness before listening to a blessing of energetic containment.  Living in ‘I am' energy.  The role of a parent or caregiver in the process of co-creation. Learning the process of co-creation from another source. The role of co-creation with the universe in complex trauma recovery. Tanner's background and education leading up to her expertise today. How the podcast acts as a healing journey for Tanner's own experience. Tanner reflects on the podcast and how it ties into her life's journey. Major-symptom categories of CPTSD.  How a negative self-view is interwoven into the system of a human with CPTSD. Turning outside of the self in response to a negative self-view. How searching for validation keeps us from finding the foundation we need within. Why the Internal Family Systems Parts Model doesn't go the distance with the darkest Parts. What is necessary in those moments: a source of something more powerful than self-energy. Tanner's own experience of addressing the layer of confusion, overwhelm, and darkness within. How she came to parts work in a moment of desperation. Opening her heart to source energy and spiritual work.  Her movement towards finding a co-creator larger than herself. How healed humans can offer us a co-creation process with many of our parts.  Where the co-creation with the universe becomes necessary. The commitment required for the journey of co-creation with the universe. The next episode: Detachment from the Trauma.  Advice for those who are on a spiritual journey but never connected to the healing they're seeking. The importance of access to self-energy and Internal Family Systems. Why there can be no sidestepping self-leadership in the healing of CPTSD.   Tweetables:   “Those that are healed enough grant opportunities for refinement, clarification, revision, improvement, modification, adaptation, opening, beginning, clearing, and reimagining.” — Tanner Wallace [01:26]   “We move through life in an unfolding act of co-creation.” — Tanner Wallace [01:45]   “Living in that ‘I am' energy is the healing, is the journey, is the process.” — Tanner Wallace [02:49]   “Learning how to do co-creation with the universe as an anchor is such a foundational part of how I view complex trauma recovery.” — Tanner Wallace [06:57]   “Through my own experience, Self Energy couldn't convince or collaborate or fully unburden my most severely gaslit parts.” — Tanner Wallace [29:17]   “There is no sidestepping Self Leadership in the healing of CPTSD.” — Tanner Wallace [36:40]   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:   Episode 82 Episode 80 Verywell Mind Tanner Wallace on Instagram CPTSD Medicine on Instagram Tanner Wallace on Facebook Held By Tanner Email List Held By Tanner Podcast

    Understanding Your Negative Self-View

As we continue our exploration of some of the symptoms of CPTSD in Season 8 and unpack them survivor-to-survivor, today we dialogue with the second symptom category which is a negative self-view. We break down what a negative self-view is, why this term feels so inadequate, and why this condition persists even though we can intellectually make sense of it as adults. Tuning in you'll hear about the parental neglect or rejection present in those of us with CPTSD, how younger Parts of ourselves become frozen-in-time, and how the Protective Parts of ourselves come online and develop belief systems forged in the context of parental neglect and rejection to result in a negative self-view.  We also talk about death-like feelings of helplessness and hopelessness that we may feel and the physiological state change and reach behavior that results. By really unpacking the CPTSD symptom of a negative self-view, we give ourselves language and conceptualization to understand it better, and develop a sense of how to deal with it, so join us today.   Key Points From This Episode:   The focus for the next two episodes: negative self-view. A definition of ‘negative self-view' and why this term feels so inadequate. How this negative self-view persists even though we can intellectually make sense of it as adults.  How Internal Family Symptoms (IFS) provide a framework for why this negative self-view is so pervasive and entrenched.  Insight into the dark energy of trauma that we inherit from our ancestors and how it activates our negative self-view.  The parental neglect or rejection present in those with CPTSD.  The Wounded Younger Parts of ourselves that become frozen-in-time and what they look like.  The Protective Parts of ourselves that come online and develop a belief system forged in the context of parental neglect and rejection that results in a negative self-view.  Why it's not the inner children or Wounded Younger Parts that have the negative self-view but the Protective Parts.  How this results in death-like feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.  How the Protective Parts make use of adaptive survival instincts which isolate the system even more. The physiological state change and Reach behavior that results in a negative self-view cycle. The disruption that happens that enables you to see outside of the reality you find yourself in. What you can expect from the next episode.    Tweetables:   “Why does this negative view of myself persist when intellectually, I can absolutely make sense of it?” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [05:27]   “In the context of parental neglect and/or parental rejection, there are these wounded younger parts of us that almost get frozen-in-time and fragmented off.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [08:29]   “These wounded younger parts of us have these feelings that until they're alchemized, or until they're released or unburdened, there is this level of ‘I hurt' energy in our system.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [10:59]   “It makes sense to me that if a protective part comes online, they're seeing the parents, they're seeing the wounded younger parts, that they develop a belief system based on observation which is forged in the context of parental neglect and rejection.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [14:13]   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:   Verywell Mind  The Five Circuits of Healing Power Tanner Wallace on Instagram CPTSD Medicine on Instagram Tanner Wallace on Facebook Held By Tanner Email List Held By Tanner Podcast

Separating Our Emotions from Fear and Survival Instincts through Co-Regulation

One of the signature symptoms of complex trauma is difficulties in controlling one's emotions. In light of this, today we discuss co-regulation. Tuning in, you'll hear what co-regulation is and why it's such an important part of being human. Complex trauma affects a child's ability to co-regulate and, as a cycle-breaking parent, helping your children co-regulate can be an important part of your own healing. However, finding ongoing co-regulatory support for yourself as an adult can be challenging, and it's important that you can do this for yourself. Today, we talk about how to identify a protective instinct and some of the various defensive strategies we may resort to when trying to control our emotions, before we break down some practical examples of how to deal with ‘I must' energy, ‘I won't' energy, ‘I can't' energy, and ‘I will destroy' energy. We have big aspirations for your time invested in listening to this podcast, so join us today as we take a deep dive into co-regulation, put a deepening to it, and gain an understanding of it from the lived experience of a human with complex trauma.    Key Points From This Episode:   An explanation of what co-regulation is. Why co-regulation is an important part of being human. How complex trauma affects a child's ability to co-regulate. Why helping your children co-regulate is so important for your own healing as a cycle-breaking parent.  The problem of finding ongoing co-regulatory support as an adult and why you need to do this for yourself. How to identify a protective instinct and respond to it.  Pete Walker's four ‘F' responses and various defensive strategies we may resort to.  How co-regulation helps us to separate emotions from fear and survival instincts. How you can help yourself, your child, or your partner to co-regulate.   How a large portion of the healing journey is arriving at your power core where you recognize ‘this is me'. Practical examples of how to deal with ‘I must' energy, ‘I won't' energy, ‘I can't' energy, and ‘I will destroy' energy.    Tweetables:   “Co-regulation is a really important aspect of being human.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [03:19]   “We run out of options when we become an adult for really deep ongoing consistent co-regulatory support.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [09:47]   “As an adult, you have difficulty controlling your emotions because you likely have 7 to 10 protective parts of you that are responding to any emotions in your relational field, both inside and out, with pretty well-developed survival instincts.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [11:24]   “It's not the emotions that are difficult to control, it's the fucking Protective Part energy that thinks the emotions of ours or somebody else are literally going to kill us. And that's what's difficult to hold.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [14:01]   “Ultimately on a healing journey, we're separating our emotions from fear, from survival instinct.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [15:38]   “That's a large portion of the [healing] journey is just to arrive in your Power Core where you recognize ‘This Is Me'.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [20:20]   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:   Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving: A Guide and Map for Recovering from Childhood Trauma Tanner Wallace on Instagram CPTSD Medicine on Instagram Tanner Wallace on Facebook Held By Tanner Email List Held By Tanner Podcast

During Season 8, we're exploring all the ways that CPTSD symptoms show up in our lived experiences, and ways of identifying the root cause of each symptom to offer your system release and start to reprogram its responses. In today's episode, we begin to dive deeper into what it means to have emotional control, why this is usually the entry point for addressing CPTSD, and how a human with CPTSD's emotional experience is different from the unaffected brain. A simple Google search won't lead you to the answers you need to truly understand and begin to heal from CPTSD, and there are aspects of the experience that are unlikely to be addressed through mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy alone. Join us as we begin to unpack the multifaceted implications of CPTSD on the mind and how the condition can be worked with to make room for compassionate attention and healing. Thanks for listening! Key Points From This Episode:   What this podcast explores during its eighth season: the lived experience of CPTSD symptoms. Your host, Tanner, and her qualifications, background, and pursuits.  The first symptom to be discussed over two episodes: emotional control. How lack of emotional control is defined and why we can all relate to it.  Why this is usually the entry point for addressing CPTSD. Why a person with CPTSD's emotional experience differs drastically from someone without it. Why a simple Google search won't lead you to the resources you need for emotional regulation. The influence of intergenerational family trauma.  What healing CPTSD is truly about. What a supportive structure should feel like: meeting yourself as a highly charged emotional being and doing the work from the inside out of how to alchemize these emotions.  Three key takeaways for contemplation. Why we aren't traditionally given appropriate protection from our thoughts.  Building trust with your inner system. How we perpetuate suffering in our own lives by recreating patterns.  Why self-leadership is so critical to healing.  What it means to go beyond performing healing. Light and love in the frequency of death and destruction. A reminder from Tanner that you can do it!   Tweetables:   “At some point, most of us have some sort of life event related to our inability to control our emotions that just makes it crystal clear that this has become unmanageable, this is not sustainable, and something needs to change.” —Tanner Wallace [04:12]   “Unlike the emotions of a non-traumatized human, or human without CPTSD, humans with CPTSD have these emotions that are interwoven into very primitive life or death fear frequencies.” — Tanner Wallace [05:49]   “These emotions are not just based on our human experience. they are also based on what we inherited from our family trauma intergenerationally.” — Tanner Wallace [09:27]   “Healing CPTSD, recovering from CPTSD is about leaning into the very charged emotions. Not separating or distancing yourself from them, but meeting yourself and all your parts in those moments very directly.” — Tanner Wallace [11:52]   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:   Episode 79 Verywell Mind Tanner Wallace on Instagram CPTSD Medicine on Instagram Tanner Wallace on Facebook Held By Tanner Email List Held By Tanner Podcast

If you asked me: what is the one thing that will aid me the most in my complex trauma recovery journey? I would say that you have to learn how to hold your own energy. Today, I break down what this means, what I've learned about it, and how you can create an internal sense of safety and facilitate your healing from the inside out. In this episode, I use the transformative model of Internal Family Systems (IFS) as a core foundational perspective without limiting myself to it, expanding on what it has to say about parts to create a more comprehensive and holistic view of the ways that we experience our inner worlds. This lends us a sense of self-authority and allows us to embody a deeper level of empowerment. Tuning in, you'll learn how energy differs from emotion, how the presence of fear keeps you stuck in survival mode, and how to hold the fear-based energy of trauma and show up fully for the parts of yourself that are most wounded. I hope you'll join me!   Key Points From This Episode:   How emotions motivate certain responses, actions, and thought processing patterns. Expanding on IFS to build a more holistic view of how we experience our inner worlds. The big six emotions and how emotions are different from energy. Why it's important to acknowledge the absence or presence of fear. Insight into the various nuances of fear-based energy and the inheritance of hurt. How to hold that energy without numbing it or distancing yourself from it. How this allows you to show up for the parts of yourself that are most wounded.   Tweetables:   “Not only can we recover from complex trauma, but in doing so, we unlock really powerful medicinal codes about collective healing.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [0:02:02]   “There are a lot of different ways to give form to thoughts, energies, emotions, points of view, urges, actions, responses, reactions in our inner world.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [0:07:00]   “Emotions are hugely important sources of information as humans operating in the world. It's when we add the zing of fear to an emotion that we start to move into unhelpful, unproductive, very challenging things to hold.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [0:14:26]   “I am a healer. I am a leader. I am a conductor. I am a facilitator. You'll also realize how much you have learned to heal from complex trauma, why this may be the next evolution of humanity, and why tapping into the frequency of compassion is such a victory. Celebration is a tough frequency for people with CPTSD but it helps us to tap more into the frequencies that we desire most, moving us away from fear and closer to love. So join me in celebration today!   Key Points From This Episode:   The first thing you should celebrate more in your CPTSD recovery: that you put down things in order to heal. Why Tanner believes that the healing of trauma is going to be the next evolution of humanity. Tapping into the frequency of compassion as a thing to celebrate and why this is so difficult. Why celebration is a tough frequency for people with CPTSD.   Tweetables:   “So many of us have had to do so many hard things along the way that we don't often step back and look at how much we have actually laid down in the name of recovery.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [00:53]   “All of this knowledge that you've gained about the ‘how' of recovery from complex trauma is the ultimate guidebook to human evolution.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [03:31]   “Celebration can be a practice that starts to tap more into the frequencies that we desire most, moving us from not so fear-based into more of a love-base.” — Dr. Tanner Wallace [07:52]   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:   Tanner Wallace on Instagram CPTSD Medicine on Instagram Tanner Wallace on Facebook Held By Tanner Email List Held By Tanner Podcast

Hello love. ❤️ Welcome back to another episode of HELD by Tanner. Today I share an emotional IFS experience around broken personal boundaries and dealing with critical inner voices, intense negativity, ricocheting workarounds, and the deepest betrayals. Healing from complex trauma can sometimes lead us to a point where we either breakdown or breakthrough. In this episode, I want to share three things I've learned on my journey with the hope that they can help you embody yourself as a healer. Let's dive in and continue our work to find our true personal power. Please note that this episode carries a trigger warning with talk of suicide and suicidal thoughts.  Key Points From This Episode: A personal, emotional, and vulnerable story about an interaction between her and ex-husband involving her mom and her biological children.  Trigger warning: For those affected by suicide and suicidal thoughts be advised the topic begins from 03:40 onwards.  How Tanner navigated through an experience she could not control.  The only viable path forward for her: finding her center.  Establishing her personal power.  What IFS is and how it's often misunderstood by those wanting to use it for CPTSD recovery Three things Tanner has learned in her own personal journey. Key open-ended curious questions to ask your Parts. What it means if a Part is not present. Tanner talks about the true energy of Parts Work. A recap of Parts Work.   Tweetables:   “The only viable path forward for me, [after my suicidal experience] was to learn how to find my center. To meet myself in this and rise. To meet myself in this and find that personal power” — Tanner Wallace [0:06:00]   “When you work with a practitioner, it's a facilitated session to help you have a breakthrough with your system in ways — when you have a facilitated experience it's more likely that it can happen with some of the more difficult things.” — Tanner Wallace [0:12:27]   “The energy of parts work, true parts work for complex trauma recovery, is not a checklist. It's not something you do, it's not something you schedule, it is literally an embodiment of the experience of getting to know yourself.” — Tanner Wallace [0:14:37]   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Tanner Wallace on Instagram CPTSD Medicine on Instagram Tanner Wallace on Facebook HELD By Tanner Email List HELD By Tanner Podcast   Episode 077
